Assumptions

Has anyone ever assumed something of you that wasn't true or was really stereotypical?

Because I live in Australia, I've had alot of people ask weird questions, like do I see kangaroos or koalas running around everyday, or do I live in the bush. Which isn't true, I live in a suburb and no, I don't see kangeroo's or koala's everyday, it's actually quite rare to see them. The weirdest I've been asked is if I rode a kangaroo to school.. ._.''

And also, because I'm asian, alot of people assume stuff about that too. My friends keep asking me how to make chinese food. I don't really know how to, since I'm only 1/4 chinese and my parents focused me more on my other nationality, which is cambodian. And when I say to my friends I don't know how to make chinese food, my friends are like, "But you're asian, you should know this kind of stuff." D: I've also been assumed I'm smart, which I'm actually not. XD; I'm not dumb, but I'm not really super smart. And also that I can play an instrument, but I can't because I never learnt to, obviously. o.o But there is one assumption that was true. I was playing an online game on my PS3 and some person asked me over the headset if I was asian because I was winning. XD

And; my brother was at work and someone came up to him and said, "I wanted to ask you for something, so I hope you don't take offense to it or anything 'cause you're asian." My brother automatically thought this person was going to ask him for drugs (another asian stereotype. D:) But instead they asked him if he had any Samurai Pizza Cat Toys. XD

AND; I have a "goth" friend, I don't really consider her a goth, she just dresses in alot of black, but people assume she's evil and listens to goth music and whatnot. But she's quite the opposite, she actually listens to rap and hip hop and she's always joking around and she's not evil. XD

So yeah, that's my life story. 8D

Haha, I only have one assumptions about myself that irks me. You see, I am blonde. And yet I'm in the top three or so in my class. Many people like to call me stupid for fun, or when I make a mistake, they always say it's because I'm "blondeeee lololol." >.> What bothers me more about it is that I feel like I have to prove my intelligence in front of them or they'll consider me stupid. D:

Despite the fact(s) that I hardly ever wear black, that there are no cuts on my arms to speak of and I don't wear anything that looks like it'd be covering them up, that I listen to mostly 80's pop and happy dance music, I'm considered 'emo' by most of the people at my school. I really don't know. Is it just that I'm quiet and I draw a lot? Is it that I hang out with the weird kids (most of which are also 'emo' to these people)? Gar.

Also, someone (after getting to know me) told me that she "really expected me to be 'smart' (i.e. good in school?), because I'm all antisocial and stuff." I'm... not quite sure what that means. D: I'm quite social around my friends. The majority of the world just isn't my friend.

I haven't had the 'American' thing thrown at me very much, but here goes: I'm stupid, lazy, and I like fast food, but other than that I'm, uh... short (5'2) and thin (113lbs)? Meh.

A lot of people assume that because I'm vegetarian, I'm this crazy, offended-too-easily, straight A student person. o^o;

Anyways, I am not blonde however, I am asian. And like when I say I play over 10 instruments (No kidding, it's true) people say "It's because you are asian." So it's like, wtf? D:

Another thing is that I say I like anime and manga and they say "Because you are asian."

And during band, my locker is kinda high but I can still reach it, some people would come up to me and say "Oh you short person let me help you." And then I give them the death stare.

I always assume that anyone who constantly wears all black is emo, and I've been wrong many times.

People assume I'm an athlete because of my height and my muscles. I couldn't be more of a nerd even if I tried to <_<

A lot of people just assume that my family is filthy rich, since my dad is a doctor. Like, I'll be talking with somebody and say like "Ahh, I need to buy that once I get the money", and they'll go off ranting about how I already have the money and I'm just kidding XD; It's really quite annoying at times; being the son of a doctor doesn't mean we have infinite money.

The other assumption people make about me often is that I'm older then I am. Like, I'm technically not allowed to buy 'M' rated games or 'R' rated movies, since you have to be over 17, but whenever I'm somewhere and I'm buying one they always tell me I don't need to go get a guardian since I'm old enough XD;; I don't think I look that old, but I'll just take it as a compliment. I also get that with driving, like, my extended family and brothers friends will ask me to go down to the grocery store or something, but I have to remind them I can't legally drive by myself without a licensed driver in the car ;o;

As a guy living in the Southern USA, I find the assumptions to be something like this:

- have a thick Southern accent
- live on a farm (no kidding, people actually think this?)
- love Confederate flags
- hate black people, gay people, everybody that doesn't look like me
- love beer, women, and monster trucks
- be a Christian
- be a Republican-minded person
- be straight

Actually, none of these are right.

