The integral part of the Myst series is the Stranger, referred by Atrus as his "friend". But what if this Stranger was different? What if this Stranger was a group? What if this Stranger was... Ash Ketchum?

This story is the answer to all of those questions. Join Ash, Brock, Misty, Professor Oak, and Team Rocket as they travel through the worlds of Myst to set right Atrus' old wrongs. See two worlds collide like never before.

Ooh, I'm sorry about that. An oversight on my part.

All right, then. I will comply with the rules and post my story here.

The story is rated PG for very slight bits of realistic violence here and there. And since it is already done, I'm going to do an all-at-once dump of the chapters.

    Chapter 1: The Cave

Ash Ketchum was walking down a road with his friends, Brock and Misty, and his faithful companion, Pikachu. It was a peaceful day, and they were energized. Little did they know, beyond those steps was their next big adventure. Above them, storm clouds were brewing. A few moments later, the storm fell.
"Where do you think we can stay until the storm is gone?" asked Ash.
"I don't know, just keep walking. This storm came so fast!" responded Misty.
"Yeah. Hey, look! There's a cave right there," said Brock.
"Is it safe, though?" asked Ash.
    "I guess so," responded Brock.
Brock went into the cave to make sure it was safe. After he did just that, Ash and Misty went in the cave. It was dark and damp inside, so Brock lit up a torch to find the way.
"I'm gonna cook a snack, and you guys try to stay warm, okay?"
Brock went out a little to collect water, and came back in. Just at the entrance, there was a button. Brock called Ash and Misty to investigate the button there.
"Guys, look at this button," called Brock.
"What does it do?" asked Ash.
"Why is it there?" asked Misty.
"Gosh, guys, I don't know, maybe if we push the button-"
And at that second, right when Brock pushed the button, the cave lights turned on. The entrance closed and the other end of the cave opened.
"Brock!! What did you do?!" screamed Misty.
"Relax, maybe if we push the button again, said Ash.
Ash pushed the button. Nothing happened.
"No!! Now we'll be trapped here forever!!" screamed Misty.
"Well, at least we'll have fun reading," says Brock, looking at the books.
Their attention was now focused on the books that were sitting on the end shelves. Packing up, they carefully approached the books. Brock picked up a book and tried to comprehend the book.
"Urrgh! This book's unreadable!" said Brock.
"Well, look on the last page." said Misty. She also had picked up a book.
    "Oh yes, you're right."
One book's last page was blank, but the other one viewed an island with a dock and a large mountain. Brock put the dark book in his pack, while everyone else wondered about the other one.
"The book says 'Myst' on the cover, but it doesn't really give us anything else," says Misty.
"Can I take a peek?" asked Ash.
"Sure," said Brock, handing the book still open to the image.
    "Um- whoops..."
Ash and Pikachu had touched the moving image by accident. Ash's body flashed for a brief second, and then he was sucked into the book, leaving no trace of himself.
"Ash!! Where are you?!" screamed Misty.
    "Calm down, Misty," said Brock.
"But then what do we do?"
"I guess there is no other way to go but in, the way Ash went."
"Sure, but who wants to touch the image first?"
    "Ohh, I'll do it."
Brock touched the image first, followed by Misty. The book dropped, and the cave opened.

Chapter 2: Something of a Discovery

In Myst, Ash had landed on the dock, and shortly thereafter, Brock and Misty landed.
    "Where are we?" asked Ash.
"I can't say for sure, but I think the image that we touched actually took life, and now we're trapped in this world," replied Brock. Misty screamed so loud that Brock and Ash had to cover their ears.
"Calm down, Misty. Let's split up to see what we can find around the island," said Brock.
The three split up. Ash went on searching with Misty on the dock side of the island, and Brock went searching on the other side. After what seemed like thirty minutes, they met back in the middle of the island.
"So what'd you find?" asked Ash.
"Well, I saw this shack, something that's looking like a library, a rocket, a well, and a clock tower. What'd you find, Misty?"
"I found a bucket, a cabin, a giant tree, and a building with a chair in it," said Misty.
"I found switches that seemed to do nothing, but I left the switches on in the rocket, cabin, gears, and the dock," says Ash.
"I have a feeling that what we will find will mostly come from the library that I saw. Do you agree with me?" asked Brock.
"Yes!" said both Ash and Misty.
With that, they were on their way to the square building they now thought was the library. Their hopes were high, but not when they got there.
"These books are burnt!" said Brock.
"Who would do something like this?" asked Misty.
"I don't know, but it would be someone mad enough to do this kind of thing."
"At least we could find some books that are not burnt," said Ash. "Let's read them."
The three grabbed two books each from the six that were not burnt.
"Let's everyone give a summary of what they read. I'll start. I read about this world where some island sank into a sea, and all the humans perished, but the primates survived, and the world is called Channelwood. I also read about this world of what seemed to be sounds, but there seems to be a problem with the book; some of the text appears to have disappeared. What'd you read, Misty?" said Brock.
"Well, I read about a world with three mountains, and a city that's being invaded over and over again, and it mentioned building a fortress to save the citizens; the world is Mechanical. I also read about this world where a ship magically anchors itself to a rock, and it's called Stoneship. What'd you read, Ash?"
"Let's see, I found this old world of some dreams or something called Rime, and I got a lousy book of patterns. Did any of the books mention anything else, though?"
"Well, it did mention Atrus in the books, and he seems to have a wife, Catherine, and two sons, Sirrus and Achenar," said Misty.
"I found them in these books too. Maybe they're in all the books. Hmm. besides these few books, what else can we find?"
"Those two books over there, maybe," said Ash, pointing to shelves on opposite sides of the library.
All of them raced to the two books and brought them back into the center of the library. Brock grabbed the red book, Misty grabbed the blue book, and Ash grabbed the loose pages that were sitting with each book. As with the others, they examined them.
"Guys, it looks like these books are written in the same way the book I was holding way back in that cave was," said Brock.
"You are right. Which reminds me, did you still carry that book with you?" asked Misty.
"Uh-huh! I still have it. Hey, Ash, where did you get those pages?"
"They were next to the books. Are any pages missing?"
"Yes, and the panel is static. Look here, in the red book. The opposite page is missing. Can you put the loose red page in?"
"Sure, but I'd rather you put it in."
Ash gave the red page to Brock, and Brock put it back in the book. The page glowed for a brief second, and then bonded back into the book.
They then saw the unexpected: a face. The face floated for a bit, and then the face said, "Red Pages!"
    "AAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!"
They were all watching the books. Their screams were so loud that it scared the seagulls outside.

Moments after their screams had calmed down, the three tried the same method with the blue book. This time, the face said "Blue Pages!"
Brock sighed. "Well, there's nothing else to know except the fact that there are more red and blue pages out there."
    "And this letter," said Misty.
    "What does it say, Misty?"
    "Let's see."

    ==========
    Catherine,

I've left you a message of
    utmost importance in
    our fore-chamber beside
    the dock. Enter the
    number of marker
    switches on this island
    into the imager to
    retrieve the message.

    Yours,
    Atrus
    ==========

    "What does he mean, fore-chamber?"
"What about the message?" asked Ash.
For a brief second, they paused and looked at each other. Then, they all ran out to the dock.
"Where's the chamber? It's got to be around here," said Brock, eyes moving.
"Well, here it is," replied Ash. He touched a panel and a tunnel opened to reveal a staircase and a glowing pool at the bottom. All of them walked down to the glowing pool below them.
"Is this water?" Misty then touched the surface of the water. "Aah! It went through my hand!"
"You don't say," said Brock as he repeated Misty's movements. "Misty, you're right! This is not a pool, but the holographic imager that Atrus more than likely used to record his message."
    "Holo-what?" asked Ash.
"They use these to display images, sort of like a projector, but in three dimensions," replied Brock.
"Sure, but how do you display the message?"
"Much less enter the number," added Brock.
"Look there," replied Misty as she pointed to the panel. They all walked over to the panel.
"Let's see. There's a topographical extrusion, pool simulator, and a marker switch image. But what's the button for?" Brock said. He pushed the button, revealing a number panel. "Well, I guess we put in the number here. How many marker switches did you see when you were looking around the island, Ash?"
"I think there were 8 - there was an unreachable one on the clock tower."
Brock entered the number 08 into the console. A heavy image of a man suddenly replaced the holographic pool. The message begins to play.
"Catherine, my love. I have to leave quickly, something terrible has happened. It's hard for me to believe... most of my books have been destroyed. Catherine, it is one of our sons. I suspect Achenar, but I shouldn't leap to conclusions... I'll find him and Sirrus as well. Oh, I should have known better than to have left my library unchecked for so long!"
"Well-" Ash started. Brock shushed him while the remainder of the message played.
"Well, I have removed the remaining undamaged books from the library and placed them in their places of protection. You should not have to use the books until I return, but... if you've forgotten the access keys, remember the tower rotation. Oh, and don't worry Catherine, everything will be fine. I'll see you shortly. Oh, and erase this message after you've viewed it just to be safe."
"If Catherine had viewed the image, she would have erased this. But clearly she did not view the message," Brock said.
"Oh, boy. What do we do now?" said Ash.
"Well, maybe we can go back to the library and find some clues to these mysteries," replied Brock.
All three returned to the library. There, they tried to find clues, but they had no luck, until they looked at the map.
"Look, the map is glowing!" said Misty.
"Ash, did you do something?" asked Brock.
"I might have turned switches that were on those places," said Ash. "I'll check."
He went outside to examine the dock, the rocket, the gears, and the cabin. Sure enough, they were on.
    "Yes, they are on."
"So that means the marker switches mark the places on this map. How interesting," said Brock. "But what's this circle?" Brock put his finger on the circle. Suddenly, a line began to radiate from the circle and rotate around the island. Large machinery began to rumble as well.
"Wait, is that the tower? So that means I might be rotating the tower!" said Brock. He sent Ash to look outside, and sure enough, the tower was rotating. Ash came back to tell them.
"'If you've forgotten the access keys, remember the tower rotation,'" all three of them said, repeating Atrus' words. The line stopped rotating at the dock, when it flashed red.
"Okay, now we need to access the tower. How can we do it?" asked Brock.
"How about by this passage?" said Misty. She was pointing to a picture on the library.
"You might be right, but how can we open that passage? Wait! If I touched the tower on the map and it rotated- Misty, try touching the picture," said Brock.
Misty touched the picture. The bookshelves in the library began to slide back and retract, forming a flight of stairs. The front entrance to the library slammed shut during the process.
"Now that's a clever way to hide a passage," said Brock. The three entered the passage and ended up in a room with an elevator. Since the elevator can only fit one, Brock went up for a look in the tower. In the middle of the trip up, the elevator rotated slightly counterclockwise. When the elevator door opened, he was faced with a ladder going up to a window looking out to the mast of the sunken ship. He walked to the other side and saw a ladder with a key leading up to a panel with the dates October 11, 1984, 10:04 AM; January 17, 1207, 5:46 AM; and November 23, 9791, 6:57 PM. He jotted the dates down on Atrus's note to Catherine, which he took from Misty earlier; he then took the elevator downwards. This time the elevator rotated clockwise. "This is amazing," Brock thought to himself as the elevator rotated to correct itself with the shaft. When the door finally opened, Brock was greeted by Ash and Misty.
"So what was up there?" asked Misty.
"I found these dates. I think they might help us in some way."
    "How?"
"Ash, grab the journal for Stoneship. Let's go to the building with the chair; I saw it from the tower and I think it's the key to these dates."
The three walked out to the main library and Ash grabbed the journal.
"How are we going to exit the library, though?" asked Ash.
"Well, try touching the image with the open library door. That should work," replied Brock. Ash touched the image of the open library door. The image swirled for a second, the bookshelf passage closed, and the library door opened.
"You're right, it did." The three then walked to the round building with the chair. Brock opened the door and sat in the chair.
"Guys, I was right. This machine looks like it will allow me to input dates. But I still have no idea of what I am supposed to be seeing," said Brock.
"In the back of the journal, there seems to be constellations listed," said Misty. Ash affirmed that there were constellations listed in the back of the book.
"So I am supposed to look at constellations, then? I'm seeing nothing still. What does that button do on the door?" In reply, Ash pushed the button. The bright lights of the room turned off to reveal stars on the walls. "Okay, I got it now. I think when Atrus made this building, it was designed to be a planetarium. Ash, will you give me the book?"
"Sure." Ash gave the book to Brock. He then turned the pages to see what constellations they corresponded to. After a while, Brock requested the lights be turned on again so that he could get off the chair.
"The dates map out the constellations for the bug, snake, and leaf. Around the well, I saw columns; three of them had these symbols. I think that's where we're supposed to go to solve the puzzle." The three agreed and exited the planetarium for a closer look at the columns. Brock put away the journal he held in the library, and then came out again. Misty approached the column with the flamingo symbol. As she did that, the flamingo glowed red. She touched the flamingo and it glowed green. She moved away from the column and approached Brock.
"I think I've figured it out. All the column symbols are red at first. But when I touch a red column symbol, the symbol became green. I think we need to make the bug, snake, and leaf green."
"You might be right, Misty. Let's try it." Brock approached the bug column first and changed it to green. Then he did the same with the leaf and the snake column. "Well, we made those columns green, but it's not working. Misty, try turning the flamingo column red and see what happens." Misty approached the flamingo column. The symbol grew green, and when she touched it, it was back to red. In the well, the model ship began to rise.
"I think that did it," said Brock. But as he said that, a louder noise came from the dock. The three went to check it out and were amazed by what they saw; the sunken ship rose from the water.
"That's very cool!" said Ash. "Let's have a look." The three went down to the dock to make sure the ship was stable. When it was, the three climbed aboard. They saw nothing of interest except a door on the back of the ship. Ash opened it and saw a chair with a book. "For an undersea room it sure is dry in here." He picked up the book and approached Brock.
"I found one of these. I think it could be the access to Stoneship."
"Let's open it up and see," said Brock. They flipped through pages of symbolic writing until they came upon the last page with a panel showing a flyby of a rocky world surrounded by an open sea.
"Well, I think we all know the drill by now. Touch the image and we'll be there. Who wants to go first?"
Ash volunteered and touched the image. His body flashed, and then dissolved into the image. Misty touched the image next and she too flashed and dissolved into the image. Brock was last; when he touched the image, he also flashed and dissolved into the image, and the book fell and closed itself. But just as the book fell, a figure appeared on the dock. It was Professor Oak.
"Hello? Anyone? Anybody?" Professor Oak was confused as to where he was. He then started to make his way to the library.

