I'm sure this is a topic that's come up many many times before, so I apologize in advance if I'm repeating something recently talked about.
I'm 18… I've been a fan since red/bue, and I find that red/blue and gold/silver were the glory days of pokemon. Now, I'm not the type to shun new games for any reason, and claim that the classics are untouchable, but the series is going downhill. At the very least, I think the execs over in PokeCorp are neglecting the older generation of players. Just look at the tv show to see how kiddie oriented it is. Of course, nothing's wrong with playing a "kids game", or else I wouldn't be here. What I'm thinking is, there's no need to continually add blaringly obvious hooks and… an abundance of gimmicks. There's a reason red and blue sold so many copies. It's because people appreciate simplicity… but… tell me if I'm wrong on that. Because:
I'd done a little research on what people are suggesting for the next generation of pokemon games… I found this: http: //blogs.ign.com/startselect/2008/01/06/76205/
For those of you who don't feel like copy and pasting that into your address bar…
1. Introduce a new control scheme
2. Full character customization
3. Revamp the story
4. New interactive battles
5. Push online!
6. 3D graphics
7. Sounds
8. Creating some better pokemon
9. Battle field tactics
So yeah… everyone who commented on that blog agreed. So if that's the predominant feeling among players then… whatever, I'll go out and buy the next game regardless cause I'm a dork like that, but the point is… I disagree with basically every point on there.
We don't need MORE better pokemon. There are plenty awesome pokemon spread throughout the generations. Too bad they're never in contact with eachother, because inexplicably, Rattata are just completely unable to live in Sinnoh. =P
My point is this, I think. Adding in all those 9 things would do nothing except maybe extend our interests in the game by a number of hours after buying it. In the end though, we'll put it down and be mildly disappointed again, and gripe about the decline in the series for another handful of years. What Pokemon needs to do to avoid going the way of Megaman… (obscurity due to too many crappy games in a row)… isn't continually update ideas with superficially interesting gimmicks. They need to make a classic. They need another classic on the level of red/blue and gold/silver… something that is simple and continuing with the tradition of that golden age. The powers of the Wii and DS should be used to create something really compelling… not just flashy graphics.
I'm not going to take the time to brainstorm until I hear at least some positive feedback.
Negative is fine though… I just want to know what the general opinion is about the direction they're heading… and should be heading.
