Razor Wind sounds like a flying move. I don't understand why it is a normal type.

Draco Meteor and Twister seem like they should be switched between Flying and Dragon type. Also, Eerie Impulse sounds like it might be a Ghost type move, but is actually Electric. And for some reason, Pyukumuku's Purify is a Poison type move, even though that seems the opposite of what a move of that type would do.

hey, VisionofMilotic, did you know that razor wind's original name is kamaitachi? also, why isn't rock climb a rock move?
Because climbing up rocks is an activity, and it's shown that Pokemon use their claws to climb up rocks. It's Normal type because of that.

Draco Meteor and Twister seem like they should be switched between Flying and Dragon type.
Twister is a Dragon type move because the Japanese name has the word Dragon in it. So the move being Dragon is really only confusing in English because of that.

Here's a entomology note on Bulbapedia about it:

The Japanese name of Twister, たつまき (竜巻) Tatsumaki, literally means "dragon spiral", and refers to the belief that dragons spiral around themselves to form the shapes of twisters.
Anyway, Mega Punch and Mega Kick being Normal type moves is pretty weird. But maybe there's a reason they're not Fighting type.

yeah, Purify sounds like a fairy-type move. cause fairy is basically like the magical girl genre and magical girls in works of that genre purify objects possessed by monsters.

for rock climb, why isn't it ground or fighting? a lot of pokemon of those types learn the move. for twister, that's still no reason since all descriptions mentions tornadoes and twisters. and the dragon-type's Japanese name was still just the english word in katakana. and yeah, mega punch and mega kick, I agree. but why is Sweet Scent normal? when I hear the words "sweet scent", I think of perfume. and what type is the perfume pokemon? fairy. quite a lot of the pokemon that can learn it are in the fairy egg group. so it should be fairy, not normal.

Rock Climb is normal because it's just regular average Rock Climbing. Definitely no needed nor implied typing here.

Mega Punch and Mega Kick could definitely be implied to be fighting, and would be really useful if they were, but they're also just regular, average, Normal moves.

I thought Rock Climb was a rock move and I excitedly gave it to my Rampardos because I needed a decent stab rock move.

Then it was Normal. I was clumsy and didn't check. And it already had strength. And I saved my file and wasn't at a point where I could reach a move deleter.

Yeah, definitely the Mega Punch and Mega Kick for me...which makes me think about Comet Punch as well. Though obviously not every "Punch" move is fighting, since there are elemental punches yadda yadda. But as a kid I always wondered why these moves were not Fighting-type.

What makes Dragon Ascent even more confusing is that the Japanese name has "画竜" or "painted dragon" in the name, so its not just a translation quirk.

I find Withdraw to be confusing, as a Water-type move. Shouldn’t it be Normal-type? I know it was originally made for Squirtle, but...

Steamroller, Megahorn, First Impression, X-Scissor, U-Turn, and Signal Beam are all Bug-type moves. Something about that just seems really, really odd.

why is spikes a ground move?
Possibly because the spikes are thrown at, well, the ground.

But then theres the thing that barely any Ground mons can actually learn Spikes.
I… might put something interesting here eventually.

First Impression. Like...what does that even mean? And why is it a Bug type move?? I know it used to be the sig move for Golisopod, but that honestly doesn't answer any questions for me lol.

I suppose that many Bug type attacks were just given that type because Bugs needed more attacks and that's it.

What confuses me more are some status moves, like why is Wide Guard a Rock type move, or Coil a Poison type move.
Or why is Agility a Psychic move? It relaxes the body, so it has nothing to do with psychic powers, and in fact most of the Pokémon that learn Agility have literally nothing to do with the Psychic type. I mean, the type is irrelevant for most status moves, but still, it feels so random :)

I think the implication is that the person is using ESP to get faster. Like some shounen manga will have the main characters use chi / chakra / whatever to move faster / walk on walls / walk on water / etc.

Not sure about Coil or Wide Guard though, I think it's either a "Let's throw it there for variety's sake", some arcane byte packing technique (these moves were released in the DS after all) or GF just had a specific Pokemon in mind when making the move and gave it that type so it looked more signature-y.

to me this actually opens up another discussion (might have to make a separate thread): what if we just get rid of typings for non damaging moves? would it affect the meta in anyway?

Kinda? Some abilities rely on the typing of status moves, but it's not a particularly big deal.
The biggest change I can see is the fact that Thunder Wave starts hitting Ground types, which is a bit annoying since it's already overused as is.
