As most of us are likely aware of, a lot of the animal-based Pokemon designs for 7th Gen are based on species known to be endangered, vulnerable or extinct.

Examples we've seen so far include a Pueo owl (Rowlet), Iriomote cat (Litten), Hawaiian monk seal (Popplio), Koala (Komala), Hawaiian Poi dog (Rockruff), Coconut crab (Crabrawler), Hawaiian Honeycreeper (Oricorio), Lion (Solgaleo), Ghost bat (Lunala), Chinese/Japanese Giant salamander (Salandit) and a few others that I can't list. This theme is tied to even further with Mudbray's bio on the official site saying the Pokemon was hunted to near-extinction, further fitting into the theme.

That said, what do you think of the endangered species theme with the new Pokemon? What other endangered or extinct animals would like to see used for Pokemon in this generation?

I know the tiger, wolf, and dolphin Pokemon are coming (all three on the endangered species list), so here's a list of endangered/extinct animals I like to see:

Asian Elephant
Javan Rhinoceros
Snow Leopard
Cheetah
Chimpanzee
Lemur
Cassowary
Dodo
Komodo Dragon
Red-Eye Tree Frog
Tiger Shark
Stegosaurus
Dromeosaurid

I'm liking a lot of Pinkie's ideas here, especially these ones - snow leopard, cheetah, chimpanzee, lemur, cassowary, dodo and komodo dragon.

While Doduo and Dodrio's names do come from dodo, I personally don't think they are actually based on a dodo so I hope that for this generation we get an actual dodo Pokemon. I don't think we've had a cheetah, lemur, cassowary, komodo dragon, snow leopard (or even a leopard in general because I don't think Liepard is a leopard) or chimpanzee for Pokemon yet so they would be great candidates for this generation. Chimchar's design does have it being without a tail like a chimpanzee, but its design is more in line with monkeys.

Also, Litten's design pretty much indicates a tiger-based evolution (even moreso when you consider that concept art of the starters' final evos) and since Alola is Pokemon's answer to Hawaii, we need our dolphin Pokemon because everyone has wanted it for so damn long.

Just like to point out that these are also endangered:
Pikipek (Imperial Woodpecker or the Ivory Billed-Woodpecker)
Yungoos (In some area it is endangered. In also wiped out a lot of Hawaiian Birds)
Vikivolt (Stag Beetle. Extinct in a lot of countries)
Bewear (Possibly Red Panda that is endangered)

Those are some of the ones possibly based on endangered species.

After spending about 15 minutes looking, I finally found the list I posted that I would like to see. I said these back in like May or early June, so some may be out.

Endagered:
Spoiler:

Wildabeast - I would love to see more pokemon similar the Zebstrika's line, but with this animal.
Real Rhinos - I know we have Rhihorn, but I would love to see a pokemon similar to Hippodon. With both Black and White being endangered, it would be a nice split evolution.
Tapir - I have always wanted to see a Tapir Pokemon ever since I learned of its existence.
River Dolphin.
Numbat
Parrot
Macaw
Elephant - But I hope it is an evolution of Donphan
Armadillo
Axolotl
Civets
Komodo Dragons
Gharial
Markhor
Snow Leopard
Tasmanian devil
Takin
Narwhal
Tiger Shark

Extinct:
Spoiler:
Sabre-Tooth Tiger
Wooly Mammoth
Pyrenean Ibex
Dodo
Flying Fox
Parasaurolophus
Pterodactyl
Stegosaurus
Ankylosaurus
Triceratops

Confirmed that I wanted:
Spoiler:
Imperial woodpecker or Ivory-billed woodpecker
Giant Salamanders
Tortoise

The doduo line is a mix of the dodo and the moa and the ostrich. IDK about the ostrich being endangered, but the moa is extinct.

Turns out you seem to know quite a bit about animals. Didn't even know the moa was a thing but interesting to see that was part of its shtick.

It definitely is in the lacking wings that you can see the moa relation. The next closest is the kiwi, and that is way too small to a a fitting relation.

