Ultimate Electric Monotype Challenge - Alola Johto

Guess what I pulled an all-nighter doing?
I've been playing Pokemon Silver on an emulator for the past few days. Considering the dozens of times I've played through this game, I was able to finish it relatively quickly.

Update 1
Update 2
Update 3
Update 4
Pokemon League

I'm not doing these in order, obviously. I love Silver, though, and loved doing it with one of my favorite types.

Pokemon Y Ghost Monotype

So, after doing Blue and Platinum ground monotypes, I realized I don't enjoy ground types as much as I thought, My big 4 ground favorites Garchomp, Excadrill, Seismatoad, and Krookadile fit in 2 of my other favorite types (dragon, steel) with only 2 remaining. I don't really like the other grounds too much. So, I have given up on the Ground Ultimate Challenge after 2 regions. Instead I will move on to one of my three definite favorite types. And with that...

I started by choosing froakie, to use as an HM slave (surf/waterfall/strength/cut/rock smash). Since the first ghost wasn't until after the first gym, I sped past everything I could, getting froakie up to lvl 13 fors the first gym. After getting my first badge relatively easy, I quickly went and caught Pointy the honedge and a nincada.

I backtracked through everything I skipped and got both of them up to lvl 20, evolving nincada and gaining Shedinja, who I wasn't able to nickname sadly. I also added Balloon the Drifloon to the team. After reaching the next gym, I took a detour north to grab Bob the golett. At the second gym, Rock Smash was able to one shot Amaura and 2 shot Tyrunt.

Continuing on my journey, I fought a fake gym fight where Magnitude 2 shot lucario. Before hitting the third gym, I spent some time catching sableye. And by some time, I mean over one hour! He kept hiding from me, but I eventually added Demon to the team. At the third gym, Gust took out Machoke and Hawlucha, and Shedinja was immune to meinshao, so that was easy.

Nothing really changed on my travels to the fourth gym. Mainly leveling up. The fourth gym was similar to the third. Gust took out Jumpluff and weepinbell, and Shedinja was immune to gogoat.

Again, it was a straight shot to the fifth gym, with some adventures and leveling along the way. Magnitude one shot Magneton, X scissor 2 hit helio, but emolga was ANNOYING! In no time, I was up to five badges.

On the way to my sixth badge, I added the final member to my team, Ghost the haunter. At the sixth gym, earthquake 1 shot mawile, shadow claw 1 hit Mime, and iron head 2 hit sylveon. Again, not too bad of a battle.

After the sixth badge, I got around to trade evolving Ghost, leaving Pointy the only member left to evolve once I managed to get a Dusk Stone.

The seventh badge was cake. Obviously. Ghost vs. Psychic, need I say more?

Now one badge away, I took a detour into Terminus Cave to grab a Dusk Stone and evolve Pointy, completing the team. After some time, I was ready for the last badge. This fight was a little more challenging. Iron head took out avalug in 2 shots, double fly took care of abomasnow, but cyrogonal was annoying! It was a close call, but I earned my last badge.

The end was in sight! I journeyed through Victory Road and eventually reached my goal, the League!

Malva was pretty easy. Earthquake 1 shot pyroar, shadow ball took out chandelure, earthquake 1 hit torkoal, and power gem 1 hit talonflame.

Wikstrom wasn't bad either. Earthquake for probopass and scizor, shadow ball for aegislash, and Shedinja was immune to klefki.

For Drasna, dazzling gleam took care of noivern and druddigon, earthquake took out dragle, and ice beam took out altaria.

On Siebold, thunder bolt took out clawitzer and gyarados, shadow ball handled starmie, sacred sword dealt with barbaracle.

For the champion Diantha, thunder bolt took care of hawlucha, ice beam froze tyrantrum and took him out on the second shot, dazzling gleam 2 hit goodra, shadow ball 1 hit gourgeist, shadow claw 1 hit gardevoir before it could Mega, and Shedinja was immune to aurorus.

Some pics: https://imgur.com/a/4GHZKBV

Overall, this was a fun run. I never noticed how many pokemon have a dark type attack in this game though.

Final Team:

Ghost the Gengar lvl. 73
Balloon the Drifblim lvl. 71
Pointy the Aegislash lvl. 73
Demon the Sableye lvl. 73
Shedinja lvl. 74
Bob the Golurk lvl. 72

If it's alright, I'm going to be tackling one gym and then moving on to the next game, cycling through all the games multiple times for all the different gyms. This mean I'll finish most of the games aroun the same time and it'll prevent me from getting bored. I'll use this post as a masterpost for all the regions, organizing each game into its own spoiler tag and updating as I progress.

So far I've defeated 2 gyms in each game. I'm working on the third cycle of gyms now.

Fighting

Ultimate Monotype Challenge

KANTO
Spoiler:

Arin - 37

Breezed through the first part of the game. Brock was super easy, as expected.
-----
Second part was more fun than the first, especially after Mankey evolved into Primeape. He's becoming pretty powerful now.
-----
I imagine most of this region will be pretty easy. Primeape is a bit overleveled at this point so I didn't encounter any problems up until Lt. Surge. The first time I faced him, his Raichu managed to paralyze Primeape and pull off like 5 Double Teams, so I lost because I was never getting the chance to hit him. The second time I fought him, I 1HKO'd his Raichu like I thought I would the first time around.

JOHTO
Spoiler:

Spiral - 25 | Zeus - 17

There wasn't anything I could do for Falkner's gym, so I just used Rocky the Onix to defeat him as quickly as possible.
-----
Bugsy was a little difficult. U-Turn was taking out half my health on each hit so I had to grind outside Azalea for a bit and land a few critical hits before I managed to beat him.
-----
Managed to catch a Heracross, filling the second slot for my final team. I really like Heracross, and I don't think I'll be able to use him in any of the other regions, so I'm glad I get to use him here. Whitney was super annoying, as expected. Both of my Pokemon kept becoming infatuated and her Miltank kept spamming Milk Drink, so it took me two tries before I could beat her. Glad to be able to move on, though.

HOENN
Spoiler:

Cassie - 18 | Dex - 18 | Makuhita - 14

Pretty easy first part of the game. Shroomish did all of the work at Roxanne's gym. I really like Shroomish so I'm excited for this playthrough.
-----
Super short second part. All I really did was catch a Makuhita and immediately challenge Brawly. Easy.

