Cassette Tapes and Video Cassettes are the most popular thing in 80s, it works for recording musics and video for people to watch and the length of the recording is from 60 minutes to 120 minutes ( estimated time ). That time digital isn't there yet, so you can't actually skip the song unless you fast forward , or skip the video section.

Data cassette also available back then, but the size of the data is very small and you need to spin the entire tape just to read the data. There are some uses for these tapes such as Famicom data recorder.

Be cause of the high cost of video tapes , rental videos shop are available for renting movies and dramas so everyone can afford to watch one.

I remember long ago even though my parents have CDs they would record some songs on cassette tapes so my mom can listen to just her favorite songs, haha. That was before we owned a computer, so we didn't burn songs in CDs until later. Those cassette tapes I think we still have them somewhere in our house.

With rental stores, there are still a few in my city, but those too only rent out DVDs.
