Hack of the Month discussion

I'm assuming you're alluding to LIFE? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "completely bogus" screenshot was just a colour corrected gif?
No, it was the title screen possessing some 1,800 colours, which is physically impossible on the GBA.

Ultimately there isn't going to be a perfect system for Hacks of the Month. But I do believe that HOTY entries must have some form of a playable beta that shows enough of the game for the community to make a fair judgement (I haven't read HOTY entry requirements so this may already be the case)

It is indeed the case!

No, it was the title screen possessing some 38,000 colours (number may not be totally accurate, but it was WAY more than the maximum 512), which is physically impossible on the GBA.

This was the bogus screenshot, correct? https://i.imgur.com/xS6n7Qs.gif

While yes it is an oversight to have let it remain, I somehow doubt every single one of the seventy-two voters who voted for LIFE did so because they saw that one gif (especially because it wasn't even one of the screenshots selected to represent the hack).

It also was not a codified rule at the time, so I feel it would be unfair to revoke LIFE's award now, either.

I will amend the rules to make it more abundantly clear, though.

Thank you, and for reference it was this I was referring to:

[PokeCommunity.com] Hack of the Month discussion

Anyway, I really would like to see Hack of the Quarter be a thing here. I for one would take it a good bit more seriously than HotM. Unless I'm mistaken, don't Hack of the Year participants have to win a HotM, or no? Would you impose a similar barrier for HotQ? What do you think of a winning tier sort of system, where to participate in the next level up you have to win one from before?

I'm not completely shooting the idea down, of course, because the landscape of the hacking scene and its activity in general ebbs and flows, so of course we should adapt to it, but for now, like I said earlier, there's a good host of great hacks that deserve to win Hack of the Month and I don't feel it's reached a point of obsolescence at all, yet.

Hack of the Year and Hack of the Month are completely separate, and I'd rather it stay that way: for example, what if an amazing hack were released now? It would be eligible for Hack of the Year even if it hadn't been on the forums to win a Hack of the Month, and preventing it from winning would be unnecessarily restrictive I feel.

I too would prefer a Hack of the Quarter than a HoTM, like the Unofficial Hack of the week thing that used to go on, HoTM doesn't seem to hold much weight. I think it's rather easy to get HoTM, and most hacks which don't have it, frankly don't deserve it (or will get them in a couple of coming months). Therefore you create a competition, as time goes by, with lower and lower quality hacks.

Also, HoTM never feels like a significant enough goal. You'll never see someone say, "I'm gonna work hard this month to win that HoTM!". The one month sticky and small word of congrats isn't really much. It's basically like a pat on the back. That said, there probably isn't at all anything you can do to boost it's reward (maybe if you had that banner which linked to "Dr.Spheals says read this, Getting started, I mean Spheal" include a link to the HoTM thread too, that would be pretty cool.)

On the topic of the quality of hacks winning competitions, I think that hacks without releases don't need to be filtered out of eligibility. Instead maybe you can ask the nominees to allow the moderators to play through their game in private (from there you can cancel the nomination in the case of faked content, or faked progress). It's easy to take a screen shot of 2 maps in different parts of it and disguise it as 10 maps. I realise most people may not be comfortable letting you play their hack before it is ready, in this case they can opt out for the month/quarter, in my opinion.

Well, whatever the decision, I think that the HoTM should be used as a means to nominate contestants for HoTQ. Every month pick 3 hacks, whoever wins has a slot into the HoTQ contest. Sure there'll be 4 contestants per HoTQ this way, but what's wrong with that? Maybe even a 5th spot for like a wild card hack which got nominated prior but didn't make eliminations or something similar.

oh boy another discussion *wades in*

Let's start with some facts here:

Now on to hacks without releases:
Spoiler:

Other notable none-releases:
Spoiler:

All nice looking and sounding hacks, yet have no releases, and to be honest, most, if not all the hacks that looked good without releases turned out to be good when released

Honestly though, I kinda like the way hotm is now, really it's just a little bit of fun, to showcase a few hacks here and there, and after all, the more people see hacks, the more likely they'll want to make hacks of there own, meaning more great hacks, even the best hackers now must have had some reason to hack.

I myself (even though i'm not even close to being one of the best lol) only started hacking because I saw other people's hacks, and thought "hey, that's cool, I wonder if I could do something like that".

I don't think a hacks credibility should be solely based on whether they have a release or not, it's like judging a baby on how much it's contributed to life.

Of course they may not have a release by choice, such as they're not happy with it's current state, or they're trying to smooth the edges, and they may be playable and be better than some which have releases.

Making hotm less frequent would make it harder to pick the 3 best hacks, plus it could mean that really good hacks may miss out and go less noticed, which is bad.

So in conclusion, it's not 100% perfect, but it still kinda works, just needs a bit of smoothing

I like that idea, and the wildcard would spice things up

plz don't tell me off for voicing opinion :3 *wades out*

I'd tap dat
Love this idea, brings more meaning to it. But I also agree with Hiroshi, so wathever

I'm just filling with words so I can post this
Spoiler:

It was an entertaining debate/argument/battle beween Spherical and Nick. I'm gonna declare Spherical the winner. Nick started out pretty strong but over time, Spherical's points just made more sense.

Yup.

I only like a real award to the winner of the hack of month, in my opinion, only put in sticky the thread isn't enough, maybe a little signature design as award? (Yup, an image smaller than 200x200).