SINNOH
Spoiler:

Orion - 24 | Khan - 21

Again, super easy first part of the game. Got even easier once I caught Machop. Excited to work towards the second badge!
-----
Finished with Gardenia. Machop is a little harder to use right now since he doesn't know any damaging moves that aren't Fighting type, but that'll change soon. Swept the gym with Monferno, so that's why he's a higher level right now.

UNOVA
Spoiler:

Lenny - 20 | Abraham - 16 | Jet - 17 | Kano - 16

The first part of this game was more difficult than the previous games, especially the actual gym leader battle, which took me two critical hits to get through. But Unova has some of my favorite Fighting Pokemon, so I'm excited for this.
-----
Getting to be much more fun now that I have 2/3 of my final team. Sawk and Throh are some of my favorite Pokemon in B/W, and I'm looking forward to adding Scrafy and Mienfoo as well. Of course, Lenora was a cakewalk.

KALOS
Spoiler:

Mercer - 28 | Lee - 26 | Rain - 18 | Chex - 20

Again, pretty easy first part. I've never EVER picked Chespin so it's neat to see his moves and stuff. Rollout completely decimated everything at Viola's gym.
-----
SUPER long and frankly annoying second part. I spent quite a while thinking about what my final team is going to be since there are so many options. I plan on dropping Machop once I get my sixth team member, but since the Exp. Share affects the whole party, I just decided to drag him along as well. Gym leader was super easy of course, being a Rock type leader.

ALOLA
Spoiler:

Tyson - 16 | Jin - 17 | José - 14 | Danny - 15

Took a lot longer to get here compared to the other games, but once I caught Makuhita and Crabrawler, things started moving quickly. The Brick Break TM you find in the first trial was particularly helpful. Time for cycle number 2!
-----
Since progression is a little weird here in Sun and Moon, I stopped part 2 after Hala's grand trial. It didn't take very long to get from Ilima's trial to Hala's, but I did manage to catch a Hawlucha, which will be a member of my final team. I might drop Mankey depending on whether or not I can find a replacement I like. Cycle #3 coming up!

Also I spent a large portion of today doing a Normal monotype run in Kanto, so I guess I'll sign up for that too.

Lauren - 53 | Chrom - 55 | Drogo - 53 | Olivia - 56 | Emily - 56 | Artemis - 52

Like I said, I've been doing this pretty much all day so i've made a LOT of progress already. Here are some milestone screenshots.
Spoiler:

Just finished this run. Forgot to screenshot the Elite Four victories because I was so focused. Pidgeot got the least amount of use, but everyone else was super useful. Pretty easy run overall due to the move variety.

Also, I'm not trying to overwhelm myself, but I've been really wanting to try a Grass Ultimate Challenge.

Ultimate Water Monotype: Blue, Part 1

Start a new game (on emulator on PC), name self Calen, name rival Gary
Choose Squirtle as my starter, tackle Gary’s Bulbasaur into submission in first rival battle
Grind in tall grass on Rt 1 for a bit
Head to Viridian City, get Oak’s Parcel, back to Pallet, back to Viridian, detour to Rt 22 for second rival battle with Squirtle around level 12-13. Gary’s Pidgey horribly nerfs my accuracy with Sand-Attacks before going down and then Bulbasaur gets off a Leech Seed and slowly drains my HP while I struggle to land attacks, so I have use two potions, but I eventually take him down.
Back to Pallet, collect 5 Pokeballs, start catching and boxing one of every Pokémon available on the early routes to fill my Dex so I can get stuff from Oak’s assistants later. (Keep a Spearow from Rt 22 to trade for Farfetch’d to be my Cut+Fly slave and a Pikachu from Viridian Forest to be my Flash slave.)
Grind a little more on Rt 1, thinking it would be nice to have Bite before hitting Viridian Forest. Squirtle hits level 16 and evolves into Wartortle, realize I may have overdone it on the level grinding a bit. (Check movesets online, Squirtle line doesn’t get Bite until level 22/24, why was I thinking it was 13 or 14? Never mind that, then.)
Blast through Viridian Forest, Wartortle’s Water Gun OHKOs everything.
Pewter Gym is laughably easy.
Blast through Rt 3, get to Mt. Moon Pokémon Center and immediately buy the Magikarp from the sketchy salesman. Finally a second team member!
Time for more grinding. Get Magikarp to level 12 using the switch-out method in the grass on Rt 3, in the process Wartortle reaches level 24 and learns Bite, sounds like a good time to take on Mt. Moon.
Keep Wartortle up for the wild encounters in Mt. Moon because Zubats are a menace, but switch-train Magikarp on a few of the NPCs.
Reach Cerulean City, heal up, then backtrack to the grass on Rt 4 for another Magikarp training session. Switch-train until Magikarp reaches level 15 and learns Tackle. Head to Rt 24 for the next rival battle, let Magikarp Tackle Gary’s Abra since it can’t fight back, while Wartortle handles the rest of the team with ease. Go through the rest of the trainers on Rts 24 and 25, letting Magikarp Tackle a few bugs and switch-training on everyone else. Magikarp is most of the way to level 19 by the time I reach Bill and pick up the SS Ticket. Wartortle is sufficiently overleveled not to be bothered by switching in on Bellsprouts, so the last level and a half of Magikarp training is done in the grass on Rt 24.
Magikarp reaches level 20, evolves into Gyarados, learns Bite. Immediately teach it Water Gun from the TM from Mt. Moon so it actually has a water-type attack.
Take my level 20 Gyarados straight to Cerulean Gym, Gyarados’s Bite tears through the gym while the gym trainers and Misty fail to put up any appreciable fight.
Beat up the Rocket at the burglarized house, collect Dig TM, to Vermillion City. Gyarados solos Rts 5 and 6 because Wartortle is over level 30 by now, so it's Gyarados’s turn to get all the XP (and besides, wrecking everything with a Gyarados is just fun). Gyarados solos the SS Anne, with the exception of one Pikachu, and solos the rival battle too.
Trade Spearow for Dux the Farfetch’d, teach Dux to Cut, access Vermillion Gym. Use Dig HM on Wartortle.
Overpowered Gyarados outspeeds OHKOs all the Voltorbs with Bite, because Gen 1 Voltorbs don’t actually know any Electric attacks. Overleveled Wartortle outspeeds and OHKOs everything else in the gym with Dig. (Surge uses an X Speed each on Pikachu and Raichu, allowing them to outspeed Wartortle on the second turn and proc attacks while it was still protected underground, lol).
Clear out Rt 11, Wartortle uses Dig on Electric and Poison types and Gyarados handles everything else. Gyarados glides through Diglett’s Cave. Collect Flash HM from Oak’s assistant, teach Pikachu to Flash. Return through Diglett’s Cave, collect Itemfinder from Oak’s assistant, return north to Cerulean City, get bike.
Now we’re ready to leave for Rt 9, time to call it a night, with Gyarados at level 30 and Wartortle at level 35.

