We already knew we would get trading, we knew we would get more generations of Pokemon, but Niantic recently mentioned that they've been discussing the idea of introducing breeding to Pokemon Go.

How do you like that? If this is implemented, will it coincide with Ditto being discovered?

How much would you use a breeding feature?

Considering breeding is kind of Ditto's claim to fame, and he's not currently available in the game, I always expected that they were at least thinking about implementing breeding in some way. Why else would you wait to release such an innocuous Pokémon? Maybe the mechanisms for transform were too difficult? I don't know, just speculating.

I'd love to see breeding in GO. I think once we really hammer out the competitive play, and we're getting closer each day it seems, there will be a real desire for this to get the perfect Pokémon. I just wonder how they're suddenly going to turn on gender after all this time, or maybe the data value is already there and hidden. Either way, it's exciting to look forward to.

Eh. I'm not too keen on the idea. One of the beauties of Go is its accessibility to non-Pokemon players. And I think breeding, while I do a lot of it in the main series, is just something that will only complicate things. I'm not saying I'm entirely opposed to it either really, if it happens, it happens. I know I'll enjoy it. But for how simple the game is currently, I just don't want it to get more complicated. If breeding is introduced in an easy to go through manner, that's one thing, but. I guess we'll see.

Breeding is a tricky topic for GO - on one hand you have the aged Pokémon fans who are striving for the perfect Pokémon and would love a feature like this to make it feel like a real Pokémon experience and to obtain a team they're truly proud of, but on the other hand you have all of the non-hardcore fans who will have to put up with these new breeds of Pokémon defending all of the gyms they want to have casual fun battles with. If it means they release Ditto then I'm all for it as I adore the little guy, but I'm definitely not a huge advocate of breeding in GO in general for the above reasoning. Also it'll cost more Pokécoins to buy breeding slots or whatever and I'm already stripped for those!

Interesting replies!

I thought people would be more for it. The sentiment about it making the game too complicated is an interesting one, as I've heard a lot of people complain *the other direction* that they have been frustrated with the casual or new Pokemon fan falling in love with this.

But maybe the people who were complaining about that are some of the ones who will like the feature if it happens?

The more I think about it, the more I think I would actually prefer breeding over trading (or maybe 'cloning' rather than breeding).

With breeding instead of trading, you still have to go out and catch (or walk around and hatch) new pokemon to fill your 'dex rather than relying on trading (which could end up making the game too easy if it doesn't come with some restrictions). But once you have two of that pokemon (or that pokemon and a ditto, or 'cloning' item that could come from pokestops) you can then create eggs (maybe 1k eggs?) that will hatch into more of that pokemon, getting rid of some of the tediousness of getting enough candies to evolve and level up pokemon that aren't common in your area.

This is how I feel on the matter also. It's revived attraction from TONS of old and new players, and most of the old players don't play competitively or even breed (I did a poll on two other forums and tumblr). So I was instantly shocked. The concept is really cool, but it can either backfire or not get the attention breeding is known for. Plus it's only gen 1 pokemon, which, unless they make breeding done different in PoGo I don't see it going far. I'm not up for it, but if they add it, cool. If not, cool too!

I don't personally see how it will confuse things too much? Surely it will just be 'pick one Pokemon, here's a list of compatible pokemon to pick, okay, here's your egg'. Sure if you wanted to breed the perfect IV pokemon you could. but if you just wanted to beed for fun, Johnny Casual could do that with no problem at all. It would just be a nice way of farming for candies by breeding eggs of the species you want to get more of.

I'm all for it anyway.

I hope it doesnt take too long to bring in breeding, ive got to the point now that most eggs i hatch are pokemon i already have enough of and getting 10k eggs are really rare. Also since some 5/10k eggs are rarer than other 5/10k ones it will need a massive amount of eggs to just get 1 of certain pokemon. If breeding doesnt come in then it will be infuriating later in the game to try to hatch really rare pokemon and ending up with loads of Jynx instead. If all you need is 1 of each type then you can start breeding them it will make it more exciting again to hatch the eggs.

since they havent included gender yet then all pokemon could breed with a ditto then collect the eggs. Unless they randomly generated gender for the pokemon you already have.
Yeah, I hope they go the Ditto route. Randomly generated genders would be frustrating and silly and potentially problematic to some of the Pokemon I've named.

Eh, I can see the use in it, it would certainly add a new dimension to the game, and it's a popular enough feature that people have been crying out for it to be added so I guess it would be a solid addition.

Personally, I can't stand breeding. It was literally my least favourite feature of the 2nd generation games, and I only ever did it for the sake of completing my Pokedex. I'm having a hard enough time as it is trying to get my head around IVs and CP and the competitive side of Go atm without throwing an extra feature into the equation.

I think i'd solely use breeding for gaining extra candies from Pokemon which are hard to come by.

The only thing about breeding is, surely players could just breed certain Pokemon repeatedly in order to gain easy candies? I think to avoid this the eggs would have to be either 5k or 10k in order to prolong the grinding of candies.

Apart from that, it would be interesting to see players trying for the perfect Pokemon with the best moveset and CP. I probably won't end up doing that myself but I'm just wondering how Niantic will actually incorporate the feature.

I agree that bred eggs should take longer maybe double the current length to balance it out, currently I'm trying to only improve the Pokemon that have the best moves available but it might not be worth doing yet until everything is balanced and no more changes

I'd be okay with it being added, but I wouldn't want it to be too easy to spam.

How I imagine it could work: you'd have to leave two compatible Pokemon at a stop (unless they want to introduce daycare spots), and that when enough time has passed to make an egg your Pokemon would be returned to you automatically when you go past any pokestop (because you can't necessarily return to the same one) and they'd also give you an egg which you hatch like you do now. The time it takes to create an egg would be similar to the one with collecting bonuses from gyms, about a day.

So in order to get an egg you'd have to get to your nearest pokestop, give up using two Pokemon for a day and you'd still have to hatch the egg.

That's a great idea! I would love that.

Niantic has said they want to do more with Pokestops, so maybe they're even considering something like this? In any case, I wish they would... great thought.
