Tch. Lol, I'm pretty spoiled I guess. Yeah, it's a good thing for tha kids an' a bad thing for tha parent, but who says it's a wrong thing ta do just because tha parent gets ta have trouble? XD
Lol, my parents barely have any control over me, I'd rather die with food in my fridge than go an' make myself anything ta eat, I clean my room only once a month an' I never vacuum, I never do any chores, never go shoppin' I just sit in front of my comp all day an' I'm quite rude with adults too.
...and yup, life is good. XD

I just read this article on how parents nowadays are spoiling their children. And I'm wondering... what do you think is the limit for spoiling? And... do you consider yourself spoiled? Is giving a 16 year old a new car too much? Is giving a 6 year old an iPod too much?

Discuss.

*hides* o.o;
I can't be bothered to read the other posts, but to answer your question, giving a car to a 16 years old is too much, same with the iPod...

Kids should be made live in t3h jungle for some time... then they might understand how many priviledges they have nowadays... >.>;

I think that it's BAD for kids to be spoiled.

If a kid is spoiled for his whole childhood, then he will want more when he's older. It's happened in my family.

I'm spoiled... I admit it... my mom reserved every pokemon game for me, bought me anything I wanted... but after she passed away I became less spoiled... but once I started getting good grades again (Like all As, As and Bs type thing, not like the Ds and Fs I was once getting), I'm getting everything I want, got a $300 digital camera for my birthday, an iPod for not failing a marking period... got a $130 DVD (The Rocky Horror Picture Show, 25th edition) for nothing, and I'm getting a new $200 cell phone for being promoted to the 10th grade and because I'm very good with my cell bill.

I actually hate being this spoiled =/

Bye bye!

I think there should be a limit on spoiling. Like, If you give your child something nice, they should do more chores or something. The reason I got my I-pod was because I bought it myself. And the only reason I got my own computer was because my mom works alot on the family computer and I have to do my school work. And even then, they didn't buy it without me helping at all, I had to contribute 100$ to it. But people who just randomly give their children stuff will have bratty children who live off of their Daddy's plastic and won't learn how to live on their own.

(This is my view, so please don't critisize me for it)

You're right, pg92.
Mmm, I got my digital camera just by asking, for instance.
And I don't do chores.
I'm a tad ashamed of being spoiled XD

I'm... borderline, maybe? I do have it pretty easy, though I know people who have it much better and complain

I have to buy pretty much everything I desire, but my parents will pay for my art supplies which are probably the more expensive parts of my hobbies. (For example... an individual marker is $3. o_O I don't have the money to buy more than 3 at a time, but my parents don't mind.) With video games... I tend to get the large systems for Christmas and everything else I pay for. Same with manga, anime, DVDs, imports, etc. My parents did pay for my Kanji dictionary, though... meh.

With chores... to fuel my interests I do a few chores everyday, but honestly it's not all that much for the money I'm paid. ($40/month for allowance... and all I really do is the dishes and that's every second day because I'm lazy o_O) I also have this... paper route thing I do with my brother for another $40/month. I plan on getting a job soon, but I'm... not really sure how since my mom doesn't really want me to get one (she says she's indifferent as to whether I do or not, but she won't drive me and doesn't seem interested in helping me find one <_<).

As for limits on spoiling... I say it's okay for a parent to buy things for their children, but they can't go overboard. Maybe start out by giving an allowance and agreeing to pay the taxes on toys or items the child buys, and increasing that as the child moves onto more expensive hobbies and interests, but when the kid expects everything to be handed to them immediately, without question and without contribution from said child then it's become too much. They have to know the value of money at some point in their life and hopefully that will come before they have to fend for themselves later on. <_<;

Actually i rather call it pointless. Unless the 16 yr old has a liscense,he cant drive it. And 6 yr olds dont know how to operate i pods. yet.

I live off a never ending supply of gift money and gift cards. The only things I need are video games, and I get those as gifts, and if not then I have excess gift money and gift cards to buy what I want. Occassionally, I won't have any to buy what I want but those times seem to be right before Christmas or my birthday so my parents will buy it, but then I can't expect anything from them on the actual day (GCN which was a month before Christmas and AGB which was like four days before my birthday come to mind).

