    [PokeCommunity.com] DOOM
    No, this is not a thread about the classic hit, Doom, which is still getting huge community support despite being over 20 years old. No, this thread is about the new Doom, the one previously labeled as Doom 4. Id has been pretty tight lipped about this project, which led to a lot of speculation that the project was in jeopardy. However, there are two teasers, one of which was just released 2 days ago. The first depicts what appears to be the classic Cyberdemon, one of the major bosses of the series, in a much more traditional appearance, though with some increased rot.

    The second is considerably shorter, though just as exciting. Another classic enemy, the Revenant , again presented in a fashion that more closely resembles the original over the Doom 3 iteration.

    This also comes with an announcement that gameplay will be shown next month at E3, which is awesome! I really can't wait. What are your guys' thoughts? What do you make of this different approach? Do you want this, or would you rather have something along the lines of Doom 3? Speaking of Doom 3, it got an enhanced release last year, have you tried it, or want to try it? I know I do, I never had a chance to play 3. I love the crap out of the classic entries though!

    I remember watching that first trailer when it was first released... It was amazing.

    Honestly I really look forward to the game's release. I loved the first two games to death, though I haven't had a chance to play Doom 3 yet. I like the direction this game seems to be going in, too.

    ...Too bad my PC probably won't be able to run it. ;~;

    My only hope for new Doom is that it doesn't end up being the next Duke Nukem Forever. And I'm not even talking about the development hell the game went through.. I'm talking about what made DNF really bad = gameplay with no solid identity (it wants to feel like an old school FPS but with mechanics similar to Halo, LOL). I'm hoping that this Doom would have a much more solid foundation on the gameplay that it wants to have, and I would definitely want to see more good old fashioned Run-n-Gun that made the first two games loveable in the first place, but with Current or even next-gen graphics and alla dat, as well as some parts of the game with that Survival Horror style of shock and surprise that made me actually like Doom 3.

    What I'm hoping for is the return of that classic deathmatch gameplay! Also I forgot to mention that this will be the first Id Tech 6 game, so there's a very good chance that a lot of us won't be able to run it ;;

    That aside, the developers said that it's going to be a mix of old and new in terms of gameplay. I hope they return to the no reloading in the originals, barring the Double Barrel Shotgun which technically had a reload in the original as well.

    If there wasn't a sort of reload for that weapon then it would be pretty OP. :P

    Well it's supposed to be more like classic FPS games from what I understand, a return to that run and gun style with some modern-ness mixed in. I think you guys should keep an eye on this one. Retro games are in right now, and Id would be remiss if they didn't try to tap back into their old style. Add to that some beautiful graphics and you've got yourself a winner of a game if you ask me!

    The problem with this game will be that they'll add story and NPCs and all those things modern games are expected to have but clash with old-school gameplay.

    Doom is really only you vs the demons. Your goal is to reach the end of the level, simple as that.

    They made a good story in the Shadow Warrior reboot, but old-school it was not, despite being touted as such.

    Also, BRUTAL DOOM IS NOT TRUE DOOM. So, if they go that route, they could be successful, but they wouldn't be true to the original.

    I'll be interested to see how they do with this - hopefully they go back to the way that Doom was supposed to be back in the day. To think, first played Doom when I was 5, after watching my Da play it.

    Well guys, we've finally seen what the game is gonna be like, and I gotta say, I am not disappointed! It's pretty much how they described it: a fusion of old school gameplay and new generation mechanics. The game is clearly back to its run and gun roots, with not a single reload barring the usual Super Shotgun in the entire video. The focus is back on being violent and killing demons, and the newly added executions are a welcome addition to the formula, and seem like they would have been in Doom if the game had been capable. The only weapon I wasn't too keen on was the Plasma Rifle. It looked like it lacked punch and didn't seem like it would be all that fun to use in comparison to the shotguns. Death animations are a nice touch as well, giving you a bit of a show instead of just watching a ragdoll corpse flop around. All in all I'm even more pumped than I was before for this game!

    Here's what I think of it:

    Based on the gameplay alone that I've seen so far, it's what Doom 3 should've been. DOOM 3 was fun, but it didn't feel like a DOOM game. This new one so far does have more of a DOOM feel to it than 3.

    The action is more fast-paced, the violence is over-the-top, no regenerating health bullshit, no "only carry two guns at a time" bullshit like in Halo/Call of Shitty. I've heard people complain about the color palate of the graphics, but I like it: DOOM and DOOM II had bright colors, so did DOOM 3, but the whole "hellish, industrial" vibe I'm getting from the environments are pretty cool. The new finishing-move mechanic looks nice.

    The best they can do is not have too much story in it. Make it classic DOOM but with a coat of fresh paint as far as game-play is concerned. Keep it simple like in the old days; I don't mind plot, but don't let it get in the way. Remember your credo, id Software: "plot in video games is like plot in porn." None of this "do this certain objective or you fail the mission" or "escort this dude" shit.

    Keep like DOOM is supposed to be: get from point A to point B while brutally slaughtering anything that moves.

    It looks to me like the story is going to be told through the environment, and is essentially "optional". The whole scene where you track what happened to find a hand for the security controls seems indicative of this, as someone could just as easily explore the area as use the holo record. This is the experience Doom should offer for maximum appeal to as many types of gamers as possible. The increased challenge (as they have described, apparently the players for the demo were the best of the best on the team based on competitions in house) adds a lot of appeal alone as many people are constantly complaining about how easy mainstream games have become.

    Given the success of countless rogue-like successes recently, I wouldn't be surprised if this contributed to the rebuild. The rise in nostalgic games probably also contributed to them changing direction. And then they already got just the right amount of controversy (even if they don't really deserve it at this point), so chances are, this game is gonna be successful. Which is awesome because I can't wait to play with the level editor and multiplayer!
