Noone could do it in under 50 minutes. It takes about 10 minutes each world or something like that. I got at least 2 hrs non stop.

Perhaps a little more than 20 min for most people (myself included) when using the warp whistles. The last world takes me a while *keeps dieing*. But under an hour, without question.

There was a faked video of under 11 min! It was fake, but I'm sure that someone really talented could pull that off.

Back during the days of when I played nothing but the NES, I could beat Mario 3 in under an hour.

Maybe around 40-60 minutes, depending on how much I die. That is always a factor.

It's possible to do it in under 20 minutes. You just warp to World 8 from World 1. Granted, you'll be short on items, but you can then get through the game in the allotted time from there.

I beat it in 27 minutes by getting Fire Mario early on and using him all the way up until Bowser's Castle, where I used one of my Leaves. Then it was just traditional kill Bowser.

They SAY it's possible to do it in under 20 minutes:

But, since this was proven to be fake and rigged, it's gotten down to rumors again.

Shame too, it's like Neo playing SMB3...

I got the game when it first came out in North America, heck I still even have the Nintendo power with it showcasing the new Mario 3 game at the time, but I don't think I ever beat it, I might've but if I did I honestly can't remember. I know I beat Mario 2 though, which I find more fullfilling since most people seem to school Mario 3 since it was such a hit.
