With all due respect Shinji_, it's only a DS. I'm sure you will be able to live for a while without one. With that said, if you go to the school and make a big enough scene they probably will drop the fine. But it could also get it raised so.....yeah.

EDIT: That last part made me sound like a spoiled child didn't it. Maybe you could go talk to the principal in a calm civilized manner.

Ugh, I see where you're coming from, but she's your mom. She can piss you off, and make you fix what you've broken all in the same breath if she really really wants to. That sucks, though. I agree with Zach. It's not like DS's are hard to come by, you'll get another one at some point.

Well maybe you could find alternitive ways to make money. Some places will hire people under 16 for smaller jobs like storeroom worker. Or maybe you could mow lawns, that's what I do.

Just because the book was torn accidently doesn't mean its not your fault, I think that to some extent you should take responsiblities for the damaged book.

However, your education is your well being, and it would be expected for your parent to fund for this.

Being forced to return a DS sounds unfair, but eitherway judging by this situation, it is a little harsh to 'hate' your mother. Be annoyed with yes, but to 'hate', also considering that she's your parent and looked after you, is too extreme, almost ungrateful.

I think you should get some facts before just posting and actually read what people wrote, like I said I didnt really mean that I literally "hate her" I'm just mad at her its a figure of speech if you did not know that then I feel bad for you =/ And obviously I think to some extent I have taken responsibility and the reason why I have to pay is becuase the teacher thinks I did it on purpose.

Wow, that is kinda harsh. Um, my mother would have just beat my ass down, then been fine with me 20 minutes later xD

Anyways, it's nothing to worry about, and it's not like it will really effect you a few weeks from now. Just sit her down, and try to explain to her calmly your thought on what you did, and see if that works =/
I've left PC.

Why? I'm tired of all the people here who think they're cooler than they actually are, I'm tired of the way certain people get away with things, just because they're friends with the staff here, I'm tired of all the raging teen-angst contained within these forums I'm tired of the way no one knows how to take a joke anymore, I'm tired of how I've been treated by the people I've thought to be my "friends" here, and I'm tired of all the unwanted drama PC has caused in my life over the past several months.

Plus, Pokemon just sucks anyways.

Shes being so dumb theres this boarding school im trying to get in right and I need to send my 3rd term report card and I dont have it becuase before school was over I didnt pay for this textbook I ripped by accident and the thing about it is the teacher saying I did it on purpose becuase I was mad at her that day why the hell would I rip a textbook so I would have to pay..And heres the catch MY MOM IS MAKING ME RETURN MY GAMEBOYDS THE THE FRIGGIN WAL-MART AND I HAVE TO PAY THE 50 DOLLARS WHEN MY MOM SAID SHE WAS GOING TO PAY FOR IT A LONG TIME AGO THATS SUME BULLCRAP RIGHT THERE AND I AINT EVEN GOING TO TALK TO THAT ..... FOR A LONG TIME Post if i'm right to be mad..
You have every right to be mad. While she does have the right to ground you from your DS untill you are 18 she Does not have the right to make you return your DS to pay for that textbook!
Agreed. I overthrew the dictatorship my parents were running there for a while. Sometimes even parents get a little out of control, and you're allowed to question their decisions and enlighten them to just how you feel about what they're doing. Just because they provide for you doesn't make them immortal.
I agree. They should be respected and they do have say over you but they should at least listen to you before punishing you. 6/10 times the good kid gets punished when there was an acceptable reason/necessity to bend/break rule# {insert random rule # here}

Not nessacerilly, I mean maybe it's because I'm eighteen now and have a job that I have to pay for EVERYTHING except educaton, but I mean when something is given you (even if its a gameboy) it's the person you agve the object too. Though I do agree with you in the sense that if someone tore their book they should have to give up something to pay for it.

