Hmm... I agree with you on "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. I really liked how he sang it as if he's really narrating his life to the listener. I haven't really heard the NIN version but "Hurt" is a pretty sad song.

"Strawberry Field Forever" was sad? I guess it was a happy go lucky song but yeah... I'll listen to Mystery Tour again... lol

as for me:

"Do You Realize??" by The Flaming Lips
- A happy tune but a really sad message to me. You have to appreciate that some people look beautiful when they're young and eventually everyone will die and not a lot of people will remember the beauty of the person that you've loved.

"Such Great Heights" by Iron and Wine
-The Postal Service was a little upbeat but it's still an awesome version. But the Iron and Wine version is a lot touching and a lot more heartfelt. Plus, it's an awesome song from the Garden State soundtrack.

"Under the Gun" by the Killers
"Mr. Brightside" was too cheerful for me. But I guess "Under the Gun" was cheerful, too. But it's kind of sad, especially the message of the song. I feel sorry for the guy. Also, this song replaces Brightside from my favorite Killers song. I try not to overlisten to it because I might get sick of it. (Like Mr. Brightside).

"One" by U2
Oooh... angsty. I really love that biting angst that U2 has in this song. It's not that corny stupid teen angst that some bands have *cough*. It's a very nice and silent angst and almost sublime, too. The lyrics, the music, it's all so sad. One of my favorite songs to play in my guitar, too. ;D

"I'm Lonely (but I Ain't That Lonely Yet)" by The White Stripes
It sounds a lot like "Changes" by Black Sabbath but I like this song for some reason. I really love the lyrics and the piano makes a really nice and touching effect to the song. Speaking of piano...

"The Scientist" by Coldplay
Well, I don't really like what's Coldplay doing now... but I really like this song back then when they had AROBTTH. Very nice and touching song. Nice video, too.

Remember that "sad" is different that "depressing"
I'm just browsing through my music and these come to mind:
  • Neutral Milk Hotel "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea"
  • Pink Floyd "The Great Gig In The Sky"
  • Radiohead "Motion Picture Soundtrack"
Sounds like a funeral, but yet uplifting. The chorus of "I think you're crazy/maybe" is accompanied by a beautiful harp.
  • Radiohead "The Tourist"
I read that this is about tourists so hurried to take in the magnificence of Paris that they miss the point entirely. "Hey man/Slow Down//Idiot/Slow Down."
  • Smashing Pumpkins "Spaceboy"
A song about Billy's brother, to whom he was a father figure. Acoustic gutair and strings, with a crooning of "Spaceboy, they'll kill me/before I'm dead and gone."

Well, out of my playlists I came up with these.

Evanescence - Missing
Not only is the rythm pretty slow and in its self pretty sad but the lyrics just kill. I mean really kill. I have to say this is the only song that has ever made me cry.

The Synthetic Dream Foundation - It's Too Late (Apparation's Mix)
Just like 'Missing' it has a soft melody but this song is even softer and the classical instruments add more of a sad atmosphere to it. The lyircs themselves speak of being too late for some event and since it does not project a situation you as the listener can imagine any situation you have ever been that makes you sad.

Eh, that all I could think of as of now.

I only have one.

When I'm Gone by Eminem
Em in this song talks about not having enough time for his daughter (I give one underdog and you gotta swing by yourself). The part in the near-end about Em lying to Hailie's just.....sad. And the lyrics "I turn around/Find a gun on the ground/**** it/Put it to my brain/scream "God Shady!"/And pop it" are even sadder.

Eh...

Everybody's Fool [Evanescence]- It's more of a song expressing an opinion, but I still find it very touching. Being lied to, put down...You can really relate to it.

Where Will You Go [Evanescence]- If you read the lyrics, you can most definitely tell. I actually cried in class because of it. o_o; Yeah.

My Immortal [Evanescence]- Need I say more? I think most people have heard this song, and it depresses the heck out of me.

Wake Me Up When September Ends [Green Day]- I find it depressing that people make fun of this song. No one cares to think about what this song truly is about. If you cared to read the lyrics, it's about Billie Joe's dad, who died when Billie was only 10 of esophagus cancer. Whenever I hear a live version I burst into tears. o_o

Time Of Your Life [Green Day]- I find this an extremely inspirational song, and the lyrics are pretty powerful.

End [Useless I.D.]- No, you shouldn't know this band. They're an Israeli Punk band, though I do recommend them. It's a very short song, but the melody and lyrics combined are extremely depressing.

Fields of Agony [No Use For A Name]- Sad, sad, lyrics.

No, I'm not back, I'm just laughing at the mediocrity of corrupted 'authority'. <3

I'd have to say "Here Without You" by Three Doors Down. When I listen to it, I get the feeling that this guy is really lonely, and he's missing his girlfriend. I feel like that often, and it's a song I can relate to. I feel depressed when I'm alone, and I can see the meaning of this song.
I have, I have you breathing down my neck, breathing down my neck
I don't, don't know what you could possibly expect under this condition so
I'll wait, I'll wait for the ambulance to come, ambulance to come
Pick us up off the floor what did you possibily expect under this condition so
Slow down, this nights a perfect shade of
Dark blue, dark blue
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room while I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning and burning down
Dark blue, dark blue
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room while I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning 'til there's nothing but dark blue
Just dark blue
And this flood, this flood is slowly rising up, swallowing the ground
Beneath, my feet. Tell me how anybody thinks under this condition so
I'll swim, I'll swim as the water rises up sun is sinking down and now
All I can see are the planets in a row suggesting it's best that I slow down this nights a perfect shade of
Dark blue, dark blue
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room while I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning and burning down
Dark blue, dark blue
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room while I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning dark blue

I have a lot of others, but those are some of the first I could think of.
