While I think that's a bit rough for your mum to do that, it reminds me of an old quote by Mark Twain:

"When I was a boy of fourteen, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be twenty one, I was astonished by how much he'd learned in seven years."

I do hope things work out for you, though!

Look... I would simply fight back verbally. She doesn't have any right to do this to you.
Actually she does; she's his mother. Your mom has every means of taking the very computer you're typing on and ban you from it. I've learned that you just don't question parents. To take a gameboy away from you; sorry, but there's worse. You know you can think of worse. Just try and live without it; it's for the better and it won't matter twenty years for now.

What!? As I said, his mother doesn't have any rights to take any from him. And yes, you can question your parents. They are human-beings just like us.

Dude, just try to fight back. Tell her how you really feel about how she's being (i.e. "Mom, you're being a (insert choice word here)."). But try to do it calmly. Blowing your stack won't help you in the long run.

Your mother.
Has the right.
To take away.
Anything.
You have.

They give you a house to live in, food to eat, clothes on your back. I say that you should respect such. Treating your parents as every other human being isn't right, because they care about you enough to make sure that you don't starve. Now for such a material item as your gameboy is insensible. It won't kill you to obey your mother, you shouldn't have torn the book. You can't hate someone for that; be upset maybe, but hate is such a strong word for someone who loves you enough to send you to a boarding school for your own education. Just respect your parents, people, it's the right thing to do.

With all the respect I must give you Chibi-Chan, I have to disagree with you. Of course, all the thing that you listed are real. But I think that they doesn't have any rights to do that. That's my opinion though. =P

Agreed. I overthrew the dictatorship my parents were running there for a while. Sometimes even parents get a little out of control, and you're allowed to question their decisions and enlighten them to just how you feel about what they're doing. Just because they provide for you doesn't make them immortal.

Why wouldn't they have the right to take away something you probably wouldn't have if it wasn't for them in the first place? Nobody likes to be disciplined but it's necessary at times. In the grand scheme of things, this is just a gamboy we're talking about. I know it's precious to you and all, Shinji but...

Aww! Guys, that's my own opinion! T_T

If his moms bought the Gamboy, I would understand. But if he bought it or his dad bought it, his mother isn't aloud. ~

I know it's your opinion. I was hoping you could elaborate on it a little. As I see it, he received the gamboy as a gift from his parents. I'd think they still reserve the right to take it back whenever they think he isn't deserving of it any more. If his parents weren't responsible for him attaining it then that'll be a different issue...

Ok then if he received it as a gift, that changes the whole story. <- But still ^^.

Hey, once a gift is given it's given. If they gave him something, it's his and under his jurisdiction from that point forth. If HE bought it, that's worse yet.

We need to all remember here that this is because his stubborn teacher refuses to believe that it's possible for a book (and most likely an old shabby one, if it's from a school), to break. We've all had those ultra-stubborn teachers, and his mom is being really unreasonable if she sides with a teacher like that over her own son.

(Oh and for the record, I believe he's talking about a DS, not a Gameboy, if that changes the viewpoint at all.)

Actually my Dad bought it I been asking my Mom for it forever even before d/p came out and she said no so my Daddy bought it for me God bless him! And shes not actually taking the gameboy from me shes making me go to wal-mart and get a refund, and the book was torn by accident which isn't really fair to charge me 50dollars for something that wasnt even my fault..But my teacher is so cold that she doesnt really care.

Not nessacerilly, I mean maybe it's because I'm eighteen now and have a job that I have to pay for EVERYTHING except educaton, but I mean when something is given you (even if its a gameboy) it's the person you agve the object too. Though I do agree with you in the sense that if someone tore their book they should have to give up something to pay for it.

Yea I agree with that too. Its not like I grabbed the book and starting tearing it like as if I was a dog, I was holding it on my lap sitting down doing some homework and then the book fell from my knee and then I held it by the cover and like the whole cover came off...And the book was already in horrfic condition.

I still can't believe that this big a deal is being made out of a book, and a school text book no less. How many people here have never had a school textbook on the verge of breaking in half before? I've had covers fall off of my books, pages fall out of my books, even whole clumps of pages at times, and have enver been fined for a book because school textbooks are garbage. I think this is a case of a stubborn teacher who dislikes a student, and now the student's got to pay for it (literally). That's why I think that his mom is wrong on this one.

The only way I can understand this being a big deal is if this was a brand new textbook or something, like 4 years old or less.

Until he's eighteen, his mother can do whatever she wants so long as it doesn't violate his personal human rights. Unfortunately, making him return a game system to pay off a textbook debt does not violate those rights. While it may seem unfair, or mean, it definitely can be done. Owning a DS is a privilege and NOT a right, even if you earned it.

That said, I don't think you should hate your mother for this. You may not have ripped the textbook on purpose, but textbooks are very expensive. Ask any university student: it's a couple hundred dollars per term just to get your books. $50 for a book really isn't too bad, even if it's a school owned textbook.

Could you try asking your mother if there's anything else you can do to pay off the book, aside from returning your system? Offer to help out around the house more for a while or do some chores that you wouldn't normally do.
