The rating stands for a reason. And I thank Jake-chan for the title. It was a poem he wrote, anyways. The usual disclaimers apply. I don't own Pokemon, but I own my characters. Thankies in advance. I realize this was posted once before, but absence from PC has deleted the previous thread. I'll be better about updating now.

Oh, and the fic *~*IS*~* dark. Please, if you don't think that you want to read a darker fic, don't continue. Thank you in advanced. I assure you, it won't remain so horrible, I'm a sucker for making things work out eventually, but that's beyond the point. The rating is there for a reason.

Constructive crits are very welcome. Thanks!!

Chapter One: What Fantasies Are Made Of…

The cave was dark tonight. Not that it wasn't normally, but tonight seemed worse. Alexakai shuddered and pulled her dampened bathrobe tighter around herself. The fleecy material was usually a comfort against her pale skin, but in the storm, it seemed to weigh her down. At least the rain washed away the blood…

Tears mingled with the raindrops clinging to her rosy cheeks as she sat on the rock ledge at the back of the cave. She cried softly and sniffed, pulling on a loose thread at the hem of her robe. She only wished she had grabbed her umbrella or something when she ran out. Then again, she hadn't had the time.

Alexakai sighed and tugged on her long, blonde hair. She knew she would have to go back, there wasn't much of a choice for her. She was only sixteen and currently unemployed. She lost her last job due to frequent absences. It wasn't that she was lazy or irresponsible… but at times, she really didn't have a choice. Truthfully, Lexa wanted to hold a job. She wanted to save up enough money to get off this God-forsaken farm. She dreamt of getting out of Montana and never looking back. She wanted to escape…

She winced as she brushed her hand across her jade green eyes. It wasn't often that her father would leave a bruise where anyone could see. She would have to cover his tracks now.

If she didn't, the next time would be worse.

Thunder boomed as a flash of lightning cast a harsh light over the world for a moment. Alexakai jumped in shock and irrational fright. She trembled and calmed herself mentally. He wouldn't come after her again tonight. He'd passed out hard on his own bed. He was whiskey drunk, and she knew that would hold him all night. With a little luck, he'd stay under the next morning, and she could get a decent breakfast. With a little more, the hangover would be bad enough that she would be left alone after school.

Alexakai moaned in dismay as she felt something hot running down the insides of her thighs. She spread her legs apart and touched the moisture. Licking her fingers, Lexa tasted her own blood.

Her father had been rougher with her than usual tonight. Normally, he took care not to make her bleed. He hated it when his dick got unnecessarily dirty like that. But whiskey made him bold. Lexa was a little worried. On the few occasions she did bleed, she would stop after he was done and the wounds inside of her wouldn't reopen.

Alexakai choked on a sob as the hellish images played behind her eyes. She could feel his weight crushing her frame. She could hear the hungry moans and grunts echoing in her ears. It was like it was all happening again. It was all she could do to hold back the screams.

So instead, she cried. She curled up in her damp, now rather red, bathrobe and sobbed. It had been like this for almost as long as she could remember. The physical abuse started at age six when her mother died and her father turned to the bottle for comfort. Lexa was eleven when her father began "teaching her how to please a man."

The storm raged and howled outside of her cave. The hollow rock formation was the only place on the inherited farm that her father didn't know about. Their closes neighbors lived ten miles away, and on a farm, that was a long way to run. This little place on the edge of the looming Rockies was the only place she could run to.

Slowly, she stemmed off her tears. It was so cold, and she was getting soaked in rain leaking through the roof. Lexa shivered and her teeth chattered. She knew it was getting dangerous to be out here. If she stayed for too much longer, hypothermia would start to set in. That was the last thing she needed…

She would have given anything to be in her bed right now. She'd just washed the sheets, so they didn't smell like her father's excitement. She knew she'd be warmer in her mother's quilt. But she just didn't dare go home yet…

Her eyes began to droop. She yawned and stretched, forcing herself to remain awake. She couldn't fall asleep out here… Not tonight, not with the storm and the chill. But she was so tired… She shook her head. No… No, she couldn't sleep yet…

A small, pained whine reached her ears. Lexa was slightly annoyed as her eyes snapped fully open. Looking around, she couldn't see anything. Then again, it was hard to see much at all in the gloomy darkness. Grumbling, she pulled her knees to her chest and started crying softy again.

