Hi everyone,

I was first introduced to Pokemon with Pokemon Ruby as a 5-year old. As such, I missed out on playing the original Gen. 2 games. By the time HeartGold and SoulSilver came out, I had gotten out of Pokemon. Now that my passion for Pokemon is back, should I go back and play the Gen. 2 games to see why everyone who was old enough choose them as their favourite games? If so, would Gold/Silver or HeartGold/SoulSilver be a better choice?

Hello, and welcome to the Forums!

Anyways, it really depends. If you want to experience the originals, you should play it. You just need a proper system/emulator.

For HGSS, it's better if you want more replayability and a more clean and fixed game (There is also a lot more Pokemon in HGSS). There are emulators for DS, but they're a little bit harder to get. (Unless you already have a console)

I would prefer playing the originals, just because I usually prefer the original games over the remake.

If you want the experience of playing a much older generation, and have never played any Generation II game, I'd say go for it. Although I do recommend playing Crystal since it's a mix of Gold and Silver and is overall better. If you do decide to play these games, I really hope you enjoy yourself they really are great games. of couse after you do decide to play these, be sure to check out their remakes which are just as great.

If you want a classic feel, Play G/S/C. May not have the features it has today, but you can still get that classic 8-bit nostalgia and be familiarized with how Pokemon was played back then. HGSS brings the same feel but with more features such as new moves and abilities.

If you feel like going nostalgic and enjoying the good ol times i Suggest that you go back to playing G/S/C it may not be as good as it was back then but it's still worth playing it once more again.

Unless you're really into low res pixel graphics and old blipblop music and don't mind losing many mechanics that have been around for many years in main pokémon games now, HG/SS are probably better games to go with to experience Johto and the pokémon and story there. As much as I personally LOVE Crystal/Gold, it's got a lot to do with nostalgia and me actually appreciating the art style and music like that.

I would definitely recommend it, GSC give off a really classic feel, but also significantly improve upon a lot of the aspects of Generation One. I wish I could play Gen 2 again, but my internal battery has run dry on Crystal, so if you've got the chance, I would go back and play it.

In my opinion, both GSC and HG/SS are good in their own right. Although, if you really want to see the Gen 4 cross-evolutions, like Tangrowth and Mamoswine, you should go with HG/SS. If not, you can play one of the originals. Personally, I'd recommend Pokemon Crystal (unless you want Mareep, Girafarig, Remoraid, Vulpix, or Mankey, since they're not available in Crystal).
Do you like Pokemon battles? If yes, then come play The Great Pokemon Battle 13!