Chapter 3: A Stoneship Full of Shivers

Ash, Brock, and Misty arrived at the front of the stern end of a ship stuck to a rock. The sun was shining very brightly.
"It sure is hot in here," said Ash.
"Maybe it'll be cooler in the lighthouse," said Misty. The three slowly made their way into the lighthouse and entered through the broken window.
"Uh-oh," said Brock. When they entered, they realized that they were in trouble. "What are we going to do? The key is chained to the floor, the lookout is locked, and the shaft is flooded."
"Maybe we could find shelter somewhere else?" said Ash. They exited the lighthouse and looked into the rock tunnel. Much to their chagrin, the rock tunnel was flooded, and so was the stern tunnel. Dejected, all of them sat down on the ship.
"What are we going to do now?" asked Misty.
"I don't know. I'm tired just thinking about it," said Ash.
"Maybe that umbrella over there has an answer." Brock pointed to the umbrella and Ash and Misty looked. Ash then ran to the umbrella. Misty followed Ash. When they got there, they saw a row of buttons on a basin-like pedestal.
    "What is it?" asked Misty.
"I think it could be a switch or something like that." Ash pushed the first button. Loud gurgling sounds followed from the ship. He then tried the second button, and the same loud gurgling was heard, this time seemingly coming from the rock. He pushed the first button again. The loud gurgling was now heard from the ship. Brock then came up behind Misty and Ash.
"You guys should take a look at the passage on the ship." The three walked back to the ship and found the stern passage was open.
"Ash, the switches control pumps!" said Misty.
"You're right, Misty. If anything, I would guess one of them drains the rock passages and one of them would drain something else."
"But what's in here? Let's go check it out," said Brock. The three walked down the stern passage and opened the door. They then entered the room.
"It's spooky in here; I think we should-" Just then the group heard a swooshing sound. All of them quickly ran back up the passage. The door closed by the time they were all out of the passage.
"I think we need to light up the room before we go in there again," said Brock. "Try the second pump, Ash, and see what it drains." Ash ran to the umbrella pump station and pushed the second button. Loud gurgling sounds followed, and once Ash got back to the boat, the sounds stopped. The three examined the rock passages first, and sure enough, they were drained. They then entered the rock passage on the stern end of the ship.
"Hopefully this isn't as spooky as that other passage," Misty said worriedly. The light was getting dimmer each step they took into the passage. Eventually, the passage was so dark that they needed to practically crawl down the staircase. Then they saw a green light.
"It's probably another door," said Ash. They carefully walked toward the light. When Brock was in reach of the green light, he pushed it. Suddenly, they were bathed in a glow of light. The three entered the room. "This looks like a bedroom."
"You're right, this is a bedroom. Guess who it would belong to?" said Brock.
    "Sirrus?" replied the other two.
"Exactly. Let's see what we can scrounge around for before we go." Brock took to the desk, Ash to the drawers, and Misty to the bed. After a few minutes, they came into the center of the room.
"Okay, here's what I found," Brock started. "I found these pills and vials and syringes and whatnot; I believe Sirrus could have used them for some evil purpose. Misty, what'd you find?"
"Well, the bed's good for sleeping, and especially the sheets; I'm tempted to take one back to Myst so we can be warm. Besides some imager globes, I found nothing else. What about you, Ash?"
"I found this!" Ash then held up a red page.
Brock then said something. "Sirrus was right. There are red pages hidden in other worlds. So that means if there's a red page here..."
"...there's a blue page somewhere else!" said Misty. "What else do you have there, Ash?"
"I found this piece of cloth. I thought it looked strange compared with the other cloths in the drawer." Ash was holding a black piece of fabric with star and moon adornments.
"This looks familiar," said Misty. "I think I read something about the Black Ships in one of the journals, and they had a symbol similar to the ones on this cloth. Very spooky indeed."
"You think Sirrus could have allied himself with them?" added Brock.
"Don't know, but that might have happened," replied the other two. Satisfied with what they found, Misty took the red page and tucked it into her pocket. Brock put away the medicine equipment, and Ash put away the Black Ships fabric in an empty drawer, separate from the others. After Misty straightened the bed sheets, they exited the bedroom and carefully made their way up the stairs. When they exited the passage, they found it was raining outside.
"That weather changed quickly!" yelled Misty.
"At least we won't have to worry about the sun for a while," added Ash. "Brock, if there's a passage here, could there be another one on the other side of the ship?"
"You might be right, Ash." They walked to the front end of the ship using a series of steps, and they found another passage. They walked carefully down the stairs and found the green light as before. Misty pushed the green light and the door opened. The three then entered the room.
"Achenar's bedroom," all of them said quietly. As before, Ash took to the drawers and Misty to the bed, while Brock took to the strange devices on the wall. After a while, all of them gathered in the middle of the room.
"I'll start this time," said Misty. "I found a blue page. It was hidden among the sheets." Misty then put the blue page in the same pocket as the red page. Suddenly, the red page flew out of her pocket.
"Well, that's strange," said Brock. "It's like the red page has a mind of its own." Misty grabbed the red page and replaced it in her pocket. To her surprise, this time the blue page flew out of her pocket.
    "Very strange indeed," said Misty.
"Misty," Brock called out, "Try putting the pages next to each other on the floor. See what happens then." Misty placed both pages next to each other. The pages started to repel each other and move away. She tried putting them again next to each other, and the pages kept on repelling each other. "I think I know why the pages repel each other. Sirrus and Achenar are polar opposites of each other, Sirrus being civilized and Achenar being a freak. The fact that they show contempt for each other might be the reason the pages are repelling each other. If this happens with the pages, I happen to think it will happen with the books."
"So what should we do?" asked Ash.
"Good question," replied Brock. "Misty, I'll take the blue page, and you'll take the red." Brock was given the blue page, and he inserted it into his vest pocket. Misty put back the red page in her pocket. "Anyway, what did you find, Ash?"
"I found a bunch of old maps of unknown worlds and this little ripped-out page." Ash put the ripped page in the center of the room for all to see.

"Looks like it's a set of instructions. For what we do not know, but it will probably be useful. Ash, take it. It might help us later on," suggested Brock. Ash stuffed the torn paper in one of his pockets. "Well, as for me, I found that Achenar is a freaky, freaky guy. He's got skeletons and poisons and other stuff on that wall."
"Oh, Brock, that reminds me of this machine that you have got to see." Ash took the other two to the drawers and pushed a button. A rose suddenly popped out of a circular machine on top of the drawers. "I think it's another one of those holowhatever things."
"Holograms, Ash." Brock then examined the machine and pulled on the lever. Suddenly, the image of the rose transformed into a hideous skull. The three became very scared. Ash quickly turned off the machine.
"Achenar, what have you done?" Brock thought to himself. He then suggested that they should exit the room and try out the third pump. The three agreed, made their way up the stairs, and back to the stern end of the ship. The rain had stopped and the sun was shining brightly again. Ash then activated the third pump under the umbrella. A loud gurgling sound then followed.
"It looks like it's coming from the lighthouse," said Brock. The three made their way into the lighthouse and entered through the broken window. He was right; the pump drained the lighthouse. He then suggested that they should look at what is in the bottom. The three made their way toward the bottom, and they found a drain, as well as a wooden chest.
"Could there be treasure in there?" said Ash. Brock then tapped on the top of the wooden chest and then on the side.
"I don't know, but there's a valve there. The chest sounded full when I tapped it, but it might just be full of water. Try opening the valve." Ash opened the valve, and water came streaming out of the chest. When water stopped flowing out, Ash closed the valve. Brock then tapped the chest again. "This time, the chest sounds hollow, which means that I was right; it was full of water. If there is anything in there it might be very small. That gives me an idea."
    "What is it?"
"Since the chest was at the bottom all this time, I think that without all the water, the chest might be able to float; it is, after all, wooden. Turn on the second pump and see what happens." The three then climbed up the stairs and Ash exited the lighthouse to turn on the second pump. When he came back, he found the chest floating next to the chained key. Ash found the chained key was able to reach the padlock of the locked chest. He clicked open the lock, and the chest popped open to reveal another key. Brock grabbed the key.
"I believe this is the key to the padlock of the lookout," Brock said excitedly. He inserted the key into the padlock and clicked the lock open. "There we go!" The three climbed up the short ladder to get to the lookout.
"Now this is much more enjoyable than that hot, searing sun," said Ash.
"But what about that machine over there?" Misty pointed to a hand crank and battery.
"Misty, that might be the power source for the world. Let's try to crank it up as much as we can before we leave." Brock cranked up the power until the battery was fully charged. The three then exited the lighthouse to look around the ship. One of the things they had not looked at was the telescope. The three went up to take a look at the telescope.
"Certainly a very nice model," said Brock. The three took turns looking around, and all found that there were no signs of any prominent landmarks except for the lighthouse, located exactly at 135 degrees. Finding nothing else, they climbed back down. When they got back to the stern end of the ship, they found that the rock passages were now lit. They curiously made their way down Sirrus' passage to find anything they might have missed. On the third landing, Ash saw a panel marked with a red rectangle.
"What could this be?" Ash then touched the panel. The panel slid open to reveal a crawlway. The three crawled into the crawlway and eventually found themselves in front of a big compass rose.
"What are we supposed to do with this?" asked Misty.
"I don't know, but I have a feeling that this might be part of the final puzzle," said Brock.
"Hmmm..." Curious to see what would happen, Ash pushed the button for the north direction. The lights clicked off and a deafening alarm began to play. In panic, Ash exited by way of Achenar's crawlway, while Brock and Misty exited by Sirrus' crawlway. When they reached the tunnels, they quickly made their way out.
"Ash! Where are you?" shouted Brock and Misty.
"I'm over here," called Ash on the other side of the boat. He came over to the other side.
"That was very freaky," said Misty.
"It means, though, we may not have solved the puzzle," Brock interrupted. "This Atrus fellow seems to be very strict about everything, so he doesn't do everything willy-nilly. Remember when we saw the lighthouse through the telescope?" Misty and Ash nodded. "If 0 degrees mean north, then the beacon is at the southeast. So that might be the solution."
"Well, let's try it, then," said Ash.
"Try turning the power on first, though," said Brock. The three went on to the lighthouse to crank back the power. Ash was given the task, and when the power was full, they went back into the tunnels using Sirrus' side. They reentered the compass rose chamber, and Ash pushed the button in the direction of southeast. Undersea lights began to light up the chamber.
"I think that solved the puzzle," said Brock. They exited the chamber and ran back using Sirrus' hallway to the stern end of the ship.
    "Now what?" said Misty.
"We could go to that other dark chamber, maybe it's lighted now," said Ash.
"Sure," said Brock. This time, Brock went to the umbrella pump, pushed the first button, and ran back. The chamber was now open for access. The three made their way down the passage to the chamber entrance, and when they entered, it was lighted.
    "Cool," said Misty.
The three continued down the chamber until they found a smooth wooden table. When Ash touched the table, the center started to swell and formed a book. The book fell on its back onto the table. It was the Myst book.
    "Magical!" said Brock.
At this point, they knew what to do now: open to the moving image panel and touch it. It was only a matter of seconds before they arrived on Myst, and the sky outside was just starting to turn dark.
"So what do we do now?" said Ash.
"How about we sleep?" Misty replied. "I mean, it's nighttime."
"But where do we sleep?" questioned Brock.
"Let's all sleep in the log cabin. It will be peaceful there." The three agreed, and started to walk to the door. A figure suddenly leapt out of the dark.
"Hi there." Ash, Misty, and Brock, scared out of their wits, jumped back.
"Professor! Is that you?" called Ash. Professor Oak was a renowned researcher in the Pok?mon world and were their friend.
"Yes, it's me. Did you by any chance came here by touching a moving image in a book called 'Myst'?" said Professor Oak.
    "Yes," the three replied.
"Oh, great. We'll be stuck here forever," groaned the Professor.

    Chapter 4: Controlling the Rotation

During the night, the group of four shared the story of how they got to Myst. Apparently, the Professor also accidentally touched the image. In the morning, Brock took out the pages from Stoneship and added them to the books.
"I am Sirrus ... bring the... red... don't bring... the blue..." Sirrus' speech was still unclear.
"I am Achenar... bring the... blue pages... don't... red pages..." Achenar's speech was just the same as Sirrus.
"So both of these books contain a person?" asked Professor Oak.
"Yes, but it seems they are trapped in there," said Brock.
Brock also had decided that if the tower contains more keys to unlock other worlds, that it would be best to get all the keys now instead of wasting time. They took Catherine's note to Atrus, had Misty rotate the tower, Brock open and close the passages, Ash get the keys, and Professor Oak record the keys. It took approximately 30 minutes for them to retrieve the remaining three keys. Afterward, Brock and Ash set out to turn on all the marker switches that were not already on, and retrieve the book for Stoneship. When they got to the clock tower, however, there was a problem.
"What now? The switch is a distance across the water from here," said Brock.
"We can swim," said Ash. He was about to release his water Pok?mon when Brock stopped him.
"Wait, we don't even know what's in the water! What may be good for Atrus may not be good to us."
"I guess you're right, Brock," Ash said. "What if we use the access key?"
"That may be a good idea. Let's see, if I am right, it may be the 2:40 key. Turn the wheels to see what happens."
Ash turned the wheels, and by experimentation, he found that the large wheel controlled the large hand, and the small wheel controlled the small hand of the tower's clock. He continued turning until the large hand was at 8 and the small hand at 2.
    "It's doing nothing."
"Maybe if you push that red button," said Brock.
Ash came back to the console to push the button. Immediately, a set of gears began rotating and surfacing to form a bridge to the clock tower. Ash and Brock slapped hands, went to the clock tower, and flipped the final switch on. While they were there, Brock suggested that they set the other half of the key, the 2-2-1 part. They opened the clock tower and went in.
"There's a machine here," said Ash.
"This might be where we set the 2-2-1 part," said Brock. He looked to the side and found the numbers 2 and 1 on the gears, confirming his prediction. "Try the levers and see what they do."
Ash pulled each lever once, starting from the left. The gears now read 1-2-1.
    "Pull again?" asked Ash.
"Yeah, it's not quite 2-2-1 yet," said Brock. Ash was not looking at the levers, so the middle gear kept turning while he was holding the lever. "Stop!" yelled Brock. Ash stopped pulling, and the gears were now set correctly. The large counterweight on the side lowered, and the small half-gear rotated.
"I'm guessing it's properly set now," said Ash.
"That may mean we can now access another world," said Brock. The two went back to the library to tell Misty and the Professor their discovery.
    "What'd you find?" asked Misty.
"Come and see," said Brock. When the small gear rotated, he had examined the gear, and concluded that the vertical gear next to the dock was open. He led them to the gears, and sure enough, they were open.
"Professor, run back to the library and grab the journal with a gear. I feel we may have a great clue to this mystery," said Brock. The Professor grabbed the journal and ran back. When they came to the gears, they found a book. Misty opened it to the last page.
"Oh yay, another world," sighed Misty.
Ash, Misty, and Brock touched the moving image. Professor Oak was standing by and analyzing what would happen.
"When a book has an image, and the image moves, you can touch the image and be in another world. How very interesting, methodical, and complicated," he concluded. He then proceeded to touch the image and follow them.

    Chapter 5: Mechanically Challenged

The four of them arrived facing a set of large gears on an island connected to a fortress.
    "Very surreal," said Professor Oak.
"And here's another combination machine," said Ash.
"I guess the fortress is our only way in, then," said Brock.
They walked to the fortress using the track bridge. In the fortress, they took the right fork, leading to a throne room.
"This throne room is scary," said Misty.
"I can see why. Weapons are everywhere," said Brock.
    "Look, here's a jack-in-the-box," said Ash.
"Open it, Ash," said Professor Oak.
Ash cranked the handle of the box. He stopped cranking after a short time, and then a steel cobra popped out. Misty made a squeak.
"That... was... really scary..." said Misty.
The Professor sighed. "Let's just move on, shall we?"
They moved on to the connecting hallway. Along the way, they found an inaccessible shaft.
"I can see an elevator in there, but I don't think it's properly aligned," said Professor Oak.
"How about we use that red button over in the hall?" said Ash.
    "Good thinking there," said Brock.
All four walked to the hallway to push the red button. The metal walkway turned into a flight of stairs leading to a room. There, they found the rotational console for the elevator. Misty rotated the elevator with the handle, and soon they were back in the hallway when finished. They closed the room by pushing the button again.

    Meanwhile, on Myst Island...
    "Oof!"
    "Agh!"
    "Ooh!"
Jessie, James, and Meowth had arrived on Myst.
    "Where am I?" said Jessie.
"I think we might be in the world that was in the image," said James. He then saw the dock's marker switch, and attempted to turn it off.
"James, no! Something could happen and we could be changed forever," said Jessie.
"Okay, where do we go then?"
"Howsabout to this library I found?" said Meowth. Apparently he had sneaked out and explored the island when Jessie and James were arguing.
"Good idea. Maybe it'll be our place until help arrives," said Jessie.
"But Jessie, maybe help won't arrive," said James.
"Shut up and let's go to the library," said Jessie, dragging James away from the dock.

Since the elevator on Mechanical can only fit one, they had to send Ash for a look up. He pushed the "up" button first, and arrived in the top floor.
"Well, that's a start," said Ash from inside the elevator. He pushed the middle button next. After five seconds, he descended only half of a floor and found himself facing a concrete wall.
"Budge!" He tried to push the wall just in case there might be something there. After five tries, it was obvious to him that the wall would not budge. He pushed the "down" button and found himself at the ground floor.
"Ash, when you lowered the elevator, at first it was half-lowered. What happened?" asked Misty.
"I hit a concrete thing that would not budge no matter what I do," said Ash.
    "And the room above?"
    "It was empty."
"Well, why don't we move on, then?" said Brock.
They walked out of the elevator room to the hallway, where they continued on to find a nicely decorated throne room.
"This is a classy throne room," said Brock. "Look at this huge painting."
"Wait, what's that down there, by the lower-left corner?" asked Misty.
"Why, it's a secret panel!" said Brock. He touched the panel, and the panel slid up, alerted to his response. The group crawled their way into the chamber.
"What clever minds these people have," thought Professor Oak as he crawled in.
"Here's another red page," said Brock. He had looked over a chest full of gold coins. "Misty, do you want to take it?"
"Sure," accepted Misty. She put the red page in a pocket, making sure to keep the page flat. She also looked at the wine cellar as she took the page. She found another page, this time written in plain English.