Water Monotype Challenge - Second Update
Platinum | Peaches

It's been a while so time for an update!

So it's honestly been a while since part of my journey that I can't remember specifics but after getting to Floaroma Town we moved on and before taking on Team Plasma we went and caught one of our two team members Pomeg the Buizel! After taking down Mars and her Purugly we went and caught Pecha the Shellos! We then moved on and continued our journey and went to go and face the second gym leader, Gardenia! Well ... after a bunch of grinding.

Gardenia, as expected, was a pain in the butt and I had to grind. A lot. During this grinding Figy evolved into Bibarel. Figy out to where he was able to take down the majority of her Pokemon using Hyper Fang and between him and Coba we were finally able to defeat her after a few tries.

The journey between the second and third gym battles was a lot easier. We went out to the Wayward Cave for some much needed training for our other two members of our team and, partially thanks to getting lost in there for a while, Pomeg evolved into Floatzel and when everyone's level up and equal we moved onto facing off again Fantina!

Unlike Gardenia she was muuuch easier. Pomeg basically took down the majority of her Pokemon with Crunch and Coba took down her Haunter since Pomeg got confused during the battle. But that said, third gym down and now we're on to take down our fourth gym! Just around the time before we finished for the night our lovely Pecha evolved into a Gastrodon!

Ultimate Water Monotype: Blue, Part 2

Head down Rt 9 and through the Rock Tunnel, stop only briefly in Lavender Town before heading through Rts 8 and 7 to Celadon City. Wartortle hits level 36 and evolves into Blastoise somewhere in here. I’ve given Gyarados the Thunderbolt TM, so I’m relying more on Gyarados against flying and the occasional water type and favoring Blastoise with Dig against electric and poison, but at this point they can both easily handle pretty much anything we come across, so I’m mostly alternating who’s leading to keep them evenly leveled.

Get to Celadon City, stop in at the department store for a water stone and the Ice Beam and Tri Attack TMs, and of course a drink for the guards. Clear out Team Rocket at the Game Corner hideout, Giovanni goes down in an instant, acquire Silph Scope.

Open the gate to Saffron City, stop in just long enough to pick up the Psychic TM, and head on back to Lavender Town. Blastoise very nearly solos Pokémon Tower - being limited by Dig’s 10PP as my only super-effective move against ghosts makes things a little annoying, given their tendency to inflict confusion and paralysis if I don’t manage to OHKO, but it’s not particularly a difficult dungeon. Calm the Marowak’s spirit and rescue Mr. Fuji.

With the Pokeflute in hand, the way south is now open. Time for a ridiculous detour, because I want my next team member already. Head down Rt 12, get Snorlax out of the way, acquire Super Rod, continue down Rts 13-15, avoiding as many trainers as possible because I’d prefer to save the XP for later. Get to Fuschia City, go fishing on Rt 19’s beach and catch myself a level 15 Staryu. Immediately teach it Bubblebeam, Tri Attack, and Psychic. Switch train it on the remaining trainers and while collecting items and Pokédex entries on Rts 15-12 as I head back up the coast, using my water stone to evolve it to Starmie as soon as it learns Water Gun at level 17, and have it up to about level 22 by the time we get back to Lavender Town. Take Starmie to Diglett’s Cave for some intensive training, because it’s pretty much the best place in Kanto for grinding with water types. Snipe Digletts until Starmie is over level 30, then it’s finally time to get back to the main journey.

Go to Celadon City, take on the grass gym. Blastoise’s Ice Beam takes the one gym trainer’s Exeggcute and Erika’s Tangela, Starmie takes down everything else. Go to Saffron City, Starmie solos the fighting dojo, and grows from level 32 to 35 between the two gyms. Time to clear out Silph Co. Starmie mostly carries the team, only deferring to Blastoise for electric types and Gyarados for normal types and bats. Get to the rival battle, Gyarados’s Thunderbolt takes down Pidgeot and Gyarados, while Starmie takes Growlithe with Bubblebeam, Alakazam with Tri Attack, and Venusaur with Psychic. Get to Giovanni, Gyarados takes Kangaskhan and Starmie takes everything else. With all the XP Starmie’s been raking in, it’s nearly caught up with the rest of the team in levels, at 45 to Blastoise and Gyarados’s 47.

With Team Rocket defeated, Silph Co’s president gives me the Master Ball. More importantly, a grateful employee gives me a Lapras on the way out, so now I have my last team member. Lapras is only level 15, so it’s going to take a whole bunch of grinding to get it close to the rest of the team, so it’s time for another excursion to Diglett’s Cave. Grind until Lapras is above level 38 and has Ice Beam, then its time to return to Saffron and head south. (Get Fly on Rt 16, teach Dux fly.)

The large number of poison types on the cycling road means Starmie carries again, but I give Lapras as many chances to battle as I can, and it takes the flying types on Rt 18. Arrive in Fuschia City, challenge Fuschia Gym. Lapras takes a gym trainer’s two Sandslash, Starmie solos everything else. Go to the Safari Zone, get Surf HM, replace Water Gun with Surf on my entire team. Collect the Gold Teeth (and the rest of the useful items), give them the the Warden to get the Strength TM, teach Gyarados Strength.

Ready to head down the water routes, it’s time to call it a night. Team is currently Blastoise at level 47, Gyarados at level 48, Starmie at level 49, and Lapras at level 43, plus the two HM slaves.

Ultimate Water Monotype: Blue, Part 3

Head down Rts 19 and 20 to the Seafoam Islands. I’ve been a little worried about this part, because 18 PP of Thunderbolt is my only super-effective move for most water types and Ethers and PP Ups are so limited. Turns out I needn’t have worried, as most of the trainers have unevolved Pokémon that go down in one hit to neutral damage attacks. Starmie and Gyarados between them take on everything on the water routes, and Gyarados solos the Seafoam Islands. I wasn’t planning on catching any of the legendaries this playthrough, but after two Thunderbolts, Articuno paralyzed with just a tiny sliver of its HP bar, and at that point it seems like a waste not to; I get it on about the 4th Ultra Ball, with Gyarados still above half health.

