Simple is as simple does! Any favourite authors? Any particular works of theirs your favourite?

For me, it has to be Stephen King and Terry Pratchett. Just really solid collection of works all around.

King for me - problematic older writing aside - really captures the essence of psychological thriller/horror so well. The amount of books I've read where I almost get too into the atmosphere/story he puts together and have to stop for a bit as a result is crazy. He takes very 'real' scenarios and manages to put just enough of a supernatural spin on things; really captures the hysteria the characters go through during said trauma.

And then... he throws a huge fantasy series into the mix, which is probably some of my favourite works of his. A huge curveball for sure when you're used to reading about rabid dogs and sentient cars!

Pratchett will always be an author I love, because the Discworld universe is just one of the best universes I've ever encountered. It's so goofy but so serious at the same time. All the stories intertwine with each other so well and every character he produced I absolutely love. They are all fleshed out so well, again a real great mix of goofy/serious.

I'm another Stephen King fan certainly. Some older works are definitely products of the time, but the guy is an incredible storyteller who can do a lot more than people often give him credit for.

I'll also throw in Frank Schatzing, John Fowles, Philip Pullman and J.C. McCrae.

I'll come back later to throw in some weebier examples too.
