Alright, I have decided to share with you a story our English class had to write. It's an "allegorical story" which means that basically a character learns a lesson. Well...I'm not sure about the exact definition...but I believe that's what our teacher told us...I don't pay attention so I wouldn't really know anyhow. Anyway, feel free to give comments and criticism...mainly criticism since I'm psyched about starting up some fanficts that I've kind of...*cough* neglected...Anyway, I just hope you guys enjoy ^^; Btw, since this thing is incredibly long, I shall have to make two posts in order for you guys to see all of it. *cough* Well, enjoy again! ^^;;

It's Only a Little Bad Luck

"The devil's date is coming up next week. What do you think might happen?" Sakura asked.

"I have no idea, but on a once in a lifetime date like this, it's nothing good, that's for sure," Rika stated.

"You two are so annoying with your stupid beliefs about the "devil number" and such. None of that stuff is real. Can't you just drop it? June 6, 2006 is a regular day just like any other day," Koji explained with a tone obviously full of annoyance.

"Well, excuse us for believing in something. You should start believing in things too or you might regret it one day," Sakura replied with irritation.

Koji scorned at her and walked off, leaving the two girls and the rest of his classmates to whisper to themselves. He never believed in superstitions or omens or hardly anything ever since the tragic car accident his parents were in. He decided that there was no real god since no one was able to save his parents. All he had left of his family was his little sister, Karin, but even she believed in superstitions and at times, she would be an annoyance to him with her silly little beliefs over little things such as, broken mirrors and a black cat walking by. But still, Koji cared for his sister and he would never allow anyone to harm her as long as he was around.

Class started and everyone took their seats as the teacher wrote down the lessons for the day and took attendance. The class went by slower than usual, but no one else seemed to notice it except Koji. After the first few classes of the day went by, the bell that signaled lunch, rang and everyone headed outside. Koji sat where he usually did for lunch, under the purple-colored tree that never seemed to lose its leaves no matter what season it was. He wondered about this when he first noticed it in the beginning of his high school year. But now as a junior, he hadn't put much thought into it anymore and allowed the tree to let it be as it was. Koji took a bite of his deliciously fresh sandwich that his sister had offered to make for him and smiled at the thought of her. Even though she was starting her first year in junior high, she was a rather intelligent child for her age.

After lunch, the last few classes finally ended. Koji started on his way towards his sister's school to go pick her up. The walk was rather eerie since it seemed much quieter than it usually was, but he managed to make it to his sister's school without any problems. He sat on the grass and waited for her to cheerfully come up and greet him like she usually did so he could take her home, but after waiting twenty minutes, he grew worried and immediately ran to the office.

"I am looking for my sister, Karin!" he stated between his panting.

The woman behind the desk looked at him quite shocked at his anxiousness and tried to calm him down to explain what happened.

"Karin is in the nurse's office now. She sprained her ankle while she was walking out of her class," she explained.

Koji felt relieved, but he was still worried of how she was doing and he quickly made his way to the nurse's office.

"Hello, big brother," Karin greeted him with a smile.

"It's good to see you're alright," he said with a look of relief and sat down next to her. "I heard what happened, but explain this. How were you able to sprain your ankle if you were only walking out of your class? Did you run like you weren't supposed to?"

She shook her head, "No. It was because of the black cat!"

Koji closed his eyes in frustration and reiterated her words, "Because of the black cat?"

She nodded, "That's right! It passed by me and as I was walking out, I felt a sharp pain in my ankle and I fell down."

Koji shook his head and simply stated, "There is no way a black cat would just cause you to get a sprained ankle.

"But a black cat walking by you is a symbol of bad luck!" she argued.

"Stop mentioning the bad luck nonsense. You either ran or it was because of some freak accident that you got your ankle sprained, but it wasn't because of some stupid black cat!"

Karin flinched at his tone of voice and Koji noticed this and sighed.

"I'm sorry, Karin," he apologized.

"No. I'm sorry. You're right, It's not because of the black cat, I guess I was just walking too fast is all."

Karin still believed it was the black cat that caused her sprained ankle, but she doesn't want to argue with her brother because of how much he had done for her. Arguing with him would just be disrespectful. Koji just nodded and they both decided not to say anything else. They walked home, but it took longer than usual since Koji had to assist Karin because of her current state. After finally getting home, Koji decided that he should get a car as soon as possible because a walk like that was definitely tiresome. After the event that happened earlier, neither of them spoke to each other. During their dinner, they both remained quiet until Koji spoke up first.

He cleared his throat before he began to apologize again, "Karin, I really am sorry for how I talked to you earlier."