One more short water route and we arrive on Cinnabar Island. Blastoise very nearly solos Pokémon Mansion, just leaving a handful of fire types to Lapras. Lapras solos the gym, and takes point on Rt 21 as we return to Pallet Town.

Fly to Cerulean City and surf to the Power Plant. Blastoise solos the Power Plant, then Lapras takes down Zapdos in two Ice Beams. (After not being used much for a while, Blastoise had ended up my lowest level Pokémon save Lapras, but after Pokémon Mansion and the Power Plant, it jumped to being my highest.)

Fly back to Viridian City, Lapras solos the gym, and finally catches up with the rest of the team in terms of level. Head down Rt 22 for the rival battle. Lapras takes Pidgeot with Ice Beam and Rhyhorn with Surf, Gyarados takes Gyarados with Thunderbolt, Lapras returns to Surf down Growlithe, and Starmie’s Tri Attack takes Alakazam. A Psychic from Starmie doesn’t quite OHKO Venusaur, and a crit Razor Leaf takes it out, so Lapras comes back to avenge it with Ice Beam.

After healing up back in Viridian City, it’s time for Victory Road. (I completely forget to collect any of the powerful healing items I’ve been saving in the computer for late game, and spend most of the cave desperately wishing I had some Elixirs.) My team is nicely grouped at levels 53-55. Starmie pretty much carries the team through Victory Road, because Starmie is the best caver.

Elite Four: Gyarados Thunderbolts through Lorelei's water dual-types, while Starmie’s Tri Attack takes Jynx. Starmie Surfs down Bruno’s Onixes and Psychics the fighters, then proceeds to rip through the entirety of Agatha’s team with Psychic as well. Gyarados takes Lance’s Gyarados with a Thunderbolt, then Lapras takes all the dragons with Ice Beam and Aerodactyl with Surf. In the Championship battle with Gary, Lapras takes down Pidgeot with Ice Beam and Rhydon with Surf. Thunderbolt means my Gyarados continues to be better than Gary’s Gyarados. Lapras comes back to Surf down Arcanine. Starmie takes Alakazam with Tri Attack once more, then uses Psychic on Venusaur. Once again, Psychic doesn’t quite OHKO, but Venusaur tries to use it and Starmie takes it down with a second Psychic while its still gathering sunlight. Championship title acquired!

Championship Team: L54 Lapras, L57 Starmie, L53 Blastoise, and L55 Gyarados, plus L5 Pikachu and L3 Dux the Farfetch’d as HM as HM slaves.

Grass

Ultimate Monotype Challenge

KANTO
Spoiler:
Grass Monotype Challenge
LeafGreen | Elixir

Ash's formatting was just so beautiful that I had to steal it. Sorry Ash.

I've been wanting to do a Grass Monotype for a very long time, but I never had the time. I'm on break now so I can finally attempt this! Hopefully it won't be too difficult, but I'm aware that Grass is a painful type to play Gen 2 with. I'm sure Kanto will be much easier.

I started with a female Bulbasaur that I named Clover. Shortly after delivering Oak's Parcel, I hacked in a level 3 Oddish, since I won't be able to otherwise get one in LeafGreen and the rules say I'm allowed to. I named this Oddish "Lily".

Easily defeated Brock, as expected. 1HKO'd both of his Pokemon with Lily's Absorb. Getting through the next Route was harder than anything in the gym, only because of all the Pidgeys and Bug types. Clover evolved into Ivysaur while making our way through this route.

In Mt. Moon, I picked up the Bullet Seed TM and taught it to Lily. Shortly afterwards, I caught a female Paras, which I named Karyn. I'm currently progressing through Mt. Moon now.

Clover (Ivysaur) ♀
Quiet | Overgrow | Level 17
Tackle, Sleep Powder, Leech Seed, Vine Whip

Lily (Oddish) ♀
Sassy | Chlorophyll | Level 18
Absorb, Bullet Seed, Poisonpowder, Stun Spore

Karyn (Paras) ♀
Careful | Effect Spore| Level 11
Scratch, Stun Spore, Thief

oh wow! Guess I dide UM and M correctly then! Both were ghost monos!

Forum User Name: Juliorain
Game(s): UM + M
Pokémon Type: Ghost
Single/Ultimate/Free Mode?: Single

M I don't really count since I bred my team beforehand, however in UM:

Gengar, Mimikyu, Decidueye, Sableye (this thing swept Acerola...gotta love prankster calm mind sweepage), Jellicent, and Palossand/Alolan Marowak

I got them one at a time which meant only using Rowlet until I could catch gastly and misdreavus. I couldn't actually defeat that damn alolan trashcate, so I had to cheat and use that free hawlucha...because it was literally immune to everything gastly had and oneshot rowlet lol

Akala was pretty boring...I cheated on lana's trial by sneaking a cotonnee, but it died easily. Rowlet/dartrix trucked. Then oh god... Kiawe.... had to spend so long getting that cubone (and killed so many just to get that damn thicc club which never appeared on the wild mons).... which I would up replacing with jellicent later on. Had to get my Haunter to use thief on Kiawe's alolawak to get the thiccccccc club. Salazzle was a breeze because bby cubone could bonemerang the salazzle. I think I managed to get cubone to evolve before Mallow, which wasn't too bad. Oh god that black hole eclipse trainer on top of mount hokulani. At least I managed to find a mimikyu and sableye by Acerola's trial. I convienently had a beheyeem from gen 5 so I could capture a sableye, teach it imprison and deduce which SOS Sableye was a prankster! It was also then I put jellicent on the team (took forever to fish out a modest one). And then no problems from then on out. The alolan marowak was a beast fighting sophocles (since it had lightning rod, but it was palossand that really shown.) Nanu was easily toppled by my mimi-Q and gengar knowing dazzling gleam looool. I wound up using Twinkle Tackle and Bloom Doom the most of any of the z moves. Barely, if ever, used any other! I found it hilarious gengar doing a twinkle tackle dazzling gleam! The ultra necrozma battle was really fun! I totally forgot about neuroforce and thus disposed of my mimikyu quickly, but after careful switching, managed to send mimikyu back out after reviving it. (I opted for shadow claw like a complete durp because I didn't realize it was a dragon!) Still managed to kill it somehow. (Ghost > Psy always)

Faba was a complete joke. His Bruxish was a little scary, but eh. Guzma's golispod became so annoying when sable's wow missed, letting it succumb to a liquidation, gdi.... so bitter. Lusamine was meh. Gladion's final fight was a pushover...I think I memed a little and drain punched his weavile... lol

By e4, I basically used Gengar as a suicide taunt lead letting sableye set up on acerola via calm mind. Mimikyu got in its swords dances and sable got its willows against Hala. Hala's Hariyama was a huge roadblock; but gengar's z-dazzle overcame that looool. Moylane and fell victim to a Decidueye/Palossand duo. Believe it or not but I struggled the most with burbo chick. Can mandibuzz be cut from the freaking planet!? I had to run willowwisp, taunt, tbolt, and *sludge bomb* on my gengar and had to revive it twice. Burb lady's skarmory and crobat duo treshed my mimikyu so theres that. Hau chose Primarina, so I didn't have to fight trashroar like I had to in Moon, which was a sigh of relief.

