When you just lie in bed and stare into the ceiling and your body or mind really doesn't want to relax... What do you do?

I play Pokemon. (It's the main time I play Pokemon, actually.) I frequently find that my mind is full of thoughts and worries from the day, so it helps if I decompress and do something relaxing and familiar than doesn't involve too much mental energy. Pokemon works well because I'm very comfortable with it, so I don't have to think much while playing (especially if I just do something like train or go through a challenge on RBY), and because with the turn-based battle system, nothing happens to me if I doze off or become less focused on what I'm doing.

Cat vids?

My ex had melatonin pills. I was afraid of them, haha. Irrational, I know.

put some music on, think about stuff, and then try to relax and try again. this only happens like once a year for me though. :)

try tea??
Tea o: I have some tea called Sleepy Time Vanilla. That's gotta be made for situations like these.

If it gets to the point where I get anxious and frustrated about lacking sleep for the next day I try to accept it. I know eventually ill get some sleep and it will be a day just like any other. That at least calms me down. As for shutting your mind up when it won't stop, I have no tips. Ride it out until you pass out.

I often just stay up late, which probably doesn't help much. I go to bed when my brain feels like it can't stay awake any longer. Usually, I can fall asleep pretty easily if I just lay down and watch TV. I've done it many times without even realizing it. I know they say that watching is bad for you though, but it does help me relax more because it distracts my mind from running on it's non-stop motor plus having to deal with daily anxiety.

I just take Benadryl pills. Even one pill works really well at tiring me out so after waiting 30ish minutes I can usually head to bed and sleep fine. Rolling around in bed for 30 minutes is absolutely no fun and I have no other means of wearing myself out, especially right now since I'm not too physically active. I go out but it's nothing massively exhausting, though by the end of the day it does still help.

Drugs don't make me sleepy RIP.

Generally my brain just doesn't stop whirling away with random thoughts so to have any hope of getting to sleep I generally need to get them focused in on one thing like music or a documentary or something.

Alcohol actually.

...No, I don't drink myself to sleep in the sad way. It just happens to be that drinking enough booze can make me relaxed or sleepy. It's not something that'll work for everyone though, as alcohol doesn't effect everyone in exactly the same way.

Thissss. It doesn't always work, but sometimes if you give me a few glasses of red wine I am OUT.

Otherwise Rika, I am in the same sleepless boat as you and I wish I had tips to help, but alas I do not :( I sometimes take an antihistamine to help make me drowsy, but I don't do it often at all because I don't like the idea of depending on medicine.

Pretty much me. Sometimes I might do something like play my 3DS or watch tv, but a lot of times I just let my mind run until I eventually pass out.

I just don't sleep; I'll do it when I'm tired. I've gotten into a habit of sleeping during lunch hour on workdays; doing something I have to do at a time when I have to remain at a particular place anyway is great since it gives me more free time... in theory, though I fear the biology of sleep doesn't agree with such oven logic.

My boyfriend usually goes for the warm milk treatment to make himself fall asleep, but honestly that doesn't really work for me. Has anyone else tried that?

I go for the hot tea. Usually passionflower or green tea or basically anything that's not caffinated. I used to suffer from really bad insomnia that I had to go for sleeping pills that were effective 30 minutes before bedtime. Those seriously made me groggy and threw me off emotionally. So I just stick with tea.

I have seasonal insomnia, which, while most of the time isn't too bad, it's GOD AWFUL when the weather changes. Especially the summer and the heat.

Seriously I honestly have no idea how I even survive the month of July. I probably get like 10 hours of sleep total for the whole month.

I've given up trying to fight it, so what I usually do is I just go back to work until I literally just pass out. This works because in July I don't have to be anywhere the next day.

My friend told me that one day, when I'm an astrophysicist, this will be useful when I have to get up at two in the morning to observe a supernova or something like that happen (and you can't just wait until later, because later means literally waiting 100 million years).

Although sometimes when the winter phase hits, and I have to be at school the next day, I can't really do that. Or if the summer phase comes early (which it did last year because the weather was really crazy where I live that year) and hits while school is still in session (so May-Early June). What I usually did for that was I just sat in bed and talked to myself until I bored myself to sleep. Surprisingly it actually worked for me. I was still tired and groggy the next day, because I only got about four hours of sleep, but it was better than the one hour I would have gotten.

Sometimes you just have to take what you can get.

I also have f.lux installed on my desktop and (because f.lux is iOS only) Twilight on my phone, the blue light from screens makes your brain think it's daytime which makes it harder for it to go to sleep, so these help. Then I just put videos on, with no earphones in so I'm comfortable. I've recently found that quiz shows are great to fall asleep to but I'm weird and find them fun in the first place so idk.

I can't have any kind of computer now without f.lux on it, since I've gotten so used to it. Any desktop at least, since it wasn't until last week that I actually installed it on my tablet (usually if I'm using my tablet at night, it's to listen to things while falling asleep, so I won't usually be looking at the screen).

As for what I do to relax, I'll listen to videos if I think they'll actually put me to sleep. If I just need something to do to pass the time until I'm calm enough, then I might just get up and listen to music, play a game, work on something...

And if it's bad enough and nothing else has worked and if I need to get to sleep now, I just kinda force myself to lay there without fidgeting and clear my mind. Focus on the sound of my floor fan, at the very least.