    ==========
    Sirrus,

    Your greed sickens me!
    Your desire for wealth
    and plunder is never
    satisfied. I will instruct
    my subjects not to pay
    your new tax and you
    know they'll listen to me.

    Regards,
    Achenar.
    ==========

"Wait a minute, if Achenar said his subjects, did the brothers rule the ages?" said the Professor.
"Possibly, just by looking at this note," said Brock. "Keep the note. It might prove useful to record things on as well as determining the brother guilty of burning the Myst library books." Professor Oak folded the note and inserted it in a coat pocket.
"If there's a secret chamber here, there must be another on the other throne room. And if this throne room belongs to Sirrus, then the other one must be Achenar's," said Brock. All of them left the chamber and walked back to the other throne room. Brock examined the wall, and sure enough, he found another secret panel. He opened the panel, and the group entered the room one by one.
"Gee, it sure is dark in here," said Ash. "Maybe this switch will brighten up the room a bit more." He flipped the switch, and suddenly, a jolt of electricity surged through a cage. The room lit up for a second then darkened down.
"What... was that?" said Misty, frightened by what she saw.
"It's probably a cruel cage, designed for execution of someone Achenar does not want. And then there are all these bottles, which look like they contain poison. The blue page is here, too." Brock took the page and put it in her pocket.
"I wonder what's in this chest, though," said the Professor. He opened the chest, and a putrid odor filled the room.
"It's rotting flesh!" yelled Brock. Professor Oak immediately closed the chest, and all of them exited the room in a panic. To prevent the odor from spreading, Brock closed the panel to the room.
"That stench was awful!" said the Professor.
"I think we've seen enough of this world already. Now how do we get out?" questioned Misty. Ash was leaning on a machine, and he accidentally turned it on. A hologram lit up to say "FORTRESS ROTATION SIMULATOR CALIBRATING" for a few seconds, then went on to display an overhead diagram of the fortress.
"That's it! Maybe the combination to the panel we saw earlier are located on the other islands. Ash, try practicing the rotation. You'll need to rotate the fortress for us," said Brock.
Ash practiced with the rotation, and found that the directions are represented by a sound. To release the rotation lock, he pulled the left lever forward. By holding the right lever, he could adjust rotational speed, and to lock it to a direction, he pulled back the left lever. After a short while, Ash knew how to tell when to stop and what direction they were facing.
"Great job," said Brock. "But what about the real controls?"
"I theorize that to make the rotation setup easier, the controls must be located at the center. I've read the journal. The north and east islands were the remains of a mountain defense, but when it didn't work, Atrus built this fortress to protect this world's inhabitants from the invaders. Thus, for protection, they could also have hidden the rotation controls," said Professor Oak.
"But isn't the center of the fortress the elevator?" said Brock.
"True. Do you remember when Ash lowered the elevator halfway? Probably that way, if he exited the elevator before it lowered, he might be able to access the rotational controls," replied Brock.
"Well, let's try that then," said Ash. All of them went back to the central elevator and sent Ash for a look. This time, Ash pushed the middle button while he was up one floor and out of the elevator. The elevator lowered halfway, and Ash was able to gain access to the controls.
"Well done. Now all you have to do is rotate this thing 'round," Ash thought to himself. He seated himself at the controls and began the rotational process. It was harder for him this time, because there was no hologram to assist him. Instead, he had to rely on sounds that each compass direction represents. He successfully rotated the fortress east, raised the elevator, and descended. When he was down, the group was ready. They exited the fortress into the island.
"If I am correct, this island is the remnants of the watchtower of the mountain defense," said the Professor.
"Whatever," said the other three. They ran to a pedestal containing what seems to be half of a code.
"Oh, I know this code; it's for the machine on the south island!" said Misty. She memorized the code with the three triangles and a circle and the half circle. "But where's the other half?"
"Based on my instincts, that other half of the code should be on the north island," said Brock. They now agreed that this is what they can get out of the island and decided to rotate the fortress. Ash was sent again to rotate the fortress, this time to the north. Before they stepped out of the fortress, Ash appeared to notice something on Sirrus' telescope. He looked and saw a hanging skull from a shipwreck.
"What'd you see, Ash?" asked Misty.
"Um, a skull, hanging on a shipwreck, maybe," said Ash.
"Must be a punished enemy member," said Professor Oak. They stopped the chat and went out to the north island.
Just as Brock expected, the other half of the code was here, with the code being a rotated C and a rectangle and two triangles. After Misty had memorized the north island's code, they were now ready to go back to the south island with the full code. They reentered the fortress and went to the central room. Once again, the group sent Ash up to rotate the fortress. Ash rotated the fortress to face south. After the rotation, they all walked out onto the landing.
"I presume we enter the combination here," said Professor Oak.
"You might be right. Try it, Misty," said Brock.
Misty entered the combination, starting with the rotated C, rectangle and two triangles, three triangles and a circle, and the half circle. She also pushed the button. A stairwell began to form on the side, leading to a room containing the Myst book.
    "Yay!" yelled Misty cheerfully.
All four walked down the stairwell. There, they opened the Myst book to the last page and touched the moving image.

    Meanwhile, in the Myst library...
"Oh, Sirrus," called Jessie to the red book image.
"Achenar," beckoned James to the blue book image.
Just then, Ash, Misty, Brock, and the Professor appeared in the middle of the library and saw who was already in the library.
    "Ohh, no," said Jessie.
"TEAM ROCKET!" yelled Ash, Misty, and Brock. Once again the seagulls fled the island. Team Rocket had been their enemies since a time ago.
"Seriously, what are you three doing here?" asked the Professor.
"We touched a moving image and got here," said Meowth.
"Was it in a book?" asked Brock.
    "Yes, actually," replied James.
"Did it say 'Myst' on the cover?" asked Ash.
    "Yes," replied Jessie.
"Welcome to Myst Island. We're going to be stuck in this world until we find a solution."
    "Oh no!" said Team Rocket.

    Chapter 6: Selenitic Acts

It was night when they arrived; the Professor put away the gear journal and the group went to sleep. The next morning, Team Rocket and Ash, Misty, and Brock agreed to a temporary truce until they can get back to the Pok?mon world, where they all came from. They also added the pages they retrieved from Mechanical. Still, both books instructed them to bring more pages to their book and not to the others.
    "More pages?" said James.
"Yes, Sirrus and Achenar are trapped in the books, and the only way to get them out is if we get more of pages," said Brock.
    "Where are the pages?"
"They're on other worlds - at least the ones that weren't burned."
    "Where have you been?"
"Well, we've been to a world called Stoneship, and another called Mechanical. According to this key, we have the unknown world and Channelwood left. How about we go to the unknown world?"
"Brock, that sounds like a great idea," said the Professor. The group agreed, and they walked out to the rocket ship. Misty stepped up to open the door, but her efforts failed to open it.
    "It's locked."
"It might need power," said Ash. They looked around the rocket and found an electrical wire running just above the rocket towards a brick tower, then into a grove of trees, and then into the brick shack.
"If I am right, the generator for the power should be located there. Ash, come with me. James, you too." Brock gathered both of them and walked to the brick shack. When they got there, they entered the shack and walked down the stairs leading to a door.
"Looks like there's a room here," said Ash.
"It might be the generator," said Brock. He pushed the button next to the door and the door opened. A series of lights then clicked on, illuminating a row of generators and a control panel. The three entered the room and found themselves in front of the control panel.
"According to the key, 59 volts is what we need. I am guessing we need to use these buttons to generate the power." Brock pushed the first button. Both meters indicated 10. He then pushed the button below it. The meters now indicated 17. He continued to push a few more buttons. The meters continued to rise and rise; however, when the second meter hit a value over 59, the meter reset itself to 0.
"I think you just broke the meter," said James.
"Yes, I fear that's what I have done," replied Brock. "And there doesn't seem to be any way to reset it. Unless-" He thought hard for a minute and then arrived at a decision. "James, check the cable towers for a switch or something like that. Flip the switches and see what they do."
"There are more cable towers?" asked Ash.
"Yeah, I saw one on the side of the shack when we entered it. James, that should be the first one you go to."
"Okay," said James. "I will go to the towers." James exited the room and went outside.
"Brock, shouldn't you turn off these generators while James is outside?"
"That's a good idea. There's no telling what might happen if these generators are on and James is fiddling with the switches." Brock pushed the buttons. The first meter reset itself to 0, and the generators stopped humming. Meanwhile, James was outside on the first tower. He climbed up the tower and saw a switch in the up position. James pulled it down, and just to be sure, he tried to pull it back up. The switch reset itself to the down position. Satisfied, he climbed down the tower and made his way across the island. He climbed the second tower and saw another switch in the up position. He pulled it down and climbed down the tower.
"What is James doing?" asked Jessie.
"I presume it has something to do with the wires," replied the Professor. "I think we should just stay here."
"Well, I'm going to go grab the journal for the world I believe we are about to enter," said Misty. She left for the library and came back with the journal. Meanwhile, James had made it back to the generator room.
    "So?"
"Yes, there were switches on the towers. I flipped them down. The generator should be reset by now."
"Well, there is only one way to prove it." Brock pushed the first button. The generators hummed again with power, and both meters displayed 10. "It works, then. So, I think that each of these buttons generate a set amount of power. Just so we don't break the meter again, let's see how much power each button adds by turning them on and off one by one." Brock turned off the first button. The meters reset themselves to 0, and the generators stopped humming. He then turned on the button below it, and the meter rose to 7. He turned off the button and repeated the same process with the other 8 buttons.
"Based on my calculations, the three buttons with the highest units are buttons 4, 8, and 9, with 16, 22, and 19. But those only add up to 57. That means we need-"
    "2 more!" yelled out Ash.
"Exactly. Button 7 has 2, and I think that will do the trick." Brock turned on the buttons numbered 4, 7, 8, and 9. Both gauges rose to 59.
"There we go. Now all we have to do is open the spaceship door." The three exited the room and the shack and made their way to the spaceship. When they got there, Misty tried to open the door again. She succeeded, and the group boarded the spaceship.
"Okay, now that we're in the ship, what do we do?" asked Jessie.
"My guess is that there's some form of a combination," said the Professor. "If anything, I would think it's in that journal that Misty's holding."
"Misty, look for numbers, codes, anything that would suggest an order," commanded Brock. Misty quickly flipped through the journal, and she came across a page with a piano key arrangement and numbers.
"Let's see, there's a piano here, and the numbers suggest they are to be played in order." Misty approached the piano, and she played the five notes. Nothing happened. "Am I doing something wrong?"
"Maybe." Brock then looked around for another machine, and he found a view screen and five sliders beneath it, with a lever on the side. "Maybe we're supposed to enter the combination there." Misty then walked over to the machine and played with the first slider.
"I think you're right. I have an idea. Brock, hold down the key for number 1, and everyone hum the note." Brock was given the journal, and he made his way over to the piano. He pushed and held the key labeled number 1, and everyone hummed the note. Misty adjusted the first slider until she was satisfied with the sound it made.
"Now for number 2." Brock pushed and held the key labeled with number 2, and everyone hummed the note. Misty adjusted the second slider. She then repeated the process with the third, fourth, and fifth sliders with the keys labeled number 3, 4, and 5.
"I think I just need to pull the lever now." Misty then pulled the lever. A series of sounds began to play. After the sounds played, a book began to appear on the view screen. The book then opened to show a flyby of another world.
"Well done, Misty," said Ash. "I guess we touch the view screen now." Brock touched the view screen and disappeared with a flash. Ash, Misty, and Professor Oak then followed him into the view screen. However, Team Rocket hesitated before touching the view screen.
"Should we follow them?" asked Jessie.
    "I think so," replied James.
"Well, what are we waiting for?" The three touched the view screen and disappeared with a flash of light.

The group arrived in a replica of the spaceship.
"Is this another puzzle?" asked James.
"I don't think so," replied Brock. He walked over to the view screen console and pulled down the lever. Nothing happened. He then walked over to the piano and pushed a key. Nothing happened. "Nothing works here. I assume we just exit the spaceship now."
The group exited the spaceship. As they did, the spaceship door slammed shut behind them. Misty put down the journal and tried to open the door again, but her efforts failed; the door was completely jammed.
"Oh, well." She then picked up the journal again.
"What should we be doing here?" asked Meowth.
    "I don't think I know," said Jessie.
"I would guess we need to gain access to that door over there," said James.
"James, that's brilliant!" Jessie and Brock exclaimed. The group walked over to the door.
"Uh-oh. Does this look like a combination?" asked Ash. He was pointing at five sliders and a green button.
"If it's got many things and a button it probably is a combination in these worlds," replied the Professor. Ash tried to fiddle with the sliders and the green button. The sliders made noises of electrical buzzes, a train, running water, and wind howling, among other sounds, but he failed to open the door.
"Maybe the combination is to be found somewhere else," said the Professor.
"Yeah, I think you're right, Professor." Ash stopped fiddling with the levers and the group kept on walking. They turned paths when they saw a forest of trees and walked toward it. They then were surrounded by a grove of trees.
"Why would there be trees in this dry world?" asked Ash. Professor Oak then pointed to a stream. The stream made a very calming noise; it flowed towards a pit. Misty looked around, and she then saw a small tower. She pointed out the tower and everybody walked toward it.
"There's a blue page here," said Ash.
"It must belong to Achenar's book. Ash, give me the page." Ash gave Brock the page, and he tucked it into his shirt pocket.
"There's also a red button here." Ash pushed the red button. A silhouette of water droplets began to glow. "What do you think that button did?"
"I don't know, Ash, but leave it on. It might be a key to something."
    "The door?"
"Could be." Since there was nothing more to be found, the group left the trees and decided to head for the pit. When they got there, Ash spied another tower similar to the one in the trees. Brock and Ash walked over to the tower on a walkway over the pit, and they heard a deep rumbling sound.
"The rumbling must be the fire that we are standing on below the walkway," said Ash. Brock gave a nod, and Ash knew he was right. He pushed the red button. A silhouette of a crack began to glow, and the two left the pit. The group walked on, and this time, they encountered a giant clock and yet another small tower.
"Another tower," said Ash. He walked over to the tower and pushed the button. A silhouette of clock hands then began to glow. Just then, the group noticed that the clock does not seem to be working.
"The clock sounds like it's broken," said Jessie.
"I don't think we have yet to see a clock working anyplace in these worlds," said Meowth. The group then left the clock and continued on. As they walked, they noticed that the fog was getting thicker. Near a giant piece of pottery, the path split into two. The group decided to take the path to the right of the pottery, and they found the path led to a field of giant crystals.
"The crystals sound so soothing," said Misty. At the end of the path was another tower, and Ash pushed the red button. The silhouette this time was a crystal in water. Ash also noticed a red page, and gave it to Misty. The group left the area and walked back onto the main path. At the end of the path was a hole, and another tower. As before, Ash pushed the red button, and as before, a silhouette lit up, this time the silhouette was of wind coming out from a hole.
"It looks like we can go into the hole," said James.
"You're right, James," replied Brock. The group descended one by one into the pit.
"It's dark in here," said Ash as he reached the bottom.
"Maybe that switch over there is a light switch," said the Professor. Ash pulled the switch and a string of lights came on in the tunnel. The group walked to the other end of the tunnel and ascended another shaft.
    "Where are we?" asked Misty.
"We're in the central island of the lagoon. There's a machine up top; let's go check it out." Brock led everyone to the machine. He opened the machine, and he was faced with a console of a view screen, the five silhouettes from the towers with the crack silhouette highlighted, a readout, two direction buttons, and a button with a symbol on it. A static sound was also coming from somewhere in the machine.
"If I am right, this machine is supposed to control those receivers at the top," said Brock. He pushed the right direction button. The rest of the group looked up, and a receiver was indeed rotating; they confirmed it for Brock. Brock continued to push the right direction button. The view continued to pan to the right, but the static sound changed to mix into a sort of rumbling; Brock realized what this machine was meant for.
"This machine, I think, was meant for transferring the sounds over to here. Ash, remember how you pushed the button at each of the towers?"
    "Yes, so?"
"I think what you did is that you have activated some sort of microphone, and the transmitters are transmitting it over here; they just need to be set up."
"Brock, I think you might be right," said the Professor. "If you can get the sound of the fire pit here, can you get the sounds for the other four places here, too?"
"I think I can do that." He first adjusted the sound of the fire pit so that it would be as clear as he can get it. He then tried to adjust the sounds for the other four. "I assume we now push the symbol button." The sounds then came in order; first was the crystals, then the water, then the wind, then the fire, and then the clock.
"Could this be the combination of the door?" asked Misty.
"You're right, Misty; this could be what unlocks that door," said Ash. Brock closed the machine, and the group went back onto the main path by way of the tunnel. They then walked to the door. At the door, Ash set the combination of the sounds in order. He pushed the green button, and the sounds played in order. The door suddenly opened.
"I don't know about this. That hall looks spooky," said Jessie.
"Come on, Jessie, it's the only choice we have!" said James.
"Fine, then." The group entered the hallway. The hallway turned around the corner to reveal a room with a giant pod. Above the entrance to the room was a panel named The Selenitic Age.
"Well, at least we now know what the world is called," Misty said as she passed the entrance.
"I think the pod is our only way out of here," said Brock. One by one, they entered the pod. The pod had only one chair to seat one person, and a navigational control with a Forward, Backtrack, left, and right buttons as well as a speaker with a button. Professor Oak sat himself at the controls.
"I assume we go forward, since there is no other way to go." Professor Oak pushed the Forward button. Everyone lurched as the pod descended into a dark abyss. When the pod stopped descending, an open path was shown on the window; a sound was heard from the speaker; and a counter showed the letter N.
"Is this the way to go?" asked Ash. Professor Oak then pushed the left directional button, changing the counter to NW. After pushing the directional button to the right many more times, the pod ended up back at N.
"I take it that this pod can go in 8 directions, but the only one open is to the north. Yes, then, I assume it is the way to go." Professor Oak pushed the Forward button, and the pod moved north until it stopped. Another sound was heard from the speaker. Professor Oak rotated the pod again and found the only direction to go was west; he went forward that way. On the next stop, another sound was heard from the speaker, and after rotating the pod, the Professor went forward at north. The group then arrived at a junction.
"Uh-oh, where do we go next?" Professor Oak rotated the pod and found two directions to go: north and east.
"Oh no, I fear we cannot exit this horrible place," said James nervously. "It's getting hot in here, and-" James had pushed the button on the speaker. A sound was heard from the speaker.
"That sounds familiar!" Ash called out. "Maybe it's telling us to go east."
"Ash, you're right," added Misty. "Try it, Professor." The pod headed east. The same sound was heard again.
"Try it again, Professor," said Ash. The pod headed east once more. Another sound was then heard. "I think we go south now." The pod headed south.
"Ash, thanks for the help," said the Professor. From there, the pod went south once more, then west. A strange sound was heard after they went west.
"That sounded like west and south combined. Professor, try going southwest," said Ash. The pod headed southwest.
"You know, I think we'll be at the end of all of this soon," said Brock. The pod continued through the pathways. However, something began to change at the last pathway. The path continued into a tunnel, and the pod began speeding up. Finally, at a straightaway, the pod slowed down and stopped.
"I think that's the end," said Brock. The pod door opened, and the group joyfully exited the pod, which was getting stuffy. Ash then noticed the Myst book, and everyone ran towards the book. Everyone touched the image panel except Brock and Misty.
"Do you have your page, Brock?"
    "I do. Do you?"
"Yes, I do. And I have the journal, too." They both opened the book to the moving image and touched it. Soon everyone was back at the Myst library.

