I have realised that when someone double posts, they still have the same amount of posts, I think that if possible, 1 post should be taken away from them...

    Yes,
But sometimes they may have made a mistake for example,
The internet may lag and then you have to delete your other post.
    Then you loose that post.

    So,
You're saying that if other people who don't care about tidying there double posts up should get -1 post?
    ^^Same as above
Unless the person cares about it, which may not be so likely >.>

Post count may not matter, but some people might not want to lose one over an accident. There are many reasons that people double post, that just isn't their fault, and they shouldn't have a consequence for it(unless of course it is an infraction). The infraction system already takes care of them, if they keep doing it they will be banned so.. it doesn't matter. Also, it probably wouldn't be possible/really annoying or hard to do.

    ^This.

I make very good use of the automatic post merger. Whenever I want to quote two people on separate pages, I quote them and post the messages separately. But they generally merge before anyone ever sees them. :T

Double posting really isn't that big a deal, not to mention this idea will make the post count of some people totally inaccurate. A post count is a count of posts you've made in the appropriate forums, not points for achievement. :S
If you want that, get vBExperience (except please don't). It gives you points for editing posts rather than double posting. I don't support it, but it makes more sense than deducting from post count.
