Flying Monotype Challenge - Emerald Kaizo Edition - Update #4

Spoiler:
  • Received Surf and backtracked to explore new areas (north of Route 115, New Mauville, etc.)
  • Went through the routes to Fortree City and cleared out the Weather Institute from Team Aqua and beat my rival afterwards
  • Made it to Fortree City, which meant that I'll get a new team member being Dodrio (which was a big pain to catch), to replace Pidgeot since Dodrio is a lot faster and stronger but squishier.
  • Got the Devon Scope and cleared out the trainers in the routes going to Lilycove City before facing Winona
  • Winona surprisingly wasn't too difficult since she has Zapdos (which I don't have answers too) and it's a double battle. In the end, I managed to come out on top and received the Feather Badge
    - Dodrio and Salamence used Double Edge and Draco Meteor to take down Zapdos, Dodrio goes down to Thunderbolt in the process
    - Pelipper's Hydro Pump OHKOs Aerodactyl
    - Winona's Crobat goes down to Ice Beam + Surf from Pelipper
    - Articuno goes down to 2 Fire Punches from Charizard
    - Salamence OHKOs Flygon with Draco Meteor
    - Moltres is able to finish off Salamence and Pelipper with Sky Attack, but gets taken down by Crobat and Charizard eventually
  • Made it to Lilycove City (sorta, Aqua Grunts are blocking the way but you're still able to use Fly to prematurely enter the city)
  • Beat the rival for the last time to gain access to the Department Store
  • Cleared out Mt. Pyre of Team Aqua grunts and received the Magma Emblem to infiltrate the Magma hideout
  • Went through the entire hideout which was very difficult due to the influx of Chlorophyll users (fast Sleep Powder is obnoxious) and Explosion leads.
  • Maxie was surprisingly pretty easy overall, I thought his Entei and Tyranitar would body my team but that wasn't the case (I realized I had a chance once I discovered I had the Iron Tail TM)
    - 2 Iron Tails from Salamence takes out Tyranitar due to the Defense drop
    - Pelipper tanks Draco Meteor and Flygon goes down to Ice Beam
    - Salamence chips Entei with Draco Meteor before going down, Gyarados gets taken down due to an unfortunate burn causing Bounce + Double Edge to not finish Entei off. Dodrio cleans up with Quick Attack
    - Exeggutor gets taken out by 2 Drill Pecks from Dodrio who is still faster despite Chlorophyll
    - Dodrio takes Arcanine's Intimidate before going down, Charizard 2HKOs with Overheat
    - Lastly, Gengar goes down to Crobat's 2 Shadow Balls
  • Backtracked all the way back to Lilycove City to infiltrate the Aqua Hideout
  • Made it to the end relatively easy (not having permanent weather certainly helps) and Matt was sort of a pushover

Flying Monotype Challenge - Emerald Kaizo Edition - Update #5

to avoid triple posting, I've edited this post with the 5th update ^^

Spoiler:
  • Made it to Mossdeep City after clearing out the Aqua Hideout
  • Challenged Liza & Tate at the Mossdeep Gym and after a short grinding session plus a few attempts, I received the Mind Badge
    - Salamence and Crobat take down Latios with Draco Meteor and Shadow Ball
    - Latias goes down to the same Draco Meteor + Shadow Ball combo from Salamence and Crobat
    - Crobat goes down to Medicham's Shadow Ball, Medicham gets OHKOed by Salamence's Air Slash
    - Starmie takes down Salamence with Ice Beam, Dodrio takes it out with 2 Double-Edges
    - Jirachi gets OHKOed by Charizard's Overheat
    - Overheat + Double-Edge from Charizard and Dodrio takes down Gardevoir
  • Went to the Mossdeep Space Station to clear the place of Team Magma Grunts, and also beat Maxie/Tabitha in the multi-battle with Steven. I chose Pelipper/Dodrio/Salamence, while Steven had an Aerodactyl/Starmie/Metagross
    - Gengar takes down Pelipper with Thunderbolt, but gets 2HKOed by Salamence's Air Slash
    - Salamence and Aerodactyl take out the opposing Charizard with Air Slash and Fly
    - The opposing Salamence easily goes down to my Salamence's Draco Meteor and Aerodactyl's Fly
    - Tauros eventually goes down to Air Slash and Fly spam from Salamence and Aerodactyl after spamming Earthquake for most of the battle
    - Flygon goes down to Fly and Draco Meteor
    - Metagross takes out Steven's Aerodactyl with Meteor Mash, eventually goes down to Air Slash and Dive spam from Salamence and Starmie
  • Received the HM for Dive and went on a few detours for hidden items underwater and to go to Pacifidlog Town plus Sootopolis City
  • Made it to the Seafloor Cavern and cleared the place of Team Aqua Grunts, which was very hard due to the permanent rain and how my team struggles against Water-types (especially since all of the have Ice Beam as coverage)
  • Made it to the bottom and challenged Archie in a surprise double battle, the first try I was close but lost to Qwilfish's Destiny Bond spam and not having any Pokeballs to waste turns on, 2nd try was successful in the end
    - Raikou gets taken down by 2 of Salamence's Earthquakes while taking down Crobat and Dodrio with Thunder
    - Crobat and Dodrio chip Suicune low enough where another Earthquake finishes it off
    - Dragonite barely survives the Draco Meteor and is able to take out Pelipper with Thunder, it goes down to Salamence's Air Slash the next turn.
    - Metagross gets weakened by Charizard's Overheat, Salamence's Earthquake finishes it off
    - Qwilfish finishes off Charizard with Gunk Shot and also goes down to Salamence's Earthquake
    - Kingdra takes out Salamence with Draco Meteor, but eventually goes down to Gyarados's Bounce and Double-Edge along with Draco Meteor's recoil
  • Emerged from the cavern and made my way towards Sootopolis City

Pokémon Ultimate Flying Monotype - Fire Red Chapter 2

Spoiler:
Misty was difficult because Starmie did it well resisting my attacks and lost the first try, but in the second try Fearow beated both Staryu and Starmie with ease. After buying some superpotions, I have caught a Spearow and defeat all trainers of Route 5, headed to Vermilion City, one of my favorites cities and traded this Spearow to a Farfetch'd (Farfie), I don't know if his nature is random but got Adamant Nature so good for him.

In S.S. Anne I tried to level all my team with all the trainers and battled Blue: First Pidgeotto vs. Farfie, thanks to his Stick he defeated him with two criticals of Peck, leading Farfie with half of life but good fight, then Raticate vs Mordisquitos the Zubat, Raticate used 2 tail whips so I decided to change to Cefiro the Pidgeotto after confusing him, after some quick attacks Raticate was fainted, then Blue sent Kadabra and I kept Pidgeotto that with the foe's low defense was fainted easily. The last and best Pokémon was Wartortle, I decided to use Tramuntana the Fearow and after a stalling fight we finally won Blue. After getting HM01 Cut we went to the most challenging Gym, as I have nothing to counter Lt. Surge.

Remember that I cannot use Charmeleon in important fights because of my extra rule, so Magnemite will be really hard!

1. Zubat VS Voltorb--> Winner Voltorb almost 1HKOed
2. Fearow VS Voltorb--> Winner Fearow with lowering its defense and fury attack
3. Pidgeotto VS Pikachu--> Winner Pidgeotto with quick attacks
4. Pidgeotto VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu being faster
5. Farfetch'd VS Raichu--> I had to sacrifice him to heal Fearow
6. Fearow VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu ( I would have won if fury attack hit more than 2 times...)

Second Try: I see that Zubat cannot do anything here, so this time I will start with Farfetch'd and keep Fearow and Pidgeotto against Raichu

1. Farfetch'd VS Voltorb--> Winner Farfetch'd, I was lucky that he didn't use any electric attack
2. Farfetch'd VS Pikachu--> Winner Farfetch'd with a Cut, now Lt. Surge has two Pikachu
3. Zubat VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu, my intention was to confuse him but whatever...
4. Pidgeotto VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu, nice try
5. Fearow VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu, using 3 Double Team and defeated the rest...