As for the post game, I kept the same mono, and took them to the rainbow rocket. Somehow Faba's bruxish came back for a vengance, nearly sweeping my entire team (how that happened don't ask me). Every admin was a pushover apart from Lysandre, which his megados...plsno molbreakered through mimi-qs disguise, and GOT A FLINCH on waterfall... this was after killing the infernal bacon burbo too, so my team was weakened at that time. Decidueye then 6-0'd Giovanni... *shrug* I think jellicent came in at one point for a memey hpump.

Sorry, I have no screens! When sword comes out, I'll do a proper mono-ghost run of Sword!

Been playing through White, but I’m getting a little bogged down, so I’m gonna take a break from that for a bit to load up SoulSilver and head to Johto for the next leg of my Ultimate Water Monotype.

Session 1:

Spoiler:
Start new game. Name self Calen, as usual. Meet Prof Elm, get my starter, claim Totodile and name him Fang.

Head to the first patch of tall grass on Rt 29 and fight wild Pokémon until Fang reaches level 10, then continue on down the route, through Cherrygrove City, and up Rt 30 to Mr. Pokémon’s house. Obtain the Mysterious Egg and the Pokédex and return home, having my first run-in with my rival on the way back. Fang at level 12 effortlessly demolishes his level 5 Chikorita; whose Pokémon are weak now?

Name my rival Percy when questioned about him back at Elm’s. Get Pokéballs from Ethan, and catch a Hoothoot for future Fly use as I cross Rt 29 again, but box it as soon as I stop off in Cherrygrove City.

Head up the other side of Rt 30 and onto Rt 31. Fang is picking up levels quickly now there are trainers to battle, and has learned Bite by the time we reach Violet City.

Despite the type advantage, low-level Bellsprouts are no match for Fang’s attack power; we Scratch and Bite our way through Sprout Tower, one-shotting everything in our path. (Elder Li’s level 10 Hoothoot is the only Pokémon not to get OHKO’d, and it flinches from Bite, so even that doesn’t get an attack in.) Get Flash TM, am reminded that Bellsprout can learn Flash, run back to Rt 31 to pick up and box a Bellsprout for later use with Flash and Cut.

Spamming Bite makes quick work of the gym trainers in Violet Gym as well. Falkner is a little tougher; his Pidgey manages to get a single Sand-Attack in before going down, nerfing Fang’s accuracy just enough to make the battle with Pidgeotto really drag on. I have to use three potions over the course of the battle, and survive the turn on which Pidgeotto finally goes down with two HP remaining. The EXP from that battle bumps Fang up to level 18 and he evolves into Croconaw; I suspect the gym would have been a lot easier if I’d had that one more level beforehand, but I just didn’t want to grind any more.

Pick up the Rock Smash HM, teach it to Fang, and head out to Rt 32. The day cycle has turned over to morning by now, and the next member of my party can only be found here at night, so it’s time to wrap up this session.

Session 2:

Spoiler:
Run around in the tall grass on Rt 32 looking for a Wooper to recruit; Fang picks up a level and a half by the time I find one I like enough to keep (i.e. female with water absorb and a nature that isn’t awful). My new level 6 Wooper gets named Axolittle. Train Axolittle in that first patch of tall grass on the route until she reaches level 10. Use Axolittle almost exclusively the rest of the way down Rt 32 and through Union Cave; by the time we reach Azalea Town, she’s up to level 18, but Fang’s only grown to level 20.

Axolittle is up to taking out the Rocket grunts at Slowpoke Well, and Fang handles the commander. Go on to Azalea Gym, where Fang reaches level 21 and learns Ice Fang while fighting the second gym trainers just in time to put it to good use on further gym trainers’ Paras and Ledyba and Bugsy’s Scyther. Send in Axolittle, thinking Bugsy is going to lead with Metapod, and instead immediately get slammed by a crit U-Turn from Scyther that drops Axolittle into the red. But after using a super potion, Axolittle handles Metapod and Kakuna no problem and Fang takes down Scyther.

Stop by the Pokécenter to heal and then it’s time for the next rival battle. Fang’s Bite makes quick work of Gastly. His Ice Fang misses on the first turn against Bayleef, but two more knock it out without sustaining any significant damage. Send in Axolittle against Zubat, who is a menace mostly because the RNG gods decide they hate me: get confused by Supersonic, and Axolittle proceeds to hurt herself in confusion like three times in a row and then flinch from Bite like three times in a row. But she finally snaps out of confusion a turn after I heal her with another super potion, and takes it out without too much more trouble.

At this point Axolittle is less than 300 EXP points shy of level 20, so I briefly head back to Union Cave to grind for that last little bit, because I know she won’t be much use in Ilex Forest and I don’t want her falling behind too badly. Axolittle reaches level 20 and evolves into Quagsire. Looks like a good place to end this session.

The Adventure of Pest, the bug catcher!
He caught two weedle and they evolved into Beedrill. Faulkner’s birb Pokemon fainted to poison, but not before ZZZt fell to birb moves.
Pokémon:
BZZd the Beedrill. Very adamant. Drinks too much honey
ZZZt the Beedrill. A Jolly insect. Doesn’t like smokers

Ultimate Water Monotype: Johto, Part 2

Session 3:

Spoiler:
Ilex Forest is a breeze with Fang. Round up the Farfetch’d and get Cut (unbox Bellsprout to be my Cut slave), find the move tutor and teach Axolittle to Headbutt, so she finally has a decent Physical move, show the Kimono Girl the way out, and head on to Rt 34, where Axolittle gets to come back out and take on most of the trainers.

Arrive in Goldenrod City. Acquire bike and Radio Card, explore the Department Store a bit, and fight some trainers in the tunnel, then head to the game corner and settle in to cheat at Voltorb Flip until I have enough coins for the Ice Beam and Thunderbolt TMs.

