thanx.. these definitely help, but i have another newbie question. just which moves are affected by sp.att and sp.def and which are normal attack and normal defense? i mean, what is main difference between attack and defense stats as oppose to special attack and special defense? i mean judging from this for example:

[email protected]
EVs:252 Attack, 129 Speed, 129 HP
Nature:Jolly/Adamant
Earthquake
Sludge Bomb
Sleep Powder
Leech Seed

adamant adds x0.1 to attack, and the EV is mostly on boosting the attack stat.. so i'm assuming that earthquake and sludge bomb are moves that rely on attack rather than special attack. but just how do i know which moves are benefitted by which stat?

Physical (run off attack and are defended using defense) types:
Normal, Flying, Fighting, Rock, Ghost, Steel, Ground, Bug, Poison.

Special (run of SpAtk and are defended usnig SpDef) types:
Fire,Water, Electric, Ice, Grass, Dark, Psychic, Dragon.

ah, thanks, that helps a lot. it's just a shame then because venasaur has a rather high special attack, and they're going to waste with moves like earthquake and sludge bomb.

i guess this is more what i'm looking for, taking advantage of the high special attack. which nature would work best here? leftines and high sp.def and hp? isn't that sorta like the tanker blatoise i had in mind?
[email protected]
EVs: sp.def and hp
-hpfire/hpice (crazy starwolf's set)
-sleep powder
-leech seed
-razor leaf

perhaps i should go with this(if this is legal)
[email protected][-att, +sp.att]
EVS: sp.att, sp.def, hp
-hp grass
-hp fire/hp ice
-leech seed
-sleep powder

yeah, that's what i thought.. how's this then? i think i'll probably go with this.. with gigadrain, leechseed, and lefties, and high sp.def this pokemon should last a while.. gigadrain over razor leaf because it's more powerful(60 vs. 55) and restores hp a bit, and hp ice as insurance. looks good?

EVS: sp.att, sp.def, hp
-gigadrain

-leech seed

i see, so you're suggesting hp fire over hp ice to counter skarmory? works for me, i'll do that. makes sense... but now i'm worried if i run into a fire type. fire types are underused, are they not? i can only hope...

perhaps it's better to be weak to a single pokemon as skarmory than to be weak to the entire fire type? i'm starting to see why people would rather put sludge bomb and earthquake on venasaur though.

razor leaf is sorta anti tank with its high ch ratio
giga drain has only 5 pp,wont make sense for a semistalling poke like venusaur.
hp fire/ice is ur choice

well, i was reading through the move list on pokemon forever and i noticed a move called 'spore'. how does it work, does it work just like sleep powder? i was very impressed with the 100% accuracy.. but from the description it seems like even if it hits, it may not work, in which case it's not better than sleep powder is it? anyway, somehow i doubt venasaur can learn it, or am i wrong?

also i can't believe i didn't think of it(and no one pointed it out either). it is an upgrade over razor leaf and giga drain and that is magical leaf. it has more pp and has the attack power of giga drain. it doesn't restore hp but the added pp will serve the minitank venasaur better than gigadrain, and not to mention 100% accuracy as insurance. leaf blade is another alternative, no, if it's obtainable on a venasaur.

so there's
Venusaur @lefties [-att, +sp.att]
EV: sp.att, sp.def, hp
-hp ice/hp fire
-sleep powder
-leech seed
-magical leaf/leaf blade

not bad? perhaps frenzy plant to show off the noob that i am. i'd have to rest a turn, but who cares, i got sleep powder?

i do notice that sludge bomb and earthquake have their useful-ness.. but.. shouldn't the purpose of grass types be to sweep water types silly? would earthquake allow venasaur to sweep water types just as easily?

venusaur isn't going to be doing any sweeping

and spore hits all time (99.96%) and only doesn't put stuff that has insomnia or a sleep/status cure berry on it