Karin looked up with her mouth slightly open from surprise, but replied, "Like I said before big brother, you don't have to apologize. I guess it's my fault for giving you such an unbelievable reason like that. I shouldn't say stuff like that. After all, I am thirteen now and I shouldn't be talking as if I'm still in elementary school."

He nodded and began feeling as if his apology was meaningless and so he returned to eating his dinner. The rest of the night was deadly quiet until they exchanged their good nights and headed for bed. Neither could sleep most of the night because both were pondering over the black cat and wondering if it really was an omen.

Soon after, it was morning and they returned to their daily routine. Koji walked to his high school once he dropped off his sister at her school and pondered once again until he finally shrugged it off.

"Only three more days until Friday. I can't believe the devil's number will be here so soon! I'm scared!" Sakura whined.

Rika rolled her eyes, "Oh please. You are acting like the devil is going to come out and get you. Some random bad event will happen is all. It'll probably be on the news and everyone will remember it, but that's all. You just better hope you don't let your guard down on that day is all, no big deal."

Koji walked by the two girls and noticed them gossiping about Friday being the worst possible day of the year just because it stands for the devil's number. Koji grew irritated, but decided to keep silent and walked pass them, that is, until Rika had to open her big mouth.

"Well, if it isn't the nonbeliever. What's wrong? You still don't believe in bad luck or what? I mean, everyone else does and triple six being on a Friday and all...isn't that just freaky to you, at all?" she asked with obvious sarcasm.

Koji sighed, not wanting to socialize, if you can call it that, with some arrogant girl like Rika was, but he had no choice.

"It's not because of that. I don't believe in any of that pathetic nonsense you call an omen because it's only a superstition. It's not real and nothing will happen to anyone. It's all in your mind! But then, I never really believed in anything to begin with, such as there being arrogant losers, but there is you, so now I believe there are some out there," he stated with a slight glare before walking away.

Rika stood there, mouth agape and tensed up. "How dare he says that to me so rudely!" she growled and stormed away in the opposite direction.

The day went by slowly as it did the day before, but it quickly went by after lunch. Like the day before, he went to pick up his sister at school and sat down and waited. Not long after, he realized she has been there for a long time and so he ran into the office like the before and asked the woman behind the desk where she was. She replied that Karin is in the nurse's office like before, but this time, she stepped on some broken glass as she was getting out from PE and they were still trying to remove the piece out of her foot. Koji rushed over to the nurse's office and saw the nurse still trying to remove the piece of glass from her foot.

"How did this happen?" he asked worriedly with anger.

"I broke the mirror that was in the bathroom. It came loose and it fell and I was trying to get out, but I slipped on some water and I stepped on a piece of glass," she explained with a strained _expression as the nurse continued to try to remove the glass.

The glass was too small to be seen which gave the nurse a lot of trouble of trying to remove it, but they soon got it out and Karin and Koji made their way home. Like the night before, neither of them could sleep, but Karin fell asleep before her brother did. He pondered over the broken mirror and the black cat from the day before.

"Maybe it is true? No..there is no such thing as bad luck," Koji stated before yawning and falling asleep.

Koji made his way to school again and heard the students counting the last two days before Friday and he decided to ignore them. The classes didn't go by any faster than they had been the last couple of days and after school, Koji made his way to the middle school to pick up his sister like before and like before, Karin hadn't come out like she usually would and so he decided to talk to the same woman behind the desk again.

She simply said, "Nurse's office," with an irritating look on her face, but he decided to ignore her and made his way to the other office again. He peeked in and saw someone lying on the bed and immediately rushed inside.

"What happened?" he asked, wanting an immediate answer.

"Shhh," the nurse calmed him, "your sister is asleep. She was--"

The nurse wasn't able to finished because Karin woke up and Koji rushed over to her.

"I'm sorry big brother. I was in charge of lunch duty today and I spilled the salt. I went over to clean it up, but I slipped on the soup that spilled earlier and I guess I fainted," she explained as she felt the bump on her head.

"Come on, let's go," he coldly said as he forcefully pulled her off of the bed and they headed home.

The rest of the day went by without either one speaking a word to each other, but both were not able to sleep at all until a few hours before they had to get up. The next morning, except for the pouring rain, the usual things happened throughout the day. In the morning, the people talked about how tomorrow was the real bad luck day and how they are preparing themselves by doing a lot of things to bring them good luck instead. Koji ignored most of this because of how tired he was.

After school he slowly made it to his sister's school feeling as if he would drop the umbrella he was holding at any given moment. He knew he was late because most of the kids already left and decided to head towards the nurse's office so he could ignore the annoying stare he seems to be always getting from the woman behind the counter.

Koji walked into the office and looked around and didn't notice anyone until he heard some voices coming from the bathroom.

"Owww...that hurts!" said a familiar voice.

"It's Karin," Koji realized as he knocked on the door and out came the nurse and his sister.

