Hey all I've just recently picked up Fire Red and was wondering what moves are good for Mewtwo these days. I know Mewtwo isn't as good as he was in the old days, but I'm a Mewtwo fan so I can't help it lol I think the moveset was different for each generation or something.

Red/Blue/Yellow: Blizzard // Thunder // Recover // Psychic
Gold/Silver/Crystal: Ice Beam // Thunder-bolt // Recover // Psychic

I'm not sure what to put for R/S/E seeing as I never traded Mewtwo to my Ruby version. Any help is appreciated, thanks :)

There's not much more you can do with Mewtwo beyond that.

Gee guys, you sure are being a BIG help. =\

Mewtwo @Leftovers
Modest Nature
-Psychic
-Ice Beam
-Thunderbolt
-Recover/Flamethrower

Good enough for in-game. Nothing will stand in your way.

Mewtwo @Leftovers
Lonely Nature
-Shadow Ball
-Focus Punch
-Thunder
-Ice Beam

Great for competitive. It covers basically every single Pokemon in the uber metagame.

Thanks a lot aragonbird, why use Thunder for competitive though? Doesn't it miss more often than Thunderbolt? Thanks again, I haven't played competitive before so its cool to see something different :)

Nyu, Thunder is standard for competitive since Mewtwo plays in the uber metagame, meaning that you'll be running into Kyogre 24/7. No reason not to exploit that 'Drizzle' trait. Also, Thunder has a higher para-rate than T-Bolt and can get KOs faster on a number of strategic pokes (Such as, in the OU, Snorlax and Milotic) so it's actually quite common in competitive despite the lack of accuracy.

Also, Atabas, that set is sort of messed up. Why the heck would you want Shadow Ball on it if it's primarily special sweeping and why for the love of grammar is it Lonely with only one physical attack? Really, Aragornbird already covered the best sets so just leave it at that. xP

my Mewtwo on Pokemon stadium had
Psychic
Thunder
hyper beam
Ice beam
and insane stats
if only I could get the guy onto pearl

Actually he's my fav legendary if that counts XD But uhh I was thinking after looking at some moves suggested by aragonbird I'm looking at:

Shadow-Ball, Focus Punch, Thunder, Ice Beam

or

Shadow-Ball, Thunder, Ice Beam, Recover

and I was debating whether to use Brick Break or Focus Punch? Any thoughts? Cause Brick Break is one turn obviously whereas Focus takes 2.

And thanks Alter_Ego for the explanation. And what minor changes are there for Mewtwo?

Oh, how do I say this? Never use Focus Punch without Substitute.

Then why did aragonbird suggest it then? In that case I might lean to Brick Break...

I'm not really sure why he suggested it. You have a chance of the opponent not using a damaging move following your Focus, but not much of one.

Wrong! Anybody can use Focus Punch without Substitute if they can predict right. If you have to use Substitute with Focus Punch, that means your prediction skills are bad.

And where did you get the idea that Focus Punch takes two turns?

User is tightening focus!
Enemy does something
User used Focus Punch!

That's all in ONE turn, not two. And in that one turn, it will do TWICE as much damage as Brick break.

O sorry dunno how I interpreted it as two moves. Why would you have to predict well for Focus Punch then?

Because if you try to do it on a turn when your opponent goes with something damaging, you'll get 'Mewtwo lost its focus and couldn't move' and lose the attack. F-Punch only works if you don't take any damage on the turn you use it.

the combo of "focus punch" and "follow me" will prevent all none area attacks from hitting Mewtwo and makes his attack work
but that is a worthless combo cus the pokemon that learn "follow me" tend to be to weak to be used effectivly
though that combo is only for a double battle

Oh darn... is Focus Punch only used to take out Pokes like Snorlax or Chansey?

Nope, it works on anything that stops to buff or heal itself, or taunts, or gets switched in, or uses a status move, or is paralyzed, or misses, or...well, anything that doesn't go for damaging moves that turn. xP However, Snorlax and Blissey are what you really need it for since they have high SDef and HP that lets them soak up special attacks effectively. Special attacks are Mewtwo's forte, so F-Punch is an obvious choice for covering the weakness against special walls.

So its not really a first turn attack is it? As in waiting for later turns to use it. Then in the case would Focus Punch be better suited in an asernal with or without Recover?

Actually, this is precisely a first-turn attack. Think about it; what's the first thing your average opponent (not counting the predicters) does when he/she sees a big bad special sweeper looming over the horizon? Switching in a special wall, of course, and if they do the obvious they'll be weeping when Mewtwo OHKOs it (Blissey in the uber typically has maximal EVs in SDef and HP, leaving practically nothing in physical defense). Lugia and defense-form Deoxys will still be laughing at you for that, of course, but such is life, and if you run the set Aragornbird suggested, you'll have super effective hits against those too. So yeah, it's typically run with aggresive non-recover sets to wipe out walls early on and thus leave the opponent open for sweeping. Just go with Thunder/Ice Beam/Shadow Ball/Focus Punch for competitive, or the special set otherwise. ^-^
