OFFEN. I made a thread like this about the beginning of the year. It was on the word OUR though.

I say it as "offen". No need to add a "t" sound because it just makes more work, and more work sucks. XD

Often. I don't plan on ever changing the way I say it, even if I would try it'd be rather hard since I've said it that way for years. (also doesn't help with everyone else I know saying ''often'' constantly. ๑_๑ )

I pronounce it "offen" too :) Though I think very occasionally I might pronounce it "often" if I'm putting a lot of stress on the word. ^_^

The T is NOT silent! O_O; *slowly reveals grammer hammer from behind back*

I've never said offen, and the only people around here who I hear say it are hardcore southerners...maybe it's a regional thing o_O

A word can't be any harder to pronounce if the established version has the same abount of syllables =.=

Often is the newer version of the old word "oft", which also meant "Many times at short intervals". That was most certainly not pronounced "off", and if it's pronounced "offen" anywhere, it's just from generations of people incorrectly doing so.

Most people around here don't say "oil" they say "orl". Does that make it so?

Guys, read this and this. It's both.

I imagine it was originally pronounced with the T, but over the years its degenerated into "offen" due to sheer laziness on the part of humanity. :\ I myself use "often" because that's how I was taught to say it. Actually, I never even noticed that other people pronounce it differently until it was brought up here, and now I can sort of place other people saying it differently at some point.

Really, I think it sounds better with the T. :P