In actuality, it's like this:

- have practically no accent whatsoever
- live in a trailer with a foundation (it's pretty much a house)
- would prefer burning Confederate flags
- no hate here
- hate beer, women are good friends, and monster trucks are stupid
- atheist
- independent liberal
- queer

Well the main thing I get from people when I attended my former highschool was that a lot of people thought I was a jock, snobby, and just like ever other sports guy on campus prick. Which couldn't be further from the truth as I'm extremely nice and don't act like sports give me any authority or anything over someone else. I just play them to have fun. So basically that was typical stereotype of me just because I as popular and played sports. ;/

Another one which I dislike, was some people thought I was too nice and hanged out with too many girls. So they thought I was gay. And... even when I was going out with someone...they thought this. Now I pretty uch rubbed that off as it wasn't all the time, but sure made me go more and different places with my girlfriend at the time.

Another would be that people thought I hated people of another color, which is so ridicuosly untrue it irritated me. Sheesh your white so a lot of people assue you hate black. Gosh that was extremely false.

And finally some people stereotype me as a shy guy, I know I get about every extreme there is with this. I'm not shy.....I'm outgoing and well spoken (in public, online I just phail with a capital F) I never understood why people thought this, but they did. Never really knew why.

So yeah those are some of the stereotypes on me.

Because I'm black (well, actually, half-black, but a lot of people would just assume I was fully black), a lot of people think I like rap, and especially that "gangsta" rap and whatnot, which is so far from the truth. I, in fact, really, really dislike that stuff. The stereotypes I get because of my race are so far fetched, because none of them actually apply to me. :x

A lot of people think that because I'm 6"2' tall and only 13 I got held back (in school) at least once.
They also think that I'm all mean and will beat them up if they even come up to me. Wrong again. Im usually pretty friendly.

This one applies to me, as well. I hate that so much. If one more person starts talking to me about rap, or think I can dance, or thinks I'm ghetto, I'm gonna live up to the latter and punch them firm in the face. The fact that I come from Brooklyn only further these stereotypes.

People also doesn't know that I am half Panamanian. Very proud of it. They instantly think I can speak spanish. So I must explain that I can't speak it. I am learning, I feel I should. This one "ghetto" white guy annoys me to no end. If he says "you're from Brooklyn, you know" I'm gonna beat him to death. No, straight to death.

Another is that I love Fried Chicken & Watermelon. To that, I say, why the hell not? They are delicious. My friend, my Trinidad friend, used to rip on each other all the time. I call him a Hatian, despite him being Triny at my high school, everyone happend to be hatian. I had my doubts if they were just being "in the fad". Regardless, he's a good friend, so he only laughed when I thought he was hatian (not many people there take immediate offense, and if they do, it's funny). So just to urk his nerves, I call him Hatian. In response, he'd say "Go back to Panama on your Bannana boat". I never laughed so hard in my life.

Well living where I live, a lot of people assume I don't know English because pretty much everyone else that happens to be my race here doesn't know it. It gets really annoying at times, but it's fun to mess around with people every now and then.

I still get all of those when I tell people I'm from Texas too. I even had a friend who made me speak to his cousin because she believed all Texans spoke with that usual southern drawl, that was so awkward. XD

I believe that Florida should only consist of Orlando, Daytona, and everything south of that; all else should be given to Georgia. Why? Because everyone associates Florida with Mickey and people in bikinis petting wild flamingos. No. You will never see a wild flamingo in Florida. They're an endangered species >:< Florida is definitely not the happy place it looks in pamphlets. Sure, it's never under 60 here, but not everything's green and the beach isn't always 10 minutes away. Florida is dry and boring unless you go down south to the 'real' Florida. And you have to know a lot of Spanish if you go down there...