Hit up Goldenrod Gym. Fang’s Rock Smash pulverizes the gym trainers and Whitney’s Clefairy. Against Miltank, Axolittle is up first to soften it up, since she resists Rollout and can’t be infatuated. Axolittle spams Mud Bomb, and gets Miltank into the red once and back down into the yellow before getting knocked out, and more importantly has dropped its accuracy to -2. Whitney heals Miltank a second time, Attract misses, and Fang takes it down with a few more Rock Smashes. Easiest gym battle so far, honestly.

Acquire the SquirtBottle and head up Rt 35, where Axolittle leads. Find the Dig TM in the National Park, and immediately teach it to Axolittle. (Why does it take so long and a TM for Quagsire to get a physical ground STAB? Why does Quagsire’s movepool suck so badly this generation?) Axolittle and Fang divide up the trainers in the National Park and on Rt 36 pretty evenly. The odd tree does not like my SquirtBottle or my Axolittle. With the junction clear, we make a quick detour back through Violet City to deliver a mail Spearow and get an Everstone from the Professor, then return and head up Rt 37 to Ecruteak Town.

Meet Bill. Acquire the Dowsing MCHN, which is a nice quality of life improvement. Axolittle wastes the Rocket Grunt in the dance theater, and we pick up the Surf HM. Explore the Burned Tower and meet up with our rival again: Fang’s Bite OHKOs Gastly and Ice Fang does the same for Zubat, one Mud Shot from Axolittle takes Magnemite, then Fang comes back to take out Bayleef in two Ice Fangs. Set the legendary beasts running, then it’s on to the gym.

With beautiful timing, Fang reaches level 30, upgrades Bite to Crunch, and evolves into Feraligatr while facing the first gym trainer. After that the gym is almost a joke; Fang one-shots everything with Crunch, and outspeeds everything but Morty’s Gengar (who wastes the turn on Mean Look) and one Haunter’s Sucker Punch.

Head on down Rts 38 and 39, letting Axolittle lead as much as possible because Fang picked up an additional three levels in the gym and poor Axolittle is like five levels behind now. Reach Olivine City, obtain the Good Rod, and immediately head back out because now I can finally get the rest of my team.

First stop: trek back to New Bark Town and go fishing for a Chinchou. I’m dreading that 3% encounter rate, but apparently the RNG gods are with me today, because on literally my very first cast, I reel in a female Chinchou with Volt Absorb and a +SpA nature. I name her Lumi, and immediately teach her Surf and Thunderbolt.

Next stop: Union Cave. Convince the game it’s Friday, then take the straightest path I can down to the deepest level, and Surf across the pond to meet a Lapras. Lapras has Water Absorb, and a Jolly nature, which is less than ideal since I need her to be a special attacker, but I’m not in the mood for soft resetting so I’ll live with it. Name her Nessie and teach her Surf.

Use Dig to escape the cave, and return to Olivine City. Both Lumi and Nessie are going to need significant training before they’re ready for prime time, but for now I’m calling it a night.

Current Team:
Fang - Feraligatr (m) - lvl 33
Axolittle - Quagsire (f) - lvl 30
Lumi - Chinchou (f) - lvl 21
Nessie - Lapras (f) - lvl 20

Session 4:

Spoiler:
Back in Olivine City, it’s time to climb the lighthouse. Lumi is equally to slightly underleveled for most of the Pokémon here, but she’s got a type advantage on everything except some Machop on the top floor, so I decide to throw her in the deep end and see how she handles it. She does beautifully, only needing to be healed between trainers once or twice, and grows from level 21 to 24 or 25 by the time we reach Jasmine.

Head down the water routes in search of Cianwood’s pharmacy. Lumi continues to handle beautifully and soak up the EXP, reaching level 27 and evolving into Lanturn not long after crossing from Rt 40 to Rt 41, and is up to level 31 by the time we finish exploring Rt 41.

Obtain the SecretPotion from the Pharmacy in Cianwood, have a brief run in with Suicune and battle Eusine (Fang takes Drowzee and Haunter with Crunch, Axolittle’s Mud Shot makes quick work of Electrode), then it’s time for the gym.

I don’t have anything with a type advantage here, so I leave it to Axolittle as my best tank to brute force her way through the gym trainers and Chuck’s Primeape, healing occasionally between trainers. Lumi comes out to take on Poliwrath; her Thunderbolt isn’t quite strong enough to one-shot, and she gets hit with Hypnosis, then takes a Focus Punch while I use an Awakening, but tanks it with HP in the yellow. Continuing to spam Thunderbolt gets us the win with no further damage taken.

Get the Fly HM, and unbox Hoothoot to teach Fly, then surf back to Olivine City to challenge the gym there. Magnemite doesn’t like ground and Steelix doesn’t like water, while Axolittle has resistance or immunity to everything they’ve got, so this is an easy win.

Fly back to Ecruteak in preparation to head east, and end the session there.

Current Team:
Fang - Feraligatr (m) - lvl 33

Quick Question to all the monotypers out there: In Pokemon Emerald there are three Ice types, Spheal, Snorunt and Regice. Spheal and Snorunt are found just before the 7th gym and we all know Regice is a pain to get, the rules states that if any of your pokemon are unobtainable before the second gym, you can hack them in. Now my question is whether it'd be ok for me to Hack in both Spheal and Snorunt for my team, otherwise I'd be basically Soloing the game with either until the 7th gym and getting Regice is too much of a pain so I won't be including it in the team.

Ultimate Water Monotype: Johto, Part Three

Session 5:

Spoiler:
Take a quick trip down Rt 42, acquire the Strength HM, and arrive in Mahogany Town, bypassing Mt. Mortar for now, then head down Rt 43 to the Lake of Rage, letting Nessie lead as much as possible; it’s time to put some serious effort into getting her trained up to match the rest of the party.

Surf out into the Lake of Rage and fight the Red Gyarados; one Spark and two Bubblebeams from Lumi knock him into the red, but it still takes forever and Lumi faints before I catch him because I’ve decided to be stubborn about catching my whole team in regular Pokéballs. Name him Rua (Gaelic for red) and add him to my party, but unfortunately the best of Gyarados’s moveset in this generation almost completely duplicates Feraligatr’s, so he’s destined to be mostly an HM slave. Teach Rua Strength.