Third Try... But before, I realized that Zubat evolves at 22, I thought it was way later so I hope Golbat can help this time!

1. Golbat VS Voltorb--> Winner Golbat with Bite and being faster
2. Golbat VS. Pikachu--> Winner Golbat, but got paralized
3. Farfetch'd VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu with a critical
4. Pidgeotto VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu, Double team again...
5. Fearow VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu with 1 PS

Fourth try:

1. Farfetch'd VS Voltorb--> Winner Farfetch'd with Critical Cut
2. Pidgeotto VS Pikachu--> Winner Pidgeotto with Quick Attack ( paralized)
3. Golbat VS Raichu--> Winner Raichu, I tried to confuse, but got double team three times, and when I finally confused LT. Surge used Full Heal
4. Fearow VS Raichu--> Finally! Wiht two Fury Attacks we won!

Flying Monotype Challenge - Emerald Kaizo Edition - Update #6

almost near the finish line!
Spoiler:
  • Flew back to Sootopolis City to watch Groudon and Kyogre battle it out
  • Went inside the Cave of Origin to find Wallace, also caught a new team member that will replace Crobat being Aerodactyl (later on after the gym) inside
  • Made my way to the Sky Pillar near Pacifidlog Town to awaken Rayquaza
  • Rayquaza stops Groudon and Kyogre, peace returns to the world and I receive the HM for Waterfall
  • Before challenging the Sootopolis Gym, I decided to catch 2 temporary party members being Togetic (Lilycove City) and Mantine (Sootopolis City) to use against Juan. Togetic has Follow Me and Mantine has much better special bulk than Pelipper (which got 2 shot by Surf or Hydro Pump under than rain in the Seafloor Cavern)
  • Challenged the Sootopolis Gym and I decided to swap out Charizard for Aerodactyl temporarily. Before we can face Juan I had to battle Wallace, which took a couple of tries due to his Milotic being hard to take down and having Swift Swim
    - Salamence lives Kingdra's Ice Beam and OHKOs with Draco Meteor before going down to recoil
    - Ludicolo goes down to 2 Poison Fangs from Crobat after missing Grasswhistle twice
    - Dodrio weakens Castform with Double-Edge before going down to Thunder, Aerodactyl finishes with Ancient Power
    - Aerodactyl chips Lapras with Rock Slide but goes down to Surf, Crobat finishes with 2 Poison Fangs after surviving Ice Beam
    - Gyarados chips Milotic with Double-Edges but misses the finishing Bounce, Pelipper finishes with Surf
    - Swampert goes down to Pelipper's Hydro Pump and Surf with a lucky 2nd turn wake up from Yawn
  • Swapped out Dodrio and Pelipper for Togetic and Mantine before challenging Juan, who took only 1 extra try before I won the Rain Badge.
    - With Togetic's Follow Me support, Kingdra OHKOs Togetic with Ice beam, then Salamence takes down Kingdra with Draco Meteor
    - Castform takes down Salamence with Ice Beam but, prior damage from Salamence's Air Slash allows Gyarados to pick up the KO with Body Slam
    - Ludicolo lands a Thunder Punch on Mantine before going down to Air Slash by Crobat and Mantine
    - Lapras takes down Mantine with Thunder but, ends up geting flinched by Rock Slide and Air Slash from Aerodactyl and Crobat before going down to a final Rock Slide
    - Aerodactyl somehow survives Thunder from Lanturn and Lanturn eventually goes down to the same Rock Slide and prior damage from Crobat's Poison Fang
    - Aerodactyl outspeeds Vaporeon and chips it with Air Slash before going down, Crobat finishes with Poison Fangs after barely surviving Hydro Pump and dodging Sing
  • After the gym battle, I officially benched Crobat for Aerodactyl, who has been a massive MVP during this run (honestly it is just behind Salamence in terms of viability and usefulness). Aerodactyl just hits harder and gives me a way to deal with Ice-types.
  • Took a detour to visit Meteor Falls to catch a Dragonair in the "Bagon Room" to replace Gyarados (who I used mainly as a way to deal with Water-types, but Dragonite having Thick Fat and a neutrality to Electric was a better option). While Dragonair is pretty common (40% chance) it was the biggest pain to catch due to Whirlwind, Double-Edge, Shed Skin, low catch rate, and how obnoxious fishing is in RSE. It legit took me an hour with speed up to catch a Dragonair that evolved into a Dragonite with Thick Fat (Dragonite can get either Shed Skin or Thick Fat as potential abilities)
  • Finally made it to Ever Grande City and before tackling the Victory Road, I grinded everyone up to Level 85
  • Beat Wally for the last time, as well as Vito and Red (reoccurring trainer in Emerald Kaizo) before making it to the Pokemon League

Flying Monotype Challenge - Emerald Kaizo Edition - Update #7 Finale

Spoiler:
  • Used the 1 Pokedollar Rare Candies to level everyone up to Level 100 before challenging the Elite 4
  • As for the team I chose... Aerodactyl and Dodrio were chosen for speed control mainly, Aerodactyl has very high base speed and Dodrio has Silk Scarf boosted Quick Attack for squishier targets. Pelipper had specific jobs which was to deal with Drake's Salamence, Steven's Aerodactyl, and most importantly, Glacia's Swift Swim Swampert. Salamence is a general powerhouse who was the MVP of the Elite 4 run. Charizard was mainly brought in for Steven, while Dragonite was mainly brought in for Glacia (specifically her Swift Swim Dewgong)
  • Sidney wasn't too bad, had to reset once because I underestimated how much Sableye was buffed in Emerald Kaizo. Once Sableye went down, the rest of the match was pretty easy
    - Salamence takes down Sableye with 3 Air Slashes
    - Chairzard weakens Machamp with Flamethrower and goes down to Rock Slide, Dodrio finishes with Quick Attack
    - 2 Ancient Powers from Aerodactyl takes down Alakazam
    - Aerodactyl loses the speed tie (I assume) with Jolteon and goes down to Thunderbolt, Dragonite takes down Jolteon with Dragon Claws and an Extremespeed
    - Dragonite takes Tauros's Intimidate and chips with Extremespeed before going down to Double-Edge, Dodrio revenges with Double-Edge
    - Dodrio chips Houndoom with Double-Edge before going down to Heat Wave, Pelipper tanks Crunch and KOs with Surf
  • Next up was Phoebe who surprisingly didn't give me much trouble. Her biggest 2 problems are Sableye and Dusclops who are not only incredibly bulky but, they have access to Double Team. Due to a lot of luck, I was successful on my first try
    - Aerodactyl takes out Gengar with 2 Ancient Powers, using it's Chesto Berry to wake up from Hypnosis
    - Ludicolo gets OHKOed by Salamence's Air Slash
    - Crobat goes down to Aerodactyl's Ancient Powers
    - Aerodactyl chips Gardevoir with Ancient Power before going down to Thunderbolt, Dodrio finishes with Double-Edge
    - Salamence is able to land 3 Air Slashes to knock out Dusclop despite the Double Teams
    - Charizard was not so lucky with Sableye and goes down to Shadow Ball due to missing Overheats, Salamence is able to finish it off with lucky flinches with Air Slash despite Double Team
  • Glacia was very hard, I honestly don't remember how many times I reset but just know the number is pretty high. With some lucky hax, I managed to narrowly come out on top
    - Glalie goes down to Rock Slide and Ancient Power from Aerodactyl due to a lucky flinch
    - Charizard is able to land an Overheat on Regice before falling to Thunder, Aerodactyl revenges with Ancient Power
    - Dragonite weakens Dewgong with Rock Slide and Extremespeed before going down to Ice Beam, Dodrio finishes it with Quick Attack
    - Swampert gets 2HKOed by Pelipper's Hydro Pumps
    - Pelipper chips Lapras with Hydro Pump before going down, misclicked Air Slash with Aerodactyl so it goes down to Hydro Pump, Dodrio finishes with Double-Edge
    - Dodrio attacks with Double-Edge before going down to Wailord's Hyper Voice, Salamence finishes with Air Slash and Earthquake since Wailord decided to use Water Spout instead of Ice Beam
  • Drake was pretty difficult (not as much as Glacia). My main issue was his Tyranitar who had Intimidate and Latios which has a Soul Dew equipped to boost its SpDef and SpA. Eventually on my 3rd attempt, the hax gods smiled down upon me and I beat him
    - Charizard lands a critical hit Dragon Claw on Latios and barely survives the Draco Meteor, Charizard finishes Latios with Quick Attack the turn after
    - Dragonite gets OHKOed by Salamence's Draco Meteor
    - Pelipper tanks the opposing Salamence's Draco Meteor and finishes it with Ice Beam
    - Salamence lands an Iron Tail on Tyranitar before going down to Ancient Power, Aerodactyl couldn't finish with Earth Power so I sacked Charizard and Dodrio cleans up with Quick Attack
    - Dragonite survives Draco Meteor and takes down Kingdra with Dragon Claw and Extremespeed
    - Dragonite chips Latias with a critical hit Extremespeed before going down to Dragon Claw, Aerodactyl ends the battle with Ancient Power
  • Last but not least, we have the Champion Steven (who replaces Wallace). I beat him on the 3rd try but, it was mainly due to some bad luck on his Aerodactyl getting the Ancient Power boost and Pelipper consistently missing Hydro Pump. Overall, Steven was honestly pretty easy compared to the Elite 4 just because his team is pretty squishy compared to Phoebe, Glacia, and Drake.
    - Charizard OHKOs Metagross with Overheat
    - Jirachi goes down to 2 Earthquakes from Salamence
    - Dodrio nearly takes out Starmie with Double-Edge and goes down to Ice Beam, Dragonite finishes it with Extremespeed
    - Pelipper tanks the opposing Aerodactyl's Ancient Power and retaliates with Hydro Pump
    - Metwo eventually gets taken down by Dragonite's Extremespeeds
    - Deoxys easily goes down to a critical hit Extremespeed from Dragonite
  • Anyways, I made it to the Hall of Fame and officially beat Emerald Kaizo with only Flying-type mons!!!!!!

