Official Release from the band's Facebook:

"There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made its way down the street, with his family.
We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words.
We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD.
Have a drink or few.
Share stories.
Celebrate the LIFE this lovely, wonderful man celebrated so vibrantly himself.
HE WOULD WANT EXACTLY THAT.
Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister
1945 -2015
Born to lose, lived to win."

Motorhead are therefore not going to continue. According to the drummer: "Lemmy Was Motorhead"

It's always sad when a legend of music dies, and I did have a feeling the band would not continue out of respect. I mean, it's not an uncommon sight we have bands splitting due to the death of a notable member. It was surprising the cancer that took him was only discovered not very long ago (around last weekend to be exact).

May the great Lemmy rest in peace. His name will still live on in a certain rainbow-haired Koopaling.
Gone forever for personal reasons.

man, this sucks. it is a wonder he even got to 70 though. 20 Lemmy years are like 80 of any normal human's. so he was like. 392. (this is a random number. don't hold me accountable for this math.) anyway, yeah, rest in peace. Motorhead and Hawkwind both rule, so I'll be spinning their records today (and yesterday).

It's always a saddening feeling to know that the world of music has lost a great talent.

I think that Lemmy's memory will be better cherished in General Entertainment where I'm sure there are thousands of fans waiting to discuss his contributions to the world of music though, so I'm going to move this over to there.

With how much the guy drank (he put sailors to shame) I'm actually quite amazed he lasted as long as he did. I think his liver was shot to hell thirty years ago. He was an alcohol consumer to aspire to. I think part of his legendary gruff voice could be attributed to the amount of Jack Daniels he consumed on a daily basis.

Oh, and he was pretty good at bass, too.