To up the sciencing!

If I had to explain the beak I'd point to wading birds as a long beak like that is usually seen in birds that catch fish. While doduo doesn't mention wading it's long thin legs would let it do so quite easily.

The feet are definitely ostrich and terror bird inspired as those claws get pretty big and scary.

But yeah among friend I'm called the "Pokemon Ranger" because 1. I know way to much about pokemon as animals and from a natural side of things and 2. because I'm actually working to become a Park Ranger.

Heck I'm writing a textbook on the pokemon universe and writing fanfiction based on that textbook. This is what I do for fun.

Oh right being on topic...

Rhinos (I love rhyhorn, but he's very different from rhinos.)
A Sifaka lemur (zaboombafu!)
A zanzibar leopard
Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger, I will name him Ty and love him)
Sea Cow or Manitee (Literally the water equivalent of snorlax and people are jerks to them.))

I'm also not an animal expert, but I'm loving their work on creating Pokémon based on endangered species. It makes people know and learn more about them, possibly making people care about these poor animals. At least that's what they did to me. I'm starting to get worried about the amount of endangered species out there :/ Nonetheless, I'm loving all their work ^^

I do understand your point because I may be no animal expert but Sun & Moon has been helping me learn about just how many obscure species are out there. Stuff like the Mata Mata Turtle, Bee Fly, Hawaiian Honeycreeper, Poi Dog and even the mangosteen fruit were among several things I never knew about until now. I had heard of Coconut Crabs but it was interesting to find out they were actually intolerable to water.

It would be cool to see this theme carried throughout S/M. If this is the case then that list of endangered animals would be a great set of new Pokemon. We already have Doduo and Dodrio but I guess they could always have another Dodo Pokemon. Litten's final starter evolution would be the perfect Cheetah Pokemon, however that final starter leak doesn't really support this so idk.

Not to mention Litten becoming a Cheetah would mess up the Chinese Zodiac theme the Fire starters are going.

Think it was said somewhere, but Litten I think is supposed to tiger based. It matches the Chinese Zodiac theme we have had and with the orange and black color and striped, it also seems to be a tiger. Tigers are also endagered, and if that is the case, I could possibly see Litten's line of shiny form being white and black.

I would love to have a Dodo pokemon and a Dolphin pokemon.

Spoiler:
I always have kind of treated "Gorebyss" as if it were a Dolphin pokemon... I know it's supposed to be an eel, but it looks so much like a Dolphin and that's one of the many reasons why it's my favorite pokemon.
If they made a solid Water type Dolphin pokemon that has a beautiful visual design and a great move pool, it could possibly end up being my favorite pokemon of all time, *holds Gorebyss tightly* ...but i doubt it.

As mentioned above, Litten's evolution line is likely to go down the tiger route since we have to take into account the Chinese Zodiac pattern of the Fire-type starters, and tigers being an endangered animal themselves fits even more into this game, so it doubly makes sense.

We already have a parrot, axolotl, mammoth, and pterodactyl (the last two, maybe), but everything else you mention would be nice additions. A narwhal is one of the best ones here.

Just a question, but is there a tuna Pokémon yet? Because from what I've heard, tuna is endangered.

Also, there technically is a dolphin Pokémon. Kyogre is based off a killer whale (I think), which is actually part of the dolphin family.

I would like an evolution line for a parrot and an actual parrot not Chatot. Ones that are actual colorful. Possibly a split evolution with a Red and Blue Parrot. I don't consider Kyogre a Dolphin I mean an ACTUAL dolphin as in it actually looks like one. Most people don't consider anything we have a dolphin. Piloswine is a big pig, hence the name swine, not really a mammoth. Which is why I don't really consider it one. I know it is probably based on a mammoth as well as a boar, but I would prefer to have one that looks a bit more like a mammoth that is possibly pure Ice or something. Or even completely different typing.