Closing Thoughts
I definitely overestimated mono-Flying in Emerald Kaizo quite a bit. I think because Flying has powerhouses like Salamence, Dragonite, and Gyarados, I assumed that the run would've been a cake walk. However, I definitely struggled in the mid game portion, especially against Team Aqua since I had no reliable Water answers besides Gyarados and maybe Pelipper (Tropius gets bopped by Ice Beam which is on every Water-type), which got even worse in Seafloor Cavern, Sootopolis Gym, Glacia's Room which had perma rain and Swift Swim abusers ready. Emerald Kaizo was a weird experience though, the amount of random outspeeds which I don't understand (see Crobat getting outsped by an Aggron, and that same Aggron got outsped by Pelipper and Tropius) and just how the additional stuff feels like it's there to waste your time (like why do we give incredibly rare mons a low catch rate and Whirlwind/Self-Destruct/Roar/Memento). Idk if I would play Emerald Kaizo again but, monotype runs were pretty fun ig.

FireRed Water Monotype Update #4:

It’s been several months since I last updated, and I haven’t played too much, but I have made a bit of progress since my last update. My team is headed for Fuschia City and gym badge #5. Horsea (now Seadra) has also joined the ranks, and is well on its way to catching up to the other team members.

The team:
Blastoise
Gyarados
Vaporeon
Seadra

Mostly in the 40s.

Sword - Part 1
Slow start, but it should snowball from here. I tried to do this earlier this year, but I was burnt out from my normal playthrough. I'm already farther than I made it on that attempt.

Spoiler:
I didn't remember if Hop took the stronger starter or the weaker starter, but I figured by taking the fire-type off the table, I could guarantee he took something that was strong against my team, for the extra challenge. The first hour or so of the game is mostly plot & tutorial, which I won't be spoiling here. I just ran around avoiding battles as best I could, and fortunately, a solo Scorbunny was enough to get me to the Wild Area without any trouble. My true starter (my first ground-type for the run) was a Diglett caught in a raid den. My brother has gotten me interested in keeping bread starters & using them to bake all kinds of things, so my name scheme is going to be baked goods. Since Diglett will turn into Dugtrio, which kind of looks like three fingers (or hot dogs) sticking up from the ground, and since my Diglett is female, I named her "ladyfingers." We ran around for about three more hours, taking breaks and picking back up a few hours later, after checking weather conditions in two key biomes. I knew I would need Swinub to deal with Milo, so I didn't let myself proceed until I had one.

The team going into the first gym was Diglett (Ladyfingers), Drilbur (Bagel), Mudbray (Brownie), Tympole (Popover), Bunnelby (Biscuit), and Swinub (Muffin). Ladyfingers led the charge, and got off a couple of Sucker Punches against Gossifleur. Unfortunately, her defenses are still low, so she went down after two rounds of Magical Leaf. Bagel followed up with a quick Metal Claw revenge kill. Eldegoss did exactly what I expected a grass-type with Dynamax to do: it OHKO'd four Pokemon in a row. Fortunately, two of them got in a quick hit before fainting. Milo went easy on me, when I was down to just Brownie. He wasted a few crucial turns on Round attacks, which let Brownie chip Eldegoss down a bit with Stomp & Payback. It also gave me a chance to revive Muffin. When Brownie finally went down, Muffin swapped in at about half health. Eldegoss was hurting badly, and Muffin was able to land the kill shot with a well-placed Ice Shard.

Sword - Part 2

Spoiler:
I had forgotten (or I never knew in the first place) that the surprise encounters can have a different level than the Pokemon wandering in the overworld grass. I could have had Golett, from day one. I went back and picked up one of those, and named it Donut. Nessa's gym scared me. It got really frightening when Arrokuda showed up and started outspeeding my team. But this gym was actually much easier than I expected. Ladyfingers was able to bulldoze its way through Goldeen. Biscuit & Bagel were each able to land a quick hit on Arrokuda, and worked as a team to take it down. Bagel was also able to get in one hit on Gigantamax Dreadnaw, which helped set up Popover to come in and get the knockout.

And if Nessa was a pushover, you know Kabu was no challenge at all. By this point, half of my team had evolved. Ground typing also gave me resistance against all of his monsters. Popover had extra resistance, from her secondary water type. In hindsight, I probably could have swept with just one Pokemon.

Sword - Part 3

Spoiler:
I fought Bea and Ballonlea couple of weeks ago, then I took a break to play a different challenge and to finish up the storyline of "God of War", but I'm back, now. I didn't keep good notes on either of these fights. If I recall correctly, the Bea fight was carried by Donut & Popover, and Machamp was the only real threat. I can't remember much about the Ballonlea fight either, but Bagel must have swept (or near-swept) that battle. I just finished up the fight with Gordie, and that fight was all Popover.

I'm not having a lot of fun playing this challenge, in this particular generation. I can see what people meant about the game being too easy. On my first playthrough, I was doing a (mostly) blind Nuzlocke, and that could be scary. But I don't know if anything has threatened a full-party wipe in this game. I feel like the balance is off really bad, with Dynamax being a key feature. There is a three-turn threat window in every gym battle. I'm not seeing the gym leaders do any of the complicated setups that gym leaders in previous games would perform, in previous gens. There's also no threat of a z-move lurking in the back, like we saw in SuMo. The whole game, my strategy is just saving a meat shield to stick in front of the Dynamax aces. And in some cases, as with Gordie's Coalossal, I can create a Dynamax mon in that window that can perform 4x damage attacks, outspeed, and create favorable weather/field conditions in one turn.