Chapter 7: The Channel is in the Wood

A new day dawned upon the island of Myst. The group was sleeping on the wooden floor of the library. When they woke up, Misty and Brock decided to add the pages to the books. They then listened to what Sirrus and Achenar had to say.
    "Uh-oh." Misty became concerned.
    "What is it?" asked Ash.
"Sirrus and Achenar just said that if we free the wrong brother, we'll be killed."
"Oh no!" Team Rocket started to worry too.
"Hold on, something is not right," added the Professor. "Why would they kill us?"
"For one, Achenar is very destructive, and for two, Sirrus looks demonic," replied Brock.
"Whatever reason they have, I don't think we have the full story yet. I would think that another page for the books would help us decide."
"You're right, Professor. We haven't visited Channelwood. Maybe we'll go there and get the final pages."
"I saw a safe in the cabin; I believe that's where 7-2-4 comes in," added Misty. The group exited the library and walked to the cabin. Ash opened the door and everyone walked in.
"Here's the safe," Ash pointed. He entered the combination 7-2-4 and pulled the handle. The safe opened to reveal a box of matches. "Well, that's nice, but what are we supposed to do with the matches?"
"I believe we are supposed to light this boiler," said Brock. Ash brought the matches to Brock. Brock took a match, struck it, and lighted a kindling box in the bottom.
"It still looks like it's off," added Ash.
"Maybe we need to turn the wheel," said Brock. He turned the wheel a third of a turn, and a fire roared at the bottom of the boiler.
"And this does what?" asked Jessie. A thundering clap then shook the cabin.
"Uh-oh, what could that be?" asked Meowth. Misty ran outside to see what it was. Seconds later, another thundering clap was heard, and Misty saw the giant tree rising.
"Hey Ash, Brock, come look at this!" Ash and Brock came out. The Professor and Team Rocket followed. Another thundering clap was heard and the tree rose again. Everyone was amazed. Seconds later, another thundering clap was heard and the tree rose again, this time revealing a niche in it.
    "It's an elevator!" yelled Ash.
"I believe it may lead underground," said the Professor. The tree rose once more, and the niche was fully revealed. "I think the elevator will continue to rise until it reaches some height. Let it rise, and turn off the boiler. I think the elevator will go down once that happens."
Brock followed the Professor's advice, and the tree elevator kept on rising until it could not rise anymore. The group went back into the cabin and saw the boiler was at maximum pressure. Brock completely turned the wheel back, and soon hisses and thuds were heard. The group ran to the tree and indeed, the tree elevator was dropping. Since the elevator can fit only two, Ash and Brock went down first. They entered the niche when it was on ground level, and the elevator dropped them to a room with a book and another wheel.
"That must be the Channelwood book!" said Ash.
"You're right. There's a wheel here; I presume if we wanted to go back up, we would have used this wheel. But we need to get the others right now; we need to go back up. Ash, I'll turn the wheel, and get Misty in the elevator. Tell the others the elevator will come up empty next time, and to come in when the elevator is at ground level. Then I'll turn back the wheel and the elevator should come down. Got it?
"Yeah, I got it." Ash remained in the elevator while Brock turned the wheel. The rest of the group was still standing near the elevator. Ash rose to ground level, and Misty got into the elevator. The elevator then descended, and came back empty. Jessie and James got in next, and the elevator came back one last time to get Professor Oak. Once they were all in the chamber, everyone opened the book to the image and touched it.

The group was standing on a walkway.
"I think we're here," said Ash.
"But where should we go next?" asked James.
"How about up?" Misty pointed to the huts above the trees.
    "How?"
    "Elevators!" yelled Ash.
"Good thinking. But where are they?"
"Over there." Ash pointed to one behind them. They walked over to the elevator, and Ash, Brock, and Misty went into the elevator and closed the door. However, when they pulled the handle, the elevator did not move.
    "It's not moving," said Misty.
"Maybe it needs power," said Ash.
"I think you're right, Ash," added Brock. "I saw pipes leading to this elevator. I think that might be the power source for the elevator."
"Okay then." The three exited the elevator. "The elevator needs power. We're going to trace the pipes and see if they lead somewhere."
"We're coming too!" said the rest of the group. They walked along the pipeline when they saw a junction.
"This junction points the other way. This leads me to believe that there is more than one device that needs to be powered," said Brock. "I'm going to point the junction over to the elevator." Brock turned the junction to the elevator. They continued following the pipes, and turning junctions toward the elevator. The pipe led to a hose and eventually to a shack at the top of a rock. The group walked towards the windmill and the shack.
"I guess this is where the power source comes from," said Ash. The hose led to a faucet, which led to a tank. Misty opened the faucet, and the group heard bubbling as water started to flow into the hose. The group followed the gurgling of water through the pipes as it flowed towards the elevator. When they got there, the elevator seemed to have power. Ash, Brock, and Misty entered the elevator and tried to go up just to make sure.
"Pull the lever, Ash," said Brock. He pulled the elevator, and the elevator began to rise. Soon the three were at the hut levels.
"Ash, do you want to go down and get the others?" asked Brock.
"Sure, why not?" Ash descended with the elevator, and Jessie, James, Meowth, and the Professor went in. The elevator rose and reached the upper level; they exited the elevator.
"Now where do we go?" asked James.
"Good question. I saw a spiral staircase while we were following the pipes. I snuck out and tried to open the staircase door; it was locked. I think if we can find the place where the staircase goes up and open the door from that side, we can probably get down to ground level and adjust the pipes easily," said the Professor.
The group walked along the huts to try to find the place where the staircase leads. Along the way, they found pottery and wood fragments.
"Do you think people could have lived here?" asked Meowth.
"Absolutely. How else could they have crafted the pottery?" replied Jessie. The group kept on walking and they eventually found a landing with an elevator and a closed door. Ash tried to open the door, only to find it locked.
"This is where the spiral stairs lead," said Ash, "but how do we open the door?"
"Wait, I think I remember reading something like this in the journal," said Brock. "The control for the door is located in a hut just opposite the landing."
"Over there?" Ash pointed to a hut with a lever.
"That's the one, I think. Run over there and see if you can find anything. Ash walked to the hut, keeping it in view. When he got there, he saw a lever.
"Pull the lever..." He pulled the lever. The door on the landing opened. "...and the door opens." Ash ran back to the landing.
"Well done, Ash," said the Professor. "I surmise the elevator needs power, too, so I would guess pointing the junctions here would power the elevator." James decided to test the idea. He went down the staircase and opened the bottom doors. He pointed the junctions toward the staircase, and then went back up.
"Try the elevator now," said James. As before, Ash, Misty, and Brock tested the elevator. They were able to get to the third level, and as before, Ash came down to get the other four. Once everybody was at the upper level, they decided to walk towards a hut behind the elevator.
"This area looks very haunting," said Jessie.
    "Why?" asked Misty.
"We're high up, for one thing. But there is something else that bothers me; I just don't know what it is."
"Let's just walk," said Brock. They continued walking towards the hut. Misty opened the door and the group entered the room.
"This room's very elegant," said Jessie.
    "Sirrus' room?" said Ash.
"It probably is," said Brock. The group started looking around.
"Here's the red page," the Professor called. He had found it on an end table looking out to the windmill. Brock took the page and tucked it into his pocket. Meanwhile, Jessie and James were looking around the bed. Both were opening and closing bed drawers when James found a ripped note.
"Look, there's a ripped note here." He then called out to the group. "I found something!"
    "What is it?" asked Misty.
"This note." James laid the note out for all to see.

"Hey, isn't that part of the other ripped note?" asked Ash.
"You're right- do you have it with you?" asked Misty. Ash then searched his pockets. He came up empty.
"Oh, no- I might have left it on Myst Island."
"Take the note anyway. We'll piece it together later." The group decided there was nothing more to be found in the room, and they left the room. They then walked to the hut in front of the elevator.
"There's a black door here," said Meowth.
"We can also bypass the hut if we want to," said the Professor. "Who's going in?" A chorus of voices agreed that they all wanted to go in. Professor Oak opened the door, and one by one they went in.
"Well, I knew I was right," said Jessie. "This looks freaky."
"There's a table with spikes, and ceremonial masks everywhere. I agree, Jessie, this looks freaky," said Ash.
"Looks like there's an exit back there," said Misty. They all walked quickly towards the exit. Suddenly, a blinding light came from all around the hut. Then a picture of Achenar appeared above the altar; Achenar started chanting.
"Achenar?" Ash and everyone else was caught by surprise. Achenar chanted for a short time; then he stopped, and the light levels returned to normal.
"That was a scary chant!" cried James. He did not realize that he was backing towards the spiked table. When his behind hit the side of the table, the surface of the table folded down; a cylinder then formed about the table surface. The cylinder had blood on it, and a strange smell filled the room. Ash, Brock, Misty, and the Professor realized what it was.
    "It's rotting flesh!" yelled Misty.
"Again?!" yelled Ash. The two opened the rear exit and ran. Brock and Professor Oak followed. Team Rocket stayed a little bit and took a sniff.
"EWWWW!!!" The three were revolted by the stench of the rotten flesh and ran out the rear exit as well. As the rear exit slammed, the image of Achenar was activated again. The group gathered at the bridge to the final hut.
"What was that machine anyway?" asked James.
"I'm thinking the machine is another execution machine," said the Professor.
"If it is, Achenar must have enjoyed torturing and killing the people," added Ash.
"Well, guess who would reside in that hut?" said Misty. The others replied resoundingly with, "Achenar."
"What is in there anyway?" asked Jessie.
"Well, probably the blue page. So we have to go in there," replied Brock. The group then went one by one into the hut.
"There's the blue page, on a strange machine," said Misty. She took the blue page and tucked it into her pocket. "I wonder what the machine does, though." Misty pushed the first button on the machine. An image of Achenar then appeared on a view screen protected by a crisscross lattice. He repeated the same chant that they heard in the execution hut.
"Well, that's a start. Try the second button, Misty," Brock called out. She pushed the second button, and an image of Achenar's mouth uttered another chant. When it was finished, she tried the third button. This time, Achenar's face appeared again and uttered another chant. She then tried the fourth button. Instead of Achenar, this button displayed Sirrus, speaking in plain English.
"I hope I pushed the right button, my dear brother. What a very interesting device you have here. I'm not erasing anything important, am I?" Laughter and a short pause followed. "Remember, he is preparing. Take only one page, my dear brother."
"Sirrus? What is he doing here?" asked Ash.
"I don't think I want to know," said James.
"Neither do I. Let's get out of here." The group then decided that they would try to find the Myst book and get out of the world. They exited Achenar's room. When they got to the execution hut, they decided to bypass the hut and use the walkway. However, as soon as they passed the black door, the execution hut imager activated and this time, Sirrus was speaking.
"So that's what the machine was for in Achenar's hut," said Ash. The group paused and then ran to the elevator. Ash, Misty, Brock, and Professor Oak got on the elevator first. The elevator returned with Ash, and this time Team Rocket got on and descended. As they were descending, Sirrus' voice trailed off in the distance with "Take only one page..." Once they were at the landing, they went down to ground level by the staircase.
"Where do we go next?" asked James.
"Hey, look there." Ash pointed to an elevator in the distance. The group ran to an end of the walkways, only to find the pipe here was broken and there was no walkway. The group ran to another end and found a switch.
"I'm guessing the switch needs power," said Ash.
"I think you're right, Ash. Let's find the power junctions," replied Brock. They walked along the pipe and pointed the junctions toward the switch. When they were sure they heard water gurgling to the switch, they came back to the switch. Ash pulled the switch, and a walkway section began to form near the switch. Everyone became impressed. The group then walked to the elevator.
"Hey, isn't this the pipe that leads to that dead end?" said Ash.
"Why, it is. Look there - that's the dead end," added the Professor. Ash and Brock then followed the pipe. The pipe led to a crank. Brock turned the crank, and suddenly, the broken pipes reconnected themselves.
"Impressive," said Ash. Both then ran to point power to the newly reconnected pipe. When they came back, they were ready to go up the elevator. As before, Ash, Brock, Misty, and Professor Oak went up first and Team Rocket was next. Sure enough, they had found the Myst book. The group happily opened the book to the moving image and touched it. Instantly they returned to the Myst library. It was night in Myst, and because of that, they decided to sleep. The next morning, they awoke to a dark sky.

