Well, I've pretty much abandoned making Pokemon movesets the way I had used to. Way back when, I thought this was an awesome creature:

Ninetales
Overheat
Flamethower
Heat Wave
Fire Blast

I'll never do that again, of course. But there is one thing I've been wondering now that we have the Special/Physical shift:

Would anyone here think that it'd be all right using two moves of the same type, assuming one is Physical and one is Special? The one that comes to mind the most is Overheat + Flare Drive, for some of my Fire Types. In some cases it appears to be all right, but another half of me thinks I'm just wasting a slot.

So, what do you people think? ^_^

No. I hear what you are saying but no.

The split makes mixed sweepers more of a viable option. You will see alot more Physical Sweepers carrying special attacks. You will also see Special Sweepers carrying physical attacks. But that is more to counter the wall that's gonna pop up and block him.

If anything it makes carrying Double Moves more of a detriment because the Metagame will be more offensive then the previous one. That means more pokes carrying more diverse movesets meaning you'd like to have a counter for everything.

Example: Gengar with *Psychic could switch in on Heracross and be a bad matchup but with Heracross now packing *Blade Test - Gengar isn't going to like the outcome.

NO. Don't do anything crazy like that. That's what we have Physical Sweepers and Special Sweepers for. Depending on what it is, use that sort of attack.

I'm going to disagree with what others before me have said. There are some instances (Torterra for example) where the Pokemon is completely walled by another build to defend against its attacking type. It is, in these instances, that a Pokemon can use a powerful move of a different attacking stat and use STAB to make up for the drop in power. You'll find on special versions of Salamence and Latios, for example, to carry both Dragon Asteroid (Meteoric Swarm) and Dragon Pulse. Torterra will probably be found carrying both Wood Hammer and Leaf Storm on its Choice Banded variation.

i agree with you bliksem, but even so, that completely defeats the purpose of building a good team. the most vital thing about a team is that each pokemon covers as much types as it can with its moveset while maintaining the overall welfare of the team. in the offchance that a grass type attack vs an opponent of torterra will not be very effective, you've completely reduced torterra to 2 of its other moves. torterra's overall battle effectivenes is reduced by 50% in just that one instance. it would be much smarter to just take the option where one grass type move (Wood Hammer, for instance) will be effective vs a number of pokemon, and that extra slot have a possible effectivity vs another number of pokemon. using wood hammer on a rhyperior with a very high defense is well worth its function even if a Leaf Storm would've done much more damage because of its low special defense stat. so as you can see, it's not worth the risk.

This is not what Alakazam17 is talking about.

This example is using *Meteoric Swarm like an *Explosion. That is an exception. Some people have taken to using Hyper Beam versions (150 BA moves that can't go next turn) as STAB pseudo ~ *Explosions. You are suppossed to use it right before you die.

Alakazam17 was talking about using *Flare Drive + *Flamethrower on Infernape for example. Not a 150 BA move that you use right before you die. Come on man read the posts better.

And if Torterra is found carrying both those moves i don't like that setup at all. With a ChoiceBand he should be rocking : <*Earthquake / *Stone Edge / *Wood Hammer / *Crunch>.

I guess in the game it doesn't make a frikin difference. NetBattle is a totally different story though. =/

Having two moves of the same type against some pokemon isnt going to cover anything really

For example Venusaur with both Leaf Storm and Seed Bomb is still completely walled by skarmory, while if you gave it ONE of those attacks along with HP[Fire] you could use STAB and cover skarmory (which completely walls Venusaur)

Two moves of the Same type IS viable if the two moves are completely different.

i.e. Hi Jump Kick and Reversal on Hitmonlee. Crunch and Pursuit on CBTar. Return and Quick Attack on Pidgeot.

Basically, one of those moves will be your main move against most opponents and the other is reserved for more special cases.

Wrong, Meteoric Swarm is WAY different than Explosion. MS is a Dragon Overheat, not a Dragon Hyper Beam (that would be Dialga's Time Roar). MS is a hit-and-run move. You'll probably use it more often than Dragon Pulse due to it's sheer power and the fact that'll you most likely be switching out anyways. This is the reason AGMence is such a force to be reckoned with.

My Bad. I stand corrected.

But it doesn't change my main point that you can only use 2 moves of the same type when one serves a special purpose. (Dragon) is an exception anyway because it hits everything but (Steel) neutral anyway. Any poke sporting (Dragon) attacks will be carrying a (Fire) attack as well.

And in the *Meteoric Swarm example the other move is *Dragon Pulse not *Dragon Claw so they are both Special Attacks while the original poster asked if he should carry a Special + Physical version of the same type.

And on a side note can Salamence get any more good builds. This thing is a menace that can Sweep either way with restriction items or not. He is absolutely brutal.