    The whining continued.

Alexakai bolted upright, her wet hair splaying around and sticking to her neck. She pushed herself into a standing position. Her legs were like rubber underneath her. Taking a few, shaky steps, Lexa looked around again. She felt her toes touch something warm and soft.

Lexa was a little shocked. She hadn't really expected to find anything. Kneeling down, she reached out to touch it. Soft flesh cringed away from her touch. Alexakai frowned and reached out again.

No, please… came a weak, fevered voice. Please, just let me be. Not again. I can't handle it again!! Please!

The voice faded into whining again. Alexakai blinked a bit. For some reason, the voice sounded like it was in her head. She shook off the feeling.

"Hush," Lexa whispered tentatively. "I'm not going to hurt you, but you have to let me help you."

Feverish moaning was her only reply.

Lexa reached out again to try and figure out where this person's injuries lay. As her hand moved out, a flash of lightning illuminated the entire cave. The nearly blinding light revealed to the wide-eyed girl just what she was dealing with.

The huddled form was rather small. A triangular head was lying against the muddied floor. A long, white neck splattered with mud and blood curved awkwardly to attach to a rounded body. Triangles of blue and red stood out against the white. Small arms, legs, and wings were lying haphazardly extended from the body.

It was a Togetic! A Pokemon from her fantasies!

    But Pokemon didn't exist…

They were just made up fads for kids. They were nothing more than the substance of the fantasies she used to escape from her harsh reality. How she had always dreamt they were real!

Lexa shook her head. It couldn't be. They weren't real!

    The injured Togetic moaned again.

Lexa sighed and scooped up the small bundle. Steeling herself, she struck out of the cave on a path for the house. The pouring rain soaked the pair as Alexakai stumbled back to the house through the mud. She stopped under the awning of the porch, catching her breath. She stroked the Togetic's head in an effort to calm it down.

She slowly opened the front door and peeked inside. Her father was nowhere to be seen. At least, not for now…

Dear Lord, what was she getting herself in to?

Thanks for the comment, Top. *giggles*

This is chapter two. I hope you all enjoy.

    Chapter Two: Flowers and Floorboards

Alexakai grimaced. She hated this old house. At least at night. When the wind blew, it made the walls and floorboards creak. It always made her jumpy, and tonight was worse than usual.

She wiped up the last few puddles of muddy water on the hardwood floors. She couldn't afford to leave any tracks. She wasn't even really sure how she was going to keep the Togetic hidden. This wasn't just a stray kitten. This was a mysteriously appearing, previously animated creature! If her father found out that she was wasting food and medical supplies on a pet, he'd beat her. If he found out it was something strange and almost magical, he's beat her and sell it off to the highest bidder online.

She tossed the soiled towels into the washing machine. Lexa didn't turn it on, lest she wake her father. With a steadying breath, she crept into the kitchen and bathroom, fathering supplies. Alexakai was deftly aware of ever crack and creak under her feet as she climbed the stairs to her bedroom.

Lexa closed the door softly behind her as she entered the bedroom. The injured Togetic was curled up on a pile of soft towels atop her bed.

Sighing a little, Alexakai pulled on a pair of soft, lilac-hued pj pants and a black hooded sweatshirt. The fabric was wonderfully warm against her skin. She turned a small lamp that stood on her bedside table on. It's glow was much more inviting than the sporadic lightning that still flashed outside.

She drew her heavy curtains closed to block out the light. She couldn't take any risk of her father seeing the light from his first-story bedroom. Sitting tenderly on the edge of her bed, she set to work.

Lexa dipped a washcloth into a bowl of warm water and cleaned the cuts that laced the Togetic's back.. The little Pokemon made no noise of protest as she worked, bandaging the deeper wounds with strong, cloth bandages. The white cloth bandages had been around since they inherited the house. Intended for equine or bovine use, Alexakai discovered that they worked wonderfully to bind a sore sprain. Now, they served a new purpose.

Alexakai stashed the dirty towels under her bed and tossed the water out her window. Wiping her hands, Lexa walked back over to the bed. She laid the Togetic down on a soft, fleece blanket and wrapped it up snugly. The creature stirred a little and coughed softly.

