Been in a bit of nostalgic mood as of late and iam considering building up a card collection as another hobby. So thought i join here to get some advice where to start in terms of buying cards.

Think i want to collect the older card's, base set and rocket mainly. As those are the one's i grew up with and really liked the most. But also some of the latest one's to, as those new EX cards are rather awesome.

Thanks for reading and look forward to participating in this forum.

For collecting your base set, I would start with base, jungle and fossil. Those are the 3 first sets, and will be worth the most over time. Make sure your cards are in very nice condition! Buying old collections is really hot right now; people who collected as kids are selling their cards because they're all broke college kids now. Also, card shops often sell singles of the old sets. Another tip is asking people if you can have their cards. I do it all the time :'D

The newest set out is Next Destinies. This set is where all of the big money cards are; Mewtwo EX being the most notorious. The problem with these newer sets is that 9 times out of 10, as soon as the cards go out of play, they aren't worth anything. I do have hope for Mewtwo ex, though! He may retain his value because he's mewtwo ex, hehe.

If you'd like, ask me any questions you may have.

The values may drop like a rock after it's no longer play legal, but only on the stuff that was any good in tournaments to begin with, and not to levels where they're worthless, unless they were an uncommon or common, but the values of the uncommons commons generally aren't that high to begin with (unless they're a card as in demand as Pokemon Catcher, which I've seen fetching as high as $14 because people really want them for their decks). The secret rares that are solely for collection purposes mostly stay flat in value, while most of the commons and uncommons are worthless unless you have their entire set.

The earliest sets are among the most valuable sets (especially for individual cards), but there are some other sets that are valuable because they're hard to come by, particularly sets released between 2002 and 2005, as there was an overall lull in collecting the cards so there are fewer cards from many of these sets.

    Thanks guy's :)

So i take it if i want booster pack's i should check ebay?

From Next Destinies? You could find some at drug stores, walmarts, or targets, but I personally like supporting my local card shop :D You always run the risk of fake packs on ebay. :<
