I've completed the Regional Dex for Emerald, and I found it great fun :) I'm just too lazy to do it consistently :P I wish the pokedex did a little bit more in pokemon for some reason, though. I don't know exactly why :P
I really enjoyed the Habitat list in B2W2, I think it was? It was one of the best new features I've seen on the Pokedex. How do you all think the Rotom Dex will work?

I completed the Regional Dex for Emerald too and actually found it really fun :)

I've never had the time to do it since though and I think the problem is there isn't really an incentive to complete it, in Emerald you got the Johto starters which was cool but in FRLG Professor Oak was literally just like "well done"...

The Pokedex itself is a really cool device and I like it in the anime too, I also had the same one as Volpe.

I kind of want to know how people get the motivation for completing the Pokedex? oO Especially as we move from generation to generation, the task seems a bit more arduous than before...
Quite frankly, I would be very motivated to complete the pokedex in all games if I structured myself better; it's pretty fun when I get myself organized. If I started up a clean slate Living Nat dex, I think I'd get a decent chunk into the Dex. The biggest strife for me is, of course, leveling up, but I think it's easier in the recent Generations.

Living Shiny-dex, though... Has anyone even attempted it? XD

Have you completed any Pokédexes? How many?
0 sadly D:, I know, I'm a terrible Pokémon fan. BUT. I'd almost completed my Pokédex in Crystal wayyy back lmao
Is it something you try to achieve in your playthroughs?
No :( I want to complete it but I never find the will to carry out it
What do you actually think of the device itself? Cool idea or no?
I think the Pokédex is a great idea!!! Very much a cool idea :)
If yes, why?
Because it records all the Pokémon & gives more insight of them, + it has features that come with it that's very helpful :) (ex. where you can find the Pokémon in the region)
Have you ever owned a Pokédex yourself?
No :( but I have some Pokéballs !

That sounds so horrifically obscure and tedious, what is Living Shiny-Dex?

Also my issue is actually getting started and planning how I'd complete a Dex of the size it is now, once I get into the swing of things I reckon it would actually be rather easy, simple and potentially relaxing!

Who knows, maybe in Sun/Moon I will try to complete the Pokédex, gives me a reason to buy and play the game :D.
A living Pokedex is when you have at least one of each pokemon, ie. 1 Bulbasuar, 1 Ivysaur, 1 Venusaur, etc. For the whole Pokedex.
A living Shinydex would be the same, except every single one needs to be shiny.

That's why I suggested it to be so impossible no one would do it.

I think my sister actually used to have a Pokédex toy as a kid - think I also stole it a couple times with the justification "I like Pokémon more than she does!". As for in-game - I've never completed one, but maybe I will someday.

Oh are we also talking about pokedex toys? I had a pair of those a while ago. I forget if they had any pokedex functions to speak of, but one was a small mini game tablet thing that I can't find :p The other one, which was the older one, I left at a hotel when I was very young :( Gone forever :p

I completed 3 games, Yellow, mostly Crystal and Y. The first 2 died shortly after beating the Champion so didn't get a chance to complete the pokedex. But I am trying to complete a living dex for Y, I'm at 683 I believe.

I started it shortly after beating AZ. First I went back to each route and caught every Pokémon I needed, as well as extras for their evolutions. Then I leveled them up in Victory Road using Mew and EXP Share to evolve them quickly. This included Volcarona, Braviary, Hydreigon, Mandibuzz. I've actually encountered 3 full odds shinies in Victory Road while doing this. Then I bought X and a 2ds in order to complete all trade evolutions, well all trade evolutions that didn't involve stones that you only get 1 of in the game. Like Moon Stone, Dusk Stone, Sun Stone, Shiny Stone, Thunder Stone, etc. Then I transferred quite a few Pokémon from Black 2, ie Clefable and Sunflora which took stones I only had 1 or 2 of. I also Wonder Traded at this time, was able to get Wurmple, Golem and Slakoth.

After that I discovered Friend Safari and was able to catch about 30-40 Pokémon I could get there.

Then I discovered GTS, and with Level 1 Cleffa's in Ultra Balls I was able to get pretty much any non legendary/non fully evolved starter in the game I still needed, even Gallade, Mismagius, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Togekiss, Uxie and Azelf.... However I decided I only wanted to GTS Pokémon that needed a stone that wasn't buyable in the game. That means I didn't GTS Kingdra, Electivire, Porygon2, Porygon-Z, Gliscor, Magmortar or Weavile but instead saved up BP for them. And I evolved all friendship evolutions by riding my bike back and forth with them in my party.

Right now aside from legendary Pokémon I only need Clauncher, Clawitzer and Magmortar. I plan to fish for Clauncher in X when I get there and catch the legendaries in Omega Ruby, though I'm not sure about Kyogre/Latias.