The selection of new Ground-types (brand new, or new forms) is very disappointing in this game, as well. Only one ground-type gets a Gigantamax form, and the abilities on the new guys are mostly useless. And looking at Sandaconda, Runerigus, and Stunfisk - there are better ground, ground/ghost, and ground/steel types which also happen to be catchable earlier in the game.

Anyway, that's my rant for the day. Hoping to finish this up this week and then give VGC another try.

Chapter 1: Rock
Story
Spoiler:
I started my journey as a boy named Connor. After getting caught trying to steal May's pokeball out of her room, I left town and ran into Professor Birch getting attacked.
I took a Torchic from his bag and saved him. I made my way through Oldale town and went to challenge May, where I almost lost due to a critical hit. I then went back to Little
Root Town, got my pokedex and headed for Roxanne. On my way I saw my dad and he made me watch some kid catch a ralts, was glanced over as a potenially talented trainer, burned
some worms, and saved a guy getting attacked by a very weak pirate, killed some more bugs and made it to Rustboro City. I went to the gym and Nugget evolved into Combusken
after taking down all of Roxanne's lackies. With my newly found advantage over rock types I easily destroyed Roxanne's entire team, securing myself a stone badge!

Chapter 2: Fighting
Story
Spoiler:

After leaving the Rustboro gym I saw that weird dude from the forest getting chased by another pirate. I followed and he asked me to follow the pirate! I eventually tracked
him down in a creepy cave. When confronted, the pirte attacked me, but I swiftly ended his career and saved an old man's Wingull. When I returned to the weird dude he took me
in a big building and gave me a cell phone! I ran into May, exchanged numbers with her and then we battled! I got really excited (and jealous) when I found out she had a
Toarkoal! I easily defeated her once again, and she told me to go see the old dude I helped earlier. I got taught how to teach Pokemon how to cut down trees and I went to go
find the old man. I found him in a shack by the shore chasing his Wingull around a table. He brought me to Dewford Town as a reward for saving Peeko. I headed straight for
the gym, which I came to find out was pitch black. After running into many walls I found the gym leader Brawly. Nugget easily took down his entire team, with a bit of a fight
from Makuhita. Two badges down, six to go!

Chapter 3: Electric
Story
Spoiler:

After obtaining my second badge, I went inside a cave on the north of the island. After getting lost in the cave I found a guy named Steven, who just so happened to be who a
letter given to me by Devon President was addressed. He told me I could become champion one day, what a nice guy! After returning to town I met up with Mr Briney and he offered
to take me to Slateport City! After relaxing on the beach and checking out the market I found a whole group of those pirates called Team Aqua outside the museum. I went inside
shortly after they did, and I found the captain of a ship. Right on cue the pirates showed up to steal parts from Stern, but Nugget got rid of them quickly! Their leader
showed up, spewed some nonsense and then they ran away. As I left the museum the guy who told me I didn't have talent as a trainer came up to me changing his mind. He gave me
his number before running off. Next I set off for the next gym. I went north to Route 110, where Professor Birch showed up in person to give me his phone number. I told him
he could have just asked my mom for my number. Down the road I found a house where a voice told me I was being watched. I looked underneath the table in the center of the room
and found a man scrunched up underneath. He told me to solve his puzzle in a room at the back of his house. I solved his extremely simple puzzle and he gave me some special
candy, which I gladly accepted. I continued my journey to become the best, and ran into May again on the way. She challenged me to a battle, where Nugget easily defeated her
Lombre. Next she sends out Marshtomp, who put up a serious fight, but can't stand up to Nugget, the all powerful fire-chicken. Lastly she sends out a Slugma; which I admire so; and
it also is defeated by Nugget. She gave me a gift for my hardwork and ran off. I continued on and made it to Mauville city. I went to check out the local bike shop, where I was
given a free, brand new bike! Next I headed for the third gym, where that kid my dad made me help was blocking the entrance. After challenging me to a battle to prove he is
strong enough to face the gym leader, Nugget defeated his Pokemon in one blow, practically destroying his dream of becoming a Pokemon trainer. I fought my way through the gym
and I made it to Watson! The battle doesn't last long, as Nugget easily defeats every Pokemon Watson throws at him.

Chapter 4: Fire
Story
Spoiler:

After defeating Watson I decided to head straight for the next gym! Unfortunately there were rocks blocking the path there. After getting a tip, I went an met the Rock Smash
Guy, who taught me how to teach my Pokemon to smash rocks! With the rocks out of my way I moved on to route 112, where I found a wild numel behind a giant rock! I just had to
catch it, so Volcamel officially joins the team! I moved forward and came upon a cave called the Fiery Path, where I captured a Slugma and a Torkoal, which I named Escargot and
Kilauea respectively. After some initial training for my new Pokemon, reuniting two lost lovers in a cave, getting threatened by an old woman and finding some weirdos with
horned robes talking about metorites, I decided to head for my next gym badge. After sleeping in an old woman's hut, and collecting soot as currency I made it to Fallarbor
Town. With not much to do, I moved on and through Route 114 into Metoer Falls. It was a beautiful cave with a waterfall in it, but I ran into both the creeps who wore horned
robes and the pirates! The pirates warned me to keep an eye on Team Magma and I left the cave and headed back to Mt Chimney to help the pirates take on Team Magma. Kilauea and
Volcamel performed as well as expected, taking down Team Magma's leader's Pokemon. Until he sent out his Camerupt anyways. He defeated both Volcamel and Kilauea, but was just
barely defeated by Escargot. Shortly after I finally arrived at Lavaridge Town, and headed straight for the gym! The first fight with Flannery was her Numel against mine. Hers
was somehow quicker and got a magnitude 8, knocking Volcamel right out. I sent out Kilauea and body slammed her Numel twice, knocking it out with a critical hit! Next she sent
out a Slugma, which I contested with my own Escargot. Escargot easily defeated his oponent. Flannery decided to get serious and send out her Camerupt, which I brought Kilauea
back on the field. Luckily I was able to paralyze it with a body slam, and just repeatedly body slamming until Camerupt was defeated. Lastly she sent out her own Torkoal to take
on mine. Having used curse a couple of times during the battle before, Kilauea had a slight edge over Flannery's, which secured my fourth badge!

Sword - Part 4 - Finale - MAJOR SPOILERS

All done! So that's a monotype ground run done, in all 8 main-game regions. May I please have ultimate ground champ credit?

Spoiler:
Final Gyms
Okay, so I did this part last weekend, and it was in-between a very full day of family visits, so I didn't keep great notes. Suffice to say, these weren't a real challenge.

Marnie Fight
Bagel led. KO'd Liepard with Drill Run. Scrafty came in. Bagel dynamaxed and KO'd Scrafty with Max Knuckle + Max Steelspike, but she was confused at the end. Morpeko swapped in. Bagel knocked herself out from confusion. Popover swapped in and hit with Drain Punch, but Morpeko held on at one percent and KO'd her with Bullet Seeed. Ladyfingers came in and cleaned up. Grimmsnarl came in and gigantamaxed. Ladyfingers hit once with Earthquake, then fainted. Biscuit swapped in. She used Bounce, to stall for a turn. She hit, paralyzed Grimmsnarl, and survived his attack. She finished the fight with Earthquake.

Hop Fight
Bagel led. Hop tried to heal through Brick Break, but it was too much for Dubwool. Snorlax swapped in. Donut swapped in. Two Brick Breaks brought him down. Corviknight swapped in. Shadow Punch, Shadow Punch, Hyper Potion, Shadow Punch, and we get the KO. Pincurchin swapped in. One Stomping Tantrum was enough to KO her. Rillaboom swapped in. Muffin swapped in. Both mons dynamaxed. Muffin came out hard with Max Hailstorm, which took Rillaboom to the red. The hail was enough to pick up the win.