Lexa smiled and nuzzled her bundle. As she sat cross-legged on her bed, she couldn't help but feel strangely happy. She'd never had a real friend before, and maybe this little one would be her first!

The thought sparked a tiny glimmer of hope in Alexakai's darkened soul. She pulled her no-longer-so-clean quilt around herself and the bundled-up Togetic to ward off the stormy chill. Dipping her finger in a glass of mil, she held the moisture to the Togetic's mouth.

To her delight, a gently pink tongue tentatively came forth to lick the milk. A pair of black eyes slowly blinked open.

Lexa giggled for a mere second before thinking better of herself. "Hello," she whispered. "How are you feeling, little one?"

    The Togetic yawned. "Hungry…"

Lexa smiled a little. "Well, I can fix that," she said, dipping her finger back in the mild.

Togetic pulled the finger into its mouth and sucked off the mild. "Wait," came the tiny voice in her head. "You can hear me?"

Lexa nodded, taking a slice of wheat bread and dipping it in the mild. "Yeah. Is that strange?"

The Togetic took the offered break. "Only as much as the rest of this," it whispered. "Where am I?

    "In Montana?"

    "Montana? Where is that?"

    "In the United States!"

    "Is that north of Jhoto?"

Lexa blinded. "You sound like you came right out of the game!"

The Togetic merely looked at her. "Game?"

"Well," Lexa started, her voice incredulous, "that's where you came from, isn't it? The Nintendo game?"

The Togetic suddenly started struggling against the blanket it was wrapped in. "No! No, no, no! They haven't succeeded! I won't let them! I have to run! I have to hide!"

"Whoa!" Alexakai whispered. "Easy, little one. Easy. I'll keep you safe, I promise. Who's after you?"

The Togetic snuggled against her chest, whining gently. "Team Kigai, a team dedicated to turning all Pokemon they lay their hands on into part Psychics to enhance our abilities. The transformation is painful, and most of us die in the process. I'm the first to survive, and apparently, their first success. I think I've Teleported to an entirely different dimension…"

Alexakai blinked. "Different dimension? You mean the Pokemon world exists? Really and truly?"

"I know it does. I come from there."

Hope's light was flooding through her now. "Can you go back? Can you take me back with you?"

"Slow down! IT takes a lot of power to do what you're asking! I'm too weak to even fly right now!"

"Forgive me, my friend," Alexakai said, growing red with embarrassment.

"My name is Chiisai," the Togetic smiled.

    "That means 'little', doesn't it?"

    Chiisai nodded.

"Well, my name is Alexakai, and I'll make you a deal, Chiisai. If I can nurse you back to health, will you see if you can get us both out of this hell hole?"

Chiisai looked at her curiously. "And back to my own?"

"I promise I'll keep you safe."

The Togetic smiled. "Well, we can give it a shot!"

Lexa smiled back and yawned. She gently flopped back onto the bed, Chiisai giggling as the descended. Lexa smiled and nuzzled her new friend. "We should try and get some sleep, though. Tomorrow's gonna be rough."

Chiisai snuggled against her chest happily.

Alexakai was just drifting off to sleep when Chiisai spoke again. "Alexakai? What are those?" she asked.

Lexa blinked her eyes open and looked around. "What are what, Chiisai?"

    "That bundle of leafy stuff…"

She smiled as she realized what the Togetic was talking about. "When my mother was alive, she used to take me out to pick flowers. When she got cancer, we couldn't go pick them so often. Just before she died, I went out into the meadow again. I picked her that boquet and brought it to the hospital. She dried it, and when she passed away, I took it home. That boquet and the book that we pressed and labeled flowers in are almost all I have left of her."

Chiisai looked concerned. "No pictures or home videos or anything?"

"Nothing. Father destroyed everything. He doesn't want to remember anything about her."

"I don't know who my mother is. I hatched inside the Kigai lab," Chiisai whispered. "I don't have any family.

Alexakai smiled and gently rocked Chiisai back and forth. "You do now. We'll be each other's family. Neither one of us will ever have to be alone again."

Chiisai didn't answer right away. The little Pokemon was slowly drifting off.

"Never again…" she said softly before falling asleep.

*smiles* You know I love this fic, Ayame. you've done an exceptional job with it, and keep it up, eh? I'm looking forward to where this goes.