I would personally start with a Regional Dex; the biggest hurdles for me are trading/transferring. I consider it easier to level up a Pokemon with EXP share than to trade things around, but maybe I'm stuck in my old generation ways :P
In any case, the pride I felt when I finally completed my Emerald Regional Dex was nearly overwhelming; I would do it again in a heartbeat. I only got a lousy certificate though

I don't remember if I owned a Pokedex or not. I feel like I did but... I really can't remember it clearly.

I completed the National Pokedex on my Alpha Sapphire version a few months ago. Then I put all of the Pokemon in Bank so now it's there as a living dex that I can transfer to any of my games if I want the shiny charm :)

I never bothered to complete one, I don't see a reason to. My current play style when it comes to Pokemon is to catch only a few Pokemon and focus on them and add more as I play while also catching a few for the PC from time to time. I don't have a 3DS and I've yet to play Gen 5/2 anyways and I never had friend with which to trade so the idea of completing it was always impossible for me. I did manage to see every native species on Pearl though, I think.
The only think I want more from the pokedex is actual information alongside the rumours and speculations. I love fantasy and silly things, but Pokemon are interesting enough to warrant some science along the lines of Harry Potter and such.

Do you mean battle information and such? I agree, a little item on the side could show the general base stat set. This would be just a neat little feature, and it wouldn't be all too useful compared to using the internet, but I would really enjoy some information actually does something for battling located within the pokedex.

If you mean scientific explanations of Pokemon and their powers, I would also enjoy a little more explanation and logic on their powers, of course. A little more accuracy would be nice too :p

Yes, I meant scientific explanations, nothing too big to bore you, just a neat little section about food habits and things like that. I also like your idea, but I think it could be better presented as "Strong point:/Weak point:". Some information on their signature moves and/or most used ones would also be appreciated.

To anyone who's actually completed the Pokedex: was it really worth it doing so? It must've taken a ridiculous amount of effort, and I guess this is coming from someone who hasn't managed to do so before. :\ Reason being is that it seems like a whole lot of effort, especially as more and more Pokemon are being introduced every generation.
It didn't take that long, especially now that it's so easy to get people to help you. If you just want to complete the Pokedex and not have a living one of your own, it's even easier because people will just tradeback Pokemon to you often for free.

I have both ORAS and XY so what I did was basically take my trusty Breloom from Littleroot Town all the way to Ever Grande City after I beat the game and get every single Pokemon on the DexNav. I had to catch a few of them twice because I wanted a living dex, but this can be cut down if you don't want to do that. I also did some of this in XY, but I had already caught a lot of Pokemon so I didn't really need to do this as aggressively. I also transferred some Pokemon from older games since I had a lot. I kind of cheated to get the legendaries, though. What I did is I transferred some shiny legendaries from older games and cloned them and put them on the GTS for other legendaries I actually didn't have.

If you want a real challenge, do a living dex where you must catch every Pokemon in the order of the National Dex, where ones caught out of order don't count. If you want a *real* real challenge, do a living Shinydex, where every single one of those is Shiny. If you want a *REAL* real challenge, combine the two.

Have fun! :D

having a living dex or a dex with at least one evolution of an evolution family is extremely helpful. it means i can breed whatever i want whenever i want :P the only problem is that i don't have a HA dex so i'd have to ask other ppl for HA mons that i don't have :(

just upload starters and you'll get nearly every pokemon (skiddo and stantler are super rare for some reason...) . i got an aegislash, competitive tyranitar, competitive electivire for some random starters i bred :P

Yikes! RIP indeed

So in that situation, would you be happy to just get back into a game and complete its Pokédex? Or is it such a daunting/huge task that you wouldn't do it again?

Really I'm curious as to what spurs people to be so set on completing them!
it feels great to complete it xd it's a pretty big task but not the most daunting thing to do if u know how to complete it and if u break it down and set targets.

also gen 6 is my first official game so i thought why not plus with gen7 coming out i can just transfer my living dex over which means I'll only need to complete the alola dex :)

plus SHINY CHARM!!! i breed a lot and i managed to breed a shimy phione hehhe

By the way, do you guys think Alola Forms will count as the same Pokemon in the Dex?
there'll probably be a key item or something that allows them to change forms like the reveal glass for the genies

Personally I think the Alola forms are their own Pokemon. Meaning regular Vulpix evolve into regular Ninetales and Alola Vulpix evolve into Alola Ninetales.

Same with Exeggcute, only Exeggcute caught in Alola will evolve into Alola Exeggcutor, Exeggcute from Kalos or Hoenn or Sinnoh or Unova all evolve into regular Exeggcutor.

I think the Alola form will appear in the Pokedex if you see it first then the regular will appear if you trade it over first.

I feel like the method Gen I used was pretty good, how they would give you stuff based upon how many Pokemon you've caught, but I believe I saw someone complaining about the same.
Gen V (and beyond?) have the Charms you can get for completing the Dexes. It's all a matter of opinion, of course, but I would like to see some rewards that kick in sooner than hundreds of entries in, as well. Something in between would be perfect (still with the Shiny Charm at full National Dex, though)