Oleana Fight
I don't normally record "team admin" or "team boss" battles, but used dynamax on Muffin here, so I guess I'll do a quick summary. Muffin came in first, and took turns trading out with Bagel against the stuff I thought they were safe to fight. Muffin probably could have done it all alone, but she got burned on the first turn.

Bede Fight
Muffin led. Mawile went down after one Earthquake. Gardevoir came in, and Bagel came in to meet her. One Smart Strike was enough for a KO. Rapidash came in. I went ahead and Dynamaxed, then hit with Max Steelspike. Hatterene came in, but Mas Steelspike was too much for her, as well.

Nessa Fight
Muffin led. Golisopod came out first. Rock Slide didn't trigger Emergency Exit on the first hit, and it was enough to get a KO on the second hit. Very lucky. Barraskewda was up next, so I swapped in Popover. None of Popover's moves were great, here, but combined with Rocky Helmet and poison touch, I kinda just let Nessa's monster beat itself to death against mine. Seaking was next. This was a good opportunity to feed Popover some potions. Dig & Venoshock eventually got the KO. Pelliper came in, and Ladyfingers came in to meet him. I'm still underestimating her squishiness. She got one good hit with Rock Slide, but Peliper KO'd her on the same turn. Bagel swapped in to clean up with another Rock Slide. Drednaw was up last. Both Pokemon dynamaxed, and Bagel lashed out with Max Quake. I really thought it would be enough, but Drednaw hung on. She KO'd Bagel with Max Stonesurge. At this point, I realized that I never farmed up enough Dynamax Candies for my whole team. D'oh! Muffin came in to end the fight with another Earthquake, though.

Bea Fight
Muffin led. Hawlucha came out first, and outsped us. However, High Jump Kick missed, and we countered with Ice Fang for the KO. Falinks swapped in. Donut Swapped in. Falinks set up like crazy, but I guess the only move it could hit with was Rock Tomb, which just wasn't good enough. Sirfecth'd came in and KO'd Donut with Leaf Blade. Donut was able to get in one Shadow Punch before fainting, which allowed Muffin to come back in and KO with Earthquake. Grapploct came in and wasted its turn with Octoblock. Muffin fired off two more Earthquakes, to get the KO. Machamp came in last. I opted not to Dynamax on this turn. Muffin hit once with Earthquake before fainting. I swapped in Ladyfingers, Dynamaxed, and used Max Quake. To my surprise, this wasn't enough. Fortunately, Ladyfingers survived, and picked up the KO on the next turn.

Raihan Fight
Muffin led. She KO'd Torkoal immediately, with Earthquake. Turtonator came in, and Popover swapped in. A couple of Digs were enough to get the KO. Flygon swapped in, so I swapped Muffin. Ice Fang was lethal. Goodra didn't hold up against Ice Fang, either. Duralodon was up last, and I swapped in Bagel to meet him.
Max Quake spam eventually got me the win.

Rose Fight
Muffin led. Two Earthquakes, and Escavalier was down. Ferrothorn came in, and I swapped in Donut. Hammer Arm put a dent in him, but Power Whip KO'd Donut. Biscuit came in (for the first time in a long time) and KO'd Ferrothorn with Earthquake. Perrserker was up next. A couple more Earthquakes finished him up. Klinkklang came out, and outsped us with Gear Grind. Biscuit fainted. Popover used Drain Punch to beat it. Copperajah came out last, and we both dynamaxed. We took turns trading Max Quake, but of course, Popover won.

Leon Fight
Donut led. Aegislash knocked him out with Shadow Ball, immediately. Bagel came out and traded blows with Aegislash, but the Earthquake game was strong. Haxorus came out, and Muffin swapped in. Ice Fang, followed by Ice Shard, secured the KO. Dragapult was up next, and I swapped in Popover to soak some damage while I healed Muffin. Popover fainted, and I brought Muffin back in. Ice Ice combo again, to KO Dragapult. Inteleon swapped in, and I used a Max Revive to bring back Popover. Popover used Drain Punch until Inteleon was poisoned, and I tried to finish with Venoshock, but Inteleon hit hard with Snipe Shot. I swapped in Bagel. Snipe Shot KO'd Bagel, but the poison took out Inteleon. I swapped in Biscuit, and Leon brought in Mr Rime. I thought my best bet was to Max Revive Bagel, at this point. Mr Rime started with Teeter Dance. Fair enough, I Max Revived Popover, as well. Biscuit went down, so I brought in Bagel. I dynamaxed, and KO'd Mr Rime with Max Steelspike. Charizard came out, and I was banking on Bagel being faster than him. She wasn't. Ladyfingers got outsped, as well. At this point, I knew Charizard was faster than my whole team, so I just used a Max Revive to bring up Donut again. I used this time to bring back Popover & Bagel with Max Revive, while Charizard was charging & firing Solar Beam. Donut went down, so I brought in Popover. Popover used Scald, and Charizard readied his beam again. I swapped in Muffin to take the hit, and she survived. Too bad Fire Blast hit her before she could hit with Rock Slide. I was down to my last Pokemon, but bad AI is bad, so Charizard attempted Solar Beam again. Scald again, and the game is won.

My takeaway from this challenge:
I'm excited to play some more Sword. I will probably buy the DLC and play it, or start working on a semi-competitive team, soon. It's a relief to be a monotype champ again, on the latest gen. It's something I'm trying to do for every main series game. Pokemon is always fun, but the balance in this game feels all wrong. Dynamax/Gigantamax really throws off the flow of combat in an awkward way, and the final battles (Eternatus & Leon) have about a 10-level bump from the fights immediately before them. That's fine, if the game had given me any indication that I was supposed to go grind before fighting him. I also feel like Ground-type was done dirty in this gen. I'd like to see some better Ground-types brought in, on the next DLC, but that doesn't help with a monotype run at all. Seismitoad, Excadrill, and Mamoswine all felt very strong in this game, and each had a moment to shine. Golurk was okay, but its speed limited its ability to get in and fight. Diggersby & Dugtrio were just too fragile to be of much use, and my other monsters were roughly matched with them in speed & type coverage.

Monotype Challenge - Pokemon Blaze Black 2 Edition - Update #1

Some rules I will be following during this playthrough...
  • I'm allowed to use the same amount of healing items the opposing trainer uses. Which means that if a trainer has access to 2 healing items, then I'll be able to use 2 healing items in battle. This means that because no other trainer uses Revives, Revives are banned from being used within a battle
  • Game will be played in Challenge Mode
  • The run will end when I beat Iris and enter the Hall of Fame for the first time