Anyway...I'm not spoiled. My parents don't buy everything for me. I just posses lots of gift cards and gift money. And...I don't ask for much. There are kids who carry like three MP3 players, phone and other gadgets all at one time. Or buy new things every yearr for the sake of having it. I just buy the games I want when I can. If I didn't have all these gift cards I wouldn't ask my parents to buy them. I'm happy with what I have, even if it's old.

I'd like my own real money though. I would have some by now if I finished up my swimming lessons during the school year, then I could be a swimming instructor right now. But I chose not to because I didn't want to be stressed out with that and school and I was hoping I could take the lessons in the summer, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. So, I HAVE TO do this next school year now. Wee~

I wouldn't want my parents to buy me car when I'm able to drive. The only thing I can see myself using a car for is driving to university and as good as that is, that seems like a waste of car. I'm also not looking forward to driving, I don't really care about it or have much of a desire to.

So, yeah. Not spoiled. Should have money by now, but I was stupid, but next year I will. Doesn't want a car. Lives off gift cards.

I like Erica's idea with the taxes thing. I think, anything educational parents should buy. Like there are toddlers with rooms full of useless toys, and then there are those with rooms full of educational toys. I think that an allowance should be given out at least 13. Once you're a teenager seems like a good time. There's nothign wrong with parents buying things for their children, but then there are those kids who have total control over their parents.

With chores...I don't do chores but I do help out. I don't get an allowance because we don't really understand the concept. Why should I get paid for keeping the house that I live in clean? It's like bribing, so I wouldn't except it anyway. I don't do the dishes or take out the trash or anything like that. My parents do those big things when I'm at school. I do make the bed, fold clothes, clear the table, set the tables, etc. The little chores, I occasionally vacuum too. But I don't think I should get paid for taking care of where I live.

As for the 16 year old w/ a car... My cousin (who is the same age as me) got a car some months ago. Even though its not new, but it's a used *good*, and kinda unpractical. My cousin (rumors around our family) is pretty spoiled. He has 6 grownups to spoil him, and he's the youngest in his family.

Anywho, I don't do much chores around the house... at least I do them. But I usually don't ask for anything. After reading this thread, I realized that... I should do my chores more. o.O;

I like Lighty's suggestion though... my mom never gave me an allowence, and that kinda halted my knowledge on how to spend sparingly. I think that after I got a job, then I knew how it is to earn money. I worked the whole school year for $400+, and thats the fee for our groceries, and not enough to pay one month of our rent. >>;

See, I honestly have no idea what a seven-year-old would do with a laptop, let alone a cell phone. If I had that kind of stuff when I was seven, I'd just lose it all the time and whatnot. (I'm bad enough at keeping my cell phone safe now as it is... and I'm sixteen!)

Parents who're like that just sicken me since their kids normally get so... irritating. They aren't doing them a favour. In addition to the lack of knowledge about spending money wisely, kids like that will probably just get shunned by their peers. For example, if one kid has everything and won't shut up about it, their friends will just get annoyed and start to ignore them out of jealousy or something like that. x_x;

...er, had more to say, but have to water plants. <_<

I supposed I'm one of those teenagers that get spoiled a fair bit. >_<

When I was younger I never used to have any of those great things like mobiles, computers or even a CD Player. It was tough on me since other kids had stuff that I could only dream of.
But when I got to the age of 12 I started to get the things that I really wanted, mostly as rewards for my high standard work in my classes and I suppose since that day the gifts have never stopped.

I get say, three DVDs and a book every week if I'm lucky and I suppose that's starting to make me feel bad for other kids that might not have things that I now have.
So everytime I get a gift I try to somehow give money and food to places that can then give those things to people that need it.
It makes me feel a lot better if I do that.

And now I'm even trying to save up for my own things, that why my mother won't have to buy me things all the time. =P

You must remember that, at that time, that sort of things represent a piece of advanced technology O_o .