    Chapter 8: Recapping Myst

Outside the Myst library, a storm started to brew. A heavy rain began five minutes later.
"Looks like it's going to be a bad storm," said Brock.
"Do you want me to close the door, Brock?" asked Misty.
"Why not? After all, it's raining outside."
Misty touched the panel with the retracted bookshelves. The library door slammed shut and the bookshelves retracted, forming a tunnel entrance.
"So what do we do now?" asked the Professor.
"Well, we do have the pages and the books, so why don't we put them in their books?" suggested Ash.
"I think Ash here might have a great idea," said Jessie.
    "Okay then," replied Brock.
Brock and Misty took out the pages that they brought from Channelwood. Jessie and James inserted them into the books. Sirrus then began to speak.
"Well done. But I need one more page. It-"
"Are you sure you're not guilty?" asked Professor Oak.
"Yes. I am very sure. You've heard Achenar and how twisted he is. Would you release him? I think not," replied Sirrus. "To get the last page, you need to use pattern 158 in the fireplace. Take the red but not the blue page. Also, do not open the green book. It is also a trap. I'll reward you if you release me."
    "Well, anyone?" said the Professor.
"Guys, don't release Sirrus yet. I think Sirrus might be lying," said Brock.
    "What about Achenar?" asked Jessie.
They opened the blue book to the last page. This time, Achenar said that Sirrus is the guilty one. Achenar also said that Sirrus killed Atrus. He also asked for the blue page from the fireplace, and to not touch the red page or the green book. After a while, Brock made a decision.
"James, memorize pattern 158. Bring the green book here. Do not bring any of the pages."
"Okay," James accepted. He opened the pattern book and memorized pattern 158. After a while, he entered the fireplace, tapped the pattern in, and rotated the fireplace. In the fireplace, James took the green book, closed the fireplace, and rotated it back out. He exited the fireplace into the library. Moments later, James opened the green book to the last page. An image of a man suddenly appeared on the last page.
"Who the devil are you? No, wait; don't come here to D'ni yet. I have many questions for you, my friend, as you no doubt have for me."
    "Who are you?" asked James.
    "My name is Atrus."
    "Wait, didn't Sirrus kill you?"
"My sons must have lied! I'm trapped in D'ni, and I cannot escape without a white page. I need that white page."
Now everybody was stuck with a dilemma.
"If Achenar said that Sirrus killed Atrus, then he must have lied. And- Misty, what are you doing?" said Brock.
"I needed to look up pattern 158."
Just then, a torn piece of paper fell out of the book. It was the other half of the ripped note.
"Wait, isn't this the other part of the note?" said Brock.
"Oh, my goodness, yes it is. Let's see what it says," said Misty. "Ash, give me the other half of the note." Ash gave the other half to Misty and laid the note to read what it says.

    Marker Switch Vault Access
    Island of Myst

The vault is located in very plain view on
the island of Myst, and access can be
achieved very easily if the simple
    instructions are followed. First locate
each of the Marker Switches on the island.
Turn every one of these switches to the
"on" position. Then go to the dock and
as a final step, turn the Marker Switch
    there to the "off" position.
    ==========

"I wonder what that vault has," said Brock.
"Professor, why don't you go check it out?" asked Misty. Professor Oak accepted and went to the dock. He turned the switch, and the vault opened - with a white page inside.
"Oh, my..." He took the page and went back to the library. "Guess what's in the vault?"
    "No, what?"
"This." He held up the white page for all to see.
"Atrus wasn't lying after all about that white page," said James.
"'Take only one page, my dear brother...' Sirrus and Achenar were collaborating!" said Jessie. Everyone in the room soon realized Jessie was right.
"That page may be what Atrus needs." said Ash.
"Guys, if I'm correct, using the green book should be our move. If I'm wrong, then Sirrus may help us. Achenar lied about Atrus, and Sirrus did not mention any murder," said Brock. They all agreed to give the white page to Atrus. Brock gave the white page to Ash, and James opened the green book.
"Did you find the missing page?" asked Atrus.
"This page?" asked Ash, waving the page over the image.
"Yes, that's the one I need."
"Okay," replied Ash. He then touched the image and disappeared. Everybody soon followed Ash. The green book then fell onto the library floor.

    Chapter 9: Atrus in D'ni

Everybody linked to D'ni using the green book. They were now all in one chamber where there wasn't much else, but a man in solitary confinement.
"He must be Atrus," said Brock.
Everybody approached Atrus. Once they were close enough, they gathered around his desk.
"Ah, my friends. I didn't expect so many of you here," said Atrus.
"What were you expecting?" asked Professor Oak.
"That does not matter. Anyway, did one of you bring the page?"
    Everybody looked at Ash.
"Okay, okay, here's your white page," said Ash.
"Thank you. I have a very difficult choice to make."
Atrus put the white page into the book, and the page soon merged with the book again. After staring for a few minutes, he finally decided on his course of action.
"My sons have betrayed me. I know what I must do. I shall-"
"Wait, what are you going to do?" asked Jessie.
"This book links to Myst. The white page that you gave me fixed the link, and I will need to use this book. I'll be gone for less than an hour. Do not follow me."
    "But-"
His last word was an echo as he vanished.
"Great, now what do we do?"
"We can eat," Brock said, while holding a basket of fruit. When Atrus linked away, he was able to take the bowl from his desk.
"Well, dat's a good idea!" yelled Meowth.
Everybody took two pieces of fruit, leaving two for Atrus. They were finishing their first piece when Atrus came back.
"It is done. My friends, I have many questions for all of you. But my writing cannot wait. I fear that my long delay may have caused a catastrophic event on the world in which my wife Catherine is being held hostage."
    "Held hostage?" asked Ash.
Atrus then explained how he had created the red and blue books for greedy travelers. His sons created a plan to get the books by trapping Catherine and Atrus himself. Sirrus and Achenar were almost immediately trapped in the books because of their vision problems. Before Atrus trapped himself, he removed pages from the trap books holding both of his sons and scattered them all over the remaining ages. Achenar had deliberately hidden the white page that he needed in the Myst switch vault.
"And I'm sorry, all I can give you as a reward is Myst and the books that are there. Feel free to explore at your leisure. I hope you are satisfied with your explorations. You will no longer have my sons to deal with."
After a brief pause, Atrus began to talk again.
"Oh, and one more thing. I am fighting a foe much greater than my sons could ever imagine."
"Do you need help?" asked Brock.
"Yes, actually. At some point in the future I may require your assistance. Until that point, please enjoy your Myst explorations."
Atrus also saw the almost-empty bowl of fruit that Brock held.
"Take the fruit bowl. You will soon have a way to get as much food as you need."
Everybody else said thank you as they accepted the fruit bowl.
"To go to Myst, use the linking book," said Atrus.
Everybody except Atrus linked to Myst using the book. When they arrived, there was the smell of burnt wood, and the storm had passed, with a new day just dawning.
"Hey, where'd the blue and red books go?" asked Jessie.
"My guess is that when Atrus linked back to Myst, he took the matches from the cabin, placed the books on the shelves, and burned them," said Professor Oak.
"Atrus was right. We won't have to deal with the brothers anymore," Brock said.
"I found something else, though," said James.
    "Hmm?"
"I think it's a journal to another world."
Brock looked at James and the book.
"That's the Rime journal! Professor, Ash, and James, come with me to the log cabin. We'll figure this out. Misty, Jessie, and Meowth, stay in the library in case Atrus comes. Don't close the library door."
Brock, James, Ash, and the Professor walked to the cabin to re-examine the book.

    Chapter 10: Rime-ing Fun

In the log cabin, they opened the journal and began reading.
"There's something else here," said James.
"Yeah, it looks like the holo-whatever imager," said Ash.
"This might be the combination for the book," said Brock.
All of them left the log cabin and headed to the imager chamber.
"I think the second number applies here since 2735 is not one that can fit."
"Okay, good thinking," replied the Professor.
Brock entered the number 40 onto the console. The blank imager window was then replaced with the topographical extrusion test.
"Well, that's a start, but what is that blinking?" said Brock.
    "I'll check," said James.
The blinking came from behind the imager. A button was flashing.
"I found a button!" said James.
Curiously, James pushed the button. The imager number switch slid open to reveal a diagram of the rocketship pathway.
"James, way to go!" said Brock.
"No problem, glad to help," replied James.
All four went to look at the diagram.
"There could be another button here," said Ash. He found a button on the diagram and pushed it. The circle began to rotate, and then the number switch slid back up.
"Since this is the rocketship pathway, why don't we check out that pathway for any changes?" said Professor Oak.
Everyone else nodded, and they walked out of the imager chamber and onto the rocketship pathway. On the side, they found a well.
"Ash, why don't you enter the stairwell?" said James.
"Sure," replied Ash. He entered the stairwell and walked down a long hall to a machine with four slots.
"This might be the place to enter the number 2735," Ash thought.
Ash inserted the number 2-7-3-5 onto the machine and pressed a button. The machine then began to rise.

    Meanwhile, in the library...
"When are those guys gonna come back?" said Meowth. He was standing near the center of the library. Suddenly, the center rings of the library floor began to rise, creating a short pedestal with two slots. One of the slots contained a book. "Hey, it's a book!"
"Wonder where it leads to?" said Misty.
"Hi, guys," said Brock, who was standing outside the library. "I see you found the book. That book leads to Rime."
"Why don't we see what it is instead of just discussing it?" said Jessie.
    "Sure," said Misty.
Jessie opened the book to the last page. One by one, all of them touched the moving image, and now they were in Rime. They were standing outside.
"It sure is cold in here," shivered James.
"Well, maybe that hut has something to warm us up," said Misty. The group proceeded to the hut and closed the door.
"Hey, look! There's a furnace here," said Ash.
"Yes, it is, now will you just turn it on? It's freezing out here!" yelled Jessie. Ash pushed the button to the furnace, but nothing seemed to happen.
"Maybe there's no gas. I mean, a furnace needs something to burn in order to heat up, right? I'm going to check for valves outside," said Brock. He went out and looked around the hut, and found a valve. He turned the valve and gas began to flow. Brock went back inside and closed the door.
"I think now it has gas. Ash, try the furnace again," said Brock. Ash then pushed the furnace button again. A fire began to burn in the furnace. Within minutes, the room glowed with a bright red hue.
"Ahh, that's much warmer," said the Professor.
"There's another door here," James pointed.
"Hmm. James, you're right, but how do we open it? There does not seem to be a handle or-" As Brock was examining the door, the door slid open to reveal a foggy tunnel.
"Impressive," replied the Professor. "Everything here works with a touch of your hand. Wish we had this technology back in the Pok?mon world."
"If I'm right, at the end of the tunnel there could be some answers behind the mystery. Why don't we go into the tunnel?" said Ash.
"I agree, let's go!" replied Brock and Misty. The three entered the tunnel and walked.
"Well, maybe I'm wrong. There's nothing but fog in here," said Ash.
"But there is that little light," added Brock. The three ran towards the light and found another door.
"Uh-oh. Another elevator? Atrus built too many elevators in his worlds," said Ash.
"Well, you can't blame him," explained Brock. "He was first and foremost a father to Sirrus and Achenar. He allowed them access to his worlds. And when they destroyed them, security became a concern to him. Still, with the power that he wields over books, it's no surprise that something there needs to be protected."
"Well, that's all fine and good," replied Misty, "but what is above? Let's go in the elevator."
"Right!" exclaimed the other two. The three opened the door, and they confirmed it was an elevator. Brock pushed a button, causing the elevator to close and rise. Once the elevator stopped rising, the door opened and revealed a window with two levers. Ash played around with the levers, and he found he was able to create astonishing effects on the Rime sky.
    "That's power!" exclaimed Ash.
"Yeah, but what else can we do?"
"How about this button right here?" Misty pointed to a button on the side of the elevator.
"You're right, Misty. Ash, come in to the elevator. I have a feeling that button does something to the elevator." Ash came back into the elevator, and Misty pushed the button. The elevator rotated to reveal a small niche with a writing desk. The three entered the niche and looked around.
"There doesn't seem to be much here," said Ash.
"Indeed. Look here." Brock pointed to a book and a note. The three opened the journal and began reading on the elevator. They then discussed the journal after they had finished reading.
"This journal seems to recount a personal event - Sirrus and Achenar helped Atrus built the light towers that create the lights we saw when Ash fiddled with those levers," said Brock.
"I think we should go down now since there does not seem to be anything else we can find here." said Misty. Everyone agreed. Ash was just about to push the rotate button when Brock stopped him.
"Wait, Ash. If we originally went into the elevator that way, went up and saw the machine, then rotated it to see the bedroom, wouldn't it make sense to push the down button and find out where it leads?"
"Good idea, Brock." Ash pushed the down button, and the elevator descended. When the door opened, they were faced with a tunnel to another door. The three walked to the door, and Ash opened it.
"This room's strange," said Ash as he entered the room. The room had a large machine at the far end, and a bed and a cabinet flanking the entrance.
"I wonder what that machine is," said Misty. The three ran to the machine. Ash then was faced with five crystals. He found that he could wave his hand over the crystal to change its color and touch the crystal to change the shape.
"This is the crystal viewer!" exclaimed Brock. "In the journal, Catherine had a dream. She dreamt of viewing Riven, another one of the worlds. Maybe we could view it here as well."
"But how? It might take forever to find the combination," said Ash.
"Or it might take only a minute." Brock then pointed to a note on the cabinet. Ash ran to get the note, and they analyzed it.

    ==========
    It is real. The work
    of your hands, the
    touch of my dreams.

    I've left my
    dream for you.

    I'm only yours,
    Catherine
    ==========

"Maybe to view Catherine's dream all we need is to set the viewer to display these crystals," said Ash.
"You could be right, Ash," said Brock. "Let's try it." Ash changed the crystals to Catherine's combination. After changing the crystals to Catherine's combination, Ash pushed the red viewer button. The viewer then displayed a picture of a world with a bridge and some plants.
"Could this be Riven?" said Ash.
"It very well could be," said Brock. "Maybe when Atrus was busy, Catherine discovered the combination for Riven by herself." The three stayed for a little bit more to see what they can get out of the image, and then left the viewing room. They then used the elevator to get back to the original tunnel and the main room.
"Did you find anything?" asked the Professor.
"We found some personal notes about Atrus and Catherine, and that's about all that we can find," said Brock.
"We also found this cool crystal viewer that lets us display other worlds," added Ash.
    "Sounds very impressive," said Jessie.
"Should we go back to Myst? After all, this is what we could find on this world," said Brock. Everyone agreed, and one by one, they linked back to the Myst library.

