I think I may have figured out an easy way to get things straight when hanging them from a wall. Like if you’re trying to hang shelves or a picture or whatever. What you do is put something flat against the wall, like a table. Then sit the item you want to hang on top of the table up against the wall. Then you take a tape measurer and measure up the sides of the item, pulling the tape measurer all the way up to the height you wish to hang the item. Then where the tape measurer stops at on each side at the top you make a little mark with a marker or something and that’s where the nails go in.

sadly I'll probably not be able to test this out for a while since we'll likely be renting for a while (and therefore no permission to put nails in the wall), but good to keep in mind for the future!!

I think they also have laser levels that you stick to the wall to make them straight. I personally love a good chaotic wall.

You could also just use a $5 spirit level.
However, I appreciate the ingenuity in towards the goal of having things actually be straight on the wall. It is something we should all strive for because crooked paintings/posters/etc are infuriating.
