Maligayang Pasko sa lahat (Merry Christmas everyone)!

I know I may sound insane, or you may think I'm really weird or what, but I've been making a Dragonite moveset for quite some time now. It's my Dragonite for Emerald Version.

The thing is, I want it to be a winner BOTH in the Battle Frontier AND in Pokemon Contests. What makes it more complicated is that I want Dragonite to be able to win all 5 Contests (but not necessarily have its painting in all 5 slots in the Lilycove Museum, maybe just for COOL Contest). As we all know, it's going to be hard since a Pokemon can have only 4 moves at a time. So, please help me:

DRAGONITE @Contest Scarf (for Contests); King's Rock (for Battling)
Ability: Inner Focus
EV's: 212 Attack, 138 Special Attack, 160 Speed
FLY (Smart - Makes the user oblivious to anything for the rest of the appeal turn)
THUNDERPUNCH (Cool - Highly appealing; use after Ice/Fire Punch for contest combo)
ICE or FIRE PUNCH (Both beauty - Highly appealing; use after Thunderpunch for Contest combo)
RETURN (Cute - Will excite the audience anytime) OR
EARTHQUAKE (Tough - Startles the opponents by at least 3 points)

Now, what should I use? Ice Punch or Fire Punch? And the more important decision: Earthquake or Return? Return can excite the audience in both Cute and Tough, but Earthquake can give the other appealants a hard time!

Fire Punch can handle Ice types, what Dragonite hates the most. But then, most Ice types are joint Water-Ice Pokemon, and we have Thunderpunch for that. Ice Punch can be useful against other Dragons (esp. Salamence), but... I don't know what to pick!

Earthquake is always useful for Dragonite, but so is Return, especially if you've been raising it since it was a little Dratini and gave it all the love you could give. What must I use??

Please help me make this BIG decision in my Emerald game. Thanks, and Feliz Navidad!

Nyah, hate to break it to you but this thing will never win in the frontier. Not only is King's Rock a sucky luck item, but you've also got several things wrong. Nearly all Ice types have high Special Defense, so Fire Punch will certainly not cause enough damage with Fire Punch to OHKO them. Furthermore, Fly never works against real opponents. It's a sucky two-stage move that should never be used on anything except for a HM slave. If you want it to survive in both contests and battles I'd suggest something like:

Dragonite @ Leftovers/Contest Scarf
Nature: Quiet
Thunderpunch/Thunderbolt
Ice Punch/Ice Beam
Substitute
Focus Punch

Wannabe BOAHnite. Thunderbolt and Ice Beam are the better (And more easily obtainable) moves for this set and the preference for battle, but if you're willing to cut down on its offensive power a little, Thunderpunch and Ice Punch make a nifty appeal combo for contests. Focus Punch does some nasty damage with Dragonite's high Attack, and in contests it lets you move to the last appeal slot, which is good if your opponents are about to do some serious jamming, or if the crowd excitement is at the right level. Finally, Substitute works well with Dragonite's high HP and in contests it does the same as Fly.

Another possible set would be

Dragonite @ Leftovers/Contest Scarf
Nature: Adamant
Aerial Ace
Earthquake
Rock Slide/Thunder
Dragon Dance

A pretty nifty moveset for Tough/Cool Contests and certainly worthwhile in battle. Aerial Ace is a good STAB move in battle and works excellently in contests (Double appeal if you're first), Dragon Dance is also a Cool move and will empower your other appeals in contests, and Earthquake provides some serious startling power. For the last move, Rock Slide helps against Ice types in battle and provides another startling option in contests, while Thunder (Also a startling move) helps against bulky water types that could cause problems for Dragonite in battle. Return is kind of meh in contests since it only has one appeal, and in battle it's a lukewarm option compared to the others. You really don't need to put that much emphasis on contest moves, as long as you've raised the contest attributes high enough, they'll win it for you. (I won a Hyper Rank contest using only appeals that directly clashed with the contest type, meaning crowd excitement went waaaay down).

Oooooh, okay. Thanks! I think I'll use the Subpunch/Thunderpunch/Ice Punch set. Thanks a lot.

The Dratini I got has a Brave Nature and will get 212 Attack EVS, 138 Special Attack EVS, and 160 Speed EVS. Good enough, or should I reverse Attack and Speed?
