For lots of forum software and other scripts, the companies usually advertise using boxes.

It seems professional but is it just me or is it a little odd how the advertise like that?

For example:
Invision Power Board

Burning Board

Maybe they just like showing off their graphics skillz in box making. :)

"One reason why mathematics enjoys special esteem, above all other sciences, is that its laws are absolutely certain and indisputable, while those of other sciences are to some extent debatable and in constant danger of being overthrown by newly discovered facts."
Albert Einstein

"What science can there be more noble, more excellent, more useful for men, more admirably high and demonstrative than mathematics."
Benjamin Franklin

"Mathematics, rightly viewed, possesses not only truth, but supreme beauty – a beauty cold and austere, like that of sculpture, without appeal to any part of our weaker nature, without the gorgeous trappings of paintings or music, yet sublimely pure and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show."

It's probably to reel in customers who aren't exactly net-savvy. A lot of people won't readily realise that they can buy things online and not ever physically hold said purchases in their hands. So displaying a box, real or not, sort of tells the customer that they aren't wasting their money on nothing and that what they're buying is a real program. (Since most programs that you buy in stores come in boxes much like that.) It gives a higher sense of professionalism and encourages people who aren't used to buying things online to buy their things because it "looks like" something they'd buy in a store.

That'd be my guess. :O

USUALLY when they display a box it means that the product is avaliable to buy in stores or shipped upon special request.
Well if they were able to be bought in stores, IPS and other companies would have hardly any control over their products.