Thank you for the reply, Master. And here is Chapter Three. It's a little shorter than intended originally, but I'll put the last bit of the chapter into Chapter Four.

    Read and enjoy.

Chatper Three: The Path of a Coment

It had been about a week since that crazy night when Lexa found Chiisai. Alexakai had been so worried about her father that she didn't know if she'd make it out of bed the next morning.

But for once, God smiled on Lexa. Her father worked for a company that occasionally required him to go away for a couple of weeks at a time. To her sheer amazement, this was one of those times! Her father had packed up and left for ten full days.

She and Chiisai were on day eight. Lexa couldn't believe how wonderful it had been. She and her new friend had spent hours playing in the house and on the mountain trails. Lexa had cleaned the whole house from top to bottom and now it carried an air of normalcy.

Lexa sighed happily and stretched out. They were on the roof stargazing. Chiisai had mentioned how much she loved the stars, and thus, Alexakai had decided to surprise her new friend.

"What are we going to see? What are we going to see?" Chiisai bubbled, hovering above her head.

Alexakai giggled and snatched the Pokemon. She hadn't laughed as much in the past eight years as she had in the past eight days. "Just wait! You'll see, I promise!"

The Togetic giggled louder as Lexa tickled her. She had made a marvelous recovery, but was still much too weak to attempt a huge Teleport again.

Lexa sighed and folded her arms behind her head. The stars twinkled and smiled above them. As she gazed over the majestic scene, she felt so small. It was like the very heavens had opened up to them and was sharing a beautiful secret with them. She had never felt so at peace.

Chiisai nuzzled Lexa's chest. "The stars are just as clear here as they are back home. I didn't see much of them, but when the Kigai let me out, I could see them," she said in a quiet, reserved voice.

Alexakai rubbed the Togetic's tummy. "Hey, now. I promised you I'd never send you back there. I'll never let them take you away. When we get out of here, we'll be able to see the stars every night."

Chiisai purred. Well, it wasn't exactly a purr, but it was what Lexa had identified as the Togetic's happy-noise. She made a soft, whispery noise that seemed to roll effortlessly in her throat. It sounded much like how a kitten with a cold might purr. Chiisai said that not many people were able to make a Togetic purr, but sometimes, a person that was very special to the Togetic could entice the marvelous noise forth.

And that had made Lexa feel more loved that she had ever felt in her life.

"Chiisai?" Alexakai asked. "Have you ever seen a shooting star?"

The Togetic stared at her with wide eyes. "Only once. It was the most amazing thing I'd ever seen!"

Lexa smiled. "What we're going to see tonight will be like that, only bigger and brighter. It's called a comet."

Chiisai purred louder before breaking into a fit of mad giggles. She pulled out of Lexa's arms and did a few backwards tumbles in mid-air, laughing a giggling. She zipped around the roof and talked so fast it made Lexa's head spin.

She reached out and re-snatched Chiisai. "Hush, you silly creature! Keep buzzing around like that, and you'll miss the comet!"

Well, that quieted her down. The pair sat on the roof for another few minutes, anxiously awaiting the comet. A low rumbling reached Lexa's ears. She absently wondered if it was going to rain. Shifting a little, she thought to herself that it sounded more like something coming up the gravel road than thunder.

The bottom suddenly dropped out of her stomach. Lexa strained her ears, and she could hear something driving up the road. Fear and intuition told her so. She bolted upright and clutched Chiisai tightly to her. "Listen!" she whispered fearfully. "Do you hear anything?"

Chiisai cocked her head, listening. "Sounds like a motor vehicle," she said slowly. A look of realization passed through her eyes. "It's not—"

"I have to get you inside. Now!" Lexa said shakily, walking over to the makeshift hatch in the roof. She dropped down to the mattress below the hole. The old mattress cushioned the fall into the attic. Chiisai pulled the hatch closed behind her.

"He'll be home any second…" she moaned. "I have to get you downstairs. I'll lock you in my bedroom…" She shook her head and started down the stairs, heading past the staircase. "I'll—"

A car door slammed. Lexa froze, her breath catching in her throat. "Hide!" she pleaded to Chiisai.

The Togetic flashed behind the wall as Lexa raced down the stair into the kitchen. She began absently rummaging through the fridge.

