I don't have a screenshot of any Pikachu in my possession, but I just evolved my latest one into a Raichu.

Note the lightning bolt on its tail.

Male Raichu have larger/longer tips than females, as seen here:

(left: male, right: female)

Clearly the one I have in Pokémon GO is a female based on the model used. But the Pikachu I had did not have a heart in its tail. You'll just have to take my word for it.

In fact, I've never seen a female Pikachu model in Pokémon GO. If you have, that would be very interesting. Better yet, if you have a Raichu, look at its tail for me. Male or female model?

It seems like the development team just grabbed the female Raichu model and ran with that.

That's super interesting. I wish they handled the genders a bit better, but at the same time I can see them not caring. I'm not looking to far with the gender roles right now. ALTHOUGH I'm looking at model types now. Thanks for this! I never knew. :)

Wow, I never ever noticed that. I'm gonna have to look at my Raichu and see if it's male or female. It also surprises me that they would even put genders in right now because you can't breed (as of yet, who knows about the future.)

Unless proven otherwise with a Raichu male model, it seems they just grabbed a model (regardless of male/female) and used it so it wouldn't mean genders are in.

Pretty sure there are no genders in this game at all, for the Pokemon. They all have the same identical model and there are no 'male' and 'female' model. Where they differ in the main series, I suspect they just used one at random.

Would have been nice if they had made them match (use the female model for both evolutions, for example), but I don't see it as a big deal.

Hmm, that's strange.

I agree that Niantic probably just modeled it after whichever sprite or image they saw first; I'm assuming they weren't paying that much attention to detail when designing the models. Perhaps just an oversight since they weren't worried about genders, at least for now.