Anyway, I don't think that I have been spoiled much. Maybe a few treats here and there, and some toys from my aunt (although one of them was completely destroyed by my uncle just after I received it... I WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU FOR ETERNITY SIXTH UNCLE!). However, if you want me to say, I would say that children in developed and advanced-developing cities (such as Singapore, Tokyo, New York, Sydney, London, Shanghai, Taipei and the like) are getting more and more spoiled. I'm not too sure about other cities, but in Singapore, children are spoiled to the point where they behave like emperors and empresses. They get spoiled on all fronts; they have things like branded clothes, the latest mobile phones (some even show it off by wearing it like some sort of tag on their front), expensive food, comfortable, oversized cars, and maids tagging along with them, serving their each and every demand (even helping them with basic things like clothing, food, and such). Their parents don't seem to care either, just spoiling them more and not caring about how they behave in public. They break every rule in the book about basic etiquette in puiblic. Pushing, shoving, queue-jumping, seat-hogging (on public transport for those without their own "personal limousine service"), bicker and complain about everything, have no patience, and expect everything to be delivered in an instant or they will make Mount Everests out of it. I do wonder if those parents do know who to raise a child properly. I shudder to think of what could happen to them when they step out into the real world and/or go into the military service (military service is compulsory here for all men at age 18 >.< ).

o.o I agree with younger children having mobiles to a certain extent, for example, in special circumstances. For example, when I moved from Nova Scotia to my current city, Toronto, it was a huge change. Toronto is much bigger than any city I'd ever lived in and we had to spend the first one or two weeks in the downtown core before we could move into our house. My mom was worried what might happen to me if I got lost, so they got me my phone for Christmas that year. Now I don't use it for emergencies or anything, since I'm older, but really that's all I had it for before now.

So, I think mobiles are okay for kids to have if they have overprotective parents or just for emergencies, etc. It's when you get them really amazing, overpriced phones that are completely unnecessary for a child that bugs me. o_O;

I lost my train of thought midway through that post and possibly even my main point. XD Oops.

Well I am kind of spoiled but not to much.

I have a car but I sharing it with my aunt who lives with us (It was her turn to wash it this week, mines is next week). We don't drive it much because niether one of use have a permit/linesce. The car was give to us by my parents to use as pratice and the car is used (1996?). It ok but I not complaining because once I can drive legally then that means not more rides back home when I stay late at school (Sweet!!) The thing is that I and my aunt have to pay for the insurance.

I have not Ipod, MP3, or cellphone. I have to borrow my dad's when ever I go on school trips.

I work to earn the money I have. Sometimes my dad gives me money if I ask him because I need it for trips or I really need something and it not for fun. My Xbox and Gamecube was give to me as gives but the games I had to buy with my money. I brougth my own GBA and it games. I really want a Pokemon E but I don't have the money so what I may do is buy it used. I know who hard life is and how fast money can go.

What gets me mad is how spoiled kids can be because of their parents. My job is to cut yards with my dad. (decent pay I guess since he and my mom do pay the bills) I hate it that I have to cut a yard and I see some 10-18 year old kid outside or inside and they not cutting this yard. I been cutting yards since i was 9 and here is this kid who can't spend 30 min to cut his own yard. What does he do that make him so tired to cut his own yard. There are many ways to spoil a child then buying them stuff.

My brother I think is being spoiled and he is about 3. But he getting punishment too. My mom bried him to be toiet train by promising him a power ranger toy. (A simple one too.) He got train in a few months. The thing that gets me mad about him is when we at a store and he sees a toy like batman or something and he wants it but my mom does get it for him and sometime she does. I young and got a long way to go.

I little midget at 6 does not need an Ipod/CD player (unless it for medical reasons). I taller midget kid at 10 does not need a cell phone. A teen at 15 or so kind of need a car and cellphne but they need to pay for the thing and pay the mineuts. If the cell and car was given to them then the kid needs to pay the insureance and the cell bill. An Ipod is to much for a parent to buy for their kid (unless the kid is like 30 and he left the house and has his own hause and career.) The Ipod, if the kid really want want it, they buy it themself.

Like my mom and dad say, "You areciate somthing more if you buy it yourself." It is true. I brougth my GBA with my own money and I don't want to get rid of it for the DS. (I still going to get the Ds but I buying it unless my parents get it for my b-day and I don't know. Dobt it thougth.)

The funny thing about temporary is that you never know if it is actually temporary or permanent.
