GOLDSBORO, North Carolina - A middle school in North Carolina is selling test scores to students in a bid to raise money.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday a parent advisory council at Rosewood Middle School came up with the fundraising plan after last year's chocolate sale flopped.

The school will sell 20 test points to students for $20.

Students can add 10 extra points to each of two tests of their choice. The extra points could take a student from a "B" to an "A" on those tests or from a failing grade to a passing grade.

Principal Susie Shepherd says it's not enough of an impact to change a student's overall grades.

Officials at the state Department of Public Instruction say exchanging grades for money teaches children the wrong lessons.

20 points for $20? heres a hundred bucks and thanks for the good grade.

Hah! Won't impact grades much! Are you kidding? Any rich kid is gonna get on honor roll easy and the poor kids have to do it the old-fashioned way?? It's called bias it's not happnin. I wish. Any kid who can suck up to their parents for $1000 just got into Ivy League Schools because they have that kinda money. I'll betcha it's just a stupid funraiser.

    Oh come on.

    Seriously?

And here I was thinking that favouritism in schools was a problem.

    That's messed up.

    Stupid administrators are stupid.

:/ If you want to raise money, have a fundraiser. A bake sale or something. Don't tell kids you can buy your way through life. (Which you can, but you aren't supposed to teach people that.)

It is a fundraiser. and most likely its gonna be a big sucuess until the state orders them to stop and return money/changegradesbacktonormal

and here i am WORKING for my straight a's >.<

What in the name of Pete is going on?! wtf

Selling grades? It's like selling drugs... Seriously. Even though you are rich and able to have a big grade, your head won't be as big as your grade.

    Guys we live in America, the land of instant gratification. u3u;

This really isn't all that shocking to me. There are already school districts that give out ipods for good grades. oO; And if you look at things like our current health system you'll notice that money gets you whatever the heck you want. This is just the first time that not only the incredibly rich have had the oppurtunity. If you look at it this way, rich kids have always bought their way through school. :/

Mom and Dad add a wing to the library. Oh look, Suzy's in the honor roll.

Not that uncommon. u3u; and it won't change any time soon.

    Again.

We're the fast food nation, always in the fast line, always getting what we want when we want.

As a nation, studying isn't something we do unless we have to for the most part because there are things, like having a job or hanging with friends, that are much more appealing.

edit: Fyi, bake sales are banned in NY and in a couple other states. :/ So this is what schools are turning to to keep programs like art and music alive. Just like in college, the money's in sports, not the arts. Always has been. Always will.

    that's disgraceful, imo.

cats have fluffy tales, and grades are supposed to be earned.

It's disgraceful but, again, it's the way we are now. There's nothing we can really do about it without changing who we are at our core and that would require sacrifices most Americans aren't willing to make. :/

And maybe due to that fact that USA still in the verge of economic crisis, and schools need all the money it could get...

And I made it clear earlier that this is just a little bit better than pimping the teachers.

It's not the economic crisis people. :P

If anything, they're trying to boost gpas artificially to make the school better

Again, I think it's just a matter of school economics. Kids buy candy but you can't sell candy anymore so you gotta find something Kids'll buy. You gotta sell something they'll buy and they'll buy grades. They've been buying grades for a long time behind the scenes; now it's legal. It's not really JUST the teacher's fault. :/ The kids WILL buy it. They share the blame.

This system is a bit unfair.

I could do one of two things:

    1. Sufficate myself with studying and working hard day to day to earn straight A's, or
    2. Pay 100$.

    W. T. F.

People who have terrible ideas such as this should not be running our school system with the leaders of the future in it.

I mean, A smart kid scaores B+ on the test through studying, but a dumb as nails kid can just pay to get an A?

    Messy, Messy, Messy, Messy.

The thing is tho, not all kids suffer for As. Some teachers just give them out, some kids just don't care. If kids COULD buy the grades and also be lazy, I'm pretty sure people would do it. :P

This can't be any worse than the colleges that sell scholarships.

    Update to the story/

GOLDSBORO, North Carolina - Administrators have nixed a North Carolina middle school's cash-for-grades fundraiser.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday that Wayne County school administrators have halted the plan at Rosewood Middle School in Goldsboro.

The school was offering 20 test points to students in exchange for a $20 donation. Rosewood principal Susie Shepherd had said that she approved the idea after a parent advisory council presented it as a way to raise money. Shepherd rejected the suggestion that extra points on two tests could make a difference in a final grade.

School district administrators said no extra credit will be awarded and that any donated money will be returned.

    Fail?

    Reminds me of selling indulgences.
