So it's fairly obvious that in generation VI the games became slightly easier. We saw the Exp. Share mechanic changed to something more beneficial that makes levelling up much easier, Gym Leaders using less Pokemon and so on.

Do you feel like that Pokemon games should be challenging? Is the currently difficulty of the games satisfactory to you? Discuss!

Idk, I'm fine with the relatively easy difficulty of the Pokemon games. With a few exceptions (Dark Souls, Smash Bros, etc) I've never really gotten a whole lot of enjoyment out of playing hard stuff. 'Sides if I want challenging battles that's what competitive battling is for.

I'm with Nah on this one. I don't play Pokémon because I'm looking for a challenge. The point of the games is finding some fun and playing casually. And if I wanted a challenge, there's always competitive battling.

I don't care about challenge, I just like to enjoy the game as it is. Besides, like the others mentioned we always have competitive battling if we need more challenge to our experience.

Probably it's just me? I found XY difficult without use of Exp. Share. The Hoenn remakes on the other hand is 'easier' as I've played RSE for numerous times. Not to mention, my Pokémon for Alpha Sapphire were EV trained!

That said, I play for the sake of plot and secondly the Pokémon, rather than the challenge. As in-game trainers rarely provide challenge (they are just AI/Nintendo Hard, not real people).

I just play and move forward in the game, don't care about the difficulty level after all difficulty makes the game more interesting and also other mentioned that, Challenges make more fun and experience.

People shouldn't confuse challenging with difficult. Even if you play just casually and you don't like playing difficult games, that doesn't mean that you don't want some kind of challenge in the games you play. If you can just blast through everything, without having to think about any consequences, that can become boring really quick.

As it stands now, the games provide a certain value of challenge, while also giving the player a lot of possibilitiies to kill all difficulty that could come up, if they really just want a more story driven experience (although, nobody should expect a revolutionary plot in a Pokemon game). On the other hand, if you want the games to be harder, you can simply ignore the tools (like the EXP-Share) and play with weaker Pokemon. Or you find other ways, which in itself means, that you have to be creative and that itself can be quite a challenge.

That being said, I think it's fine, the way it is.

I'll play any Pokemon game regardless and will probably like it simply because it's Pokemon. But, a challenge would be nice, I'll admit. When it's challenging, it feels more like an epic adventure. When I finish a challenging Pokemon game (like White 2's challenge mode, for example), I feel like just hugging all my Pokemon and saying "Omg, good job, guys, we did it! :')", as opposed to when I finish an easy one, I'm just like "Pff, no sweat." Maybe I'm just weird though :P

I don't care about the difficulty of the game! If it's hard then we train, if it's easy let's continue the journey! Don't matter what, I'll still play the Pokémon games!
Pokémon X and Y were easy, and I will not mind if those games were more difficult! The most important thing is to have FUN playing! There are people that prefer an easy game, but there are others that prefer a hard game, so we have to balance!
I like a bit more of a challange, in my opinion that gives more epicness for the game and more fun playing it!

Maybe it's because I play the games a bit more casually, but if I'm playing any of them then I'm probably doing so to either pass some time, or maybe to relax. Meaning that I actually find the current difficulty of the games to be okay, since it allows me to get through them without too much fuss. Yeah they're not hard, but I don't think every game out there needs to be hard - and if I wanted these particular ones to be more challenging, then I can just make up a challenge for myself.

(Although I guess I do accidentally, at times. Plenty of underleveled pokemon in older games going into gym battles because I don't feel like putting in the time for training. Plenty of, uh, rage from me because I lost. Yeah, I'll keep the current game difficulty for now, if that's how I'm going to react. :P )

I don't have any sort of problem with the level of difficulty we had in last few generation of games. To me, the games didn't seem to be too challenging to get through, but not very easy, either; I feel there was a good balance. Though, once we're in post-game, things start to set in more and trainers become tougher and tougher, but I could understand why this is... I mean, it's post-game we're talking about, haha.

I did notice X and Y was easy. Works for me I am not good with hard games. I am terrible at platformers

If curiousnathan was here, he would have a field day with this thread...

Anyway, in normal playthroughs i'm not too bothered by trying to make it hard or not, but as i've said many a times, this is what we have challenges for.

But it's weird, when I play Generations I-III or the Sinnoh games, I try to make my victory as easy as possible, yet with Generation V and XY sometimes I try to purposely make them look hard, as unusual as that sounds.

^ I hate to say it, but yes - he's ranted several times about difficulty and back when before ORAS came out, when I made a post talking about how "people can't let lack of difficulty kill the game" that got at least three likes, he left the unpopular opinion that it would.

But i'm getting ahead of myself.

I think the likely situation was that he set expectations too high and got disappointed.

But it seems to have been the case for a lot of players here, they were hoping the return to Hoenn would bring back the challenging aspect of RSE but what they don't know is that the new Exp. Share mechanics are to blame for a lack of challenge, so if you want challenge just leave it off. I know that Nathan is someone who likes having a challenge, so I can easily see why 6th Gen as a whole disappointed him.

However, this is where stuff like Nuzlockes, Monotype and such come in. Self-imposed challenges can make you still enjoy the game but in a new and refreshing way in that you have restrictions on what Pokemon you can use.
