Hey let's talk abt Pokémon skeletons! I bet a lot of them're pretty wack.

Like, most ghost types probably don't even have bones? But Cohagrigus' 'dex says "they swallow those who get too close and turn them into mummies." Does that mean they sometimes are wandering around with human skeletons inside them? Could, at that point, the human skeleton be considered part of them?
I'm sure most bug types probably have exoskeletons, so that's just a wack bug shell. But maybe some of them have bones. Which ones? Do Voltrob and Electrode have bones, or do you think they've got exoskeletons?
Does Pichu grow more finger bones upon evolution to Pikachu, only to lose them again on evolution to Raichu?
Is Cottonee basically just a skull?

Let's figure some of this out y'all

I think of the Voltorb line to be some kind of round Frankenstein battery more than a living thing. Regarding bug pokemon I think they only have exoskeletons, tbh I can't think of any that could have a skeleton, except maybe for Buzzwole...? :thonk:
If there are pokemon that actually have me intriged in this matter, they are Pawniard and Bisharp, are those things in their torax their ribs or are the actual bones hidden in their black torso? And are the blades actually bones?

pokemon anatomy is one of those things that's like...it'd be stating the obvious to say that it's complicated, because obviously the franchise isn't designed to be this overthought, but like... it really leaves one to wonder. like, object pokemon don't really have skeletons, i dont think (like klefki), so their skeletal anatomy isn't the same as say, something we're more accustomed to seeing like more quadruped, animal-like pokemon. there's also some others that kind of raise question marks like grimer/muk.. what's the deal with both of them too? and slugma and magcargo as well. @[email protected] really something to think about.

It's a superb topic to discuss!!
Pokemon that are have really weird anatomy, in my opinion, are ...let me think, i never really wondered because they have magic ghost types and certain steel types. No amount of biological presence, like cells, organelles, etc. seem to exist on them. Of course, ghosts are metaphysical, but consider steel types like Bronzor, Magnemite, Metagross. They don't seem to have bones in them at all. In fact, they seem to be made entirely out of metals. How then, are they functioning?

Now that this topic arose, i wonder what's the inside of a Pokemon like? If certain Pokemon, like Bidoof, which have plain, simply recognizable, similar to real world biology, can generate elemental powers, then it is possible that the Pokemon's soul, rather than the body itself, hold power over the elements. So what would you all think? Again, there are those, like Muk, Swalot, etc like Colours said. WHat's the deal with them?

well, i'd imagine mammalian pokemon would at the very least, have skeletons but damn @ cohagrigus's pokedex entry, that's creepy.

But, yeah, I'd like to at least think Pokémon have biological anatomy similar to their real world animal counterparts...although I'm pretty sure Ghost types (That aren't the Yamask line) and inanimate object Pokémon definitely don't have skeletons. I don't wanna think about that. The Hamburger Helper meme with the bones was enough for me.

So, if we say they're bones, does that then imply a) steel type Pokémon have bones made of steel or b) steel-types have no need for bones because they are supported by their own steel? And does B mean that steel-types have, effectively, exoskeletons?

Since slugs don't have bones, I would suspect that Slugma/Magcargo don't either. But Grimer/Muk aren't really slugs, so much. So do they maybe have like, free-floating bones? Although that begs the question of "why" (vestigial?) and "how do they not dissolve in its own acid?"

It's a superb topic to discuss!!

<3
I feel like the elemental powers may have had some effect on Pokémon's biology, but a lot of them still have a base body and maybe therefore an implied internal structure? Swalot, somehow, I feel like has some sort of skeletal structure. It just seems more... stiff? than Muk or Magcargo. But it's still very squishy, I think, so how much of its structure is fat-on-muscle as opposed to bone?

I don't have much to say but

How many skeletons can it have in at once? What happens if it dies with a bunch of skeletons in, what would an archaeologist think about that? Can ghost types even die? They can faint, certainly. But like, can they just... dissipate and move on? Leaving some kind of remains?

Now there are tons of speculations to make! I wonder, there are many games which have creatures referencing the real life creatures, but the developers do not think of the deeper biology that can be associated with them. An example is the recent rapid fire with Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori that Game Informer conducted. They didn't give the biology much of a thought. So, is anyone hoping for a skeleton-like Pokemon for Sword and Shield? (Like, an entire skeleton and not just a few bone(s), like Cubone)

I think that could deppend on the pokemon, like I really doubt Empoleon has an exoskeleton, it could have the skin and feathers of a normal penguin but its wings evolved in some way that they are hard and sharp as a blade. Aggron on the other hand could have its armor be both a rock and steel exoskeleton if that even makes sense. Excadrill has the body of a normal mole, but its claws are made of steel and its horn if can call it that way is the same as a Narwhal probably, a bone that grew incorrectly, basically

Does anyone else imagine Diglett having just one small bone sitting in it's body? Because I do.

Dugtrio has three bones, right? But what about their legs, hands or stomach or the entire remaining body?!?!
And grass types like carnivine, roserade, morelull, etc. don't appear to have skeletons, nor exoskeletons. They have a rigid cell wall to support themselves, methinks.
Drifloon is hollow, well it may be filled with air.But it can carry children away to the afterlife!! Ghost types have some nasty pokedex descriptions. I do't even know what i'm typing, but it is Halloween, so...

I don't like the implication that Diglett/Dugtrio dont have skulls...

That's a good point tho Sid! That a lot of plant-based Pokémon probably support themselves in that way rather than have skeletons. But others like Turtwig line and Whimsicott probably have a skeleton?

Turtwig, Whimsicott, Bulbasaur, their appearance is similar to the creatures who have skeletons. Each Pokemon type has some Pokemon that may have skeletons and some that don't. Now the ghost types are again, the oddest of them all. Many ghost types feel either like gas/clouds/floating blobs (Gastly line, Duskull line) or something hollow, with an outer covering(Mimikyu, Drifloon).
By the way, just Google 'pokemon skeletons'. Trust me, the results are nice.