Yea I agree with that too. Its not like I grabbed the book and starting tearing it like as if I was a dog, I was holding it on my lap sitting down doing some homework and then the book fell from my knee and then I held it by the cover and like the whole cover came off...And the book was already in horrfic condition.
>_> Looks like you got railroaded by the teacher. It happens all too much in public schools. They want new books sooooo bad they'll "throw the book"(Pardon the cliche) at you even if you accidentially rip 1 page. That's why when I get textbooks at the begining of the school year I check them over. If they are falling apart I reject the book and refuse to sign for it. One time I even took a book to the bookkeeper in the office and told her the teacher was trying to issue me a book in very poor condition and that if I was not issued a better one(one that isnt coming apart already) then I would not be held responsible for any incidential damages to the book. She talked to the assistant principal and he took the book and told the teacher to let me have a better book. She wouldnt let me before he said that though even though she had a whole huge stack of books in better condition than the one she gave me.
THat happened to me in 9th grade. I didnt lose any of my stuff or anything because my dad actually listens to me. But he was gonna take my allowance away until it was paid back untill I explained to him what had happened. My dad fought it then. In the end the AP just said we'll just charge you $20 instead of the price of a new book ($180) because the book was over 5 years old and had been issued to 15 students before me. I didnt have to give up my allowance either because my dad knew it wasnt my fault when the book fell apart.

IMHO, Rules are meant to be followed To a Certain Extent.
Some times people in power forget that sometimes it's necessary to bend/ignore a certain rule and they come down upon you too zealously.
I think that's the #1 pitfall of all people in a position of rule enforcement. They forget that rules are meant to guide you. They forget that people above them(The Rulemakers) didnt think of every possible scenario which a rule could be broken so they could list exceptions to the rules.
Not only did the teacher forget that but it seems that your mom forgot it too!
It's perfectly fine to solidly enforce the rules if it's clear that you broke the rule for no good reason. However they also need to take into account the factors influencing your decision.
IMHO, You are the one who decides what rules you will follow. But keep in mind that for every rule you choose to ignore you must pay the consequenses if the 'one in charge of' or 'majority of the people' enforcing the rule disagrees with your reason behind ignoring the rule. It's quite an unfair system if you are actually in the right and the majority/leader is too dumb to realize that. But that's how things are. XP

What's up with all these new rights going around? Did some activists convince the new world government that they should be in place or something? o.O

Well if that's the case, then you should understand that with rights come responsibilities. You damaged the textbook, so you're responsible for repairing that damage. Sure, it was an accident, but you're responsible for a car accident while driving you also are expected to pay for it. Get what I mean?

You're angry, but screaming hate about your momma isn't gonna do anything. Calm down, grow up and deal with it in a responsible manner, if anything.

Actually...she does have that right. She has the right to do whatever she deems necessary as punishment, I believe, so long as it does not affect his human rights. And as far as I know, returning a Nintendo DS does not invade those. :\

He was the one who did the damage to the textbook whether it was an accident or not. In a car accident, the one at fault is the one who pays the price--they can't say "I didn't mean to" and get off the hook; hell, sometimes it really isn't their fault but they have to pay anyway because of the way the laws are written. They will be punished, perhaps by their insurance company raising their rates so they'll watch what they do more carefully. Whatever the reason, it's not that much different in this situation. He was entrusted with a textbook and he did the damage. So if his mother (his legal guardian) wants to make him take full responsibility and pay for it himself? She can. If paying for it himself means he has to take back his DS? She has every right to take the system back. :\ While he is still a minor and his parents retain parental rights, they make decisions.

I said it before and I'll say it again--owning a video game system is a privilege not a right. People these days toss around the word "rights" too easily these days and don't realize the boundary between having the right to do something and having the privilege.

This thread was made like what 6hours ago amachi o_O I have not been over reacting about anything since the first post so I think I take it offensive you telling me to calm down. And I never damaged the textbook it was already dangling and was basically already broken the book was like 30years old T_T and I dont have to pay for it anymore anyone so this thread is pointless now she said it was a joke and she had me so upset for awhile <.<

Why the heck are all of you blamming me? I wasnt actually the one to "Damage the book" I was just the one who finished it off becuase it was already at the point where it was going to defrost in this case break if that was a new book it would not of broke I can gurantee

Well now we're using the thread to argue about rights. XD; Don't worry, no one's actually blaming you and...most people won't read any posts after the first one, so they don't know you've calmed down.

