You are also forgetting that Americans have aversions that Japanese can't stand...such as homosexuality. It is highly frowned upon...yet there are several animes out there (yaoi/yuri) with that in it. Yes here in America homosexuality is still frowned upon but the acceptance level has greatly improved in recent times. In Japan it is not nearly as talked about. I guess my point is that all societies no matter what are going to have their flaws. Yes there are animes out there (in fact mostly) with adult themes that I would not expose my own children to. Which is the reason they are on adultswim and not everyday on Cartoon Network when kids usually view it. But it is up to parents to monitor what their kids watch you can't blame that solely on Japan. And actually I have seen the anime and read all the manga for Chobits and yes it has more of an adult theme. No I would not allow an 11-year old to view it. But there are also animes out there that are for kids and have no illicit content. This discussion isn't just about anime though, it is about Japanese culture as a whole. And as a whole I am still inclined to think that it is not too influential.
You've watched the pokemon anime, haven't you? I would like to argue that characters like Dawn and Jessie have very short skirts. 4Kids tries to make them longer, but it still looks pretty nasty. I don't hate anime, I just don't like the fact that they put such adult humor in even some kds shows. You may not think it, but I do. Pokemon is not only one of them, look at Sailor Moon. My father, when first watching it with me, was horrified to see the girls' short skirts/outfits. You see, if we had less of this in anime, maybe parents wouldn't find it so sexual. Chobits isn't for kids, I know, but it is as easily viewable to children as Yu-Gi-Oh. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm just saying that some of the themes in anime aren't really for the youth of today, and Japan should recognize and change that.

@yvette

Why should a whole nation change their appeals to suit that of another nation just because their youth are considered not to be able to handle such (How would I put this?) graphical images?

Maybe because the Japanese youth is more mature on such themes then Western children?

That's true too. Why should they? But then again, why should they also sub these graphical animes into english? I didn't mean for the whole nation to change.

Oh well. I suppose kids these days are much more mature then the 1900's. They have guns now.

Well if any blame goes onto anyone its the Western youth. Japanese youth is exposed to more graphical and mature themes but you dont see them go to schools with guns,drugs etc. I am sure there are some but no to the extent of the Western world. Their crime rate is pretty low when compared to most of the Western world.

Yet on the other hand. We in america try to protect our youths. We try to stop them from joining gangs and doing drugs and all those things. Id say Japanese entertainment had nothing to do with this. I will just state the theory that Western youth culture is going through a downfall and deterioration.

Okay I definately agree with Punisher...(on the issue of anime being too graphic)and it still goes back to parents monitoring what their kids are watching. As for short skirts and whatever...that is not a new thing. Anyone who knows anything about anime knows that this not a new sight. *rolleyes* As for "deterioration of the Western youth culture" I don't agree with that statement. I agree it's definately flawed, but not deteriorated.

Maybe you're right, maybe it isn't anime. But you could also say that anime is somehow contributing to that.