Trade the Red Scale to Mr. Pokémon for the Exp Share, which I give Nessie to hold, and let her lead as much as possible while I make a few side trips. Now that I have a Strength user, enter Mt. Mortar and explore as much of the cave system as I can access without Waterfall or Rock Climb. Return to the Lake of Rage to fight all the trainers and collect all the items that are accessible while the water is high. Fly to Cianwood City and enter the now-open Cliff Edge Gate to explore Rts 47-48. Nessie is only about two levels shy of the rest of the party by the time we reach the Safari Zone, so we do a bit of grinding in the grass on Rt 48 to finish training her up, and then I’m able to wean her off the EXP share.

Fly back to the Lake of Rage once more and finally talk to Lance, then return to Mahogany Town to bust the Rocket Hideout. Fang and Axolittle between them do most of the work here, nothing to write home about. Return to the Lake of Rage and for the last trainer and items that are only accessible when the water is low, then it’s time to challenge the Mahogany Gym.

Mahogany is an easy gym for my team. Fang’s Crunch takes down a Jynx and Water Gun melts two Swinub, then Lumi’s electric attacks take all the water/ice dual types, including Pryce’s Seel and Dewgong. Pryce’s Piloswine goes down to a Surf from Nessie.

The Professor calls to say there’s a situation at the Radio Tower, so off to Goldenrod we fly. Fang deals with the rats and Nessie is on bat patrol, but Axolittle is definitely MVP here. Levitate means I have nothing super-effective against the Koffing line, but they’re fragile enough that Axolittle’s Surf usually one-shots. Petrel’s Weezing outspeeds Axolittle, manages to poison her with Sludge, and takes two hits to go down, but she’s bulky enough to take down the rest of his team before being healed.

I’m not expecting my rival in the warehouse, which means Axolittle is still in the lead; Golbat hits Lumi with a Confuse Ray on the switch-in, and she gets pretty beat up by confusion and Bite before she finally lands a Thunderbolt to take it down. The rest of his team is easy, though, with Magnemite falling to Axolittle’s Dig, Haunter to Fang’s Crunch, Sneasel to Fang’s Rock Smash, and Meganium to Nessie’s Ice Beam. Finish taking out Team Rocket in the warehouse and the locked side of the radio tower, with Axolittle continuing to do the bulk of the work. The three Executives require more of a team effort, but aren’t difficult enough to really be worth mentioning. By the time we beat Archer and receive the Silver Wing from the Director, Axolittle is the highest leveled member of my team.

Take a quick trip down Rt 44, where everyone gets a match or two in. I’m getting pretty tired, so we halt for the night before entering the Ice Path.

Session 6:

Spoiler:
Fang handles everything on the Ice Path, and we make it through to Blackthorn City with little trouble. Get the Waterfall HM along the way and immediately teach it to Fang, finally giving him a better water move than Water Gun. Take Axolittle to the move deleter to forget Surf so she can learn Waterfall instead, which is better with her higher physical attack. (The next time Fang levels up, realize that despite thinking of him as primary a physical attacker, his special attack is only two points lower, so I take him get Waterfall replaced with Surf.)

Go into Blackthorn Gym with my team a few levels short of Claire’s ace; we’re hitting the point in the region’s EXP curve where it’s getting hard to keep up. The gym trainers are easy; Nessie’s Ice Beam takes everything in the Dratini line and Lumi’s Thunderbolt handles the Horsea line. Claire’s Gyarados and Dragonairs aren’t much harder, and handled in the same manner, though one of the Dragonairs is able to get a Thunder Wave off and paralyze Nessie, and Ice Beam doesn’t quite one-shot, leading to a few turns of spamming Ice Beam while she uses healing items. I got the Dragon Claw TM from the Goldenrod Lottery and taught it to Fang in place of Ice Fang specifically for dealing with Kingdra; even with that, it takes three hits to go down, but go down it does (and I’m impressed with Fang’s ability to tank a Hyper Beam).

Claire throws her little hissy fit, so we head to the Dragon’s Den, which is a breeze for Nessie and Lumi after the gym. Pass the Elder’s test and get the gym badge, then it’s time to head south. Fang takes everything on Rts 45 and 46, and Lumi handles the Dark Cave (though she gets knocked out once by a wild Wobuffet’s Destiny Bond because her Signal Beam isn’t quite enough to one-shot). Catch a Skarmory while we’re on Rt 45 to be my new HM slave, so I can now carry Cut, Flash, and Fly at the same time.

Stop in at Elm’s Lab when we arrive back in New Bark Town, and he directs me to the Ecruteak Dance Theater. Battle the Kimono Girls: Fang easily takes Umbreon with a few Rock Smashes and Espeon with a single Crunch; Axolittle tanks a Fire Blast on the switch-in against Flareon, then gets burned by Will-o-Wisp; the attack reduction means she can’t one-shot, and she takes another Fire Blast before taking it down. I don’t think Axolittle is in good enough shape to handle Jolteon, so I leave Fang in; he gets knocked out, but Lumi’s Surf finishes the job. Lumi’s Thunderbolt takes Vaporeon easily.

Off to the Whirl Islands, where Lumi takes on all comers as we explore the caves. Find Lugia in the Waterfall Basin, and decide I have no particular reason to catch it and would rather have the EXP, so Nessie takes it down in three Ice Beams. (Feel bad for disappointing the Kimono Girls. Maybe I’ll come back and catch it once I’m Champion.)

Head back to Mt. Mortar to explore the sections that require Waterfall to access. Lumi handles everything here too, though the Machokes in the Upper Cave manage to be a serious threat. Find the Aerial Ace TM, teach it to Fang in place of Dragon Claw, and almost immediately use it to defeat the Karate King. Sidequests now completed, we fly back to New Bark Town to strike out for the League.

I switch leads around a lot on Rts 27 -26, trying to distribute the experience as much as possible. Heal at the house, pass through the Victory Road Gate, and Nessie very nearly solos Victory Road. I’m prepared for my rival’s ambush this time. Fang OHKOs Sneasel with Rock Smash, Nessie two-shots Meganium with Ice Beam, and the Reflect that Meganium got up in between isn’t enough to stop Axolittle’s Earthquake from one-shotting Magneton. Fang’s Crunch isn’t enough to one-shot Haunter through Reflect, though, and it gets a Confuse Ray off. Fang hits itself in confusion the next turn, but successfully lands another Crunch to take out Haunter after that. The Reflect and confusion wear off, Kadabra Disables Fang’s Crunch before he can use it, so we have to brute force it with Surf and Aerial Ace. Kadabra sets up another Reflect before going down, but that doesn’t matter because all that’s left is for Lumi to take Golbat with Thunderbolt, an easy OHKO. At this point Axolittle is still at level 44, while my other three fighters are all level 46, so I take her to do a little grinding just inside Victory Road to get everyone on even footing, and then it’s time to take on the Elite Four.

