Er...
I've been thinking about this a lot in the past few days...

Could we have a user group that fixes up grammatical mistakes? And maybe even have the power to change titles?

Some posts, are really hard to read coz of the spelling mistakes etc.

Any comments are welcome.

I wish. XD
But there isn't anything we can do about grammatical mistakes. It's all up to the member to "try" to get better on it. Even if we make a usergroup for them, I don't think they'll improve.
And we also don't got anything that can fix grammatical mistakes. Other then David. XD

Also, fixing their mistakes for them won't help them improve, but rather they'll get worse, since they'll rely on others to correct everything.
Oh yeah... Good point...
I wish I thought of that.

I think that would be a fun idea, even if it's impractical. Unfortunatly, it would be a nearly impossibly task as nearly everybody has horrible grammar. However, if anything like this ever did go through, I'd love to help. I'm known on my other forum (where I have admin powers to modify posts) as the "grammar gestapo." Mwahaha. Anyway, I don't think it'd work, but I would really enjoy it. If you wanted them to get better, you could reintroduce the rep system and give them bad rep if their posts had to be modified. That would probably make everybody really mad... Nevermind...

Considering they'd have to make an Admin/Spelling Errors group for me, the concept otherwise would probably be a challenege to install due to the fact who would have to police it...

As a mod with a special distaste for bad grammar and spelling, if this would actually work I would be in favor for it, but as other people have said it's impractical and would end up having a negative effect on our more english-challenged members abilities to fix their own errors. I will admit to changing some rather abominable posts in OVP on occasion, but I've only done this when I know the person is a chronic misspeller and basically has no hope of changing. I even have a rule in OVP now encouraging good english skills, as so many people have been spelling simple words and not using any punctuation whatsoever as of late. I just hope people listen if they know I care =/

This isn't school.. no points are awarded for good spelling and/or grammer.. Although members should always strive for a readable post, it's not required, nor should it be.

Well... I can't believe nobody has mentioned this yet... would people really like to have some random people going around and editing their posts all over if they have grammatical mistakes? :/

I have noticed many times that some posts are completely and totally not understandable. If a Special Mod was to edit these kinds of posts and they editted them in the wrong way the original poster would be VERY mad.

There would be a need for MANY grammactically correct people because grammar/spelling errors aren't specifically reserved to one area. As you know they are extremely widespread. It would eventually be to hard to handle for just a small group of people.

Lets just let the original posters take care of thier own mistakes, and the mods take care of mistakes when they are lead to.

^^^ To a few of the above posters:

(in size one, (to show my humility and deferrence) because I'm scared of angering the admins ._.; )

Of course we shouldn't force good grammar on anyone, but I wish that we could at least encourage good spelling and grammar habits. It's a proven fact that the internet has worsened the average child's spelling, and I just wish that less people would abide that, especially here where the majority of people have problems spelling simple words correctly. I wonder if a lot of people here are encouraged to make such bad english choices because they see it as acceptable here. I think that we should at least have a rule encouraging good spelling and grammar, but even I would be opposed to a rule enforcing it, as enticing as that would be. I just wish there was some way we could steer people toward the right track. This place may be injuring a child academically for life and we don't even know it...most people don't care about the rules anyway, unfortunately, but if we can at least make a few people feel that it's incumbent upon them to mind their own typing, we'll have made PC a better place.

I'm not saying we should enact ways to encourage people, I'm just saying that I wish it was possible. There's a huge difference there.

Well I wouldn't see a rule doing much good. Even more so if it's more like a guideline then a rule. And if you tell them to do better on their grammar they won't. David can tell you better because he used to be the RP Mod and he ran into that stuff all the time.
I agree with Kaga on this might hurt them down the road in life.
And I also agree with Steve that PC isn't a school.
I would like to see better from some of the worst grammar members, but I don't see it happening.

Eh, won't that be simply a SMod member, with only Mod powers to edit posts?

Not a bad idea IMO. And yes, if they see someone continuously posting like weird, they can suspend the user or something, or PM another mod for it.

*high fives* I'm glad someone else noticed.

But that's kind of invasive...whats to stop the people from editing the whole post...it's not really our duty to stop people from typos >_O

But he's not referring to typos; he's referring to instances when people honestly don't know which "where" to use (wear/where) and spell it incorrectly regardless. x_x It happens too often here.

Anyway, going with the majority, this wouldn't really work. I agree with Dakota, that's rather invasive and, although in short term it may make peoples' posts more understandable, in long term it really won't help them. I wouldn't mind PMing people every so often if they're grammar is a total mess, just asking them to improve so that people can actually *read* their posts. It wouldn't be enforced thru PC's official rules, but it's something anyone can do, really. ^_^;

I believe most of you misunderstand this thread. Rather than targeting people who have poor English skills, I think coolmaster was referring to the people who use chatspeak and other variations of it. Obviously, since this is a forum, it's not a good thing to use.

A usergroup for that would be nice, but honestly, anybody who goes around eyeing chatspeak has too much time on their hands. Yes, that's coming from me, the one who used to spend every waking hour (whilst away from school) on PC.

As for a rule... mmm, that works. I personally would like one. wen pplz typ like diz, it gets really annoying, and the more English-oriented members (like me) tend to ignore that person. I'm not sure about you, but if a person isn't willing to take the time to make sense out of their posts, I wouldn't be willing to take the time to read them.

In other words, a dedicated moderating group for it is... overkill, to say the least. But asking people to not make sloppy, incomprehendable posts isn't going to hurt anybody, ne?

In my honest opinion, I think this has some good aspects and bad ones. As someone said, I believe Yukito, that this isnt Grammer School. That's true, it seems impposibe to make a group to go around a check almost every post for grammatical errors and spelling errors. I believe that every member (including myself) just needs to make an effort to watch their spelling and typing. I mean a group sounds like a good idea, but when put into to reality, it will become chaos.