Spoiler:
  • Went through all the prologue stuff and went to the outlook point to meet up with Bianca
  • Before that, I changed the difficulty to challenge mode with the help of the key master NPC (new addition in BB2VW2) and chose Snivy as my starter to bench later on
  • Moved onward to Route 19, allowing me to catch a Wurmple and Weedle. Beedrill and Dustox are the only Poison-types available until I beat Cheren, and both of them are blessed with better stats and an improved movepool (moreso with Beedrill) so they'll be fantastic mons early in the game
  • Decided to evolve Weedle and Wurmple into Kakuna and Cascoon before moving on. Getting a Cascoon took a bit since I've always been lucky getting Silcoon, so it took evolving 3 Wurmples before I got the Cascoon I needed
  • Got ambushed by Alder on my way to Flocessy Town and proceeded on to meet up with Hugh on Route 20
  • Trained Kakuna and Cascoon to Level 10 so they would evolve into Beedrill and Dustox before entering Flocessy Ranch
  • Hugh challenges us to a battle, and thanks to the rain in the Spring season, the battle was incredibly easy
    - Dustox takes a Quick Attack, and is able to OHKO Tailow with a rain-boosted Electroweb
    - Beedrill is able to shrug off Tepig's Ember with the rain and 2HKOs with Cross Poison
  • Handed Hugh his Town Map and we help the owners of the ranch find their missing Herdier
  • Successfully located the missing Herdier and scared off the Team Plasma grunt
  • Went back to Flocessy Town to meet up with Alder who forces us into the Trainer's School, and after that, I went back to Aspertia City to challenge the gym
  • Before challenging Cheren, this romhack actually allows you to challenge the Hoenn Gym Leaders as well. So I went ahead and challenged Roxanne first, which was pretty difficult since my team is all Bug-types
    - Roxanne leads with Anorith and I set up Iron Defense with Dustox, allowing it to tank Aerial Ace and Rock Tomb very well. Eventually Anorith goes down to Bug Bites
    - Lileep was an easy 3HKO with Bug Bite, due to Lileep consuming its Berry Juice
    - Even with 2 Potions, Dustox eventually gets taken down by Nosepass' Volt Switch spam but, it is able to get Roxanne to use a Potion and have Nosepass consume its Berry Juice. Beedrill comes in and is able to finish off Nosepass with 2 critical hits from Cross Poison
  • Next up, it is time to challenge Cheren who is pretty scary due to his team having access to Work Up and an assortment of random physical/special coverage moves. However, the battle went well overall
    - First up is Minccino, which Beedrill is able to OHKO with a critical hit from Cross Poison
    - Dustox dodges Pidove's Air Cutter and 3HKOs it with Electroweb because of its Berry Juice and Pidove greedily boosting with Work Up
    - Cheren's new ace Munchlax is up next and I send in Beedrill. Annoyingly enough, Munchlax gets Reflect through Metronome, allowing it to avoid the 2HKO from Beedrill's Cross Poison and letting Cheren heal it up. Eventually, a couple more Cross Poisons takes in out but, Beedrill gets hit with a hard-hitting Rock Tomb in the process
    - Dustox eats Lillipup's Oran Berry with Bug Bite while it sets up Work Up, Dustox is able to tank multiple Thunder Fangs and eventually Lillipup goes down to Confusion spam
    - Dustox attacks Buneary and eats its Chople Berry with Bug Bite before being forced out with Circle Throw, Beedrill finishes it with Cross Poison
    - Lastly, Teddiursa attempts to boost with Work Up but, misses the Metronome Rollout and gets 3HKOed by Dustox's Bug Bite
  • With that I received the Basic Badge and I can move on to Virbank City!

Monotype Challenge - Pokemon Blaze Black 2 Edition - Update #2

Spoiler:
  • Went all the way back to Route 20 and made it to Virbank City.
  • Before I proceed, I actually found out that Dustox is supposed to learn Psybeam at Level 10 but it learned Confusion instead. Did some research and Drayano said that he added the wrong hex code (or narc) in Dustox's level-up movepool. From what I've seen, there are similar problems like Tyrogue not learning Rock Smash and Hypno not learning Dream Eater, despite the documentation stating that they do. Since that's the case, I did use a save editor to give Dustox Psybeam like it was meant to. Going back to revise the level-up sets seems tedious to do since hex editing is kind of annoying so, I don't blame Dray for keeping it the same since it isn't that game breaking
  • Anyways, the double grass patch that was previously inaccessible until I beat Cheren had Venonat and Venipede. Both of these Pokemon I ignored since Dustox and Beedrill are like better early game versions of them. Scolipede not having access to Speed Boost (just learned that they changed its hidden ability in Gen 6, previously it was Quick Feet) makes it a mediocre choice for the long run, while Venonat just isn't great since its movepool isn't good (learns Quiver Dance late too) and it evolves much later
  • I arrive at Virbank City and decided to explore the Virbank Complex to catch 2 new party members, those being Nidoran-F and Ekans. Nidoqueen I chose because it's bulky and can abuse Sheer Force and Ekans evolves into Arbok pretty early and has utility through Glare and Intimidate.
  • The other Poison-types available here such as Qwilfish (Cheren gives you the Super Rod on your way to Virbank City), Croagunk and Nidoran-M I ended deciding against. Croagunk doesn't really provide a lot in a Poison monotype (Sucker Punch is nice but, it comes late) and it Croagunk evolves pretty late to boot. As for Nidoran-M, I just feel that Nidoqueen's extra bulk will be a lot more useful against gym leaders like Elesa to sponge any random coverage moves. Lastly, Qwilfish just doesn't have a great movepool early on despite its buffed base stats. Koffing is available here but, I will be catching it later since I don't need it now and I can get a slightly higher leveled one down the road.
  • During my exploration of Virbank Complex, Nidoran evolves into a Nidorina
  • Decided to clear out the gym trainers before challenging Brawly near the docks, which went pretty well overall.
    - Ekans uses Screech twice and tanks some of Machop's Rock Slides in the process, due to the defense drops, Machop is 2HKOed by Frustration
    - Beedrill gets OHKOed by Meditite's Psycho Cut but weakens it with Cross Poison. Brawly heals up Meditite but even then, Dustox is able to 2HKO with Silver Wind
    - Dustox sets up an Iron Defense, allowing it to take Makuhita's Fire and Ice Punch. Eventually, Makuhita goes down to a few Psybeams due to it consuming its Berry Juice
    - Scraggy is pretty intimidating because of Bulk Up + Eviolite, making it very bulky. However, the Iron Defense boost allows Dustox to take on Scraggy's Sucker Punch and Revenge and it eventually goes down to Silver Winds and Electrowebs
  • Before facing Roxie, I decided to grind my team to Level 20 since I was a bit behind on levels
  • Onto the battle with Roxie, who can give you trouble with her Toxic Spikes + Venoshock combo. However, since I'm doing a Poison monotype, her strategy doesn't really work against this team. Overall, the battle was pretty difficult and took a few tries
    - Trubbish unknowingly sets up Toxic Spikes but, it gets 2HKOed by Dustox's Psybeam
    - Koffing comes up next and Ekans uses Glare + Screech combo while being able to tank its Flamethrowers and Thunderbolt. Eventually, Koffing goes down to Ekan's Bite spam with the help of some full paralysis hax and flinches
    - Seviper attacks with Sucker Punch but, it goes down to 2 Psybeams from Dustox
    - Golbat is easily the toughest Pokemon on the team due to its speed and access to Nasty Plot, which gave me a lot of trouble in earlier attempts. Golbat sets up Nasty Plot and Dustox gets a lucky confuse with Psybeam. Unfortunately, Golbat breaks through and takes down Dustox with Air Slash. On the following turn, Beedrill narrowly avoids the KO with Return, and luckily enough Golbat hits itself and goes down
    - I heal up Ekans with a Super Potion as Roxie sends in her Whirlipede. Ekans is able to land a Glare before going down to a few Paybacks and I send in Beedrill. Beedrill sets up Harden (allowing it to tank Rollout pretty well) and attacks with multiple Returns before Whirlipede falls
    - Beedrill is able to tank a Normal-Gem boosted Fake Out and Vaccuum Wave from Croagunk before taking it down with 2 Returns
  • After beating Roxie, she gives us the Toxic Badge and then I'm forced to head to the Pokestar Studios
  • I watch Roxie's dad's horrible movie, which is enough to convince him to continue being a captain. At the docks, we face more Team Plasma grunts and then proceed to chase after them in Route 20
  • With that out of the way, I made it to Castelia City which is coincidentally home to a lot of Poison-types.
  • Went to the gym and found out Burgh has stepped out, Iris then appears and helps me find where Team Plasma may be hiding
  • Inside the Castelia Sewers, I went straight to where the Plasma Grunts were located and took them out. Burgh shows up and returns to the gym
  • Before leaving the sewers, I explored the garden area of Castelia CIty and Relic Passage. In the garden area, I find a Moon Stone which I immediately used on Nidorina to evolve it into a Nidoqueen.
  • The garden area is home to most of the Grass/Poison Pokemon such as Budew, Bellsprout, and Oddish. In addition, I'm also able to get a Bulbasaur from a harlequin during the Summer season. Of the Grass/Poison options, I decided to go with Budew mainly because I just really like Roserade.
  • The sewers also houses a lot of Poison-types, but the ones I'm going for are Koffing and Gastly. Koffing gives me a nice bulky mon that has a Ground-immunity, while Gastly is just going to be a very strong offensive presence. I decided against Spinarak since Beedrill is stronger than Ariados (Beedrill is faster and has better STAB options), Gulpin/Trubbish have poor movepools and don't have many advantages over Koffing, while Zubat is a mon I would've used, I have used Zubat so many times before so it was time for a break from it.
  • Now with that out of the way, I've officially decided to bench Dustox who has been a very strong Pokemon so far but, there are other mons I just would rather use honestly. I intended it to just be "another mon" on the team as backup since I thought Beedrill would do most of the work but, Dustox has proven to be a very good mon on its own.
  • Explored the rest of Castelia City and the available parts of Route 4. Did some grinding to allow Ekans, Budew and Gastly to evolve into Arbok, Roselia, and Haunter.
  • Before challenging Burgh, I challenged Wattson who is just chilling inside the bar within the alleyway. The battle was pretty difficult overall due to a lot of unlucky full paralysis in earlier attempts.
    - Beedrill sets up a layer of Toxic Spikes before Voltorb uses Volt Switch. Beedrill is able to tank the incoming Manectric's Flamethrower and attack with Cross Poison. Wattson heals up Manectric but, Manectric ends up falling to a critical hit from Cross Poison and paralyzes Beedrill with Static
    - Voltorb comes in again and takes an Ominous Wind (misclicked) from Haunter and switches out with Volt Switch. In comes Magneton which I sack Beedrill to the Thunderbolt to get a safe switch into Nidoqueen. Nidoqueen sponges a Flash Cannon and is able to take down Magneton with 2 Double Kicks due to a critical hit.
    - Nidoqueen chips Plusle with Venoshock before going down to Grass Knots (Plusle is unaffected by Toxic Spikes due to the Air Balloon). Plusle uses Volt Switch on Roselia and Wattson sends in Voltorb, who gets finished off with Giga Drain.
    - Plusle comes in again and uses Volt Switch on Roselia for Minun to take the Giga Drain, which ends up popping its Air Balloon. Roselia tanks multiple Electro Balls and Minun eventually goes down to Giga Drain.
    - Koffing comes in and is able to tank Plusle's Volt Switches before taking it down with Venoshock.
  • Headed to the Castelia Gym to prepare to take on Burgh in the next update!