And as for the book, you may not have done anything to the book, but I know in my school board, when everyone is given a book, they sign a page that says they take full responsibility for it while it's in their care. If it comes back mangled, even if they lent it to a friend who did it, they're still responsible for its replacement. In the future, just try to remember to tell the teacher if you get a battered book. As soon as you receive the text, show them so that they can make some sort of note of it that you don't get in trouble when 6 months later you hand them a broken book.

Glad to hear you're off the hook though. :P

I disagree. It's one thing to take away the privilege to play the DS. That's ok. His mom has every right to do that. However, She doesnt have the right to force him to sell his property to pay for something. There are a million other honest ways to earn money.
There are zillions of other non cruel ways to punish him. If she wanted to take his games away then that's fine but making him sell them is out of bounds even for a parent. I belive that all humans regardless of age have basic rights when it comes to property and their own life. Even if it was a gift it's still his.
I'm not saying they dont have parental rights. However I feel that parental rights stop after spanking. Seizing his DS and selling it or forcing him to sell it is outside the boundaries IMHO.

Unfortunately if you 'Finished it off' It means you are stuck with the bill. I guess you'll just have to either file a complaint with the school/superintendant and contest the fee or pay up. That or hope to god that your mom will pay for it and not take it out on you.

What's up with all these new rights going around? Did some activists convince the new world government that they should be in place or something? o.O

I agree. It's unfair that he was the one to get stuck with such a crappy book. But he could have rejected that copy of the book because of it's condition. That's why there's no way he's gonna get out free unless his mom decides to pay up and not punish him.

>_>
However, I feel your first comment was a bit uncalled for Amachi. The people in this thread were simply stating their opinions. You are perfectly free to disagree, however you shouldnt say things like that. Someone might take offense to it.
EDIT:That's all I'm gonna say on that matter.

Of course she has the "right" to make him do that. Just like every parent has the "right" to make their child clean the toilet with a toothbrush.

Just respect your parents, people, it's the right thing to do.
Yeah, I don't buy that.

That part of the whole Ten Commandments, "Honor thy mother and father" is pure BS. Respect should not be ingrained, it should not be automatic. Respect should be earned, and based on the parent's performance.

Some parents deserve respect... most of 'em don't. Period.

Parents who at least do not listen to their children are the worst, ones who make their sell something they didn't even buy are even worst. And people who say that parents have the right to dominate every aspect of their child's life should not have kids. It'll end up making them more rebellious and deviant and you're wondering why they won't listen to you.

She did not buy your DS, and she has no right to make you sell it neither. Hide it from her, have your friend put it in his locker or something. And when she ask for it tell her; "Well, if you just listen to me instead blindly following what a school teacher says, then you'll get it. If not, I'm breaking it."

Threats and manipulation always works. Sending to her in pieces everyday she refuses to listen to you. Lol.

YES! I agree. Most parents are hopeless control freaks who treat you like you are 3. XP
I think that parents shouldnt expect respect unless they realize your growth and treat you like your age group should be treated. If they cant give their teen some wiggle room to explore then they will, like the one above said, become deviant from the path that the parents are trying to get thier child to take. Oftentimes this can be disastrous when it comes to major decisions in a teen's life. I'm one of the lucky few. My dad, who is in his 60s, happens to be one of the coolest parents ever. He listened to me and instead of ruling with an Iron Fist he rules with only strict expectations. My mom on the other hand, was, A control freak. Hopelessly so. I need not expound more do I?

To be honest I think that respecting your parents is important. But if they dont respect you then how can you respect them. It's as simple as that.

But, here's the kicker. I've been told by some people that I'm more mature than most people my age are. I always have been. I dunno why they say that though. I'm just my silly old self :P

I know that being under your parents rule can be a bit chafing at times(ROFL ROFL. Serious understatement) but just wait until you turn 18. You'll get some leeway at least. That and a whole truckload of responsibility D:
