Team Related questions are best fitting in the Strategies and Movesets forum. I'll move it there for you.

To be honest, none of those pokémon are really that great. Charmander is the weakest of all starters and zard has a 4x rock weak among others, Pidgey evolves into what is positively the weakest normal/flying poke around. So yeah. Primeape could be worth going for, though, as it's pretty good, but it's still inferior to Machamp and (later on) Hera. But for the recommendations, do you mean any pokémon available in the game or just the ones near the start? There's a huge difference, you know. As an early-on adjustment, though: drop Pidgey for Spearow (or, if you're willing to wait, Doduo). Both Fearow and Dodrio are far superior to Pidgeot, both by movepool and statline. The moveset of choice for both of those would be:

@Choice Band
Drill Peck
Return/Double-Edge
Steel Wing
Quick Attack

Other worthwhile pokes include Alakazam (Abra is available just after Cerulean), Snorlax (Can't miss it, really) Steelix (Onix is in Rock Tunnel and you'll get a Metal Coat in the sevii islands), Gyarados (Not hard to get a karp, really isn't), either of the nidos, Machamp, Vaporeon and Crobat (you can't evolve it past Golbat before you beat the league, though xP). Meh, there are plenty around, just make sure to get a nice balance between physical and special attackers, tanks and sweepers, and types. All there is to it, really.

If this is strictly in-game, I would highly suggest Caterpie. Now, before you fall out of your chair from laughing, let me explain. Butterfree has the Compoundeyes Trait, which increases its accuracy by 130%. That means moves like Sleep Powder and Stun Spore become highly accurate, moreso than the 70% accuracy you will get from using it with other Pokes. I then spent quite a bit of time battling Pidgey and Rattata on Route 1, getting 1 Spd EV for each battle, in an effort to make my Butterfree faster.

I actually recently restarted my LG cart with the stipulation that I had to use the first 5 species that I encountered. My team ended up as:

Blastoise
Rattata
Pidgeot
Butterfree
Raichu
Mankey

Not a good team by any stretch of the imagination, but this was in-game and this team still rocked. My typical in-game battle would be to lead with Butterfree and promptly put the opposing Poke to sleep (or use Stun Spore if it resisted sleep or was an early riser), and then I would switch to a different Poke that could actually do damage. That invariably was either a SubPunching Raichu or a BU Mankey. With Pikachu I would Sub while the opponent slept and then sweep with either Thunderbolt or Focus Punch. With Mankey I would Bulk Up while the opponent slept and then sweep with Cross Chop or Rock Slide or Earthquake (EQ on a Fighting type isn't ideal, but I didn't have any better Poke to use). Raticate worked well, mainly due to Super Fang, which is one of the greatest moves in the game. Being able to half a Poke's HP no matter what is pretty sweet.

Pidgeot, of course, was the weak link. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get through Route 1 without seeing one. I would have MUCH rather gotten a Spearow on the next route, since Fearow is a MUCH better Poke than the craptacular Pidgeot. Its lower base Atk and lack of Drill Peck left me wanting on many occasion. Run away from the birdie.

There is no love for Oddish and Bellsprout? I highly disapprove of this thread.

I would have preferred to have had an Oddish or Bellsprout on my team, but I had already encountered 5 different species long before then. I also wanted a Geodude over Mankey, but thems the breaks.

I always have one of the two in my FR/LG games (of course, dependent on which). My personal fav is Victreebel. But Vileplume makes a better SunnyBeamer, perhaps my utmost favourite combo move.

As for the poster, I would retire that Pidgey for a Spearow. As Shane said, Fearow is much better that Pideot. Gyrados is a monster, but crumbles to Electric attacks (I think that's his only 4x weakness, though?).

Depending on which game you have, I would without a doubt pick up an Oddish or Bellsprout (found up from Cerulean). But please don't teach it Cut. Not only is it terrible, but it makes the Poke sound EMO.

Ninetails is decent in-game, but really isn't all that good. It learns Flamethrower at a late level, and doesn't have many other good attacks besides that. Save for Grudge, which I think he can learn? I *hate* that move, since it's taken out some good PPs on many an occasion. I've never been more happy to see a move miss!

Clefable is a tank, but Nidoking has a lot of weakness. Either way, I do like him.

I'm going with Shane all out on this one: pick up a Caterpie.

Also, if you want a decent Electric Poke for a portion of the game, hunt around Viridian Forrest for a while and pick up a Pikachu. He's toast against most physical attacks, but once evolved, he has some tanking potential.
