This is what I'm currently watching on my screen whilst farming with incense:

17:50: Gym controlled by team Valor!
17:51: Gym under attack; Valor pushed out and defeated!
17:51: Gym controlled by team Valor again! 10 CP Zubat is guarding the gym.
17:52: Gym under attack; Valor pushed out again!
17:52: Gym controlled by team Valor again; 437 CP Pidgeot is guarding the gym.
17:53: Gym under attack; Valor pushed out again!
17:53: Gym controlled by team Valor! Rinse and repeat.

Feel so bad for whoever is trying to take over the gym, it most be so frustrating to constantly have the gym sniped from you after going through so many battles to take it down. If this is happening in such a small village like mine then I dread to think how big the problem is in other places. What do you think about gym sniping? Is this something you've ever done yourself? Do you think gyms should be made to automatically swap control to whoever defeated the gym rather than having the neutral period after being taken down?

I have been victim to gym sniping as well as I have been the source of it as well. However Gym sniping is actually not as frequent as a problem in my town, most people get tired of the constant tug of war from gym sniping that what most people (including myself) do is when we see a gym go down, we try to recognize the person or people who did it and we let them keep the gym until they leave. Most people here don't really camp out the gyms, they'll just take the gym and then walk on to the next one.

For me, once I see a gym has been taken over I'll find the group of people that appear to have their faces glued to their phones, I'll wait till they leave and then wait about another 10 minutes (generally until they are out of sight) and then I'll steal the Gym. Most of the time doing this prevents gym sniping in my area. Then again the town I live in is mostly a small resort town so it's not a hustling bustling city where there are probably hundreds of people flocking to gyms and possibly acting like jerks about it.

Update: Team Mystic has finally taken over the gym, woo!

@Mister Coffee, that's basically what I'm hoping will happen here but I think people might be taking the game a little too seriously right now XD Personally I strongly dislike gym snipers as it's just such a cheesy way to take over the gym and really stops the game being fun for the players who have to make a decent trek to even get close enough to take the gym once. Feels like a very over-the-top thing to do for such a casual game.

It's a huge problem in my city. The constant back and forth is enough to actually keep me out of that aspect of the game for the most part.

Seriously, within a few minutes you'll see the same gym switch hands multiple times here. I'm sure it must be frustrating to whomever is trying to take it down, but honestly there's no shortage of obsessed GO players here who are more than willing to camp out at a single gym all day just for bragging rights. I mean, it's not like it's getting you many Pokécoins to guard one gym...

Ugh that really sounds awful. And I know what you mean - there's a 24 hour cooldown on even claiming the coins for gym control so what on earth do people have to gain from this other than bragging rights? I guess that's enough for a lot of people though :p

Do you guys think this problem will die down as the initial popularity boom fades out?

Well, every competitive game will always have their Meta-Jerks. I personally just try to move on to other gyms or go back to hunting the moment I feel like a gym is futile to steal for a period of time. Plus I always think to myself that I'll just steal the gym later eventually.
Another uplifting thought that makes fighting gym snipers less futile is, beating a gym over and over again is probably the single fastest way to gain experience and level up. Although those snipers are being jerks at the moment, they're probably not thinking about how much more powerful the person taking the gym will eventually become because of all the experience they're getting and fastyer leveling they are doing because of constantly trying to steal the gym. Plus the team sniping the gym over and over again are merely delaying the inevitable. What goes around comes around and all that jazz.

If I'm with friends, we do it all the time if we're stationary in one area (e.g. one benefiting from multiple lures). It's usually only showing off our high CP Pokémon since we rarely insert the same Pokémon in there twice.

Then we play "Look for the disgusted look on the person's face across the street."

Gotta tap the phone faster.

Probably yes, except for those gyms which happen to be in good spots. There's a park in my town with four stops and a gym and that gym is either always under attack or stacked with 7 or 8 super strong Pokemon waiting for the inevitable attack.
