I think this goes in Pokemon General, so I'll move it there.

As for the actual topic, the names are probably just thought up by combining words or sounds that relate to the Pokemon. Such as Raichuu - "rai" is the Japanese word for "thunder" or "lightning" and "chuu" is the sound that a mouse makes. Put them together and you get "thunder mouse". ^_^;

Frankly I think many of the Japanese pokemon names are far more creative... imo. Like Fushigidane, Faiya or Kairyu XD. Sorry, I guess I'm just more accustomed to the Japanese pokemon names.

But I don't know how they first came up with the idea. I would also like to know...

Am I back? My search continues.

Actually, usually the translated names are more stupid, or at least I think so. In most cases all the Japanese names have far more meaning then the ones NOA come up with. After all they do is just take most of the games NOJ makes and translate it, it's where most of their hits come from. I really don't think NOA puts as much work into it as NOJ.

Uh, just about ALL names in anime, not just Pokmon, have some kind of meaning. Only reason why they've translated it: people in other countries need to know how to pronounce them. It may have some symbolism, but not as much as the Japanese counterparts.
In the morning when you wake up, Open your eyes to a new day.
Look around at the gifts you've got. You've been so lucky along the way.
Time to finish what you've begun. Have the faith, you're the one.
Throw your hat high - up to the sun.

Now you face your greatest test. Use the lessons that you've learned.
Your goal is to be the best, And claim the prize that you've earned.
Ever since you were a young man, You've kept your eye on the master plan.
To reach for the top - and touch the sky.

It's your destiny,
To spread your wings and fly.

well they like all have root words that you can decypher their meanings from, so they are kind of encrypted names...the names sort of match their personality...
the legendaries i think are done after different religious mythology...like someone once told me jirachi was affiliated with russia...

About Chikorita, Bayleef, and Meganium, this is the correct meaning of the names:

Chikorita: Chikory (a type of herb) + ita (spanish thing that signifies smallness)
Bayleef: Bay (a type of herb) + Leef (Leaf)
Meganium Mega + Geranium (a type of flower)

I prefer the Japanese names though...they make the pokemon seem more believeable because there's a mystery behind the meaning of each name instead of them being so straightforward.

I did that with SSBM once...it was hilarious...I would send out Venusaur and he'd be like "Fushigidane!" and Wobbuffet would be like "Soonansuu!"

I'm interested in knowing what Mewtwo says when he wins on the Japanese version of Melee...because he's definitely saying something...
