Anyone played this game? I really like it. It doesn't take too long to learn or to play and there's enough competition to be exciting but not too much that anyone feels like they're being attacked. Really great game for anyone, I think. The whole premise is that you build a random map of landscapes each game and through dice rolls collect building materials to build your towns and roads and slow settle the landscape. Pretty simple, but a lot of fun.

Catan is my jam.

More of a fan of regular Catan. Seafarers is fine, since it's pretty much vanilla Catan except now you can traverse the sea. Cities and Knights is not to my liking at all. Honestly, it feels like its entirely different game than an expansion (plus, my scrub tactics of spamming development cards was severely diminished because of progress cards, boooo). I haven't played enough of Explorers and Pirates to have a proper opinion of it, but my first game with it was much more enjoyable than my first game of CaK.

I first found out about the game from some folks here on PC, and we proceeded to play a few rounds together.

Let's just say that some of them hate me now. :v

I only learned about Catan recently and I haven't played it much but I loved it when I did! It's a great game with just enough strategy to keep it interesting whilst still being simple enough for anyone to enjoy.

Since there's an online version of this, Catan is another game I'm totally up for playing with other PC-ers sometime. c:

I love catan, it's one of my favorite games. I've got the german version for some reason, and a ton of translation sheets so I actually know what the cards say.
Does anyone else trade for out-of-game items (like, "I'll trade you 2 sheep for a chocolate cookie"?)
I'd very much like to try the online version, as long as it doesn't require flash player.

I've played this all of once, it was a few years back whenever I was hanging out with some people and they suggested we all play this game while we were there. I know half of the people there were already familiar with how it worked, while the other half (including me) had never touched it in their life, so...yeah.

I don't remember who ended up winning, I'm sure it wasn't me though. :'D But I guess it was fun enough. Not quite as hard to learn as I thought it would be.

I find it's a lot of fun to have a goal besides winning, like hoarding all of one type of material. I had a game where I was the only one who got rocks (ore? whatever they're called) and I could extort all the other materials out of everyone.

I remember a game where sheep became currency. Luckily, I had a 2-1 trade route on sheep, and could swap them for whatever I wanted.

I've been playing Catan for ten years or so, making it one of the first "real" board games I've played. It's really easy to get into, but every game is different, depending on how the lands and numbers are located. I find it hard to play just the base game though, as I'm spoiled by the cool expansions. I agree with Arc that Cities and Knights completely changes the game, but nothing less fun!

Best part of the game is making a sneak attack with the build of a sudden three streets plus two more from a development card and cut off another player's access to half the island or build a town on a crossing they'd liked to have. Yeah, I'm evil in this game.

Never played the expansions beyond the seafarers once. I'm hesitant to since I hate when you mess with something that's already pretty well balanced. The comments here make me think it might be the right decision.

I've never played anything but the vanilla game and the vanilla expansion allowing 5-6 players total. My family and I play a few times a week ever since we bought it around this times last year. Unfortunately, none of them seem to have the right mindset for trying to win games, so despite the many times we've played, I've only not won 3 or 4 times. :/

Thankfully that's a different story when I've played online a few times with other PCers. Now you guys know what you're doing :D

Well my Local Game Store allows people to bring home board games for free to test out, we brought it home today, can't wait to finally play it.

Though one thing I noticed about the game is that every expansion has yet another 5-6 player expansion that you have to buy? I understand back when the game was coming out, but now as it got a re-branding, I don't see a reason why its not more included? Another tile based game I play (Carc), comes with 5 players, the next expansion (Which I'll admit should've been included base game in its new edition) comes with a 6th, and each expansion from then if it includes new player pieces comes with 6 player pieces.

It's probably just down to the money. I don't know what company owns the rights to the game or distribution, but if it's not Parker Bros or some other large, well established company it probably needs to get what money it can by charging for extras like that. It's kinda meh. Can't really blame them for it though.

It does make you want to make your own board though like one of these:

Finally played my first game, though one of my brothers was leaving so he didn't so it was just 2 players, bit boring because of that, but the game is better then I thought. The question is paying $50? to own it, or just keep renting it every now and then.

Hey now I don't hate you.

But not hate, silly.

You however...

Nah, in all seriousness I quite like Catan, it isn't my favorite thing in the world, but learning to play and then proceeding to play with PC peeps was rather entertaining. Especially that part where I claimed Ullion was the second coming of Hitler and tried to convince the other players to cut him out of all trading and roadways. We've had some good times.

Mayfair games distributed it in North America, though pretty sure that is about to or has very recently changed. My copy is rather old, back from when they first brought it here.

Favorite tactics...
Well, we usually randomize the tiles before placing the numbers, so always shoot for either monopolizing a resource that will be scarce later on or just being on the widest range of numbers possible. In 5-6 player games, make a point of 3-road blocking anyone who looks like they might be trouble later on.

Favorite thing to do later on is offer really crazy deals, like "my hand for a dev card" (not an actual one, but resources for one) or "all this stuff for a single blah". Throw so many resources at someone that it overrides that general sense of impending doom that prevents them trading with anyone close to winning.

Longest road is probably the easiest thing to lose if somebody is aggressive about breaking up your roads with their own. It's unreliable in any of our games.
