What are your opinions on Pokémon that evolve by trade? Some Pokémon need merely be traded to a friend, while others also require a particular item in order to progress to their next stage. Obviously this was added as a way to encourage trading between friends and probably to encourage players to try and get their friends into the game series, boosting sales, but it's a pretty big inconvenience for players who don't know many people who also play the game. Two questions:

Did you find Trade Evolutions inconvenient before the introduction of online trading?

Do you feel that online trading has mitigated this effect?
I've never traded online, so I'm not sure how convenient it is to trade a Pokémon to get an evolution and then request it back. I'd imagine it's not, since there's no guarantee that your partner won't just keep the evolved form. I have no idea if there are systems in place to prevent this.

I've never been a fan of trade evolutions because pre-online trading I found it to be a huge inconvenience and then, as someone else said, for online trading you need to make sure you're trading with someone who's trustworthy. Plus for people like me who don't really have friends who play the games, it's a matter of searching around on the internet for someone who will be willing to do that favor for you.

My household has more than one console that can handle the 3DS games now, so I can just trade with myself if I have to, but it's still so much work just to get an evolution.

I appreciate the concept behind trade evolution but... not everyone has a lot of friends or friends with the same interests so it can be really hard on some people. Especially younger people who may feel left out.

I do find them inconvenient especially because the majority of the Pokemon you can get by trading are super cool. I mean it's easier now there's online trading but that only applies to Gen 6 onwards, if you want to get a trade evolution Pokemon for a playthrough of an older game you'll most likely have to go through the hassle of getting out two DS's which is a shame.

It's impossible before 3DS and XY arrives as you'll need a friend who have same/different game to trade with, but now it's possible, but you may need a trustworthy person just to get the pokemon that traded for evolution back because they're only thing that you can count on and avoid your pokemon taken away.

Trade evolutions have always been a pet peeve of mine, because of how circumstantial and difficult it is to get certain Pokemon in result of it. You need to know a trustworthy person who also has the game, and they need to be willing to trade. Plus, sometimes you need an item that you don't have, so even if the opportunity comes up, you can't. I know trade evolutions exist to encourage trading and such, but frankly, it doesn't need to exist.

I ended up buying a 2ds and a second game in order to evolve all the Pokemon that needed trading to evolve and now they are sitting in Pokemon bank in my living dex so I won't have to worry about trade evolutions ever again. At least not until I get the shinies.

In hindsight I probably could have put a bunch of level 1 Cleffa's on Gts and got all the trade evolutions, but I kind of liked trading. Sometimes I'll trade the items over first so I can have the Pokemon evolve on my main game.

In terms of what I think of them, I think they are a good idea but also an inconvenience. I played Yellow when it first came out but I don't think I really traded on it until many years later when I traded a Kadabra from Crystal back to Yellow. I had an incidence with Blue when I was trading the starters over to fill out the Pokedexes, my Blue game froze and I lost Wartortle forever.

You see, I love the Pokémon that evolve from trade, and I like the reason why too, since it's a way to make friends, (or to convince one to buy the games, whatever). I know pre-online trading sucked... I didn't have anyone to trade with, but now we have PSS, which gets the job done. The only downside is, you actually don't know who you're trading with, which makes me kinda worried, 'cause I don't know if the person is trustworthy or not. I get so paranoid imagining someone stealing my Pokémon >.<

Before the invention of online trading, yes, it was pretty inconvenient especially if you didn't have anyone around who also played the games. Another option would have been was to buy another system, which can get expensive. With the addition of online trading, it makes it so much easier. I also think the internet in general has helped this a lot in finding people to help you out. Though I wouldn't be too upset if they removed them completely.