Monotype Challenge - Pokemon Blaze Black 2 Edition - Update #3

to prevent flooding, I edited the 3rd update to this post
Spoiler:
  • Did a little bit of grinding before challenging Burgh. Overall, the battle was pretty difficult because I underestimated his team, since I didn't take into account how big of a threat Escavalier would be for my team
    - Beedrill sets up Toxic Spikes while Accelgor sets up a Rain Dance. Beedrill sponges a Focus Blast and attacks with X-Scissor. On the next turn, Accelgor U-Turns out and sends in Escavalier who tanks the incoming X-Scissor.
    - I switched out to Koffing who goes down to Drill Peck and Iron Heads from Escavalier. I send in Arbok to weaken it with Glare and a few Screeches before it falls to Drill Runs. Lastly, Nidoqueen finishes off Escavalier with a Double Kick since it was pretty low from Koffing's Incinerates
    - Haunter gets taken out by Masquerain's Icy Wind + Scald combo but, it is able to weaken it with Venoshock and force Burgh to use a Hyper Potion. Roselia then revenges it with Giga Drain
    - Nidoqueen takes 2 of Scyther's Aerial Ace and 2HKOs with Strength (changed to a Rock-type move in this game)
    - Leavanny nearly gets taken down by Cross Poison and sets up Swords Dance. Beedrill takes it down with X-Scissor on the following turn
    - Nidoqueen nearly takes down Vespiquen with Strength and goes down to a Flying Gem-boosted Acrobatics. Beedrill finishes it off with Return
    - Lastly, Accelgor comes in again to fire off a weak Focus Blast before falling to Beedrill's X-Scissor
  • With that, I receive the Insect Badge and headed to Route 4
  • Met up with Colress in Route 4 who helps us get the Crustle to stop blocking the path. Afterwards, he challenges me to a battle. Colress can be a very difficult battle (moreso his Rotom and Porygon2 are the problems) but, it went well since I got lucky with hax
    - Magnemite uses Volt Switch on Koffing and switches out to Metang who takes the incoming Incinerate. Koffing barely survives Metang's Psyshock and fires off another Incinerate before going down. Haunter finishes Metang off with Ominous Wind the turn after
    - Rotom-Fan tanks Nidoqueen's Strength pretty well and fires off multiple Air Slashes. With a lucky high roll Strength and Nidoqueen avoiding Air Slash's flinches, Rotom-Fan goes down
    - Arbok weakens Porygon2 with Glare and 3 Screeches before going down to Psyshocks. Due to paralysis, Nidoqueen is able to take Porygon2 down with 2 Double Kicks
    - Magnemite comes in again and Nidoqueen chips it with Double Kick before going down to Flash Cannon. Haunter cleans up with Ominous Wind
    - Klink comes in and Haunter uses Confuse Ray, preventing it from attacking. Haunter chips Klink with Ominous Wind and it hits and KOs itself
  • Before heading to Nimbassa City, I took a detour to explore the Desert Resort and to catch a Skorupi for future use
  • Skorupi is a Pokemon I do plan on using but, I can get a higher leveled one later on (also Skorupi will be dead weight since it evolves late and doesn't have great moves early on). This Skorupi is going to be traded for a Togepi from a girl on Route 4, mainly for the Covenant Ore item Togepi is holding that will be used to evolve Haunter into Gengar
  • Explored Relic Castle and the Desert Resort before making my way to Nimbassa City
  • Challenged Ingo & Emmet to a tag battle with Rosa in front of the Battle Subway. Battle went pretty well despite their illegal Lvl 32 Chandelure and Eelektross (not mention high BP moves like Thunderbolt and Flamethrower at this point in the game)
  • Explored Route 5, Route 16 and Lostlorn Forest before challenging the gym. Only 2 new Poison-types are available at this point, being Stunky and Foongus which I will be ignoring. Foongus is bulky but has weak offenses (plus I already have Roselia), Stunky on the other hand isn't a mon I particularly need at this point. Psychic-immunity is nice but, I haven't encountered any battle against a Psychic-type that I struggled with since Nidoqueen/Roselia are able to take the super-effective hits and Gengar/Beedrill outspeed and can KO them pretty easily too
  • Went to the seating area of the Big Stadium to challenge Flannery. The battle was pretty hard mainly because I lacked a Water-type and all her Pokemon have Overheat + White Herb combo to deal a lot of damage, also not to mention her team is pretty bulky
    - Magcargo sets up Shell Smash and cures the defense drops with a White Herb but regardless of that, Nidoqueen still OHKOs it with Dig
    - Roselia puts Camerupt to sleep with Sleep Powder and sets up Toxic Spikes. Unfortunately, Camerupt gets the first turn wake up and KOs Roselia with Overheat and consumes the White Herb. Gengar barely survives an Overheat and 2HKOs Camerupt with Shadow Ball
    - Gengar nearly takes out Torkoal with Venoshock and goes down to Stone Edge. However, the poison damage from Toxic Spikes is enough to finish off Torkoal
    - Nidoqueen dodges Magmar's Will-O-Wisp and takes it down with Dig
    - Koffing drops to Houndoom's Overheat and Beedrill cleans up with a critical hit Cross Poison
  • After beating Flannery, I went to Elesa's old gym to "find" her and got access to her brand new gym
  • Elesa was difficult as expected. Her strategy of just spamming Volt Switch was quite overwhelming, especially since none of my team members were faster than Zebstrika so it was able to just pivot in and out for free. This battle took a few attempts before I finally came out on top by adjusting my main strategy
    - Gengar gets a lucky SpDef drop on Emolga as it tries to paralyze Gengar with Thunder Wave (which doesn't work due to Gengar's Cheri Berry). Elesa heals up Emolga but, it gets OHKOed by Shadow Ball
    - Arbok and Luxray trade Intimidates, Arbok lands a Glare and Luxray uses Volt Switch to send in Zebstrika. Zebstrika uses the Bounce + Power Herb combo and Arbok paralyzes it with Glare. Arbok chips Zebstrika with Poison Tail before going down to Volt Switch
    - Lanturn comes in on the switch and confuses Roselia with Confuse Ray as it sets up Toxic Spikes. Lanturn then paralyzes Roselia with Thunder Wave and spams Hydro Pump. Eventually, Roselia breaks through confusion and paralysis and 2HKOs Lanturn with Giga Drain
    - Zebstrika comes in again and tanks Gengar's Shadow Ball before leaving with Volt Switch. Luxray comes back in to take the Shadow Ball. Due to paralysis, Luxray is unable to attack and goes down to a second Shadow Ball
    - Zebstrika comes in for the last time and finished off by Beedrill's X-Scissor
    - Ampharos tanks Gengar's Venoshock and paralyzes it with Thunder Wave. I switch out to Nidoqueen as Ampharos uses Confuse Ray (I expected a Volt Switch here). Nidoqueen kept on hitting itself as Ampharos fires off Focus Blasts, eventually the poison damage ends up taking out Ampharos
    - Lastly, Galvantula tanks Beedrill's Cross Poison and uses Thunder Wave. Beedrill sponges Volt Switch and takes Galvantula down with another Cross Poison
  • With that, I received the Bolt Badge from Elesa and headed towards Driftveil City