    Chapter 11: Two Worlds

It was a very clear day in Myst. Ash was out playing with his Pok?mon, and everyone else was discussing the adventures they had through the worlds of Myst. Suddenly, Atrus came out of the library with his pen and two books. Brock was the first one to notice.
"Hey guys, Atrus is here," called out Brock. Ash put away all his Pok?mon and everyone gathered near the front of the library.
"Atrus, what are you doing here?" asked Ash.
"I came to talk to you and to find out where you came from."
    "What about your work?"
"It can wait. So where did you come from?"
"I think Professor Oak here will be able to explain that."
"Okay. We came from the Pok?mon world. In this world lives a variety of creatures called Pok?mon."
"As people, we live in coexistence with these creatures. Some of us just look at Pok?mon, and some of us capture them," added Misty.
"While some of us capture Pok?mon to collect them, some of us also engage in friendly competitions called battles. In that case, we use our Pok?mon to try to defeat each other in battle," added Ash.
"But with all this power can come evil, and we do try to fight off those who are using Pok?mon for evil purposes, " added Brock.
    "Interesting," said Atrus.
"We came here by a complete accident. We touched an image in a book and wound up here, on Myst. We've told you our story, what about yours?" asked the Professor.
"In this universe, we write worlds called Ages and we can Link to them by using Books, as you all have done. Just like your creatures, there are some who use this power for evil, like what happened a long time ago when the D'ni flourished. I am a survivor of the civilization's fall, and I've been trapped by my evil father in the chamber you visited."
"So we do have some things in common," said Professor. "We have magical powers that can be used for good and evil."
"Yes, we do," said Atrus. "Can you demonstrate your powers?"
"Sure we can, but we might need a big open space to do it. Why don't we go to Selenitic?"
"Sure enough, if you need open space," said Atrus. "I will open the Book, and then we can Link to there."
The group went to the rocket ship, and Atrus set the rocket so that the viewing bubble displayed Selenitic. All of them touched the bubble and linked away to Selenitic. When they arrived, they walked out to the large clock.
"Now, would you care to show your powers?" asked Atrus.
"Okay. Why don't we let Ash go first with his Pikachu?" said the Professor.
"All right," said Ash. He commanded Pikachu to aim a Thunderbolt attack towards the top of the large clock. A bolt of thunder flashed on the top for a brief second, distorting the clock chime sounds. After the bolts disappeared, the clock chime sounds returned to normal.
"That was very interesting and quite dangerous," said a shocked Atrus. "Would anyone else care to try?"
"I will if no one will," said Professor Oak.
"Proceed," said Atrus. Professor Oak pulled out a Pok?ball.
"This device is called a Pok?ball," said Professor Oak. "They function like a cage, but it's not really a cage, just a way of 'storing' our creatures." He threw the Pok?ball and released a Pidgey.
    "Amazing," said Atrus.
Then, Professor Oak commanded Pidgey to send a Gust towards the giant crystals. The giant crystals swayed slightly, and a chorus of sounds rang from them as the Gust made its way through the crystals. The crystals returned to normal a few seconds later, and the Gust dissipated.
"Well, now from what I see, you have the power to change the Age you are in instead of creating another one," concluded Atrus.
"We've shown you our powers, what about yours, Atrus?" asked Misty.
"I will, but we need to go back to Myst to do it," said Atrus.
Everybody made their way to the door, which was already set from a previous expedition. They opened the door and approached the ship. Then, they boarded the ship to get to the Myst book, which they used to Link back to Myst. All of them were now standing in the library. Atrus took out a blank book that he had held when Ash and the Professor were showing their powers.
"I can create Links to other Ages, as well as back to this Age. If I want to create an Age, I write a Descriptive Book. If I only want the Link to another Age, I just write a Linking Book. However, to write a Linking Book, I must be writing the Linking Book on the place that I want to Link to. The Ages that were contained here on Myst had their Descriptive and Linking Books together. Thus, when they are burned, the Links are lost," said Atrus.
"So what are you, uh, linking to?" asked Ash.
"Do you remember how I said I would have a way for you to find food?"
    "Yes, so what?"
"The Book I am writing is a Linking Book to Myst, and to Link back to here, I can only write the Book here, in the library. I will put this book in a harvest Age, where you can then find food and go back to Myst afterwards."
"How long will it take you to write?"
"It shouldn't be long, and you can watch the process closely, one at a time," replied Atrus. As Atrus wrote the Book, Ash, Misty, Brock, Jessie, James, Meowth and the Professor took turns looking at Atrus writing symbols in a book that would eventually lead them to Myst. When Atrus was finished, he showed the book to everybody. "There are also limitations on Linking Books. For example, they will not let you Link to another place in the same Age. But that shouldn't bother you too much."
"Can we go the harvest Age?" asked Brock.
"Yes, we can. I brought us a Linking Book to the Age. We can Link one by one. I will go last." Atrus opened the Book to the linking panel, and let everybody else go through first. Atrus then linked with the new Linking Book in hand.

    Chapter 12: Finding Food

The group found themselves in the front of a castle, with fruit groves surrounding the perimeter. While Atrus went into the castle to place the Linking Book, the rest of the group went into the surrounding fruit groves.
"These apples are very ripe and juicy," said Brock as he bites a chunk of an red apple he picked.
"So are these peaches," responded Misty. Both then saw Atrus walking towards a bench with a sheet of paper. They walked over and saw that the paper was filled with D'ni writing.
"What are you working on?" asked Misty.
"Well, this is a new Age I am creating. I'm trying to get the mechanisms to work right before I write the Age on a Descriptive Book," said Atrus. He sighed and went back to work. Brock and Misty went back to pick fruit to eat.
"He must still be missing Catherine," said Brock.
"I know. Trapped on a world with no way out. I guess he will call on us when it is time to help. But how can we help?"
On the other side of the fields, Jessie and James were picking the fruits almost greedily.
"These are great fruits! We should take all of them now and-" said James. Jessie then interrupted.
"Oh, James, don't you understand? A traveler might come by later on. What if they find no fruit?"
    "Yeah!" added Meowth.
"Okay, I guess I'll just pick enough for us three and go back."

Everyone took a basket from stacks located near the castle; they then picked just enough fruits for their own use, whether it was for Myst Island, on the harvest Age, or on one of their expeditions. When they came back, all of them had baskets filled with several different fruits.
"Are all of you ready to enter the castle?" asked Atrus.
"Yes!" They then walked to a bridge going into the central island where the castle is located. The castle was an ornate building with a large entrance. Just after the entrance was a dining room and a kitchen with a fireplace off to the side. On another side was a staircase leading up to a chamber of bedrooms.
Everyone put their fruit baskets on the dining room table. They then went upstairs to their respective beds. After a short nap, all were energized and ready to go. But first was dinner; they had not eaten anything since they went to Rime. Brock took to the kitchen and prepared several meals for everyone, including Atrus. When Atrus ate one of Brock's meals, he looked very pleased, and everyone else were able tell that he hadn't been like this for a long time. During dinner, Ash posed a question to Atrus.
"How are we going to get back to Myst?"
"Remember I made that Linking Book a while ago? I still have it here." Atrus then pulled out the book. "Follow me." Atrus took Ash and Brock upstairs to a panel in the bedroom. Engraved on it was a 5 by 5 board. Atrus explained why it was necessary to protect his books: he was concerned for the security of his family. He then showed Ash and Brock how to open the panel. To open the panel, they had to push 10 squares in a certain order. When the panel opened, they were presented with a linking book. The linking book led to D'ni. Atrus then placed the Myst linking book next to it. Once he was done, he closed the panel; the three went back to finish dinner. Night was just arriving in the harvest Age; everyone wrapped up dinner and went to their beds.
"This is so much nicer than sleeping on that library floor," said Jessie.
"And we even have individual beds!" said James. All of them settled into their beds and slept through the night. In the middle of the night, Atrus secretly opened the panel and linked back to D'ni. In the morning, everyone awoke to find Atrus gone.
"Guys, where is Atrus?" asked Ash.
"He probably went back to D'ni. After all, he has some work to do," said Brock. Everyone decided that they should link back to Myst, and maybe clean it up for Atrus after what he had gone through. Ash then opened the panel and grabbed the Myst book. But just as Ash was about to open the book to the linking panel, a note fell out of the book. Atrus had requested their help to do some surveys of his ages to help him with his work.
"What do you think?" said Misty.
"Sure, we'll do some work, if it helps him," said Jessie and James together.
"So it is agreed then. We'll do some work for Atrus." All of them linked back to Myst Island; Brock was last to link, and as he placed the book back in the panel and linked, the panel closed up.

Chapter 13: A Myst Worth Living For

"...and there we go." Ash had placed the Channelwood book on the library's bookshelf. Recently, the group had done an extensive cleanup of Myst Island. They removed all the burnt books and dumped them into the furnace boiler in the log cabin. The books for Stoneship, Mechanical, Selenitic, Channelwood, and Rime were placed in the bookshelves. Their respective journals were put below them in the same order. The note to Catherine and the note to Sirrus were placed next to the books. The fireplace codebook was placed in the bottom shelf.
Days ago, they were doing a number of surveys on the worlds of Myst. One of those surveys was to measure the water depth in Channelwood. The world is stable, but since the world has gone a very dramatic change, it was imperative that the water depth of the island be measured. Another survey included measuring how much the lighthouse in Stoneship had sunk.
"Why are we doing this again?" asked James on that survey.
"According to Atrus, we are doing this to help him, but he still wouldn't tell us what we are helping him with," said Brock. That survey was days ago. Today, they were preparing for yet another survey; they were to survey meteors in Selenitic, and this time, Atrus was coming with them. The group was prepared to go and was waiting in the library when Atrus linked in.
"Are you ready?" asked Atrus. He had brought a telescope with him that he crafted while he was trapped in D'ni. The group replied with a resounding yes and linked to Selenitic. Once there, they exited the rocket ship and walked towards the open dirt area near the clock. Atrus set up the telescope, and the group began a discussion.
"Atrus, what's up with this world?" asked Ash.
"First of all, I think you should call my worlds Ages, and call the books that lead to an Age Linking Books. And we came here by a process called Linking."
"Okay then, what's up with this Age?"
"This Age is called Selenitic. I made it many years ago when I was experimenting with all kinds of passages from a different Descriptive Book. One of the books I used was Riven, also known as the Fifth Age by my father Gehn."
"Why did you use Riven?" asked Brock.
"You see, my father has created Ages for quite a long time. Each time he created an Age, however, it was often unstable. I remember a long time ago that my father modified an Age so much that it became unstable, and it died. It seems there's a flaw in his writing that somehow allowed this instability to occur."
    "But why Riven?"
"I had no choice; when he imprisoned me in D'ni, he left me with the Riven Descriptive Book. That was all I was able to use."
"Then how did you create Myst and its Ages while you were imprisoned?"
"During the time I was imprisoned, I linked into Riven and eventually found my future wife Catherine. She was about to be married to Gehn, and I was given the task of fixing Riven's instabilities. She stole a number of blank books, some of which became the Ages of Myst, but most became experimental Ages for Riven's instabilities. Myst came out of nowhere; I have reason that my grandmother Anna might have written it. In a confrontation, I abandoned Gehn on Riven and ran away with Catherine to Myst." The rest of the group looked intrigued about Atrus' story.
"Is there anything wrong with Selenitic?" asked the Professor.
"Yes, and that's what we came to survey today. When I first came to the Age, it was plagued with meteor showers. The meteors, I discovered, came from a dead planet that brushed up against the planet in which this island is located. That meteor shower created the lagoon and the island in the center."
"Are the meteors still a problem?"
"Yes, they are. They occur about every year or so, and I've noticed that smaller shards are showering the island; it might be a sign that something large is coming. The meteors won't destroy the planet, but this island will surely be affected. That's why I came to you to do this survey." Atrus then let each person view the telescope. For the survey, the group had to remain there for a few days to measure meteor concentrations around the island and the size of the chunks. Each night, some meteor chunks rained on the island, and the morning after, the chunks were counted and measured. During the time the survey went on, Ash asked Atrus a few questions.
"Can the meteors destroy this island?"
"They can, if the chunks are large enough."
"How will you get back to Myst, then?"
"I always make sure to bring a Linking Book with me."
"But what would happen to the Book?"
"It will remain here. Linking Books are replaceable; your life isn't."
"Good point." Ash continued working. After a few days, the survey appeared to be complete; Atrus looked through the telescope, and he saw that the meteors were beginning to recede. The collected data was then gathered by Atrus.
"You've done well. I trust you'll be able to undertake a bigger journey in the future," said Atrus.
"What journey?" asked Meowth and the Professor.
"You'll see soon enough. For now, please Link back to Myst. Prepare yourself for several days' worth of journey." Atrus packed up his telescope, and they walked to the door. The group traveled to the Myst book using the pod and linked back to the library.

    Chapter 14: Trapped

Before linking back to D'ni, Atrus gave Brock a blank journal.
"I assume we have to use this journal for our explorations," said Ash.
"You're right. I think I'll keep ahold of it for now," replied Brock. The group decided that they should pack for their journey, and they headed to the Harvest Age to do it. They gathered fruits enough for four days of journey, and gathered them in either their backpacks or boxes provided by the Harvest Age. The group then linked back to Myst, walked to the log cabin, put down their packs, and headed back to the library. Atrus was standing in the middle of the library when they came in.
    "Greetings."
"Hello, Atrus," the group replied. Ash then spoke out.
"So what is this journey that we are going on?"
"Ah," replied Atrus. "You will be visiting a very old age."
    "Riven?"
"Yes, that's where you will be going." Brock and Team Rocket gasped silently.
"What are we going to do there?"
"You'll see tomorrow. I do not want to give specifics on what you will be doing just yet."
    "So why are you here?"
"Oh, I need to go to Stoneship to grab a few supplies. I will see you tomorrow in D'ni." Atrus then walked out of the library and towards the ship. He was gone in a few moments.
    "Riven?" asked Misty.
"Yes," said Brock. "Remember how Atrus said Gehn was trapped in Riven? Considering he's evil, from what we heard, we probably have to watch our steps in Riven."
"Could this be dangerous?" asked James.
    "Possibly."
"So what can we do?" asked Jessie.
"We can't predict what will happen, but we can prepare. It's getting dark out here, though - we do not have much time. So I guess we just have to go with the stuff that we have." The group agreed and linked back to the Harvest Age and slept there.

The next morning, the group packed all of their supplies. They opened the bedroom panel and used the D'ni book to get to D'ni. Once in D'ni, they came up to Atrus.
    "Ah, you're finally here."
"So, what are we going to do in Riven?" asked Brock.
"Well, there's a lot of history you must know. Remember how I told you that Sirrus and Achenar trapped my wife in order to get the red and blue books?"
"You mean that Catherine's trapped in Riven?"
    "That's right."
    "Uh-oh," replied the others.
"You will need to go to Riven to free Catherine," said Atrus. "But there is also one additional task you must do."
    "What is it?" asked James.
"I'm afraid you'll need to trap Gehn."
    "Uh-oh," again replied the others.
    "How?" asked Ash.
"Almost the same way Sirrus and Achenar were trapped," replied Atrus. He then pulled out a green book.
"Looks like a D'ni linking book."
"Ah, but it isn't. This book is a specially designed prison."
"Then how will we get out?"
"You can't. You'll find out why when you get there. I also have this." Atrus then pulled out a small book.
    "Another journal?" asked Misty.
"Correct," replied Atrus. "Most of what you need to know is in there. Keep it well-hidden."
"What do we need to do after trapping Gehn and freeing Catherine?" asked the Professor.
"Signal me. Somewhere in the Age should be a machine that will let you do that." Atrus paused for a moment. "Take the journal and the trap book. You will Link into Riven right now."
    "Right now?" asked Jessie.
    "Right now."
"Okay, then," said Jessie. Ash took the journal and hid it in his pack. Brock held the book. Atrus then took the large book on his desk and flipped it to a moving image. The group then touched the image, one by one.

They arrived in a cage, piled upon each other. A set of bars clamped shut from the bottom in front of them.
"What is this cage doing here?!" exclaimed Jessie. From the cage they were able to see a strange conical device and a lever on the right. A man then appeared on the right. The man started to speak in a different language.
"What in the world is he doing?" asked Meowth. The man then stuttered as he spoke. After awhile, his speech cleared up. He walked to the cage with his hands raised while still speaking. He then looked at the book that Brock was holding, and the man's hands instantly reached into the cage. The group gasped and tried to get their hands on the book, but it was too late. The man outside the cage now had the book and started flipping through it.
"Oh, great," said Ash. "Now what?" Suddenly a whooshing noise was heard from the right, and a dart flew into the back of the man, and he dropped the book. He turned right, walked a short distance, and collapsed. Another man then came from the right, this time dressed in protective clothing. He picked up the book walked up to the lever, and pulled it. The bars of the cage began to lower. As they lowered, the armed man wedged a device into the lever with a blade. He then ran off with the book to the right. As soon as the bars completely lowered, the group got out of the cage.
"Brock, what do we do?" asked Misty. "Atrus trusted us with that prison book."
"Well, we'll just have to get it back then," replied Brock. They then looked off in the distance towards a set of rails and another island.
"Looks like it's going to be a difficult journey," said Ash and James.