I don't know if with have an Axolotl. I don't see a pokemon that looks anything like it to be honest. Aerodactly I don not really consider the one I am thinking of. The one I am thinking of has a horn that comes out of his head and curves behind it. Aero has a flat head.

Bluefin tuna is severely over fished, so I could see it working in with the theme. And no, I do not think there is a tuna pokemon. It would be nice to have, as well as a swordfish, but not sure if swordfish are endangered or threatened. But I know a ton of fish are I believe.

I really want Donphan to evolve into a Elephant that is the size, if not bigger, than Mamoswine. Possibly evolving in a similar way of Piloswine and being more of an elephant or something. If not Donphan, than another pokemon. I have always considered Donphan and Mamoswine somewhat companions. I was disappointed when Donphan didn't get an evolution.

Mudkip line (and Wooper to a lesser extent) says hi. If you notice the "fins" on Mudkip and its evos' cheeks they are very much based on axolotls.

I am so confused by the point you are trying to make here. So you're saying we don't have a Mammoth pokemon because you don't think that the pokemon that we have (that's supposed to be a mammoth) is not mammoth enough for you? Also the name of "Piloswine" being a reason of why it's not a mammoth makes absolutley no sesnse because it very clearly evolves into "Mamoswine" which very clearly has "Mamo-" in the name which clearly represents "Mammoth".
Then after all that you say that you're pretty sure it is based on a Mammoth?
I'm just... sorry, I just was legitimately confused by what you were trying to say about the Swinub family.

If all you're trying to say is you think we should have another Mammoth pokemon with a different design and typing alongside of the mammoth pokemon family we already currently have, I would totally be comfortable with that point and opinion, but the backlash you are making over the Swinub family just seriously makes no sense to me.

I so that is what that name is based on.

As for Swinub line. They are pigs. Mamoswine is only a combination. I just want a Mammoth Pokemon period. What I am trying to say is I want a mammoth line. Not some pig/Mammoth Hybrid like Mamoswine. I consider it a pig because it is a swine and it doesn't have a trunk. Therefore, to me, it is not a mammoth.

You guys ever seen a Chinese or Japanese salamander? That ain't Salandit. If anything, due to its typing, it's probably based off of a Fire Salamander but that isn't endangered at all :c.

I don't think they intentionally draw on endangered animals for designing Pokémon, instead they're just using the weird and wonderful designs they can find in nature and that tends to lead to animals that are rare. In Sun/Moon's case this means mostly Hawaiian species as well which further limits their options, that and it seems a lot of endemic wildlife there is under threat.

Not all the new Pokemon designs are entirely Hawaiian-themed, such as Komala being a koala (an Australian native animal) and Litten being based on an Iriomote cat (which is found in Japan).

Because of this supposed trend, I'd like to see a Pokémon based on a Hawaiian crow, especially in its flavor.

I would like an evolution line for a parrot and an actual parrot not Chatot.
What's not colorful about Chatot?

I so that is what that name is based on.
Their names aren't derived from any species AT ALL, but that doesn't simply mean they're not based off the axolotl.

A few more notes: Drowzee is based off a tapir, and saying you want a Pokémon based off a parrot and another based off a macaw is redundant, as macaws are parrots.

I don't really consider Drowzee a tapir. It stands on two feet. It would be better if there was one that looked a bit better is design. And I didn't mean the name I meant the pokemon as a whole. That was a typo on my part.

As for chatot, it has black in it which is one reason i do not like it.

And no chatot is based on a masked love bird which is a bit different from what I want to see.

What I want to see is something like this, ones that actually look tropical. Ones that would match Alola and they are a lot different from a chatot.

Spoiler:

Also, just because we have one of something, does not mean we can't have another of that type. We have a ton of different turtles. We have a ton of fish. And even though they are not exactly the same, they are still a similar type.

There's some black in this bird...

OK, OK, Chatot does look a bit like a lovebird, but...um...

WAIT A SECOND.

(puts on hypothetical glasses) Masked lovebirds are, according to Bulbapedia, a small kind of parrot.
