if you use a gameshark does that mess up your pokemon game? what are the disadvantages and advantages? is this looked down upon by other games?

Screw the Gameshark. That thing is so problematic. And the company that owns it can't even made decent codes for it anymore. Go with the AR. Much more reliable, no?

The advantages include getting pretty much everything you need. The only disadvantage is that it'll shorten the game by removing all challenges. Another disadvantage is messing up your game, but only truly unintelligent people can manage that. If you're not unintelligent, go ahead. No risks.

haha thanks, so is there a particular AR i should be looking at?

AR Duo MAX is the most recent one, but I prefer my good old ARv3.3. It has less restrictions on codes that use patch slots. You probably won't have an easy time finding an ARv3.3 since it's outdated.

The AR Duo MAX can only have one code using up one or two patch slots at a time. You don't need to worry about that. Most of the codes that use the patch slots can only be used one at a time anyway.

ROM Patch Slot codes as described by Labmaster in his guide on GameFAQs...

ROM patch codes are a special type of code which intercepts reads to
the cartridge's data. There are several limitations in using these
    codes.

Action Replays have four 'ROM Patch Slots' - numbered 1 through to 4.
Only 1 code can be used in each slot at a time. All ROM Patch codes
in this guide are labelled with what slot they occupy.

YOU CANNOT USE TWO CODES THAT SHARE THE SAME ROM PATCH SLOT.

Many codes in this guide have been encrypted for more than one ROM
Patch Slot - you only need to use one of these codes.

For example, the Wild Pok?mon Species Modifiers use two ROM Patch
slots - slots 1 and 2. If you want to use the Level Modifiers at
the same time, you cannot use the Slot 1 code, you -must- use the
    Slot 3 code.

For VisualBoyAdvance users, there are no restrictions to the amount
of ROM Patch codes that you can have active at one time.

    ==Action Replay DUO Users==

According to the information I have, Action Replay DUOs are only
capable of having one ROM Patch code (note - 1 code is 2 lines)
active at any time. Therefore, the Shiny modifier and any other ROM
patch codes that take up more than one slot cannot be used.

Not true, I used the gameshark once so that I can get Infinite Rare Candies.
It worked like a charm. I must have more than 100 trainers that I haven't fought yet becuse all my Pokemon were on Lv.100.

And exactly what does the Inf. Rare Candies code have to do with the patch slots?

The first thing to do before using the codes is to check if it needs an update. That should've come with a CD-ROM. Install the software from the CD. Then open up the AR program you just installed.

Get the USB cable that also should've come with the AR. Take any game and put it into the AR device and then the AR device into the GBA. Turn it on and wait until it fully loads up the AR. Once the AR main menu is loaded, connect the USB cable to the AR device and a working USB slot on your computer. Make sure the batteries are in the green.

To make sure the USB connection is working, go back to the AR program on your PC. Click the "AR GBX" button near the lower-left corner. If it starts reading the codes off your AR, then the connection is working. If you get an error, then that SUB slot isn't working properly. If that's the case, find a different USB slot.

Once you've got the USB thing going, make sure you're connected to the internet. Click the 'Update" button in the upper-right corner. If it starts downloading something, go play your PS2 or GCN or watch TV until it's done. If it doesn't download anything, then disconnect the USB cable from the AR device.

Go back to your GBA/SP, go to "Options". Look in the upper-right corner of the screen. It should say v3.3 or something above that. If it does, it's all good.

For the codes, either go to Codejunkies, GSCentral, or GameFAQs.

And for those two requests you just made...what version of Pokemon are you playing?

cool, well, my AR didn't come with a usb or a cd, and i'm playing fire red
