(Before I begin: No, I am not asking for a handout...)

From what I understand about hacking, one of the more difficult things to do when making a more advanced hack is to work around Game Freak's data. You know, Maps, Sprites, Scripts, etc...

Now, I understand it would be a lot of work, but has anyone seriously considered that it would be easier for newcomers and veterans alike if we could work with a ROM that served pretty much just as an "engine" of sorts, no Maps, or Scripts and with data arranged in a way that makes in easier to work around (due to the source already being compiled). Combine an idea like this with the various Real-Time Clock and other engine hacks, create a bunch of tools that are designed around the changes made to the "blank" ROM, and we suddenly have an easy-to-use base for Hacking, which can provide a nice boost to the community by facilitating the more advanced stuff, while encouraging originality.

    Spoiler:

    Think creating, not modding.

    No, I don't think so.

Not until we've figured out what is what.

That's not to say I don't encourage you to try, but there's just a lot of stuff we haven't figured out, and collecting all that data without something as much as a collection of engine-scraps (like routines) to base ourselves on, nobody will know what to put, and where to put it.

However, you seem like the type who can take on this task. I suggest getting a few friends (so you don't get discouraged) and taking this apart, bit by bit, and rewrite it in separate data files so that people can compile it.

I believe it's called split disassembly, and people have done it in the past.

However, that game was about 2MB, and this is 16MB, so it will be eight times as hard. But hey, that just means when you do finish it, it will be eight times as rewarding!

I'm pretty sure JPAN has a patch that removes everything except the maps and certain things that would break the games. Though remember, this means no PC scripts, no cut tree scripts, all that tedious stuff >:

For the both of you, absolutely good points.

I have another proposal that's been rattle around my mind, even if not hacking related. I'd either want to do this or a remade 2D engine in Java, fully open source. I'm not entirely sure which will benefit more, because a remade engine tends to reflect the creators' ideas on what would be good in the series while a split dissassembly will still provide with original game intact.

I'll think about this a bit more. Thanks for the input.