Part #4 - Yeah, I'm still doing this

So I picked this up again for lack of anything else to do...here I was, thinking I would be done with this within a month. I'll be lucky to finish it at the end of the year this rate.

SO. I have decided to drop Golbat and Pidgeotto (sorry guys, maybe in HeartGold) and focus on Charizard and Dragonair...I'll fill my team out with Articuno when I get to it. Realistically I don't need anything else to finish the game, and those two need around 180,000 EXP each to get to Level 55 (rough endgame level target, might go for 60 if I feel like it) and I just don't have the time or energy to needlessly grind. So this is a minimalist run!

Blasted through Erika's Gym as expected...Charmeleon evolved. Team Rocket's Hideout wasn't too difficult either, but Lavender Tower...ugh, I should not have tried to use that place to train my Dratini, which had a weaksauce Shock Wave and Dragon Rage. Gastly are the absolute WORST things to grind off, did you know? If it's not Confuse Ray, it's Lick. Paralysis, Confusion, Spite on my Dragon Rage, Night Shade to reduce my HP by a fairly hefty amount all things considered, and...ugh. Why do they never use Curse when I want them to?! That was...not fun. Not fun at all.

Next stop is Fuschia City for Strength and Surf for Charizard and Dragonair respectively - Strength isn't THAT bad really as an attack move - and then it'll be back to clear Team Rocket out of Saffron City probably. By which point I will hopefully be able to destroy Erika and Sabrina's Gyms without too much difficulty. Hopefully before the end of this month, but I make no promises...

Part #5 - The in-between bits

Whoah boy. When did this become FUN again?

So dropping everything except for Charizard and Dragonair was a fantastic idea - it turns out the game is MUCH less grindy and tedious when you only have 2 Pokemon to worry about, and those 2 Pokemon are 10+ levels above everything else. This afternoon I blasted down the cycling route, out of Fuscia City, and cleared out Silph Co. Both my Pokemon went up by over 10 levels apiece. Muahahaha.

Still, this has been an eye-opening experience on just how relaxed the grind in modern Pokemon games has become - in 3 hours in XY I probably could have done this for six Pokemon. In 3 hours in Shield I could have a full team of level 100. I'm surprised I didn't notice it...but then, it HAS been quite a few years since I dived into a Gen III title. My interest in replaying usually begins at Gen IV...stops at Gen IV too.

So yeah. I demolished Koga with little difficulty too...although Hypno are surprisingly resistant to Flamethrower. That was somewhat vexing. Turns out I'd somehow amassed 140k in money again from all these trainer battles, so I've bought 20 Ultra Balls and I'm going to try my hand at catching Zapdos, because why not. Then it'll be off to Seamfoam Islands for Articuno. Using two Legendary Birds is probably cheating in some rulebook somewhere, but not this rulebook here, and honestly they're more for variety than anything else - between the two of them, Charizard and Dragonair have pretty great coverage, and when Dragonair involves it'll probably be able to clear the E4 all by itself, especially if I level it up to 61 for Outrage. Which I might. It'll depend on how the levelling goes, since it'll probably be all I use between now and the Pokemon League...it has Shock Wave and Surf. I've got Blaine, Giovanni, and a lot of swimmers to take care of. Hoo boy.

Just started Fire Red. I didn't choose the Flying type on my own. I used a spin wheel to help randomize it for me to give even MORE of a challenge. This is my first time doing a Monotype challenge. Excited to see how it goes!

Oct. 05/20 UPDATE: Took some time, but I got lucky and beat Brock with Butterfree. And by lucky I mean, he didn't use Rock Tomb!

Ok so I think I might hate myself because instead of doing the sensible thing of doing white 2 like I said I would I decided “Screw you white, you can’t beat me!” So I started up white 2, beat the first gym leader, caught a male and a female venipede, brought them to the daycare and bred them to get a new fresh one for white, restarted white and beat progressed far enough to trade, traded random patrat for venipede names puera, also traded in my ducklett and patrat from previous run to serve as hm slaves and pignite to laugh at my suffering, grind a lot, beat 2nd gym with Pokémon occasionally listening but strong enough not to hinder me too much catch a lillipup for pick ups because I think I’ll need some luck for this, am now in pinwheel forest trying to progress without overlvling for fear of disobedience and try to beat gym so I can get a Pokémon that will listen every time.

Puera (Whirlipede) lvl 24

Hm slaves
Patrat
Ducklett

I’ve also started a bunch of single runs for fun though I’m pretty far in most so not sure if I should even count them, I know I’m way too far to recount most of my adventures in nearly any of them; yellow psychic, emerald ground, omega ruby normal. All are at least past 4th gym or later.

Managed to finish forest and reach the gym without lvling too much and fought burgh.
Surprisingly easy compared to last time since I had rollout and I even buffed it with defense curl in order to ensure maximum damage and I one shorted his whole team.
After crying over how much time I lost from deleting rollout last run I recovered and proceeded to leave and fought Bianca and easily defeated her to finally evolve into scolipede.
Now trying to rush forward to finally get a second Pokémon.

I’m going to try updating more regularly after each gym but I may forget.

Puera (Scolipede) lvl 30

Hm slaves
Patrat (slowly lvling it for evolution for extra hms)
Ducklett

Ok I went to route 4 and defeated Cheren.
Reached nimbasa city and immediately moved past it to reach route 16 and started hunting for my second Pokémon.
Found a decent Trubbish and named him Quis.
Spent some time trolling around a lot of trainers I saved for this grind.
Finally went back to nimbasa and surprisingly struggled against N.
After a quite a few failed attempts I found a solid strategy and managed to beat him.
Challenged the gym and didn’t have too much trouble beating it.
Proceeded to route 5 and beat cheren... again.
Reached and passed thru Driftveil.
Reached route 6 and started hunting for my last mon.
Found a decent foongus and named her Amanita.
Am now grinding out Amanita with some trainers I saved for this.

Puera (scolipede) lvl 32
Quis (trubish) lvl 31
Amanita (foongus) lvl 23

Hm slaves are unchanged as is the pickup dog though I have dropped pignite due to lack of room.

The run is progressing well and much better than last time. I also am no longer reaching the disobedience threshold as easily as before so that’s no issue either.
