Personally, my first experience was with Gen III! Well, In reality, I started with the Gen II games, but I've always played my brother's copy of Silver version and I've never owned any Pokemon games myself until a while after, when I ordered Pokemon Ruby online on eBay and it arrived a few days later. It was exciting stuff!
If I may ask though, have you kept up with any of the Sun and Moon news, so far? With more news coming Tuesday, everyone's really excited for it! If you are, what version are you planning on getting, and what are your expectations?

I'm planning to get the sun version. The 3DS games have really improved the series in terms of story and character interaction, and I'm expecting Sun/Moon to continue that trend. The Aloha forms look interesting; I'm already wanting the ice versions of vulpix and ninetails.

My first Pokemon game was Sapphire, I do love seeing people who started with the original games. I bet it's quite amazing to see how everything has changed so far! personally, I think the best thing that ever happened to Pokemon was the 4th gen move split, it was so useful. Which is for you, the most important change on the Pokemon franchise?
Let me know if I can help you out! good luck with everything :)

For me, the introduction of held items was a major game changer. They greatly deepened the amount of strategy involved and added a bit of uncertainty to player vs player battles. The effect of this mechanic became very evident when the series first went online. In terms of convenience, my favorite changes are the introduction of super training and IV judges. That made things MUCH easier.
