Yeah, Chrono Trigger's probably the most popular choice, up there with Final Fantasy VI and, slightly less, Earthbound.

Others, Terranigma and Secret of Mana are some of the more solid Action RPGs in a console filled with them. Love 'em both- Terranigma is still one of the more well-rounded ARPGs you'll find. Though I haven't gotten far enough to affirm this, it's story is interesting as hell and it's certainly an overlooked gem. Same with its predecessors.

If you end up liking Mana, Final Fantasy Adventure on the Game Boy might be your speed. Also, Dragon Quest Monsters, which might be your speed if you like Dragon Quest or Pokemon.

Throwing in some other mentions that I won't explain but are certainly worth looking up: Shin Megami Tensei, Final Fantasy V, Bahamut Lagoon, Fire Emblem: Geneaology of the Holy War, Super Mario RPG. If you're interested in more, Hardcoore Gaming 101 has some pretty in-depth look at a lot of classic series. It has some pretty fun reads.

Also, the GBA has a nice selection of Action RPGs to boot. So if you are up to it, try out some Baldur's Gate on the GBA which would the the first thing I'd mention. It actually plays really well, though obviously its not as intricate or as highly detailed as that of the PC Baldur's Gate games but for what you may expect on a handheld, its quite there. Hackin and Slashin at its finest.

Whoah, whoah, WHOAH. Nobody mentioned Golden Sun yet? Easily two of the finest - if not THE finest - Gameboy Advance RPGs to come out that still hold up fantastically well today. The Djinni system of summoning is brilliantly unique and adds a great level of strategy to the game (do you save them and retain stats, or use them for their effects and summons?) and the Psynergy puzzles are brilliantly designed. Couple that with an engaging story, a likeable cast, an adorable sprite style and a soundtrack by Motoi Sakuraba and you're onto a winning. The Lost Age is only bigger and better, too.

Tales of Phantasia is worth playing if you can get your hands on it, too. Not the best Tales game, but a far cry from the worst, and for a Gameboy Advance game it's pretty incredible considering it has a real-time battle system.

The SNES is a goldmine for RPGs. Earthbound, Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, E.V.O.: The Search For Eden, Secret of Mana, Terranigma, Ys III, the list goes on. And if you're up for something fan translated, Ys IV and Ys V, Seiken Densest 3, and any of the Dragon Quest games are excellent choices.

On the topic of fan translations (and GBA games, not SNES games), I'm surprised nobody has brought up Mother 3 yet. As hyped to death as this game tends to be on the internet, I'd still say its an absolute must play. While I'm not sure if it can live up to the absolutely massive amounts of hype, I would go as far to say its one of the best games for the GBA.
