This thread shall tell you all you need to know about Monthly Sprite/Pixel Art contests that have been held almost every month so far. Guidelines for if you wish to host a contest and a Hall of Fame displaying 1st place winners of former monthly contests. Made especially for those who seem to be a little confused on the topic of contests like these.

About Contests
-------------------------------------------------------------
Monthly Sprite Contests had started being held ever since 2004, and have continued ever since. Basically, such contests like these have always provided a specific theme for spriters/pixel artists to follow by. First place winner gets their winning entry up on display in the Hall of Fame (which used to have a seperate thread of its own)
"Home of the Sprites" was the original name for the sub-forum, and only recently it had a name change to "Pixel Art"
Before the name change, Home of the Sprites was more of a Sprite-related sub-forum rather than a completely pixel related one. Hence the reason why we only had mostly "Sprite Contests" rather than regular Pixel Art-based contests, though Pixel Art was still allowed during Sprite Contests. Because the name change was quite recent, it's best for you to know about this to avoid any confusion. You shall be seeing more Pixel Art related contests in the future rather than simple Sprite related ones; but regardless; their concept has never changed, contests have always a theme for entrants to abide by.
The results of each and every contest shall give each entrant feedback on their entries; to state how well they've done and what can be there to improve on.

Hosting a Contest
-------------------------------------------------------------
So, you've seen other people host contests before, and you're interested in hosting one yourself?
The main rules are:
Always Private Message a moderator of the Pixel Art sub-forum for their permission to host a contest. If you make one without the approval of a Mod, then it will be closed.
Only 1 Contest per month. 2 or more are not allowed to run at the same time.
Hosting a contest isn't as simple as some of you may think. It requires responsibility and cautiousness. A mod needs to see if you have the capabilities to host a contest, and shall ask you to do certain things in order to prove how elligible you may be. They would normally ask you for/to:
Basically it, you are allowed to copy and paste rules that were already in former contest threads if you are unsure of what to state as rules of the contest.
If you've still got a few questions or concerns you'd like to ask about, then feel free to PM me and I'll try to attend to them as soon as I can.

- A theme for the contest
Every Contest we've had so far has had a specific theme to it, for instance, February's theme was Valentines, where entrants were needed to make entries relating to that topic. If you fail to think up a certain type of theme, then you'll find it difficult to host the contest; or perhaps you may not be able to host one at all.
- Contest opening and closure
When the contest starts and when it shall end. Most preferably; the contest should start at the beginning of the following month and at the end.
- Choose judges wisely, do not make just anyone judges just because they happen to be your friends
Judges aren't necessarily required in order for a contest to be held. But if you think you're going to be needing some help in running the contest and judging the entries, then I'd recommend that you have atleast 2 or 3 judging the contest along with you.
Right now, judges who are able to provide criticism and good comments on each and every entry willing to be entered is crucial, don't make somebody a judge solely because they happen to be a friend of yours, try for people who are known to be detailed when giving out comments on certain pixel work.
- Are you sure you are confident enough to host the contest?
If you're not willing to take any responsibility for any rule-breaking that may go on during the contest, as well as promote good judges, then you're not fit enough to host it. So make sure you revise through necessary aspects first before considering hosting a month's contest. It can be a lot harder than it looks.
Basically it, you are allowed to copy and paste rules that were already in former contest threads if you are unsure of what to state as rules of the contest.
If you've still got a few questions or concerns you'd like to ask about, then feel free to PM me and I'll try to attend to them as soon as I can.