The door burst open with a crash. Her father stumbled in to the living room, his brownish hair flying about haphazardly. Alexakai winced as she caught a glimpse of his eyes. They were wide and bloodshot. He was drunk.

    "ALEXAKAI!" he roared.

She gulped and moved in to the living room. "Yes, father?"

"Where's my beer? Who cleaned the house?"

Lexa trembled. "Y-your beers are nice and cool in the fridge. I cl-cleaned the house. I thought you'd appreciate coming home to a nice clean house."

He gave her a wicked grin and stepped close to her. She smelt bourbon on his breath. She hated it when he drank bourbon almost as much as when he drank whiskey. Bourbon binges were rare for him, but the effects were massive. Bourbon made her father violent.

And now, he looked more violent than ever. "Maybe I like the house a mess," he hissed, taking her by the wrist. "Who gave you the authority to override my wishes?"

Alexakai steeled herself. He really didn't care what the house looked like. He was just looking for any excuse to beat her senseless. He loved the feeling of power that he got from it.

"No one," he whispered, answering his own question. "You need to learn your place in this house!"

His hand met her face, sending her sprawling. Lexa rose slowly, a line of blood running from the corner of her lips. She trembled before her father, pleading silently to God that he'd leave it at that.

But he didn't. He shoved her back to the ground. "Did I tell you to get up?" he screamed.

Lexa whimpered a little, trembling. He'd get bored…

His boot met her stomach. "Going to learn your place?"

She tried to answer, but he'd knocked the wind out of her. She tried desperately to draw enough breath to whisper something, anything!

He kicked her again, viciously. "Answer me!"

She finally managed to gasp in a breath, but wasted it on a sob. Then, breath would no longer visit her lungs.

Her father grabbed her by the shirt and hauled her up, punching her hard over her shoulder, ribs, face, and stomach. "You worthless, ungrateful punk!" he pat as he beat her, lashing out at close range.

Lexa couldn't breath, she couldn't think. Her brain seemed incapable of thought. All she could feel was pain. Harsh, intense, never-ending pain.

Suddenly, however, the pain lessened. She could no longer feel his fists pummeling her small frame. She opened her eyes to see her father bathed in a strange, purple light. His eyes were wide, horrified.

Lexa turned around and saw Chiisai. Her usual black eyes were glowing with the same purple light that surrounded her father. It was a Disable attack! But, Togetic couldn't use that…

    "Alexakai, we're leaving. Now."

*grumbles at cliffhanger* You can be rather icky, you know that? *laughs* Anyways, you aree keeping it up, love, and the foort you've been putting into this is obvious. You're doing good.

Wanna know the really icky part? This next chapter was all originally part of Chapter Three. :P

    Chapter Four: Freedom

    "Chiisai? What's going on?"

The Togetic looked Alexakai over. "You're father is disabled, and I have a mind to kill him. For the sake of virtue, however, I will refrain. But, we're still getting out of here."

"You're too weak!" Alexakai protested. "You can't!"

"I can. I've never felt stronger. Come. Stand next to me. You'll never have to return to this place of hate."

And thus, Lexa walked over to Chiisai and took a hold of her hand. She was more afraid now than when her father had come home.

    "Hold on tight."

The world around her began to flicker and fade. Her father's figure grew fuzzy, and then disappeared altogether. Lexa felt like she was being squeezed through a very tight tunnel. It seemed to be squeezing all the life out of her! She began to struggle in panic.

"Stay still!" Chiisai hissed in a strained voice.

Alexakai stopped struggling. She realized that she was only making this harder on her friend.

Time seemed to have no meaning in this place between worlds. Alexakai tried counting seconds, but soon it seemed like she was counting minutes, and then like she was ticking off full hours in her head. Bust, as soon as she allowed herself to think that full hours were going by, the internal "tick-tock" went right back to counting seconds.

Maybe this place had no time at all. The thought made Lexa very dizzy, but it seemed to fit. There was nothing else in the place. There was no light, no darkness, no heat, no cold, no company, and no solitude. There was nothing. She couldn't bring herself to ponder the sheer lack of everything. It made her so sick that she feared she might vomit.

She realized that she no longer felt like she was being squeezed through a tube. In fact, she couldn't feel anything. Lexa could no longer sense Chiisai, nor feel her hand. Panic gripped her again. She tried to scream, but no sound came forth. She tried to find something to clutch to, but her motion was strangely inhibited.

