So some mates and I have made a bet over the easter break we will all start pokemon from the beginning ann at the end of the holiday battle for cash. None of us have played pokemon in years but back in the day I wasn't too shabby.

We've agreed not to use the rare candy cheat but all pokemon and moves are allowed (incl mewtwo which means killing him will be a big part of the game).

I've thought of a couple of possibilites and reserves so tell me what you think and what will make them better. (all will be raised to lvl 100)

Mewtwo
-psychic
-amnesia
-ice beam/thunder bolt
-recover

Mew
-swords dance
-earthquake
-softboiled
-psychic/body slam

Slowbro
-psychic
-amnesia
-surf
-rest

Chansey
-minimize/double team
-soft boiled
-light screen
-thunder bolt?

Exeggutor
-psychic
-sleep powder
-thunder bolt/egg bomg/explosion/rest/double team
-thunder bolt/egg bomg/explosion/rest/double team

Snorlax
-rest
-double team
-earthquake
-body slam/hyper beam

Persian
-slash
-agility
-double team
-rest

Rhydon
-earthquake
-rock slide
-double team
-rest

I really like the double team-rest combo because it just frustrates the oponent while you go to town on em. Persian with agility can hit tons of critical hits and with slash's already STAB 1.5x you can potentially hit for 210 attacking power.

Thoughts?

Team related questions are best fitting in the Strategies and Movesets forum, where I'm going to move this.

Double Team + Rest is not good anymore because of new attacks like Aerial Ace.

You should teached your Persian Sand-Attack rather than rest,it can lower your opponent's accuracy and it's a good combo though...

Forgot to mention since it got moved. This is only Red, blue and yellow that we're playing so there are no moves like aerial ace.

Mewtwo
-psychic
-amnesia/Barrier
-Blizzard
-recover

Mewtwo is kinda cheap in RBY

Mew
-swords dance
-earthquake
-softboiled
- Body SlamHyper Beam / Explosion

You could probably also use Submission over Earthquake, I suppose.

Slowbro
-psychic
-amnesia
-surf
-rest

Chansey
-Ice Beam
-soft boiled
-Thunder Wave /S ing
-thunder bolt?

Light Screen stops working when Chansey switches out (In RBY), and not too many things can hurt Chansey on the special side as it is.

Exeggutor
-psychic
-sleep powder
- Explosion
- Stun Spore / Mega Drain

Exeggutor doesn't get Thunderbolt

Snorlax
-rest
-Surf
-earthquake
-body slam/hyper beam

I should take this time to say that you should stop using Double Team and Minimize. You can also use Amnesia + Ice Beam or Selfdestruct over Rest.

Persian
-slash
-Agility / Hyper Beam
-Bubblebeam
-Body Slam

Rest is wasted on such a fragile Pokemon

Rhydon
-earthquake
-rock slide
-Body Slam
-rest / Substitute

I really like the double team-rest combo because it just frustrates the oponent while you go to town on em. Persian with agility can hit tons of critical hits and with slash's already STAB 1.5x you can potentially hit for 210 attacking power.

Thoughts?
Really, Double Team is just a wasted moveslot on any Pokemon, and is quite frowned upon in competitive play. IMO, your best bet for a 6 Pokemon team, out of this selection, would probably be Exeggutor/Rhydon/Persian/Chansey/Mewtwo/Slowbro.

kool thanks guys. Anyone got a link to what pokemon give you what EVs in RBY and how much they give you? That'll help alot instead of just getting whatever the elite four give me.

I don't recall EVs in RBY. I thought that was introduced first in GSC. I could be wrong though. I haven't played that game in too many years.

You should replace your brain with that of a dog.

You brain isn't really that good.

Snorlax has been one of the more useful special sponges in every Generation from Red to Emerald.

Charizard and even fire pokemon in general aren't all that useful in RBY.

Charizard has 2x weak to electric, 2x weak to water, 4x weak to rock, although flying makes him immune to he'll get his ass handed to him by any ground guys.

These are all some of the most use types and attacks in the game whereas snorlax is weak only to fighting which is barely used in RBY because of the overwhelming dominarion of psychcics.

He's also the worst starter if you want to get through the game quickly and start raising people to 100. Using squirtle and not bothering to raise anyone else its possible to get through the game without much time wasted. (you could also catch a dugtriop for surge but I've never needed to).

Are you guys sure there are no EVs in RBY. From the different guides I've looked at they seem to say there is. And aren't the heavily linked to protein etc which appear in RBY.

The guide I've been using to brush up is RJones strategy guide. I cant post the link but if you go to gamespot for blue then hints and cheats you can find it.

Charizard and Fire Pokes aren't all that useful in ANY game. As Synch said, Snorlax has been dominant from day one and still is.

No, there are no EVs in RBY. The concept certainly does exist in the game, where when you battle your Poke gets what is called "Stat Experience", but you don't have any control over it. As Rubberbandman stated, that wasn't introduced until Ruby/Sapphire. DVs were the values given to a Poke when you first caught it. You couldn't manipulate them at all (whithout cheating) until breeding was introduced in GSC.

In short, there are technically EVs in RBY, just not in the same way as they are now.

I forget if Toxic was decent in RBY. Whether it was, Sleep and Paralysis status are both dominant with Body Slam and Sleep Powder/Hypnosis being some of the most common moves. That means that Toxic might not find the room to be effective.

Okat we started today and I just finished the game. (Went through as quick as I could with just a squirtle, had a lvl 70 blastoise by the elite four and a level 10 spearow and some other HM slaves and mew lol)

Now I can start getting down to training. I'm going to use the master ball and catch mewtwo, write down its stats, reset without saving,. repeat. This way I can get the best possible DVs... hopefully.

I'll then start on mew and work from there.

using a master ball on mewtwo isn't rlly wise, i caught it with 12 ultra balls and it had a jolly nature for some reason.
save the master ball for suicune(for me-i started with charmander) unless u cloned the master balls or something...

Umm I'm playing RBY. There is no suicine. Beside I will probably have to catch mewtwo about 20 times to get good DVs.

Well, if you don't want to use the item clone cheat on Rare Candies, you could still use them on Master Balls, I suppose.

What about drugs like protien and calcium that would also affect the choice of attacks