Elite Four gets its own write up:

Spoiler:
I’m pretty sure going in that this is gonna be a rough one; this is a bad Elite Four to not have Psychic or Fire coverage for, and I’m on the underleveled side too.

Will isn’t too bad. Lumi’s Thunderbolt one-shots his first Xatu. Fang Crunches Jynx for another OHKO. Lumi comes back out to take on Slowbro, who takes three Thunderbolts to go down, since Will uses a Full Restore when the first one doesn’t finish it. Nessie drops Exeggutor into the yellow with an Ice Beam, dodges a Hypnosis, and her second Ice Beam finishes the job. The second Xatu outspeeds Lumi and hits her with Confuse Ray before she can get a Thunderbolt off; she hurts herself in confusion and tanks a Psychic before correctly aiming a second Thunderbolt.

Koga I’m in a very bad position to deal with. Fang two-shots Ariados with Aerial Ace. Axolittle repeatedly uses Dig against Forretress, trying to bait an Explosion, but instead it just spams Protect and Swift and sets up two layers of Toxic Spikes. After three or four hits I get it into the red, Koga uses a Full Restore, and I give up, take a turn to heal, and switch to just doing as much damage as possible with Earthquake, and eventually wear it down. With Toxic Spikes on the field, I opt to dig in and run with Axolittle for as long as possible. Muk is bulky enough not to go down to a single Earthquake, and spams Minimize while its black sludge slowly heals it, so it takes a little while to go down too. Axolittle has to tank a few Psychics against Venomoth, but is able to wear it down without too much trouble. She won’t be able to do much against Crobat, though, so I switch in Nessie and let her take the poisoning (unfortunately, Axolittle is the only one I thought to equip with a Pecha Berry). Her first Ice Beam takes its HP into the yellow, but Crobat spams Double Team and getting a second hit in proves nearly impossible. I spend a turn to use a Full Restore when the poison damage knocks Nessie’s health into the red, and after that Crobat stops using additional Double Teams and starts whittling down Nessie’s HP with Quick Attack and Wing Attack while she continues lobbing Ice Beams. Finally, when we’re about to run out of PP, the 10th Ice Beam lands for the KO.

Fang starts out strong against Bruno, taking out Hitmontop with a single Aerial Ace and Hitmonchan with two (though not before the latter does some damage with Thunder Punch) only to be knocked out by Hitmonlee’s Hi Jump Kick. I send in Rua to buy a turn for me to Max Revive Fang, and Hitmonlee uses Swagger. Rua gets lucky on not hurting himself before the confusion wears off and, despite not having seen battle since I caught him at level 30, takes a good chunk out of Hitmonlee with Strength, who Bruno recalls in favor of Onix, and gets Onix into the yellow with Strength and Whirlpool before finally going down. (There’s something to be said for having a Gyarados as your HM slave.) Fang quickly finishes Onix with Surf. Machamp takes a bunch of Aerial Aces to go down, and manages to KO Fang again between Cross Chop and Revenge, so I have to send Skarmory out and use another Max Revive. Once that behemoth is taken down, a weakened Hitmonlee isn’t too hard to finish.

Karen’s Umbreon goes down in three Rock Smashes from Fang; a defense reduction on the second and lucky crit on the third take it directly from half health to fainted, so Karen doesn’t have a chance to heal it. An Ice Beam from Nessie drops Vileplume into the red; it retaliates by paralyzing with Stun Spore. Karen uses a Full Restore and Nessie immediately drops it back into the red, and Ice Shard allows her to move first despite the paralysis and finish it off. Gengar outspeeds Fang to take his HP into the yellow with Focus Blast, while Fang’s Crunch does over half; Fang survives another Focus Blast with just two HP remaining to deliver the KO with a second Crunch. Lumi easily OHKOs Murkrow with Ice Beam, and Axolittle tanks a Crunch to one-shot Houndoom with Earthquake.

All of Lance’s team outspeeds mine. Lumi easily tanks one attack to OHKO Gyarados with Thunderbolt. Lance sends out his level 50 Dragonite next; Nessie’s Ice Beam fails to one-shot, but Sitrus Berry activation means he doesn’t heal it, and Ice Shard lets Nessie move first to finish it on the next turn. Fang takes a Thunder Fang from Aerodactyl and takes it out with Surf. A crit Thunder from the next Dragonite one-shots Nessie before she can move, so Rua comes out to buy another Max Revive turn (and predictably instantly dies to Thunder as well). Nessie gets paralyzed by Thunder Wave upon her return, but is instantly healed by the Cheri Berry I gave her for that contingency, and one-shots with Ice Beam. The last Dragonite paralyzes Nessie again, but she uses Ice Beam and one-shots despite that. Axolittle takes an Air Slash from Charizard, flinches, and is dropped into the red by the time she gets an attack in. Waterfall fails to one-shot, and she faints to Shadow Claw, but any of my team can do this job, so Fang comes back in and finishes Charizard with Surf. Definitely one of the hardest fought E4 runs I’ve had, but the Championship is mine.

Championship Team:
Fang - Feraligatr (m, Rash, Torrent) lvl 48
Axolittle - Quagsire (f, Docile, Water Absorb) lvl 46
Lumi - Lanturn (f, Mild, Volt Absorb) lvl 47
Nessie - Lapras (f, Jolly, Water Absorb) lvl 47

HM slaves:
Rua the Red Gyarados (Strength, Whirlpool)
Skarmory (Flash, Cut, Fly)

Probably going to come back for another session or two to do Kanto and the battle with Red, but that’s the main storyline done.

I think it's okay to hack both of them. Personally I would hack one as starter and one after first/second Gym.

Ultimate Monotype Challenge

KANTO
Spoiler:
Poison Monotype Challenge
FireRed | CURE

Started this challenge two days ago, after like 5 attempts in the past. I got into a groove and was progressing at a really nice rate, which made me want to completely focus on this challenge.

Just finished it now. Did all the postgame stuff except rematch the Elite Four because their type coverage was a little too much for me. I tried using Venomoth for the second half of the game but it never got much use. In the postgame I tried replacing her with Ariados, but he also didn't get much use. Here's all my gym victory screenshots. I'll also post my current team below, but I'm probably done with this region. Looking forward to Johto!