Chapter 15: On the Temple Island

The group looked around. They were standing in a clearing with a cage, a giant blade stabbed into the ground next to it, the conical device they saw earlier, and a lever. They walked up to the conical device.
"I wonder what this device is for," said Ash. Professor Oak walked up to the cone. He saw a scope, and he looked through it. The scope showed a blurry image.
"I wonder if we're ever going to use this thing," said the Professor. Ash saw the lever on the railing, and he pulled it up. Nothing happened. He then tried the button, and he got the same results.
"Maybe it needs power," said James.
"Good idea," said Ash. "Let's look around." The group walked out of the clearing to a set of steps, which led to a wooden staircase, in turn leading to an intersection. The group walked up the staircase to the intersection. Across the staircase was a set of stone stairs leading to a landing. To their right was a bridge leading to another section of the island, and to their left was an entryway to a golden room. The group turned into the entryway and entered the room.
"Impressive," said Jessie. The room was supported by five tree trunks, which in turn supported a ceiling decorated to look like the night sky. On each tree trunk was a large sculpture of a golden beetle. Of the room's five walls, two had an entrance, and three were marked with symbolic writing, which the group quickly recognized as D'ni writing. They approached the beetle across from the entrance where they first came in.
"What do you think this beetle is for?" asked Meowth.
"I don't know," said Ash. "I see a ring on the bottom. I wonder what it does." Ash pulled the ring. The body of the beetle then opened to reveal a view scope. Ash looked into the scope.
"What did you see, Ash?" asked Brock.
"I saw a great man standing over a smaller man who looked like he was falling."
"I have a hunch about that great man, but I'm not sure. If that beetle concealed an image, I'm very sure that the others here would also conceal some image."
"You may be right, Brock," said Ash. The beetle they were viewing was dead across the entrance. The group moved clockwise all around the beetles, pulled the rings, and looked at the scopes. The second beetle revealed the face of the same great man watching over five other people, who were standing over scenes of activities. The third beetle revealed the image of a hand holding a book, with scenes of wood being processed on the outer edge and five people bowing to the book. The fourth beetle revealed the image of the great man writing, with elements of nature spewing forth from where the pen met the paper. The fifth beetle revealed the image of the great man being worshipped. After looking at the fifth image, Brock reached a conclusion.
"So what was your hunch?" asked James.
"I think the 'great man' is Gehn, and that other man we saw in the first image was Atrus."
"Why is that, Brock?" asked Ash.
"Well, I remember Atrus telling us about that confrontation he had with Gehn. From what we know through Atrus, Gehn doesn't trust him anymore. From Gehn's view, when Atrus fell, he was probably perceived as dead, and thus Gehn probably thinks he defeated his son, Atrus."
"Sounds like you're right, Brock," said the Professor. "But what about that other entrance that leads to the dome?"
"Maybe there's a switch that opens the grate?" said Jessie.
"Good idea, Jess," said James. "I saw a button on the entryway. It might open that grate."
"Let's try that," said Ash. The group walked out of the room and pushed the button. The button popped out, and the room started to shift to the left. The room continued to shift to the left and stopped to show a peephole. Brock looked through the peephole.
"It's the golden room!" said Brock.
"If the room rotates, could there be another entrance?" asked Misty.
"Probably so, Misty. I think that landing over there might give us some answers." The group walked down the stone stairs and onto the landing. On one side of the landing was a door with a padlock.
"It's locked. How are we going to- er, Pikachu?" Pikachu had climbed off Ash's shoulder and was crawling under the bottom of the door. "So we go down here?" Pikachu replied by wagging its tail. "Okay." Ash crawled under the door. The rest of the group then followed Ash under the door. Once the group was inside, Pikachu returned to Ash's left shoulder. The group then climbed up the ladder and approached the peephole.
"Same room?" asked Jessie. James looked into the peephole.
"Same room," said James. "But there's no button to rotate here."
"Maybe the idea of this room is to rotate the room so that we could access all the entrances," said Brock. "Let's go back to the intersection and rotate the room there." The group crawled out of the cave and back to the intersection. Ash pushed the button, and the room rotated once to show another peephole. Ash pushed the button again, and this time the room rotated to show an entrance. At the other end, a grate was blocking the entrance.
"I've got it," said Brock. "Since the other entrance leads to that other end, rotating this once more should align the entrances with the locked door cave and another entrance."
    "Let's try it," said Misty.
"All right. Ash, James, Jessie, Meowth, and Misty, enter the room. We'll stay here and rotate the room."
"Okay," replied Ash. The five entered the room and stood in the center. Brock pushed the button, and the room rotated once to show a peephole.

    Meanwhile, in the room...
"Hey, look!" said Ash. "There's the padlocked door," he said as he pointed to an entrance.
"And here's another open entrance," said Misty. The five walked into the other open entrance and into a cave with a T pipe on the other end. A label on the pipe was marked with the image of the cone mechanism.
"I think this might be the power source for the cone device," said James.
    "Good thinking," said Jessie.
"Let's turn it on," said Meowth. Ash turned the lever on the T juncture. Power began to hiss along the horizontal pipe. Since there was nothing more to be found, the five walked back to the entrance, where they noticed two items.
    "Here's another button," said James.
"Here's a lever," said Ash. "I wonder if that button rotates the room."
"And I wonder if that switch opens a door," said James. Ash pulled the switch, and a clanging sound was heard somewhere across the room.
"Nice work," said Ash to James. James pushed the button, and the room started to rotate to the left.
"You too," said James to Ash.

    Meanwhile, at the intersection...
"What's taking them so long?" asked the Professor. The room then started to rotate to the left, and revealed the original entrance.
"I think we need to go in now before it rotates again," said Brock. The two ran into the room, and just as they entered, the room began to rotate again. The grated door to the large dome began to disappear from view.
"Hey, didn't we hear a clanking sound just a little while ago?" said the Professor as the room rotated.
"Sounded like a door opened," said Brock. "But if it isn't that one, then it must have opened..."
"...the other one!" said both of them. As soon as the rotation stopped, both of them were faced with two entrances, one leading to a cavern with another grated door and one to the steam pipe. The others were waiting at the steam pipe cavern, and they walked into the room.
"Hey, Brock," said Ash. "That other entrance grate opened."
"I see that. Let's check it out." The group walked to the entrance and into the cavern. However, their path was cut short by another grated door.
"Could this switch open the door?" asked Jessie. She then pulled the switch. A clanging sound was heard, but the grated cavern door did not open.
"I imagine that switch would open the other grate that's blocking the path to the giant dome," said the Professor. "Let's rotate the room so that the entrances line up with this cavern and the intersection." Ash pushed the button, and the room rotated once to show another peephole. He pushed the button again, and the room rotated once more to show an entrance. They entered the room and walked out onto the intersection. Ash pushed the button twice, and the room rotated twice to line up the dome walkway and the intersection. The group entered the room and walked out onto the walkway.
"Look, there's the cone machine, below us," said Misty. The group took a brief look, continued down the walkway, and entered the dome. They came upon a diagram on a railing.
"I wonder what this shows," said Meowth.
"It looks like these boxes show the direction of where those big pipes are heading," said the Professor while pointing to a device ahead of them and the pipes leading out from the device.
"There's a lever here," said Ash. He pulled the lever and nothing happened. "Think it needs power?"
"Probably so, like with everything in these worlds," said Jessie.
"Then let's move on." The group continued along the walkway, which curved around the inner edge of the dome with a staircase halfway through the curve and an outlet on the other end. They walked out of the dome and to a dirt walkway. Just up the walkway was a short pier with another T pipe, with one end leading to a device. The group walked to the T pipe.
"This is probably another power control," said Ash. He turned the switch, and the T pipe diverted power to the device above. They then walked back along the dirt path.
"Look, there's a dome up there," said Misty. "And there seems to be a walkway to it, but I can't see where it leads."
"Well, I think we'll worry about that later. There's a metal platform over there where Ash is standing on," said the Professor. The group looked down, and then up.
"Professor, this looks like an elevator. There are rails on this side and this metal platform looks like it might fill that missing walkway section up there," said Ash. Brock then looked over.
"Looks like you're right," replied the Professor.
"There doesn't seem to be any way to raise the platform, though."
"You know what? The mechanism to actually raise this could have been placed up there, for security reasons. Since we can't get up there, how about we go into the cave?"
"Sure." The group walked into the cave and came out onto a small ledge. On the ledge was another T pipe. Ash turned the switch, and suddenly, a loud rumbling was heard coming from above. They looked up and saw the dome walkway rising to form a staircase.
"There may be something up there," said James.
"Whatever it is up there, I don't think we are ready for it," said Brock. "Let's go back and explore that other bridge on the intersection to the golden room." The group made their way back along the cave and the dirt path, and back to the other end of the large dome. However, they immediately noticed that the walkway to the golden room had been raised, preventing access to the golden room.
"I'm guessing that this lever controls that walkway," said Ash.
"Correct," said Brock. "Pull it." Ash pulled the lever, and the walkway lowered to make a bridge back to the golden room. The group crossed the bridge, made their way back to the golden room, and walked out to the intersection. They then crossed the bridge across the intersection and walked into a tunnel. Halfway along the stepped tunnel, they encountered a metal door. They opened the door and entered the chamber.
"This chamber looks eerie," said Jessie. A cage in front of them opened, allowing them to sit in the chair. Ash sat in the chair.
"From here I can see a red viewer on the left and a blue one on the right," said Ash. Brock, Misty, and Professor Oak looked into the red viewer; Jessie, James, and Meowth looked into the blue viewer.
"The red viewer is viewing some room," said Misty.
"The blue viewer is viewing a landing," said Jessie.
"And there's a lever next to the red viewer," said Brock. Brock pulled the lever, and a door on the red viewer opened to let light into the room. Meanwhile, Ash pressed a button on his right. The cage closed up around the chair. The group then noticed the cage closing around Ash and gasped.
"Oh, no," said the Professor. "Jessie, James, Meowth, close the metal door and watch it. Brock, watch the red viewer. Misty, watch the blue viewer. If this cage is an alarm of some sort we'd better be ready if anyone comes. Pull the lever, Ash." Ash pulled the lever on his left. A heavy, humming noise began to emanate from around the cage. The noise continued to increase and leveled.
    "Professor!" yelled Ash nervously.
"All right, pull back the lever and try that other button," replied the Professor nervously. Ash pulled back the lever, and the noise faded away. He pushed the right button and the cage opened.
"Brock, Misty, did you see anyone on the viewer?"
"No, we did not," replied the two.
"Jessie, open the door. James, look to the left. Meowth, look to the right. Do you see anyone or anything coming towards here?" Jessie opened the metal door, and James and Meowth looked out the door.
"There's nothing there," replied James and Meowth.
"All right then. Let's leave this chamber - it's getting much too eerie."
"Agreed," said Ash. "That chair scares me." The group then exited the chamber and back into the tunnel. As the Professor left the chamber, the cage closed up.
"Hmmm," he thought to himself as he exited.
"I guess we go down the tunnel now," said Jessie.
"Probably so," said Brock. The group continued down the tunnel and arrived at a stone door. Professor Oak opened the door and the group entered the chamber.
"Hey, this looks like that room we saw back in the red viewer," said Misty.
"You're right, Misty," said the Professor. "If the viewers are processing those images live, then somebody would be seeing us right now."
"This looks like a temple," said Ash.
"That's because it is," said Brock as he pointed to two large sculptures of an animal and the fruit offerings that the sculptures are holding. "By the way, if this is the same room we saw in the viewer, then the light door should be..."
"...behind us!" said Jessie and Meowth. The group then walked out the door onto a landing. "But wait, this looks familiar."
"This is the landing on the blue viewer," said James. "And that double rail looks like it could hold a vehicle."
"But there's no vehicle," said Jessie.
"Ah, maybe it needs to be summoned," replied James. "Let's try the blue button." A vehicle then traveled off the island ahead of them, across the rails, and onto the landing. As the vehicle made its final approach, the vehicle slowed down gently to a stop. The door of the vehicle then opened to create a staircase. The group boarded the vehicle, and Ash sat at the controls. The controls were composed of a handle and a lever. Ash tried the lever first, but it did not move.
"Ash, try the handle," said the Professor. Ash grasped the handle and found he was able to rotate it to the right. As he did that, the vehicle door closed and the craft rotated.
"I'm guessing that this lever will take us straight to that island, then," said Ash. He pulled the lever forward. The vehicle rose slightly and slowly made its approach to the tracks on the sea. As soon as the vehicle pulled out of the landing, the vehicle began to speed up considerably. The group lurched back as the vehicle took off and made its way to the island across the landing. As the vehicle approached the island, it began to slow down to a complete stop at another landing. The controls rotated 180 degrees back into place, and the vehicle doors opened to form a staircase. The group walked out into the open landing.

Chapter 16: Through the Jungle Island

"That was a fast ride," said the Professor.
"I don't think that's going to be the last of that," said Brock. "I saw some other rails like these around the Age, so I'm thinking we have to use this mode of transportation to get around the Age."
"It's kind of fun, though," said Ash.
"That's true, too," said Brock. "But we really should get that book back."
"Well, let's go then," said Misty. The group walked across the landing to a cavern. Just as they were about to enter the cavern, Ash spied something wedged in the rocks. The group approached the rocks.
"It looks like an eye," said Meowth. Meowth then rolled the eyeball. As the eyeball flipped, it revealed a symbol that resembled the letters KI between two lines. As the eyeball flipped back into place and rocked along its place, the eyeball made a chirping sound.
"This symbol could be important," said the Professor. "I think we should record it, as well as what sound it made."
"Why don't we use our blank journal?" said Brock.
"Sure," said Misty. Misty recorded the symbol and the sound it made on the first page of the journal. Since there was nothing else to be found at the landing, the group made their way into the cavern and into a tunnel. Near the end of the tunnel, they saw a blue button.
"What's the blue button doing here?" asked Misty.
"It's probably so we can summon the vehicle quicker, I guess," said James.
"Interesting," said Brock. The group continued walking to a T-intersection.
"But now where do we go?" asked Jessie.
"Down there?" said Ash. The group walked down the stairs towards a lagoon. They then noticed two creatures resting on the rocks. "Look at those creatures."
"Yeah, they're cute, aren't the-" Misty missed a step and fell onto the stairs. She started to slide and tumble into Ash, Brock, Jessie, James, and Meowth. They tumbled along the stairway and stopped tumbling on a rock near the lagoon. The creatures on the rock hopped off and swam away. "Oh, great. Now they're gone."
"Ah, don't worry about it, Misty," said Brock. "Maybe we'll meet them again. Right now, let's just relax on the sand- our behinds are hurting."
"Yeah," replied Jessie and James. The six walked onto the sand in the lagoon. Professor Oak then came onto the sand.
"Are you guys okay?" asked the Professor.
"Yeah, we are," said Ash. He then spied something off to the side. "Hey, is that another eyeball?" The group looked at the rock Ash was looking at.
"It sure is," said Brock. The group walked over to the eyeball. James rolled the eyeball, and it flipped to reveal a symbol resembling an elongated letter H between two lines. As the eyeball flipped back into place, a low-pitched howling sound was made. Misty recorded the symbol and the sound it made.
"That sounded a little creepy," said Jessie. "What could make a noise like that?"
"It could be made by a very large creature," said the Professor. "But that's my theory."
"Well, I don't think there's anything more to look at in this area," said Brock. "Why don't we move on along the path?"
"Sure," replied Meowth. The group got back onto the pathway and followed it to a cave, which the group entered. The cave led to a walkway. The group was about to walk onto the walkway when they heard a humming sound.
"What's that?" asked Jessie. The humming sound continued. They then looked to their right and saw a pod with a person inside, rotating a device.
"Uh-oh, I think we'd better get out of here!" Brock yelled. The group ran back through the cave, past the lagoon, and up to the T-intersection.
    "What was that?" asked Ash.
"It was probably a guard pod," said the Professor. "We might have to watch our steps on this island; you never know who or what is or could be watching us."
"All right." The group then continued up the stairs to a rope bridge, which they crossed one by one. Once the group was safely across, they looked around. They were standing in a clearing with tree stumps all around, and three paths led from the rope bridge. The group took the first path, but immediately stopped at the entrance.
"Oh, no," said Misty, pointing to a faraway pod. "There's another pod here."
"You're right," said Brock. "Let's try the second path." The group walked over to the second path and came upon a wooden door. Just as they were about to open the door, they noticed a small insect on the side.
"This looks interesting," said James, pointing to a golden beetle. The group looked at the beetle up close.
"Nice find," said Ash. The beetle fluttered and buzzed. Ash tried to put his finger up close to the beetle, but as soon as he did that, the beetle flew away.
"Maybe it doesn't like being touched," said the Professor.
"There's probably more in the forest. Let's go in there." The group opened the wooden door and stepped into the forest. They continued walking until they saw a structure supporting a spinning dome at the top.
"And there's another dome," said Jessie.
"Could these domes be on every island?" asked Misty.
"It seems so," said Brock. "They seem to always be deliberately placed at an obscure location."
"Gehn probably wanted it to be this way," said Ash.
"Probably so," said the Professor. "By the way, do you notice that big blade behind us?" The group looked behind them and saw a large blade wedged into the rocks.
"That looks just like the blade we saw earlier back at that other island," said James. "What's the purpose behind these big blades?"
"I wonder if they are used to keep the islands stable," said the Professor.
"Why would that be?" asked Misty.
"Since Riven is a very unstable world, if a large earthquake happens, it might be enough to bring down the islands. I think the blades help the island hold on longer, much like a toothpick does to sandwiches."
"Good point," said James. "Say, isn't that another eyeball?" James was pointing towards a lighted spot near the base where the blade met the ground. The group walked over to the base of the blade. Near the point where the giant blade was wedged into the rocks, there was an eyeball, and off to the side was a smaller version of the blade, also wedged into the rocks, but this time the rounded part of the blade contained a fire marble.
"Who would put all of these eyeballs here?" asked Ash.
"We know for sure it wasn't Gehn," said the Professor.
    "Because it's different?"
"That's right. His style is more regal and royal; this thing looks like some of the natives created it." Professor Oak paused for a minute. "Roll the ball and see what symbol and sound we get." Ash rolled the ball. The ball revealed a symbol showing a small box in the lower-right corner of a bigger box between two lines. When the eyeball flipped back into place, a braying sound was made. Misty then recorded the symbol and the sound.
"I don't think I've ever heard that sound before," said Ash.
"You're right," said Jessie. "It sounds like it could be made by some animal with a large mouth."
"Hmmm. Hey, why don't we set up camp here?"
"Good idea, Ash. It's totally hidden, and I don't think that anybody will find this camp here unless they're really looking for it. Let's put our stuff down here and continue along the path." The group put down their packs and continued along the main path. They entered the structure supporting the spinning dome, and found themselves at a fork.
"Let's take the left path," said Misty. They followed the red-lit path up to a door. Brock opened the door and walked onto the path when he realized something. He backed away from the door, waved the others away, and closed the door. "What is it, Brock?"
"This path leads to that path with the guard pod," Brock whispered. "Let's back away into the fork." The group backed into the fork and this time took the right path. They followed the path up to a decorated head.
"That's a pretty big statue," said James. "Do the people here worship this thing?"
"Well, I'd say they'd most likely fear it because of the teeth that it has," said Jessie.
"That could be true, too," replied James. "So this path leads to the statue. The other path leads to the guarded path. What do we do?"
"Hey, there's still that other path outside of the jungle," said Brock. "Let's check it out." The three went back into the deep jungle path and followed it to the wooden door. They exited into the clearing and took the other path. Along the way, they saw an axe wedged into a stump.
"That ax looks like it was used to cut the wood around here," said Ash.
"And there's an even bigger one next to the bridge," said Jessie. The group looked at both axes.
"So which one was used to cut the wood?"
"I'd say the larger one was used to chop down the trees and the smaller one was used for cutting the wood into smaller pieces," said the Professor. He looked at Brock and the square pit he was standing near. "Hey, Brock, what's in the pit?"
"There's a cart here," replied Brock. "Now that I think about it, this cart could be used to transport the wood pieces. But where would it go?" Brock stepped into the pit and sat in the cart. Ash then followed Brock and sat in the cart.
"The track curves around there, but I can't see anything more," said Ash. "What would happen if I pulled this lever, though?"
"I'd say it releases the cart," replied Brock. "Hey, Ash, pull the lever. Let's see where the cart goes." Ash pulled the lever. The cart began moving slowly towards the curve. As it turned, the pathway revealed a slope.
"Uh-oh. I think the cart is going to speed up. Hang on tight, Ash!" The cart approached the slope and began speeding up. As the cart sped up, they started to scream. The cart went into a series of rings that glowed orange. At first, the walls were stone, but as the cart went along the tracks, the walls changed to crystal blue, and tiny mists of water sprayed the cart. After awhile, the tracks then led out into the open sea. The cart slowed down slightly, and the cart approached a new island. The tracks led the cart into a dark cave, which led to a small landing. The cart bumped into a small spring, and when the cart stopped, the cart's base dropped the two onto a metal walkway. The two stood up.
    "Where are we?" asked Ash.
    "On a new island."