Koji noticed the blood dripping off of the scrapes on Karin's arms and legs. He sighed and asked the obvious, "What happened this time?"

"I opened the umbrella inside the classroom instead of waiting outside to open it instead. I slipped on a puddle and scraped my arms and legs," Karin replied with a look of guilt.

Koji twitched in anger, but clenched his fists to keep himself from yelling at her. He let out a sigh and said, "Come on. Let's go."

The nurse bandaged her scrapes and the two left to head home. The two didn't say anything to each other on their way home. Karin could feel the pain from the water seeping through the bandages and onto her open flesh, but kept her pained face hidden. That night, neither one could sleep knowing that the next day was the day that everyone has been talking about the past week. Luckily, the new day was cloudy, but it didn't rain like the day before. Even a nonbeliever like Koji was glad that it wasn't raining on a day like this. He made sure his sister made it to school safely and headed to his own school, prepared for anything.

As the unlucky day went by, Koji noticed all the students trying to make their luck good by carrying around horseshoes and wearing four-leaf clover necklaces, rabbit's feet necklaces and wearing some type of clothing with the number seven on it. Koji just shook his head over the whole thing, but deep down, he felt as if he should've worn something to give him good luck or at least do something that was lucky. The day seemed to go by faster than the week had gone by and before anyone knew it, school was over.

"Wow, this day went by rather quickly. It's almost as if this was just a normal day," a girl told her friend.

Koji smirked as he watched everyone realize that there was really no stupid omen that everyone had to be prepared for. Koji proudly made his way to his sister's school, ready to rub it in her face, telling her how this was just a normal day like all the rest and saying some common phrases like, "I told you so." However, Koji's egotistic moment was cut short when he saw a paramedics car leave the school grounds in a hurry. Koji immediately rushed into the nurse's office and asked where his sister was and when the nurse slowly came up to him and laid an arm on his shoulder to calm him down, he immediately took off to the hospital. After what seemed like 15-20 minutes later, Koji had made it to the hospital while panting hard.

"I want...to see...my sister...Karin," he said in between pants.

The nurse grabbed her paperwork and told him where her room was. He ran as fast as he could to her room, but he seemed to be jogging because of how tired he was from running all the way to the hospital. He had finally made it to her room after some time and slowly opened it and leaned on the door for support so he wouldn't fall. He saw the doctor and he motioned for him to come over.

"I'm sorry for having to be the one to tell you this, but we aren't quite sure if your sister will make it or not," the doctor explained and lowered his head.

"What do you mean by that? What happened?!" Koji yelled over-excitedly.

"Calm down," he sighed and began to explain. "As some witnesses explained it, your sister, Karin, saw some flowers on the side of the building and she decided to pick them for you since they weren't there before and she believed that they grew after it rained yesterday. She saw a four-leaf clover in the grass near the flowers and she wanted you to have good luck so she decided to pick it for you. Unfortunately, a ladder was crushing part of the clover and she tried to move it and it fell on top of her, crushing her. She broke her arm, but what we are concerned about is that she may have paralyzed her back bone and it may cause her to die because the ladder collapsed on her hard. We are doing the best we can though, but there are no guarantees."

Koji stared wide-eyed into oblivion, but snapped back into it when the doctor slightly shook him back to Earth.

"Was Karin...under the ladder?" Koji asked in his robot-like state.

"That's what they said," the doctor replied.

"Then, what they said about this day was true," Koji realized to himself and a silent tear flowed down his face. Koji turned to his sister's sleeping form and the doctor walked out to leave him alone.

"She got hurt for me. She was warning me about the bad luck too. The bad things that happened to her this week, I should've paid attention, but no! I just had to argue with her. Now I might lose her forever!" Koji clenched his eyes shut as the tears began to stream down his face. "I'm sorry Karin, I was supposed to protect you. Look what I have done to you now! I do believe now, I believe in everything now."

Koji took his sister's hand in his, but felt something unusual inside of it. "What's this?" he thought as he opened up her hand. "Is this...a four-leaf clover?" he asked himself and closely examined it. "S-she was holding it when this happened to her...maybe she'll be okay?" he hoped to God that would be the case because if it were, he would do anything for her now.

Koji began to walk out of the room and opened the door after turning and looking at his sister one more time. Before he was about to step out, he heard the blankets move and he looked over with a sparkle of hope in his eyes.

"Big brother?" Karin lightly said with a sleepy _expression.

"K-karin...KARIN!" he shouted with happiness as he ran over and hugged his sister.

"Hello to you too big bro. I was going to go, but then, you believed that the four-leaf clover was lucky so I was able to stay," she smiled.

"Well, I am glad," Koji smiled back as he placed the clover neatly in his sister's hair.
