Hello and welcome!

There are so many games. In the first generation you can start off with Red, Blue, or Yellow. Those games were kinda remade so you could also go with LeafGreen and FireRed.

The game mechanics have changed drastically since then. If you want you can start with the latest which is XY.

There are also spin off games that aren't so heavily focused on battles and earning badges. Off the top of my head, Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon and Pokemon Ranger.

Hi Kint, nice to meet you, and welcome to the forum of Pokecommunity, I advise you to play the remake of Red/Blue games from GameBoy, which are FireRed é LeafGreen on GBA, then Diamond/Pearl or Platine, to do Black/White & Black 2/White 2, all of them on DS, before finishing with XY on 3DS.

This being said, playing Sapphire/Ruby or Emerald on GBA, or OR/AS on 3DS is up to you, but doing both is advisable :)

You should start with the older ones before the recent ones, or else you would probably found the old gameplay really slow :( I talk by experience ;)

Welcome kint. I suggest you not to play the latest pokemon game first. Start old to new.

Feel free to ask in the Pokémon Gaming Central section, it's the best place for these inquiries. Honestly everyone has different opinions, some people prefer starting with the newer games since you can experience the franchise in its most modern state but old -> new is a good idea too. Gives you an idea of how Pokémon grew over the years.

Welcome Kint! :-3 Hope you'll have a great time here and will enjoy playing through these games. They're awesome.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to be able to trade and battle but want to try a game that's maybe slightly older I think X or Y version is a great introduction to the current gen and will help you along the way. The reasons I say this is:
-it's the first game with mega evolution
-it's one of the easier games
-it's user friendly
-it has a lot of neat options
-it's slightly older and might go out of production soon
-it will set you up for ORAS and Sun & Moon
-you can still build some competitive sets
-it has a huge pokedex to fill

PS: IF it's a challenge you are looking for then Fire Red or Leaf Green. It gives you the original story which is very important as this is where the story all began. I am currently juggling between my OR, Y, Leaf Green, and White version atm. If you want to experience the originals, the Godfather's of the series and dont want to drop a lot of money atm you can go right on the Eshop for Red, blue, or Yellow version and buy that for $9.99. While I am bias towards Blue/Red I would recommend Yellow version for the larger number of pokemon you can catch plus all the kanto starters and a pikachu that will faithfully follow you. :)

I don't think the order matters too much; but at least you'd prooobably would want to play Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow or FR/LG first before moving on to Gold/Silver/Crystal or HG/SS, because of the continuity of the story in those games.

Other than that, I don't think it matters too much. I'd say start on whatever Pokemon Game interests you the most! Maybe you can pop on by the different Pokemon Generation boards here to have a look at each pokemon game and what they have to offer you.

I wish you all the best in your Pokemon playthroughs! Good luck! And have a great time; I hope we'll chat again!