    Chapter 17: Hitting Crater Island

The two stood up and looked around. They were standing on a metal walkway in the bowl of a crater with a lake in the middle and several structures around the lake. Behind them was a handle.
"Ash, you know something about that ride?"
    "Yeah, Brock?"
"Did you notice that each time we went through an orange ring, we felt a wave of heat?"
    "Yeah, I did."
"And did you notice when we went through the crystal blue walls, we sometimes were sprayed with water?"
    "Yeah..."
"We were underwater during that part of the ride."
"But we never had water close to our body, except when we were sprayed."
"That's right. And those orange heat rings were present in the water, as well. I'm starting to think that the heat somehow makes the water move off to the side."
"Brock, you might be right." Ash then paused for a minute. "Shouldn't we get the others here?"
"I think we should. By the cart?"
"Sure, why not? I think the mine cart is behind us, and it's in that cavern where the hatch is."
"Good observation, Ash." Ash climbed down a ladder on the metal walkway and approached the ladder on the crater bowl. He climbed up the ladder to a hatch, and opened the hatch. He then walked over to the cart, hopped in, and pulled the lever. The cart made its way back to the island he came from. Once he was back, Ash took Misty for the ride across. The process continued with the rest of the group until they were all at the other island. The group made its way off the metal walkway and onto a ground clearing.
"These devices look pretty strange, but somehow they look familiar," said Misty. "I wonder if that little valve in the middle of the lake powers these devices."
"You might be right, Misty," said the Professor.
    "Hey, Misty."
    "Yes, Brock?"
"While Ash was gone, I found a handle over on the metal walkway. I tried to pull it, but nothing happened. I'm thinking your theory about the power might be right; go to the valve and see if you can point the valve over here."
"Sure, Brock." Misty then walked to the valve by a metal pier. At the valve, she found the valve was able to point in three directions. She looked at the metal walkway, followed a pipe leading from the walkway to the valve, and pointed the valve to the pipe leading to the walkway. She then walked back to the clearing. "Try the handle now, Brock." Brock went back up to the metal walkway and pulled the handle. A machine below the walkway started to whir and clank. The container on top of the machine dropped a few twigs into the machine. The machine chipped the twigs, and after a few seconds, the chipped twigs came out by a duct onto a pile of wood shavings just off the metal walkway.
"This machine is a wood chipper," said Brock. "But what would you do with all this wood?"
"Boil it?" said Ash and James.
"There's a structure with flames over there; I think we might have to boil it," added Ash. The group then looked at the circular structure near the clearing.
The circular structure had blue flames shooting from its base and had a walkway off to the side. The group walked onto the walkway. They then noticed a door ahead of them, and Ash and Brock walked up to the door.
"I don't think we should open that door."
    "Why?" asked Ash.
"Well, it's kind of obvious. Since the flames are on, I'm willing to think whatever's inside is really, really hot."
"Oh, yeah." The group walked over to the other end of the walkway, where they saw an assortment of controls.
"Ash, you're right," said Brock. "There's water boiling here," he said as he pointed to a small window with water boiling.
"I wonder what all these controls are for," said Misty. She saw a lever to the right. She pulled the lever, and the flame under the structure turned off. Above her, a lantern lit up with blue flames.
"I think you've turned off the boiler," said James.
"Indeed, it is turned off," said Brock. "Ash, let's see if we can go in the door now." The two walked to the door. As soon as they stepped up to the door, a heavy lock loosened its grip on the door, and the door slid open.
"That was easy," said Ash. The two entered the boiler and stood on a platform. However, they soon faced another problem. "That looks like a shaft over in the middle."
"You're right, Ash. You know what? I think we need to empty the water before we can go in it. And I think it can be done with the controls." The two exited the boiler, and the door closed behind them. They walked back to the controls and immediately noticed someone was missing.
    "Hey, where's Professor?" asked Ash.
"He's over there," said Meowth, pointing to the Professor, who was standing near a ladder.

"Hmmm." Professor Oak looked up and saw a round hatch. He climbed the ladder and tried to open the hatch. No matter how hard he pushed, the hatch refused to open. After failing to open the hatch, he climbed down the ladder and walked back to the boiler walkway and the controls.
"Professor, what did you find?" asked Ash.
"I found a round hatch, but I think it can only be opened from the other side. Did you find anything in the boiler?"
"We found a shaft, but we can't get to it. We're thinking of emptying the water before we can get to it."
"If the wood chipper needed power, I have no doubt that to operate some things here, we need power here as well," said Brock. "Misty, can you point the lake valve to the boiler?"
"Sure, Brock." Misty walked out of the walkway to the lake valve and pointed the valve to the boiler. She then walked back to the boiler controls. "All right, I did it."
"Could this lever empty the boiler?" said Ash as he pointed to a lever on the wall of the boiler. He pulled the lever down, but nothing happened. He pulled the lever back up.
"Hey, there's a joint here," said James as he pointed to a Y joint with a handle pointing towards a farther pipe. "The power might have to be rerouted to that lever before it will work." James pulled the handle to point it towards the nearer pipe.
"Try the lever now, Ash," said Brock. Ash pulled the lever. A grinding sound was then heard as a bar was being raised inside the boiler. The group then looked into the window.
"Could the bar be a walkway?" said Ash. He and Brock then went back to the boiler door. The door opened and they entered the boiler. "Hey, it is a walkway."
"And we can get to the shaft now," said Brock. They walked over to the shaft.
"There's water over the shaft, though," said Ash.
"Correct. So we still need to empty the boiler. Let's do that now." The two walked out of the boiler and back to the controls.
"I'm guessing this wheel is going to empty the boiler," said Ash.
"Yep," said Brock. "Let's try it." James pointed the Y junction handle to the wheel, and Ash turned the wheel. A duct next to the wheel disconnected and bent to form a curve, and the water level in the boiler began to drop until the boiler was fully empty.
    "We did it!" said Ash.
"All right, then. Let's check out that boiler shaft." The group approached the boiler door and entered the boiler. They walked across the walkway to the shaft, climbed down, and found themselves in a pipe. They then started to crawl. After a short distance, the pipe turned right and sloped upwards. The group continued crawling upwards and then down after a short dip. Eventually, they found themselves at the end of the pipe with a view of the open sea and a high cliff. One by one, the group jumped off the pipe and landed safely on the ground.
"That was a pretty high drop," said Jessie.
"Look, there's a path here," said Misty. "I think we should follow it." The group followed the path, which sloped up the crater wall and back down to a balcony.
"Hey, this looks familiar," said the Professor.
"There's a hatch in the balcony," said Ash.
"And there's a handle, too. So this hatch..." Professor Oak opened the hatch. "...should lead us to the ladder!"
"So now we can go back to the machines if we need to," said James.
"That's correct. And there is a door here; let's find out where it leads." Jessie opened the door, and a walkway was revealed. The group walked along until they came upon a device.
    "What's this for?" asked Jessie.
"There's a handle on the dome cover," said Ash. Ash pulled open the handles to reveal a small metal plate placed above a metal grate. He placed his palm, and the dome cover snapped shut on his hand; however, he was able to pull out his hand just before the cover completely closed. "Whoa."
"That looks like a trap," said James.
"But if it's a trap, what does it trap?" asked Jessie.
"Maybe we can lower the trap?" said Brock. "There's a pulley system here. I think we can lower the trap, and I'm guessing this lever will do that for us." Brock pulled the lever, and nothing happened.
"Needs power," said James and Ash.
    "It definitely does," said Brock.
"I'll switch the power," said Misty. Misty walked out to the balcony, climbed down the ladder, and walked out to the lake valve. She looked at the balcony, pointed the valve toward the balcony, and walked back to the balcony. She climbed up the ladder and walked back to the trap.
"Let's try it now." Brock pulled the lever, and the trap descended into the abyss below. After a few seconds, he pulled the lever, and the trap came back up.
"I don't think it captured anything," said Jessie.
"You're right," said the Professor. "I see some feed here; I think the trap needs to be open and baited to capture anything. Let's open the trap, put some food in, and lower it." Brock opened the trap and Ash placed a pellet of feed. Brock then lowered the trap.
"Now we wait, I guess," said Ash.
"Yep," replied Brock. A few seconds later, a clanging sound was heard. Brock then pulled the lever, and the trap came back closed.
"We got something! Let's see what it is." Ash opened the trap. The trap revealed a bright red-skinned frog. The frog chirped a few times before hopping to the walkway and into the abyss.
"That chirping sounds familiar," said Misty. "But I can't remember what."
"And there seems to be nothing else here," said James. "Except for that fan."
"So how do we get off this island?" asked Jessie.
"Maybe there's a walkway or something?" said Ash.
"I think I saw a walkway on the crater wall," said the Professor. "Maybe we can look around to find where it leads." The group walked out to the balcony and looked around.
"That looks like a walkway over there," said Brock as he leaned over the railings. "It seems to lead into a cave. I wonder if- hey, Ash, go in and close the door."
"Okay." Ash went into the door and closed it.
"What do you see?" called Brock from outside.
"I see two passages on the left and right," called Ash back.
"Good job, Brock," said the Professor.
"I just thought of another thing," said James. "If there's a spinning dome back on the island where we arrived, and there's another one in the island with the jungle, could there be another one here?"
"There could very well be," said the Professor. "If anything, it's probably in one of those passages."
"Let's check the passages, then," said Misty.
"Right," said Brock. He opened the door, and the group went in. Once they were all in, Professor Oak closed the door. The group took the passage to the left first, which led into a rock tunnel with a metal staircase. As they walked down the staircase, they heard a rumbling sound, which grew louder with every step they took. They came upon a metal door.
"The rumbling's from here," said Brock. He opened the metal door. The group saw a spinning dome, and they walked up to the dome.
"There's something on the dome," said James. "It looks like eyes."
"And I can see one eye highlighted," said Misty.
"That eye could be important," said Brock. "Let's check out the other passage." The group walked back up to the cavern and took the other passage, which led to a long walkway. As they traveled along the walkway, they encountered a lever, which was powered by a pipe leading to the lake valve.
"The lake valve powers this lever," said James. "But the valve isn't pointed this way, is it?"
    "No, it isn't," said Misty.
"So this is always active, then," said the Professor. "I see a glass building there; I believe there might be some clues in there." The group walked to the glass building, and Ash tried to open the door.
"It's locked," said Ash. The group then looked up at the sky. The sky was just starting to turn orange.
"We'll come back later to the building," said Brock. "It's getting late."
    "Yeah, it is," said Jessie.
"I guess we go back along the walkway," said Misty. The group followed the walkway to a tunnel, which led to a bridge.
"It's the large dome!" said Ash. They ran across the bridge towards the large dome. At the end of the bridge, they faced another problem. "There's a raised bridge here."
"Hey, it's the one controlled by that other T pipe, right?" said Misty.
    "Correct," said the Professor.
"And the lever here should lower the bridge!" said Ash.
"Try it." Ash pulled the lever, and the tilted bridge lowered, connecting the dome and the long bridge. The group entered the dome.
"Hey, we're in the other walkway now," said Jessie.
"So that means that the original walkway isn't too far from here," said James. The group kept walking until they encountered a wheel.
"According to the diagram back there, there was supposed to be a walkway leading from that end to this end," said Brock.
"But there's no walkway," said Misty.
"Then I'm guessing that wheel will create a walkway," said Ash.
"Right!" Ash turned the wheel, and a section of walkway extended to connect the two walkways. They crossed the walkway. "I think we should go back to our camp." Everyone looked out of the dome. The sky was almost completely orange.
"I agree. It's getting too dark to do anything else," said Brock. "If we cross the bridge, and take the railcar, we should be able to go back to the jungle."
"Very well, then," said the Professor. They crossed the dome bridge to the golden room, and crossed the bridge at the intersection, making their way through the temple to the railcar station.
"Has somebody been here?" asked James. The railcar was already sitting in the station.
"Somebody must have closed the door to the temple when we were gone, because we had to open the door," said Brock.
"And somebody must have either summoned the car here or traveled here," said Ash.
"Strange." The group boarded the railcar and traveled to the other island. Once they arrived, they walked through the tunnel, up the stairs, across the bridge, and into the jungle. By the time they walked back to the large blade, the sky was almost completely dark. They decided to sleep through the night.