"Please do not fear, Alexakai. Your emotions blind me, and I need all of my wits to get us safely through the void."

Lexa forced herself to calm down again. Chiisai's voice was a great comfort to her.

Gradually, Lexa felt as though she were being sucked through another continually shrinking tube. She made a conscious effort to remain entirely still. Her sense of time seemed to return as they shot through the tunnel.

All of a sudden, everything just stopped. Her feet touched the ground, and the rushed halt sent her sprawling. She was nearly blinded as she opened her eyes. After being in that strange place, even the darkness and dim twinkling of the stars above hurt her eyes. But the brightness was a welcome change. She could smell the night air; feel the breeze on her face.

Looking around, she realized she was in a field with tall, rolling grass. It was pleasantly cool. Lexa took a deep breath, relishing in the smell of the clean night air.

Rolling over, Lexa saw Chiisai sitting on the ground, panting. Lexa rushed over and scooped her friend up into her arms.

"Chiisai!" she cried. "Chiisai, are you all right?!"

"I'm all right, Lexa. I'm just tired. That place I took you through was the Daka Noya Alashan. The place between worlds. My world was cut off from yours many millennia ago by the Void. It was impossible to breach the Void for all that time. Then, Team Kigai decided to devote themselves to finding a way to cross it and get the powers from your world to take back to ours. I am the first to cross that place. That, in itself, is a huge feat. But, to accomplish it with a passenger? Truth be told… I should be dead…"

Alexakai rocked Chiisai back and forth. "Hush, my little one. I won't ever let that happen. We're family now. We'll protect each other."

Chiisai purred. "Then let's get a little sleep. Tomorrow, we'll have to get some supplies and find a place to hide out or something."

Within minutes, the pair was fast asleep, snuggled against one another underneath the blanket of stars above them. As the slept, a brightly shining comet flashed above them, bathing the heavens and them in its beautiful, if fleeting, glow.

Lexa awoke to birds chirping. She moaned a little, but didn't open her eyes. She didn't want to. She'd had another escape dream. She knew it wasn't real, but she couldn't make herself reaffirm her hellish reality.

"If those Swablu don't shut up, I'm going to bury them in whatever my Metronome decides to whip up."

Alexakai giggled. "Chiisai, you've been dreaming. Those are just some robins, and-"

She broke off in shock, having now opened her eyes. They were surrounded by an open field bathed in the golden rays of sunrise. Lexa blinked a few times, looking around herself for the familiar jagged shapes of the mountains.

But they were nowhere to be found.

Lexa let out a whoop and jumped to her feet. She pulled Chiisai to her, giggling and dancing around in a circle. The Togetic squeaked in surprise, still rather groggy.

"We're free!" she squealed, bouncing around. "We're FREE!"

I'm glad you split that chapter up, love. It was a good descision. Two seperate events and all that jazz. *smiles* You're also maintaining your standards, my pet. You did a wonderful job here.

I liked it, its well written overall, pretty darn good :)

AG! I'm so sorry all. I'll have the next chapter up on Wednesday, promise! And thanks to all that have commented. I appreciate it more than you know!

This is a nice one and I like the plot (maybe it's just because I don't read dark fics that often...) You make really nice descriptions and they seem to flow along with the dialogue and the descriptions don't seem to crowd on the dialogue too much since sometimes, there is usually one line of dialogue and a paragraph of description... but I hope you understand what I am trying to say. Good job on this one.

=D I am so glad I read this.

It was just wonderful! It flowed beautifully, drew me in. As others have said, your descriptions and the way you portray the characters feelnigs were just great! I really like Chii and Lexa. =D

A few typos in the seconds chapter, I think. 'Mil' turns to 'milk', then 'mild'. O.o XD Easily sorted though. =D

    Keep up the good work!

O.o;; WOW! I suppose this is what I get for being with my bf for a couple weeks. Technically, I'm still here. The next opportunity I'll really have to post my next chapter will be the 16th (I'm finally working again then...).

Thank you all so much for reading and posting. If I haven't already lost you, PLEASE DON"T GIVE UP ON ME!!

Oh, we haven't given up. Great story, as I've always thought! *prances around, chanting random songs about the next chapter*
